RIDE FASTER!

Whether speed is one of the most important factors to you or not, understanding the speed capability of different electric bike models will help you choose your ideal e-bike. Everyone is different and has different plans for how they will use their new electric bike.

Juiced Bikes are well known for delivering the widest selection of high-speed electric bikes, and have the power capabilities to match the needs of just about any rider. Whether you’re looking for a more eco-friendly way to commute, or just love the rush of the wind on your face as you seek out new adventures, our high-speed e-bike options will provide you with a thrilling ride and extremely functional riding alternative!

What Speed Do Electric Bikes Go?

Here is a quick overview of the top speeds each Juiced e-bike is capable of achieving:

E-Bike Classifications:

One of the most common questions we get from customers is related to speed regulations in their city and state. Many states in the United States utilize a three class system for e-bike regulations, but it’s important to always check your most current local e-bike laws (they are rapidly changing from state to state). Here is some helpful information on e-bike speed classifications:

All Juiced e-bikes are eligible as either Class 2 or Class 3 and some of our e-bike models also feature a race track mode that riders can enable on private property that removes the 28mph limit and allows riders to get electric assist regardless of how fast they are pedaling.

Class 2: Throttle only top speed 20 mph

All of our e-bikes have a throttle. This is either a twist throttle or a thumb throttle located on the handlebars. When the throttle is used, the e-bike can be propelled without the rider pedaling. similar to a motorcycle. In the USA the regulations state that the maximum speed allowed in this kind of operation is 20mph although the e-bike may be technically capable of going faster than 20mph. When you’re riding a bike, 20mph is an ideal speed. These aren’t our fastest electric bikes, but a top speed of 20mph is the fastest class 2 e-bikes can go. Even though they aren’t the fastest, they still give you that rush of wind and get you where you want to go quickly.

Electric bikes with lower top speeds are great for leisure and exploring. Go out on the weekends to do a few errands close by, or take your bike down some paths that you’ve never visited. You don’t need super high speeds to have a great time. With the throttle under your grip, you can adjust your speed as you go along. You can choose to use this type of model at its top speed, or ride at a slower pace. You can even test the bike to see if you can push it a little bit past the 20mph speed — just be safe if you choose to try it.

All Juiced e-bikes arrive set to Class 2 however the user can manually configure other assist settings to increase the speed of the e-bike.

Class 3: Pedal Assist top speed 28 mph

Class 3 e-bikes allow the bike to assist riders up to a speed of 28 mph when the rider is turning the pedals. When the e-bike reaches 28 mph, the motor assistance will be reduced until a speed of 28 mph or lower is maintained. Class 3 is a much more enjoyable way to experience the fastest e-bikes as it is closer to the speed a fit cyclist can achieve without motor assistance.

Note: When throttle is used and the rider stops pedaling, the speed of the e-bike will gradually be reduced to the throttle only speed of 20 mph. If pedaling is resumed, the e-bike will again accelerate until 28 mph is reached.

With the higher top speed allowed by class 3 e-bikes, you have an even greater range of speed than a class 2 electric bike. If you want to ride more leisurely, you can absolutely do that. But, if you really want to get cruising, you can move a lot faster than other models. speed is great when you’re on a deadline or have a tight timeframe to finish your ride. Many of our eco-minded riders love our bikes because they’re much more friendly to the environment. Even while you’re doing your part to help the planet, you still need to get places on time. Whether you’re heading to work, an appointment or any other destination with a specific arrival time, these bikes may be the better option.

With the ability to juice up your bike using the throttle or the pedal assist. you can feel the power of these bikes at multiple points. Whether you want top speed or a little bit less, you can choose whether you want to use the throttle or pedal assist functions of your electric bike.

Race Track Mode: The Fastest Electric Bike Setting

When operating the e-bike on private property or a closed circuit race track, Race Track Mode can be selected from the LCD display. This assist mode works similar to the Class 3 operation, however, the 28 mph speed limit is removed and the system’s power levels are increased to the highest levels possible allowing the bike to reach its true top speeds.

In Race Track mode, the maximum speed may be faster than 28 mph depending on many factors such as rider strength, tire pressure, wind, and ambient temperature. The final top speed depends only on the power available to the motor the rider’s pedaling efforts. In this mode, the system’s power will be increased significantly. As the electronics are working under load, the system’s temperatures will increase, however, onboard sensors will automatically reduce the power if necessary to maintain the reliability of the electronics.

When you know you have access to safe terrain and want to see exactly what your bike is capable of, use race track mode. In this mode, every model of our bikes can go even faster. Our series of high-speed e-bikes, including the HyperScorpion and HyperScrambler 2, have speeds of 30mph — the fastest electric bikes in our lineup.

E-bikes 101

The moment a first-time e-bike rider climbs on a fully charged bike, there’s this jolt of wonder that runs through their mind: Just what happens if I push the throttle all the way? How fast can I get this baby to go?

Our advice: If you’re in a safe place to do it, go right ahead. Put on your helmet and let it rip.

The motors on most of Schwinn’s e-bikes are designed to hit top speeds of 20 miles an hour without any pedal assistance from the rider. That’s because they’re classified as Class 2 e-bikes, which are limited to a top speed of 20 miles an hour. If you can pedal faster than that, by all means, go ahead, but the motor on a Class 2 e-bike is going to get you to 20 mph.

How Fast Are We Talking?

Just for comparison’s sake, the top riders in the Tour de France average an overall speed of 25 mph through more than 2,000 miles of grueling hill climbs, breathtaking downhill descents, time trials, and flat racing. That’s without any electrical assist. So even if you hopped on something like our Coston DX, kept it fully charged, and used the throttle the whole time to race against the elite Tour athletes, you’ll still be well off the pack. And disqualified since e-bikes aren’t allowed in the Tour de France.

But for getting around town, going on a social ride with friends, or running errands, a Class 2 e-bike and its 20 mph limit will be everything you need.

It’s important to remember that not all e-bikes are created equal. Some e-bikes are classified as Class 1 bikes where the electric motor only provides assistance to the rider when they pedal. The pedal assist will work up to 20 mph. Everything after that comes from the power in the rider’s legs.

These bikes are allowed wherever bikes are permitted.

Class 2 e-bikes (the majority of e-bikes on the market today) have a throttle that can propel the bike to that top 20 mph speed without any pedal assist from the rider. The bike can accelerate to 20 mph without the rider having to pedal. And like Class 1, these bikes are allowed wherever bikes are permitted.

We should add that not all Class 2 e-bikes will get you all the way to 20 mph. Take, for instance, our smaller Healy Ridge mountain bike. Designed for younger riders and with safety incorporated as a top concern, it purposefully has a top speed of 16 mph.

But for the most part, 20 mph is the top speed on a Class 2 e-bike. And why is 20 mph the industry standard for Class 2 e-bikes? Because that’s where the federal government put it a number of years ago.

Class 3 e-bikes are also known as speed pedal-assisted electric bikes, where the motor provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, ceases to assist when the bike hits a speed of 28 mph, and is equipped with a speedometer.

Because of their higher power and capability to hit higher speeds, Class 3 e-bikes are often restricted from trails and bike paths.

As the e-bike industry grows and technological advances continue, it seems likely that additional e-bike classes will be created. For now, however, Class 3 e-bikes hit the highest regulated speed.

Beyond the Classes

You might see the occasional e-bike (and we use the term loosely here) blowing through city traffic at speeds of 30 or 40 mph or more. These are essentially small electric motorcycles with pedals merely as decoration. They’re not really e-bikes, and they might not be legal in most places.

You might also find some high-power e-bikes that allow for a manual override of the regulator. These e-bikes can reportedly reach top speeds of 60 mph. Again, they’re not legal in most public places.

Speed and Range

Fully charged, a 250-watt e-bike motor can take a rider about 22.5 miles at 20 mph. At lower speeds, a battery will last up to 45 miles. These numbers, of course, can vary depending on riding conditions, bike weight, and rider weight. While we offer higher-capacity batteries for our e-bikes, the larger batteries won’t make the bike go faster. They extend range, not speed. Only the rider can do that!

So, there you have it. Again, most e-bikes out there are Class 2 and only assist up to 20 mph. Just make sure to check the specifications of the e-bike you want to ride and the regulations in your area. Once you have that, you’re ready for all the e-bike adventures you please. Just don’t forget your helmet.
