Estarli e20, £1,295: I love this bike
The Estarli e20 is a perfect entry-level folding ebike. It’s just over £1,000 but we think it has a lot to offer for its price bracket. We found it light and comfy to ride. The larger tyres than most folding bikes (20 inch rather than 16 inch) mean you get power, comfort and good handling. It’s got a 7-speed manual gear and 5 power assist modes. Not only that it looks great, with the battery cleverly hidden in the seat post.
We found it wasn’t the most compact bike when folded. And its other drawback is range. 31 miles from the slightly small battery (the price that had to paid for concealing it so well). But these are only minor quibbles. this a great, good value bike and is the one to beat in our tests.

Estarli e16.7, £1,250: best lightweight ebike
The Estarli e16.7 is a lightweight, folding e-bike built with commuting and everyday use in mind. It’s the new competitor headache that Brompton didn’t want – and with good reason, this bike is excellent. The e16.7 has the same features, ride quality and comfort of bikes twice its £1,250 price tag.
This really could be the answer to your city-riding prayers – and in riding and spending time using the bike, we found it easy to use, straightforward, and very satisfying to own. It should appeal to anyone interested in riding an ebike on a daily basis, especially commuters.

Forme Buxton Pro E, £1,399: built for anyone, anywhere
The Forme Buxton Pro E is an excellent folding ebike that can definitely be considered a competitor against the more well-known brands like MiRider and GoCycle – but for half the price.
Competitor bikes are built for one purpose, which they excel at, but this really is the ebike for everyone, everywhere. And it’s exceptionally comfortable. however many times I mention this simply not do this bike justice. Every ebike takes a couple of minutes on the first ride to get a feel for, but I found the Buxton Pro E verging on cosy when I first took to the saddle.

MATE X, £2,950: comfy in your arms as well as your seat
MATE X is hands down the comfiest bike we’ve ever ridden. This thing glides over potholes and bumps like they aren’t there. Fat wheels, padded handles, front and back suspension mean we’ve never had so much fun riding a bike.
Sure, it’s big and heavy. And it definitely folds for space not carrying. it’s 30kg and you need to be strong to even lift it.
You get a distinctive, highly visible riding stance. when we were on it, we felt like we were on a bike SUV in terms of seeing and being seen. And we should also call out the ni ne levels of electric assistance and eight-speed gearbox. You get a lot of control from this bike.
MATE City, £1,599: a nimble bargain
The MATE City offers style, comfort AND functionality at a reasonable price. It’s a very nippy mover that we found easy to ride in the city with its many obstacles and overtaking cars. And we got close to the 50-mile range even with some hills.
The main compromise is that it’s a maybe little bulky at 20kg and not the most compact when folded. The weight, though, is partly due to the full suspension front and rear. which means we enjoyed riding this and found it comfortable on and off-road. so it’s good for commuting and weekend leisure.
Fiido L3, under £1,000: changed my commute for the better
Under £1,000 and with a range of over 100 miles. this is an incredible bike for the price. We found it to be an incredibly comfy ride thanks to the cushioned bar-stool-like seat and suspension.
There are a couple of compromises. The wheels are 14-inch, which is quite small although we found the ride on this to be pretty stable. We didn’t think initial acceleration was the best due to its cadence sensor. And it only has a single gear for manual cycling which can therefore be quite hard work. But at this price, it’s a bargain and you can just keep going and going thanks to the amazing range. Expect to see a lot of delivery riders on this.

Rad Power’s RadExpand is a versatile folding fat-tire electric bike that can conquer different types of terrain. You can use it equally well for city commutes as well as for off-road gravel and dirt detours.
It folds down quickly and in a few steps—its folded dimensions are 29″ x 25″ x 41″. However, it also comes with a 62.5 lbs. weight, so it takes some effort to carry it up a flight of stairs.
RadMini is equipped with a 750W geared rear hub motor, therefore, power will not be a problem. The range shouldn’t be either, considering the massive 48V, 14Ah (672Wh) battery. According to Rad, you can expect up to 45 miles on one charge.

Aventon Sinch ST is a folding bike that offers good value for its price. You might want it for commuting or even riding with the family, whatever you need a Aventon is a great place to start. If you are short of space and looking for something small that still packs a punch, this is the bike for you.
The bike looks rugged, with its oversized tubing and reinforced cabling it isn’t going to let you down. With it’s disc brakes and front suspension it’s not just ready for the road but those trails too with those huge 4″ oversized tires.
Aventon Sinch is one of the best value for money folding bikes currently on the market and with all its accessories well worth a look into.

Engwe EP-2 Pro is a solid choice both for urban commuters and off-roading enthusiasts.
This folding electric bike comes with 20 x 4″ wheels and tires that don’t provide the most stability on trails, but definitely don’t lack grip due to their width. Therefore, they’re best suited for bumpy city streets, but you can also take them onto light trails, gravel, and dirt roads.
We gave Engwe EP-2 Pro the podium place because it packs decent components in a good-looking package that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.
When it comes to electronics, Engwe equipped EP-2 Pro with a 750W rear hub motor and a respectable 615 Wh battery. This setup translates to a 28 MPH top speed and a 50 mile maximum range. Ride it in one of the five PAS levels or use the throttle to get maximum power straight away.
What we also liked when reviewing this bike is all the accessories. You’ll get fenders, front and rear lights, a kickstand, and even a rear rack. That’s all you need to commute every day, no matter the time and weather conditions.
Folding the bike is easy as well, you just need to fold the frame in half and collapse the handlebars, which doesn’t take more than 20 seconds. After that, you can store or transport EP-2 Pro without any issues.

Aventon Sinch is one of the most affordable choices on our list. But don’t let that fool you, this folding e-bike hides some nice surprises that you’ll like when you take it for a ride.
Aventon Sinch is propelled by a 500W rear hub motor that’s powered by a huge 672Wh battery. You can control these electronics with a big backlit LCD display that resembles a smartphone in design and size.
This is a Class 2 e-bike with pedal-assistance, throttle, and a 20 MPH maximum assisted speed. It combines 4″ tires with a suspension fork to let you make off-road detours without second thoughts.
You also get a 7-speed Shimano drivetrain and mechanical disc brakes, so Sinch is ready to ride up steep hills and descend even steeper hills.

Charter F boasts a 250W geared rear hub motor with an integrated 36V battery. The battery is hidden inside the seat post, so it’s hard to tell this is a foldable e-bike until you see it speed across the city.
This is a budget bike, so it does come with some entry-level parts, like the basic 7-speed drivetrain and V-brakes. According to the company, it provides a range of up to 30 miles, which is pretty good.
Buzz Charter F has three levels of pedal assist that you can use to complete your commute faster, climb more easily, or extend your leisure weekend rides.
Charter F doesn’t have any accessories, so you’ll have to wear a backpack if you want to bring anything with you on a ride. It does have a kickstand, though, so you can make quick stops.

What Should I Look For in a Folding Electric Bike?
You might have experience with buying bicycles, but purchasing a folding electric bike is a bit more challenging. In addition to all the standard features you need to consider, you should also think about the electric components and the folding mechanism.
The folded dimensions should be small enough to fit your car’s trunk or the storage space in your apartment. Most models nowadays have easy-to-use folding mechanisms, so that shouldn’t be an issue.
A good folding electric bike should be compact, light, practical, and easy to fold.
Next, you should think about the motor and the battery. If you live somewhere hilly or windy, you should get a more powerful motor and a bigger battery. Also, choose between a hub and a mid-drive motor. The former is cheaper, but the latter is more stable because of better weight distribution.

What to Keep in Mind About Motors?
For practical purposes, most folding e-bikes come with hub motors. However, there are some exceptions, including a few models on our list, that have mid-drive motors.
The reason why hub motors are the go-to choice for electric mini bikes compared to other types is the lack of space. Folding electric bicycles are small, compact, and need to remain that way to fold small. If you add a mid-drive motor, folding will not be impossible, but it takes more engineering to develop an efficient folding mechanism.
Hub motors can be placed in the front or in the rear wheel. But in most cases, you’ll see hub motors in the rear wheel, as this is a much better solution.
Front-wheel hub motors are cheaper to install, but they have a few disadvantages. Namely, they affect the bike’s handling and don’t offer as much traction.
When riding a bike, most of the rider’s weight is on the rear wheel, so the tire has plenty of grip and won’t skid if you apply a lot of torque. On the other hand, the front wheel might spin out if the motor is too powerful and there’s not enough weight keeping the tire in contact with the ground.
Of all the available options, mid-drive motors are usually the most powerful and offer the best riding experience. They provide assistance directly through the pedals, so you have a good feel of how much of your own power you need to apply.
But in addition to the motor placement, you also need to think about power—watts and torque.
Watts—Is There Such a Thing as Enough?
If we assume that Watts=Power is correct, we can conclude that the more Watts your foldable electric bike has, the better. But that’s not completely true for a folding electric bike. Due to smaller wheels, you don’t need that much power to feel like you’re getting somewhere. Too much power can even be dangerous as the small-diameter wheels are not as stable as larger ones.
The majority of bikes on our list have either 250W or 750W motors, but there are a few 500W models as well. The wattage depends on the amount of assistance you require, but it also depends on your country’s e-bike laws. For example, in the UK, e-bikes are allowed to have 250W; in the EU, e-bikes can have up to 500W motors; in the US, e-bikes are limited to 750W.
But wattage is not the only metric you should be worried about. You should also consider the torque. A 500W motor with 40Nm or 80Nm of torque is not the same. torque means that the motor will have more immediate power, climb better, and offer faster acceleration.
Keep in mind that more Watts and more torque does not translate to a higher maximum assisted speed. Most folding e-bikes are Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes and are thus limited to between 15–20 MPH. The only exception is Class 3 e-bikes or speed-pedelecs, which can go up to 28 MPH. But these are rare in the folding world.
As a rule of thumb, if you are a heavier individual or you live somewhere hilly, you should look for a motor with more power. A 250W motor with little torque might struggle to pull you up a steep hill.
Which Wheel Size Is the Best?
Wheel size is one of the main considerations when choosing the best folding electric bike for you. The smaller the wheel, the more compact the bike will be when folded. However, small wheels come with some limitations, especially when it comes to the terrain they can conquer.
Most electric mini bikes have 20″ wheels, including the models on our list. This wheel size offers a good compromise between practicality, stability, and rolling efficiency.
If you want, you can go even smaller and choose 16″ wheels, but keep in mind that you’re limiting yourself to the choice of terrain you can ride on. Such small wheels won’t feel stable on pretty much anything but completely smooth city streets. Also, they don’t roll over bumps and rocks as easily, so comfort is affected as well.
Small wheels mean that you will have to pedal a bit more to reach a certain speed. But that is not a big problem considering you’ll be getting assistance from the motor.
Those who don’t want to compromise on speed and pedaling efficiency can choose a folding bike with full-size, 700C wheels. But keep in mind that such bikes don’t fold down as small as models with smaller wheels. Thus, storage and mobility become bigger challenges.
To sum, if you’re uncertain, go for 20″ wheels. They’re the gold standard when it comes to folding electric bicycles, as they combine the best of both worlds.

The Gocycle GX Is The Ultimate Lightweight Folding eBike
Gocycle has been making folding ebikes for years and reached out to us about their latest creation, the Gocycle GX. They brought one over for us to run through the paces and after spending a few weeks with it, we’re back to unpack everything we’ve learned.
Disclaimer: Gocycle let us use a GX for a few weeks free of charge for the purposes of this review.
Compact Functional
Right off the bat, the form factor of the Gocycle GX stands out. It is a mid-sized ebike that leverages some impressive engineering feats to pack a ton of functionality into a high tech but easy to use package. As an oversized man myself, I was impressed that the medium-sized frame was able to extend the seat for a comfortable ride for me and compress down to suit my vertically challenged wife. I think my 9 and 10 year old sons could have ridden it had I trusted them with it.

The sturdy alloy front frame and magnesium drive gave me confidence that it would support my weight while still allowing its 38.6 pounds to be easily carried around. Moving it around the garage was a breeze, but it really shined when it was time to fold it up for a trip in the car. The Gocycle GX folds down so compact that it is easy to maneuver around and stuff into the trunk where a normal bike or even a child-sized bike wouldn’t have a shot at fitting.
Its size and efficient folding makes it a great option for those on the go. It would be right at home in the corner of an RV, ready to be whipped out at the next destination or in a boat. We didn’t do either of those things, but found that it gave us new freedoms to explore more remote destinations with more luggage or gear than we would have otherwise been able to pack into our vehicles.

The Gocycle GX rides on a pair of street friendly 20″ tires that strike a nice balance between ride quality and weight.The Gocycle utilizes a unique hub mounting method that allows the tires and tubes to be removed without having to take the wheel off of the bike. It also brings a unique look to the bike.
The GX breezes along on the street, boosted by the GX’s powerful 500 watt motor. It kicks in to assist your pedaling activity with a smooth burst of power based on pedaling cadence and power. A somewhat hidden throttle button up front gives riders the ability to summon the motor on command, zipping along without having to pedal.
As a larger rider, I found the Gocycle to be a reasonable fit, though not as capable as full-sized bicycles. I did enjoy the lightweight feel of the bike and smooth tires. The overall experience was fantastic and I expect it to find a place in the homes of customers looking for a higher end, folding electric bike. There truly aren’t many ebikes on the market that deliver a high quality product that folds down into a truly portable package, but the Gocycle GX delivers in spades.
Customized
At 3,299, the Gocycle GX is not cheap and neither are the accessories. It is a high end, lightweight folding ebike that packs a ton of utility, range, and useful features into a very compact package. Gocycle included a front pannier with our loaner, which made it easy to bring a few maintenance items, water bottles, and snacks along with us on our test rides. I personally prefer to carry gear around on the back, but it’s nice to have the option.
A removable 294Wh battery (Gocycle sells extra batteries for a steep 849) provides up to 40 miles of range in ideal conditions, depending on how much assistance is required from the motor, rider weight, and terrain. It charges back up in 7 hours with the included charger or in just 3.5 hours with the optional fast charger (154.99). Though pricey, the fast charger is a great option for those looking to get more miles on their bike in a single day.
The GocycleConnect app lets the owner connect to the bike via bluetooth to change the riding mode between Eco, City, On-Demand, and a custom mode that can be tuned to your exact liking. Owners can regulate the speed of the bike, use the app as a trip computer, and even track fitness progress. It adds some real value to the bike ownership experience and frankly, is a feature that many ebikes don’t come with.
Summary
The Gocycle GX sits between the 2,799 Gocycle GS and the carbon fiber 4,799 Gocycle GXi. It offers owners all the functionality of Gocycles brilliant engineering and lightweight folding tech at a more affordable price point. Having said that, it is still pricey. Quality commands a premium and while it may be the middle child in the Gocycle family, it is by no means an affordable electric bike.
It delivers a specific product for buyers looking for a high quality, lightweight, folding electric bike that are willing to pay for a better product. The riding experience is seamless, letting less tech savvy owners simply get on and ride. advanced owners have the ability to dig into the app to custom build a riding profile to their needs. That’s impressive.
