Mototec Electric Dirt Bikes Review

Mototec dirt bikes have been around for some time and are often referred to as being a US company based out of Winconsin, and although they do have a base there, they are actually a Chinese company with bases is China and Japan as well as the US. Their full trading name is Yongkang MotoTec Technology Co.ltd They make a range of electric toy products including ATVs, Dirt Bikes, Scooters and Gokarts with 75% of their revenue reportedly being generated in the USA, On offer in their dirt bike range are just 2 different models. They don’t seem to of developed a wide range of choice compared to other products lines like their electric super bikes that have more than 10 different bikes available. You can choose from either the 24v/500w model or a 36v/500w model. Both dirt bikes are nearly the same spec with a different battery which provides a variation in power output. 36v Mototec Dirtbike priced at 489.00 – Available in the blue like the pic above and also green. 24v Mototec Dirtbike priced at 388.00 – available in the orange in the pic and also a Gazella which is like a sandy color. One thing I love about these bikes is their look compared to the Razor dirtbikes. They just look the part. Price wise, I think they are very well pitched being both affordable and reasonable. I actually have them featured in another post writing about the Best Electric Dirt Bikes Under 1000 and the Razors are also featured for their price points. The suspension offered on these bikes is great and something that you don’t get on the Razor on the smaller models in their range, a huge plus point for Mototec there.

You get a key ignition which clicks round to turn the battery on. The battery charge has a display to show how much charge remains to the nearest 25%. This replicates a fuel gauge which is a nice touch.

Under the right handlebar grip you get a kill switch which can be operated by the thumb of the rider and simply cuts the power when pressed in.

On the motor just above the position of the left foot when the rider sits on the bike is a key operated speed setting. Here the parent can set the speed, choosing between 3 options, Low, Medium and High. This allows progression for the rider as they gain confidence.

The disc brakes are another great touch on the front and back wheels, although worth noting that many people call them hydraulic disc brakes which they are not. They are cable operated, and although they are discs, hydraulic disc brakes would offer a much greater performance.

Mototec manufacture their bikes on a steel frame, as do Razor and is what you would expect for the low price of the bikes. That does mean though they carry abit of weight.

Once the speed is set, simply turn the ignition then twist and go using the throttle on the right side of the handle bar.

I love this dirt bike review if the MT-Dirt-500 by a kid. Kids have no reason to lie so I feel like it’s good honest review.

Razor is a brand that went huge when they released their version of the classic toy, the 2 wheeled manual scooter back in 2000. In fact my son has one in the garage as I write and I see plenty of kids at the park with them so they are still very popular today some 20 years on.

Like Mototec they too make other kids toys including hover boards, electric scooters and dirt bikes. This all came after their scooter success.

In my opinion Razors electric dirt bikes look alot more childish in design compared to the Mototec style.

What You Get With A Razor Dirt Bike:

Straight away you can see that Razor save more features for the larger bikes where as you get them on the Mototec as standard and in some cases the Mototec equivalent is arguably better.

So on the MX350 which is the second smallest Razor, you only get a back brake and no suspension on either the front or the back, which is the same with the MX125.

Razor MX 650 Dirt Bike Review

Personally I lean towards the Mototec because I feel they offer a better all round product, taking into account the looks and features.

Should Razor bring the smaller electric dirt bikes upto spec with the bigger ones then I think Mototec and Razor are pretty level pegging.

While there are many makes and models on the market, you may get more peace of mind buying from a leading US brand such as Razor which has a good reputation for build quality, durability, warranty and spare parts availability.

In fact Razor started out in 2000 making electric scooters (they’ve sold over 13 million of them!) and they now make a wide range of electric dirt bikes, go karts and ATVs for kids.

Smallest Razor Dirt Bike – for Little Ones

The MX125 (check price on Walmart) is the smallest Razor dirt bike and is exclusive to Walmart. It has a top speed of just 8 mph and simple on/off single speed so it should be slow and easy enough for little ones to control safely, though parental supervision is a must.

It’s also only half the weight of the next models up (the MX350 range) which makes it easier for small children to handle or pick up off the ground. But we do worry that kids may outgrow it all too soon – the Razor MX350 could provide more years of use for fast growing kids…

Budget Choice for Ages 5-10

The Razor MX350 Dirt Rocket (check price on Amazon) is a big seller for kids under 10, with a top speed of 14 mph, powered by a 350W motor. The MX350 is identical to the SX350 and MX400 except for the colors and some small styling variations.

With 12-inch pneumatic knobby tires, this a scaled down version of a classic adult motocross bike. It may take more time to learn to ride than the MX125 but it’s quick, great fun and the weight limit of 140 lbs makes it suitable for kids up to pre-teens so it should provide better value for money over the years.

Best Value Dirt Bike for Kids and Early Teens

The Razor SX500 Dirt Rocket McGrath (check price on Amazon) and the MX500 Dirt Rocket are almost identical – they both have a more powerful 500W motor giving them a top speed of 15 mph – quite a step up from the models above.

Instead of just a rear brake they have dual disc brakes for better stopping ability and dual suspension (adjustable at rear) to smooth out big bumps off-road. The SX500 is ready for dirt with 10″ Supercross tires (front and rear specific tread) whereas the MX500 has a larger 16″ pneumatic knobby tire at the front and 14″ at the rear.

Crucially, both models also have variable speed so you can increase speed incrementally, whereas the smaller models above only have an on/off single speed which can cause a more jerky start.

Thanks to an extra third battery, you still get 40 minutes of continuous use on these bikes too – good for about 10 miles. The SX500 and MX500 are quick, with good brakes and suspension. The increased weight limit of 175 lbs plus a 4″ higher seat makes them more suitable for older kids and some teens too.

Razor Dirt Bike Sizes

As you can see from the Razor dirt bike comparison chart above, the seven different models can be easily split into 4 suggested age ranges, based on many real life user reviews:

Little Ones Aged 4-8

The Razor MX125 is the smallest, lightest and (by far) the slowest model. This Razor 12v dirt bike has a top speed of just 8 mph and the lowest seat height of 17″ makes it the safest choice for little ones.

Young Kids Aged 5-10

The Razor MX350 / SX350 / MX400 are all the same bike – the only differences are the colors and cosmetic styling. Models in this MX350 range weigh twice as much as the MX125, have a 22% larger frame and a top speed of 14 mph which makes them more suitable for slightly older or larger kids.

Older Kids Aged 8-14

The Razor MX500 / SX500 are the same bike – again, the only differences are the colors and cosmetic styling. They’re bigger, heavier and quicker than the MX350 range above. The frame is 20% larger, weight limit is 35 lbs higher, seat height is 4″ higher and they’re 1 mph quicker.

But they’re not just bigger versions of the MX350 range. They have extra features found on ‘proper’ adult dirt bikes such as dual suspension, dual disc brakes and variable (not single) speed. These features give them a more refined ride than the smaller models and they perform better off road.

Older Kids and Teens Aged 10-16

The Razor MX650 has the same size frame, seat height and weight as the MX500 range above and it also has the same cool features like dual suspension, dual brakes and variable speed.

But it has a more powerful 650W motor that makes it the quickest Razor dirt bike, with a top speed of 17 mph – 2 mph quicker than the MX500 range and with faster acceleration. It also has a much higher weight limit of up to 220 lbs which can cope more easily with teens and even small adults.

Recommended Manufacturer Age Range

Razor make great dirt bikes but they are famous for recommending minimum ages that seem way too low for the actual size of the bike! If parents follow the official Razor dirt bike age range they often end up returning the bike as it turns out to be much smaller than they anticipated…

So why do so many buyers find these ages unrealistic? Let’s take the MX350 range as an example – Razor recommend it for those aged 13 whereas real world reviews from many users suggest 5-10 may be more appropriate.

The 4 year old is maybe a little small but the 7 year old is a good size for this bike. But if you followed Razor’s age guide and bought it for a 15 year old – yes, they could probably squeeze onto it but each knee could be splayed out so far they’d be in different zip codes!

Durability Build Quality

The Razor MX350 Dirt Rocket Electric Motocross Bike isn’t winning medals for durability and build quality. Primary materials used here were some lightweight metal and shatter-resistant plastic. It’s a solid enough build to handle a rider weight limit of 140 pounds and pass safety standards. For another durable bike, you’ll want to check out our MacWheel Wrangler review.

Performance (Speed Acceleration)

The most important feature here, however, is the knobby tires. The Razor Bike MX350 Electric Dirt Bikes use pneumatic knobby tires that do well in varied terrain, whether it’s muddy, soft dirt, or sand. This pairs well with its chain-driven motor that begs you to push it up to its maximum speed of 14mph—a fast, yet still very safe speed for children, not like the 45mph of the HPC Revolution AT. But, if you want something just a little faster and not crazy fast, you’ll want to look at the Rambo electric bike, SDU folding electric bike, or the Jetson folding bike.

Unfortunately, the 24V lead acid battery is abysmal. When charged to its fullest in 12 hours, you get about 30 minutes of runtime. But that’s if you’re constantly running it for the full 30 minutes. Ideally, you’ll drive for 7 miles before it quits on you. That’s painfully short compared to the Juiced RipCurrent S. Unfortunately; this model doesn’t count as a good hunting ebike since it’s not strong enough.

Safety Features

The Razor MX350 Dirt Rocket Electric Motocross Bike doesn’t offer much in the way of safety features—not even a headlight. However, its build is naturally safer to ride. Its rear wheel has a rear brake that can be operated with the handles, as is the twist grip throttle. And the tires already offer great traction for a much safer ride.

If you aren’t impressed by the Razor MX350 Dirt Rocket Electric Motocross Bike—we understand. But your kids? They’ll love it! After all, it’s their own electric motorcycle. And you’ll be happy because it only cost you 260. It’s a much safer and cheaper investment than the IZIP E3 Peak Plus, mainly because you’ll still have a budget for safety gear, making it the best off-road electric bike on a budget.

The Razor MX350 Dirt Rocket Electric Motocross Bike is arguably the best electric dirt bike for your kids; it was designed to be easy to handle In no time they’ll be tearing through mud and dirt at 14mph, while the thick, knobby wheels provide good traction and stability.
