Can You Charge an Electric Bike at a Tesla Charging Station?

There is no doubt that electric vehicles are very comfortable, stylish, and easy to use. If you are planning on buying an electric vehicle, you must be aware of the fact that electric vehicles have batteries that need charging.

No matter how well electric vehicles are, they need to be charged. What if you are away from home, traveling, and your batteries die and you don’t have any backup batteries?

A charging station will save you in such situations. The question must be arising in your mind such as:

Level 3 charging stations are the fastest station among all 3 charging stations. You can’t install it at home as it uses a much higher voltage. It uses 400 to 900 volts. Tesla Level 3 stations are also known as “superchargers.” It allows your battery to charge 3 to 20 miles of range per minute.

Many e-bikes are classified as bicycles rather than mopeds or motorcycles, depending on local regulations.

This exempts them from the tighter laws governing the certification and operation of more powerful two-wheelers known as electric motorcycles. E-bikes may be regarded as a distinct category with their regulations. E-bikes are battery-powered variations on motorized bicycles, available since the late 1800s.

E-motorbikes, on the other hand, are electric-powered variants of traditional motorcycles. This necessitates distinct regulation and legislation for them. E-bikes use rechargeable batteries in addition to electric motors and some form of control.

Sealed lead-acid (SLA), nickel-cadmium (NiCad), nickel-metal hydride (NiMH), and lithium-ion polymer batteries are all in use (Li-ion). The voltage, total charge capacity (amp hours), weight, number of charging cycles before performance diminishes, and ability to endure over-voltage demanding circumstances all affect battery performance.

Elon Musk responded to concerns about his firm and his vision for America back in 2018. He changed the subject to scooters and bicycles, and an electric bike was just an idea at the time. Elon first stated that scooters were not on his radar, and then he indicated the potential of an electric bicycle. The Model B sports a sleek frame design with proximity LiDAR sensors that scan the area and form a protective bubble around the rider, alerting them to any possible threats.

Furthermore, each wheel has its dedicated motor, resulting in the Model B’s dual-drive system. The wheel spokes have been replaced with shock absorbers, ensuring a smooth ride.

The Model B’s frame also has foldout footrests and handlebars that detect force rather than spin separately, allowing the rider to turn by simply applying more pressure to one side of the bike. At the same time, the front wheel travels independently based on applied force.

The bike also has its autopilot feature, which allows the built-in AI system to control and drive the bike safely using multiple sensors on its frame. A sleek integrated dashboard fits flush within the bike’s frame. It shows route metrics and navigation maps for the rider to examine.

The Model B e-bike is presently a concept with no pricing or availability information. On the other hand, Elon Musk’s supporters and proponents of clean micro-mobility are undoubtedly eager for its production.

Although e-bikes are zero-emission vehicles since they emit no combustion byproducts, the environmental consequences of energy generation and delivery and battery manufacturing and recycling must be addressed.

Despite these disadvantages, e-bikes have a lower environmental impact than automobiles. They are often seen as more environmentally benign in urban settings. According to a recent English study, e-bikes have the potential to lower vehicle carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in England by up to 50% (approximately 30 million tonnes per year) if used to replace automobile travel.

So, Model B seems ideal, right?

It is, however, physically impossible to carry out. When you press down on the handlebars, sensors detect the force and tell the fork (still coupled to an articulating column) to turn in the desired direction.

What is the range of an e-bike battery?

The range of a battery pack depends on the amount of energy packed inside of it and is measured in Watt-Hours (Wh). Watt?

Watt-hours are calculated by multiplying the battery capacity, in Amp-hours, by the battery Voltage, in Volts.

Let’s assume that, on average, 1-mile requires about 25Wh of energy. So a 14Ah, 36V battery should get you about 25-miles per charge.

Keep in mind that the weight of the rider, outside temperature conditions, and the amount of pedaling will make a significant difference in range.

A word of caution: the range that e-bike manufacturers provide should be taken with a grain of salt. That number is generated from tests that are run in perfectly tailored lab conditions. Do you charge any of your electronics in an incubation chamber set at 28° C with a lab-grade charger that applies the perfect current while charging? Yeah, I don’t either. And so, We should assume that the manufacture-specified range is delivered only if the battery is charged and discharged under ideal conditions i.e. not real world conditions.

For a more realistic estimate, shave off 15% of the manufacturer specified range and assume this padded number to be your real range.

If you’re looking for a longer range, choose a battery that has higher capacity (Ah). If you’re looking for more power, choose a battery that has higher voltage (V). Learn more why voltage and capacity matter.

What is the lifespan of an e-bike battery?

There are several factors that affect the lifetime of a battery such as:

  • environmental conditions: temperature during charging discharging
  • charging rate: how fast or slow your battery is charged
  • charging voltage: what voltage the battery is charged to
  • depth of discharge (DoD): what voltage the battery is discharged to

The list above isn’t exhaustive but, in general, batteries decay as a function of time in the charged state. Period.

Day 1: You get your new e-bike and charge it up to 100% and go on a bike ride. When you come home, you charge the bike back up to 100% and you’re excited to ride it again soon.

Day 2. 364: Life get’s in the way and you still haven’t been out on your bike since that first ride.

Day 365: One year later, it’s the perfect day for a bike ride and you finally have some time on your hands. You head to your basement, unlock your bike, and excitedly turn it on. 80% charge. What? You clearly remember charging your bike to 100% last year before moving it to the basement!

The truth is, we can’t beat thermodynamics. I’ll say it again: batteries decay as a function of time in the charged state.

Now, because you left your battery at 100% for a whole year in a basement with no temperature control, you inadvertently caused your battery to lose a certain amount of irreversible capacity. Your range will be ~20% lower and you’ll likely have to replace your battery sooner than you expected. The table below shows you how much recoverable capacity exists in a battery after storing it at different temperatures and different charge states for 1-year.

This is why a lot of electronics come with batteries that are only partially charged. to help slow down this decay. That being said, it’s hard to track how long e-bikes and their batteries have been sitting in warehouses before being delivered to your door so you could get a battery that has been decaying for a year or two.

Manufacturers also tend to overrate their batteries and will make claims about certain batteries having a lifetime of at least 1,000 cycles. Show.me.the.data.

The lifetime of a lithium-ion battery is described as the number of cycles until the capacity (Ah) drops below 80% of it’s initial capacity. In general, this is roughly 250-400 cycles (depending on battery chemistry and other factors) which amounts to roughly 1.5 to 2 years if you charge discharge daily and care for your battery properly.

How to charge your e-bike battery to make it last longer

  • The thing that will kill your battery faster than anything else is leaving it charged at elevated temperatures. If it’s 80 degrees outside and you have your e-bike fully charged, move it indoors where it’s cooler and try to drain the battery as soon as possible.
  • Charge your battery at room temperature as often as possible.
  • When sourcing an e-bike battery charger, the slower the charge rate the better. For example, if you have a 2-Amp charger, and your battery is a 14 Ah battery pack, you are charging at 14 Ah / 2-Amps = 7-hours. This is a nice, slow charge which will certainly improve the longevity of your battery pack. Avoid charging at rates that are faster than 2-hours for a full charge.

There’s a lot that goes into choosing the best battery for you e-bike, and there certainly isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. But if I were buying an e-bike battery today, here’s what I’d do: LFP or NMC, slow charge, avoid storing or charging in hotter temperatures, and leave the battery at around 30% charge if you don’t plan on using it for a while.

Harley-Davidson and the electric future

In the U.S., smaller motorcycles suitable for urban transportation and only occasional highway use are not as popular as in Asia and Europe. Nelson said U.S. buyers tend to be older and favor larger bikes with traditional looks and the signature sounds of a combustion engine.

Harley-Davidson, the largest and oldest U.S. motorcycle manufacturer, has addressed these buyers with its LiveWire, an electric motorcycle with traditional cruiser styling and an impressive 105 horsepower that lets it accelerate to 60 miles per hour in a quick 3.1 seconds. The LiveWire is 7-feet long and nearly 550 pounds, giving it the size and weight to fit in with the company’s mainstream gas-powered offerings, but, at 30,000, it’s just too expensive for many potential customers.

With the traditional American motorcycle buyer aging, Harley sales are down almost 40% since their peak in 2006. Demographics will be a problem for them, Nelson said.

Harley is committed to electric under a relatively new management team, led by CEO Jochen Zeitz, who earned high marks for his FOCUS on sustainability as CEO of Puma. We believe electric needs to play an important role in the future of Harley-Davidson, he recently told Wall Street analysts. He said sales volumes are low relative to traditional bikes, but added, It must be an important segment in the long term future of the company and it’s also attracting new riders, new customers to the brand that might not have considered Harley-Davidson before.

Craig Kennison, who covers Harley for RW Baird, said the priority for Zeitz and his team is to shore up Harley’s finances and FOCUS its business on the key markets where it can generate the most profits from core consumers today, and it will continue to generate the vast majority of its business from its V-twin internal combustion engine cycles (sales for LiveWire are not disclosed but the assumption is they remain very minor). It’s not a big number, Kennison said.

Similar to the path chosen by Tesla to first FOCUS on the luxury consumer, Harley needs to perfect the electric motorcycle technology and given the price points today — it cannot alone control the cost curve in key areas like battery technology — only over time will it become more affordable to a larger consumer market. But if Harley makes the right decisions on current profitability centers, it will support the investment in electric vehicles over the decades to come, he said. Right now Harley has a huge market and needs to make as much money as they can, and servicing the core customer, which is still highly profitable, is the FOCUS.

Harley is headed into the pedal bicycle market as well. It recently announced that it will spin off its electric bicycle effort, which has been in research and development for a few years, retaining a minority stake in the new firm, Serial 1 Company, a reference to its first-ever machine.

Targeting the e-bicycle market, with pricing below 5,000, is a Smart move by Harley’s new management, as it makes the brand affordable for the masses in a growing segment, said Brandon Rolle, Northcoast Research analyst. And similar to NIU’s target scooter market, riders may not need a driver’s license to operate these vehicles, which will help in Harley-Davidson’s appeal to urban commuters and casual recreational cyclists.

High-end bicycle makers like Specialized have an early lead in this market — e-bikes which generate power that is multiplied by the human pedaling activity — and it does have the potential for widespread appeal in the future, according to Kennison. It lets ‘the everyman’ get on the road … especially during the pandemic people want to get outside and bicycling is a great way to do it, but depending on your fitness level, having the added electrical power creates a totally different experience. You can go 20 to 50 miles and it changes the appeal he said.

Harley’s motorcycle competitors

In the near future, pent up demand for outdoor products caused by Covid-19 could benefit motorcycle makers, including Harley, which has had a rough last five years according to Wedbush Securities analyst James Hardiman. A lot of investors have looked at Harley-Davidson and the broader motorcycle one as not benefitting, from the new outdoors boom, the analyst said. But industry sales and used sales are both up, and those are precursors for a broader-based recovery in bike sales, Hardiman recently told CNBC. While the bear case about the aging demographics isn’t going away, it has been that way for a decade already, he said.

Among Harley’s competitors for the future full-size motorcycle buyer are not just traditional players like Honda and Yamaha, but Zero and Energetica, which have some of the most advanced electric bike technology currently available, Siahaan said.

Zero, founded in Santa Cruz, California, in 2006, isn’t a household name, but it’s one of the most established players in the field. It began selling electric motorcycles in 2009, making it one of the very first production two-wheelers (the earliest production electric motorcycles and scooters appeared in the 1970s and 1990s, respectively, but enjoyed limited success).

Zero’s current all-electric line-up includes everything from the FX, a small on- and off-road capable dual-sport motorcycle starting at 9,300, all the way up to the SR/S sportbike which starts at 20,000. The 110-horsepower SR/S can reach 124 miles per hour and is capable of more than 200 miles of range when equipped with an enhanced battery. The FR/S is so advanced Road and Track alluded to Zero getting close to the being the Tesla of two wheels in its review. Zero offers it with an app that lets users modify the bikes maximum speed, power, torque and regenerative braking parameters.

A Zero FX electric motorcycle just after purchase in June 2019 at a Chicago, Illinois, store. Built in California, Zero motorcycles have been the best-selling electric motorcycle brand on the market. Harley-Davidson’s CEO claims that since it introduced the LiveWire, its brand has selling well, but the Zero FX and a newer cheaper model, Zero FX/S, are as low as one-third the price of a LiveWire.

Zero reached a 10-year deal with Polaris, a recreational vehicle powerhouse, that should give it the resources to further expand manufacturing and distribution. It will bring Zero’s powertrain technology and software to Polaris’ lineup of snowmobiles and off-road vehicles.

The high-end brand Energica was formed in 2010 as a subsidiary of CRP Group, a motorsport and aviation manufacturer based in Modena, Italy. It offers a small lineup of attractively styled bikes starting at 17,600 for the general-purpose Eva EsseEsse9, and ending with the top-of-the-line Ego. The latter is a 145-horsepower sportbike with an eye-watering starting price of nearly 24,000, but a 150 mph top speed and up to 250 miles of range.

Saha of the Global Marketing Institute told CNBC that the company is investing highly in RD and owns several patents related to electric vehicle manufacturing in Europe, Asia, and North America.

Of course, as the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, Honda Motorcycles of Japan, is not standing still. It recently filed patents for electric-powered versions of its CB125R and CB300R, these are small, easy to manage general purpose bikes with café racer styling.

Saha notes that Honda is also making large investments in the development of swappable battery technology for electric motorcycles to allow riders to quickly replace the batteries after use. These moves, and factors like its global dealer and distribution network will aid Honda, Saha said.

Tesla moving beyond cars

And then there is Tesla. Though Musk has said the company will not produce a road bike, he has announced plans to release an electric all-terrain vehicle, the Cyberquad, late in 2021, and has at least teased the possibility of one day making a two-wheeled electric bike. In the least, Tesla could easily pivot a portion of its battery business to supplying other manufacturers, says Nelson.

Generating revenue is a big concern for any start-up, but especially in the electric motorcycle space, where federal and state-level regulation abound and consumer expectations are high. Many of the companies that first entered the electric two-wheeler market place have failed or been absorbed by larger players. This includes Brammo, which launched in 2002 and sold bikes with six-speed transmissions like those in traditional gas bikes rather than the single-speed automatics most electric manufacturers use. It was first purchased by the recreational vehicle maker Polaris in 2015, then engine maker Cummins in 2017. Brammo-branded bikes are no longer sold, but its technology lives on with its purchasers.

A similar fate befell Alta Motors, a maker of technologically advanced off-road electric bikes. The company shuttered operations in 2018 and its assets were taken over by Bombardier’s Recreational Products business in 2019 for use across its product lineup, which includes Ski Doo snowmobiles and the Can-Am line of three-wheel motorcycles.

It’s always difficult to predict the future, Siahaan said. A lot of companies come out with big, bold announcements, but never even come to market.

It’s very early, so it is difficult to see how it all plays out, but that’s typical of a true growth market, added Kennison.

The specs of Tesla Ebike Motor

Mid-drive motors and hub-drive motors are the two types of motors used in ebikes. Mid-drive Motors are being used in ebikes for more than five years now. There hasn’t been much change in the mid-drive Motor’s design since. Hub-drive Motors provide you with throttle assistance, it gives you the feel of riding the moped while you are still pedaling your ebike. Whenever you require assistance you just need to turn the throttle and there you go.

Since Tesla is known for its technical abilities and innovative designs, we can expect that the Tesla ebike will have Motors that will combine the pro features of both mid-drive and hub drive Motors, on top of that, we can expect both front and back Wheels of Tesla ebike will be equipped with Motors.

Tesla’s chief designer Franz von Holzhausen is working day and night to make the dream of a Tesla ebike come true. They are working on every design aspect and the designs are changing sometimes in a fraction and sometimes completely.

Traffic Sensors

The Tesla ebike will come loaded with traffic sensors just like Tesla cars and it will not only detect the traffic from front and back but also detect the traffic coming from sides, this way you can be safe from getting bumped by a car driver who is too much distracted to notice an ebike on the road.

It may be a difficult task for another ebike manufacturer but not for Tesla. Tesla already has manufacturing facilities and skilled laborers. So, they can make ebike on U.S. soil without affecting too much of the cost of ebikes.

The battery of Tesla Ebike

Just like ebike Motors, there hasn’t been any major change in the technology of ebike battery cells. The ebike manufacturers are still using the same old 18650 lithium-ion battery cells which are not changed much from at least a decade.

18650 Lithium-ion cells are sufficiently performing well to achieve roughly 30 miles (48 kilometers) range for ebikes but they are heavy and you have to replace them every 2 to 3 years because, after 2 to 3 years, they are unable to provide any charge due to increasing losses after every charge and discharge cycle.

Tesla is going to introduce a new kind of battery cell which will be lighter than 18650 Lithium-ion cells and they are going to last for at least a decade.

Other miscellaneous specs of Tesla ebike

Tesla is already holding technical expertise in manufacturing electric vehicles and that is why they are going to bring revolutionary changes in the ebike manufacturing process. Regenerative braking and theft protection are a must among the specs of Tesla ebike.
