Best Folding Electric Bikes of 2023: Elevate Your Urban Commutes
E-bikes of all types have had a huge growth in popularity and improvement in technology in the past few years. Folding bikes, including folding electric bikes, have also seen a jump in use.
This is because they are a convenient mode of transport for commuters or cyclists who need to transport and store their bicycles more easily.
With folding electric bicycles, you have the power to take on longer commutes without breaking a sweat, reliably bring your bike on any public transit, and fold it up easily to store it at the office or in your home.
The best folding electric bike will fold quickly and securely, be relatively lightweight, be comfortable to ride, and come fully equipped for urban commuting. With that said, let’s take a look at some of the differences we see between models.
Quick Folding Electric Bikes Buying Guide
Tire width: Fat vs Standard
Folding fat bikes and regular folding e-Bikes are both popular choices with their own distinct advantages. The reason that fat-tire folding e-Bikes are so popular is that these bikes are the most versatile and comfortable.
A folding fat-tire electric bike has the ability to go on or off-road, maintains excellent traction and control in all terrains and weather conditions, and is super-comfy because the large tires absorb almost all of the road vibrations.
Non-electric folding bike vs a conventional folding bike
Whether you choose electric or not depends on your needs and capabilities as a cyclist.
A motor and battery will allow you to commute without effort, especially if there’s a throttle. This is an excellent choice for long or difficult commutes. E-bikes also allow you to easily transport cargo such as a loaded pannier rack without noticing the extra weight.
Folding electric bikes for adults are great for those with injuries or who find it difficult to ride regularly and want to be able to without limitations.
Belt vs chain folding e-Bikes
A belt-drive electric folding bike for adults is a premium system because it requires virtually no maintenance, lasts a long time, doesn’t require grease, and is silent when running compared to a chain drive.
Suspension vs rigid
The type of fork that comes on your folding e-bike greatly affects the comfort when riding on rough terrain. A suspension fork will absorb more shocks and bumps, allowing you to comfortably ride off-road without experiencing fatigue from vibrations.
Additionally, because you have a motor for power, the loss of performance and speed from suspension is almost canceled out.
Internal gearing vs derailleur
Internal hub gearing is common on e-bikes because it requires very little maintenance compared to a derailleur. It has less exposed parts which reduces wear and tear.
These types of hubs usually can’t get as wide a gear range as a derailleur, but this is pretty much irrelevant as you are powered mostly by the motor on an e-bike.

What Else You Need to Know About Folding Electric Bikes
What to think of full suspension folding electric bikes?
Full suspension on a folding e-bike is a little excessive. In general, this type of bike is uses for urban riding, commuting, or light trail rides. To do this well, all you need is fat tires and/or front fork suspension to absorb the bumps you encounter.
Additionally, a folding e-bike usually won’t have the correct geometry to tackle tough mountain descents and singletrack.
What to think of cheap folding electric bikes?
For cyclists who need a bike for light usage and short trips, without the need to go off-road or carry heavy cargo, a cheap folding e-bike should be able to meet those needs.
For heavier usage or more difficult riding conditions like off-roading or tough gradients, a cheap e-bike might not work effectively or be durable enough.
Electric Bike Classifications
Most folding fat tire electric bikes are Class 1, which means the pedal assistance works up to 20mph. However, there are also Class 2 and 3. They are categorized as follows:
- Class 1: Top speed 20mph
- Class 2: Top speed 20mph Throttle 20mph
- Class 3: Top speed 28mph Throttle 20mph
Hub drive vs mid-drive
Hub drive motors are the cheapest type. They are heavier and are generally found in the rear wheel axle. They power the rear wheel independently of the drivetrain and thus are not as efficient, especially in their power delivery or smoothness.
Mid-drive motors are the premium choice. They are more expensive, lighter, and are found in between the pedals. This location improves the center of gravity. These motors work by powering the drivetrain, delivering a smooth and efficient power output.
Spoke vs cast wheels on a folding bike
Spoke wheels are the premium option. They are more durable and perform better than cast wheels. Cast wheels are found on cheaper models. They require less maintenance and are lightweight, but also less durable.
Electric folding bike types

- Hybrid folding electric bike
- Cargo folding bikes

Considerations for Folding E-Bikes
The earth’s population is continuing to grow, major cities are becoming busier and global warming means that more and more people are becoming environmentally conscious and ‘eco-friendly’. With this in mind, welcome the emergence of the folding e-bike.
A compact, portable, lightweight, fast and convenient commuting bike that not too long ago was only seen on a college campus and outside the occasional coffee shop. They have since burst into the mainstream and is fast becoming the bike of choice for most commuters.
With this rise in popularity, it’s easy to get carried away and end up purchasing a folding e-bike that is not well suited to your needs, therefore, we’ve outlined some must-know considerations before looking to purchase a folding e-bike.
The awesome Swagtron_Eb5-Justine_DTLA-187
While folding bikes, in general, have very closely related pricing structures between competitors based on specific features, the folding e-bike category is much more open and people can end up paying more for features they don’t need. For some basic features, it’s not uncommon to see similar models with a price difference of 1,000.
The reason for this is that it’s a lot more difficult to overprice a non-electric folding bike because customers can easily understand the features. When it comes to a folding e-bike, however, battery wattage, charge time, motor power and a range of other factors can make it much easier to price a product higher with a ‘perceived’ higher value.
The products we review shortly will all take into consideration price comparisons and we’ll break it down so that you can see the competitively priced models, as well as those with a higher price which actually have the quality and additional features to warrant the price.
Size and Weight
This is the key factor that we’ll be looking at in this article and the reason for this is that a small e-bike doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s portable or compact.
When looking for the smallest folding e-bike, we are making the assumption that you want to be able to store it in the trunk of a car or take it on public transport, store it under your desk at work or carry it up to your apartment and store it in a small area (cupboard or hallway) each day. These are urban bikes so we will definitely generalize based on some of these likely scenarios.
These are common reasons that we find people want a small folding e-bike and therefore you need to make sure that as well as being small, it’s also lightweight enough to carry around and can also be folded down quickly and conveniently.
The Swagtron Swagcycle EB-5 e-bike is a great starting commuter bike that packs sufficient power alongside incredible portability. The bike weighs only 37lbs which fiercely contends with some of the lightest folding e-bikes on the market.
The battery range of 15.5 miles makes your daily commute easy and has enough power to tackle an uphill climb giving you the option to pedal, throttle or both. Despite the small size when folded (26 x 15.6 x 23.6 inches), this bike can be adjusted when open to suit both an adult or teenage rider.
- This bike comes pre-assembled which is ideal for those that don’t have many tools or assembly skills
- The bike is height adjustable for use by both adults and teens which makes it a great family bike
- A 15.5 mile battery range is very good for a folding e-bike of this size. A typical full-size folding e-bike can get around 30 – 40 miles on a full charge however these are typically much larger bikes and 2-3 times the price of this model
- The removable battery option is available for charging convenience (though does cost an additional 250)
- Removable power line with quick disconnect is a unique feature that we don’t commonly see meaning you can use this as a manual bike with ease.
- Recharge time of up to 5 hours is a long time considering the battery range is 15 miles.
- A fixed chain with no gears means you rely on the battery as it will be difficult to ride manually.

This bike also comes in at a weight of only 30lbs net and while it’s not the smallest folding e-bike that we’ve come across, dimensions of 26.1 x 15.75 x 25.2 inches mean that it’s certainly small enough to be a contender!

The carbon steel frame means this bike is unfortunately not the lightest when it comes to build quality weighing in at a whopping 70lbs! While it can be folded down to a compact size the weight means it won’t be the truly portable e-bike that many are looking for.
What We Liked

It lacks in power, despite a 300W motor the max speed on these 8” wheels is only 12mph and the battery range of 15 miles means this bike is much more suited to a short commute.
The main feature with this is portability and size, at only 27lbs in weight and dimensions of 19.6 x 11.8 inches you’re getting one of the smallest e-bikes on the market.
What We Liked
- Weighing only 27lbs this bike can easily be carried in a bag (hand luggage) whilst also being able to support weights of 220lbs
- USB charging is a convenient and definitely new technology in the e-bike category
- Phone holder in the handlebar and electric braking system
- With speeds of only 12mph and no pedal assist you’d only be looking to use this bike on small commutes in a city or college campus.
- A max battery range of up to 15 miles isn’t great and emphasis on the fact that this is a short commute bike

14” tires are a great addition to allow for some added comfort (in place of a lack of suspension) and the twist throttle and cruise control handlebars make any ride an easy effortless trip.
What We Liked

Once I got my pakiT, I sold my car! I spent a year driving it as little as possible, testing out the idea, and just needed the perfect bike to make it possible. With my pakiT so light I can easily take it up stairs to our public transit or carry it inside wherever I go, life without a car became a reality. I also have a Burley Travoy which is use with my single speed dahon (a bike I don’t mind locking on the street in theft-prone Bay Area) to handle shopping and Costco runs. The car was sold in February. and I have not missed it at all. I love being able to bike to meet people and then just quickly fold the pakiT into their trunk, it fits in any car. I also can ride it to a car share vehicle and fold it inside if needed, so I don’t have to stress if I do find I need a car. BF made going car free possible for me. Car Free – 5 Bike Fridays
Acquired the Pakit this summer and it has been a match made in heaven ever since. Of the bikes I already own, the Pakit feels great and rides smooth. I enjoy cruising the streets of New York City, and exploring all the things it has to offer. Recently I put the Pakit to the test on European Bike Tour down the Danube covering Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest over 8 days. The bike performed well in city riding, open country road, motorways, bike paths, and even crashed gravel and rocky road. Climbing was comfortable. This bike gets a lot of looks and becomes a conversation piece. The Pakit with 11 speed alfine and carbon belt drive is a winner
Over several years I have acquired several folding bikes. I have a Brompton and a Tikit and now an 11 speed Pakit Elite. The Pakit is by far the lightest and most elegant design. The 11 speed Shimano Alfine hub works flawlessly and has 11 useful evenly spaced gears. It has a titanium seat tube mast which has the unexpected benefit of some flexibility and shock absorption. It weighs just under 20 poundswhich is several pounds less than either the Brompton or TIkit. It rides beautifully. It is a pleasure to carry due to its light weight and clean greaseless Gates belt drive.
Overall it is a winner. It is a great evolution from the Brompton and Tikit.

What to Measure
Your “bike inseam”.- or inside leg length.- is the distance between your body where it sits on your bike saddle and the ground. This will typically be an inch or two longer than the length of your trousers, but you’ll want to measure to be sure. You’ll use this number on the chart to get a feel for how the different models will fit you.
How to Measure
Wearing your regular riding shoes and with your back to the wall, stand with your feet spread so there is about 7 inches between them. this is about the distance apart your feet would be when straddling a bike with your feet on
Place a hardcover book against the wall with the spine of the book facing upward. Slide the book upwards towards your groin until it is solidly against your body. This may be a bit awkward, but is way more comfortable.- and safer!- than trying to ride a bike that is too big.
If you have a buddy helping you, get them to measure from the floor to the top of the book spine while you hold the book in place. If you’re going it alone, carefully hold the book in place and measure from the ground to the top of the book spine.
