It’s also only half the weight of the next models up (the MX350 range) which makes it easier for small children to handle or pick up off the ground. But we do worry that kids may outgrow it all too soon – the Razor MX350 could provide more years of use for fast growing kids…

The Razor MX350 Dirt Rocket (check price on Amazon) is a big seller for kids under 10, with a top speed of 14 mph, powered by a 350W motor. The MX350 is identical to the SX350 and MX400 except for the colors and some small styling variations.

With 12-inch pneumatic knobby tires, this a scaled down version of a classic adult motocross bike. It may take more time to learn to ride than the MX125 but it’s quick, great fun and the weight limit of 140 lbs makes it suitable for kids up to pre-teens so it should provide better value for money over the years.

The Razor SX500 Dirt Rocket McGrath (check price on Amazon) and the MX500 Dirt Rocket are almost identical – they both have a more powerful 500W motor giving them a top speed of 15 mph – quite a step up from the models above.

Instead of just a rear brake they have dual disc brakes for better stopping ability and dual suspension (adjustable at rear) to smooth out big bumps off-road. The SX500 is ready for dirt with 10″ Supercross tires (front and rear specific tread) whereas the MX500 has a larger 16″ pneumatic knobby tire at the front and 14″ at the rear.

Crucially, both models also have variable speed so you can increase speed incrementally, whereas the smaller models above only have an on/off single speed which can cause a more jerky start.

Thanks to an extra third battery, you still get 40 minutes of continuous use on these bikes too – good for about 10 miles. The SX500 and MX500 are quick, with good brakes and suspension. The increased weight limit of 175 lbs plus a 4″ higher seat makes them more suitable for older kids and some teens too.

Ultimate Choice – Best for Older Kids and Teens

The Razor MX650 is the fastest Razor dirt bike, thanks to a massive 650W motor. This also helps give it the highest weight limit of 220 lbs – enough to cope with teens and even small adults (check price on Amazon).

Except for the larger motor, the MX650 has exactly the same specifications as the MX500 with variable speed, dual suspension and dual brakes. Despite the extra power you still get 40 minutes of continuous use (about 11 miles of riding) and the charging time remains the same at 12 hours.

The MX650 is the ultimate electric dirt bike in Razor’s range. The higher top speed and weight limit makes it better for use on hills and by older kids, teens and even some adults.

Little Ones Aged 4-8

The Razor MX125 is the smallest, lightest and (by far) the slowest model. This Razor 12v dirt bike has a top speed of just 8 mph and the lowest seat height of 17″ makes it the safest choice for little ones.

Young Kids Aged 5-10

The Razor MX350 / SX350 / MX400 are all the same bike – the only differences are the colors and cosmetic styling. Models in this MX350 range weigh twice as much as the MX125, have a 22% larger frame and a top speed of 14 mph which makes them more suitable for slightly older or larger kids.

Older Kids Aged 8-14

The Razor MX500 / SX500 are the same bike – again, the only differences are the colors and cosmetic styling. They’re bigger, heavier and quicker than the MX350 range above. The frame is 20% larger, weight limit is 35 lbs higher, seat height is 4″ higher and they’re 1 mph quicker.

But they’re not just bigger versions of the MX350 range. They have extra features found on ‘proper’ adult dirt bikes such as dual suspension, dual disc brakes and variable (not single) speed. These features give them a more refined ride than the smaller models and they perform better off road.

Older Kids and Teens Aged 10-16

The Razor MX650 has the same size frame, seat height and weight as the MX500 range above and it also has the same cool features like dual suspension, dual brakes and variable speed.

But it has a more powerful 650W motor that makes it the quickest Razor dirt bike, with a top speed of 17 mph – 2 mph quicker than the MX500 range and with faster acceleration. It also has a much higher weight limit of up to 220 lbs which can cope more easily with teens and even small adults.

Razor make great dirt bikes but they are famous for recommending minimum ages that seem way too low for the actual size of the bike! If parents follow the official Razor dirt bike age range they often end up returning the bike as it turns out to be much smaller than they anticipated…

So why do so many buyers find these ages unrealistic? Let’s take the MX350 range as an example – Razor recommend it for those aged 13 whereas real world reviews from many users suggest 5-10 may be more appropriate.

The 4 year old is maybe a little small but the 7 year old is a good size for this bike. But if you followed Razor’s age guide and bought it for a 15 year old – yes, they could probably squeeze onto it but each knee could be splayed out so far they’d be in different zip codes!

Always check your child’s weight against the recommended weight limit before making a purchase.

If your child is way too light, they may have difficulty controlling the bike. If they are too heavy, there is an increased chance of the bike toppling over and causing injury – it will also reduce top speed and battery life.

Top Speed of Each Model

Razor electric dirt bikes do not have a parental speed control (governor). They don’t have engine braking either so the bike only slows down gradually if you lift off the throttle and it can coast on hills. Adult supervision is highly recommended, particularly when your child first starts to ride.

Battery Life and Recharge Time

All these bikes are fitted with one, two or three 12V sealed lead-acid batteries that can provide 30 to 40 minutes of continuous use, depending on the model (see the Razor dirt bike comparison chart above).

The batteries take up to 12 hours to fully recharge, except on the MX125 which only needs 6 hours because it only has one battery.

How long the battery lasts per full charge depends a lot on how and where you use the bike. If the rider is a light weight and the ground is level and smooth then the battery will last much longer than a heavy rider trying to go full power uphill or over rough terrain.

Razor recommend not storing batteries in temperatures below freezing. You may therefore need to remove the batteries during Winter, depending on your local climate. They also recommend recharging the batteries at least once a month or they may no longer accept a charge.

Conclusion – Razor Dirt Bike Comparison

Razor produce a wide range of electric dirt bikes for kids aged 4 right up to late teens so you’re sure to find a suitable model for your child. But the range is unnecessarily complicated by the fact that some of the ‘different’ models are actually the same bike in a different color! In reality there are only 4 variants to choose from.

For younger kids, the MX350 range is likely to provide better long term value for money (compared to the tiny MX125) as kids grow so fast.

For older kids and teens it’s a tougher choice – the SX500 range is the same size as the more expensive MX650 and has all the same off-road features so is great value. But it is slightly slower and has a lower weight limit – for the ultimate bike we’d choose the MX650 if budget permitted.

Razor recommends that children under the age of 14 not be permitted to use the SX500/MX500 and that children under the age of 16 not be permitted to use the MX650. This recommendation is based not just on age or weight or height – it reflects consideration of expected maturity and skills as well as physical size. The recommended rider age of 14 years or older for SX500/ MX500 and rider age of 16 years or older for MX650 are only estimates and can be affected by the rider’s size, weight or skills – not every child 14 years old will be suited to the SX500/MX500 and not every child 16 years old will be suited to the MX650. Certainly, any rider unable to fit comfortably on the SX500/MX500/MX650 should not attempt to ride it, but a parent’s decision to allow his or her child to ride these products should be based on the child’s maturity, skill, and ability to follow rules. Razor emphasizes that adults are strongly advised not to disregard Razor’s recommendations or permit younger children to ride the SX500/MX500/MX650.

DO NOT EXCEED THE WEIGHT LIMIT OF 175 lb (79 kg) for SX500/MX500 and 220 lb (100 kg) for MX650. Remove contents from the box. Remove the separators that protect the components from damage during shipping.Inspect the contents of the box for scratches in the paint, dents, or kinked cables that may have occurred during shipping. Because the motorbike was 95 percent assembled and packed at the factory, there should not be any problems, even if the box has a few scars or dents.

Attaching the HandlebarsRequired Tools: 6 mm Allen Wrench and 5 mm Allen Wrench (included)

Align the fender with the hole in the fork and insert the bolt. Tighten securely using a 10 mm wrench and 5 mm Allen wrench.

Attaching the Number PlateRequired Tools: Phillips Screwdriver (included)MX500/MX650 ModelsRemove screw from front fork.Align the number plate with the hole in the fork and tighten with a Phillips screwdriver.

SX500 ModelSlip the cables through the slit on the top of the number plate.Align the number plate with the holes on the fork and snap on the number plate.

Installing the Front WheelRequired Tools: 14 mm Wrench and 17 mm Wrench (MX500/MX650 Models) (included) 17 mm Wrench and 19 mm Wrench (SX500 Model) (included)

  • Position wheel in front fork and slide disc brake into caliper.
  • Slide axle through fork, spacer, and wheel hub. When the axle passes through the other side of the wheel hub, add the other spacer, and slide through the fork. Secure with washer and nut.Note: Front axle is installed with the spacer between the fork and wheel for all Dirt Rockets.
  • With a 14 mm and 17 mm wrench, tighten the front wheel.MX500/MX650 ModelsSX500 Model
  • With a 17 mm and 19 mm wrench, tighten the front wheel.

Inflating the TiresTires are inflated when shipped, but they invariably may lose some pressure between the point of manufacturing and your purchase. Always inflate tires to the correct PSI before first-time use.Lower air pressure can result in a shorter ride time. Periodically check tires. Reinflate when needed.

  • Using a bicycle-style tire pump equipped with a Schrader-type valve, inflate the tires to the correct PSI indicated on the sidewall of the tires.


Your electric motorbike may not have a fully charged battery; therefore you must charge the battery prior to use.

  • Initial charge time: 12 hours.
  • Recharge time: up to 12 hours, even if the light turns green. Recommended maximum charging time is 24 hours.
  • Always charge the battery immediately after riding.
  • Fully charge the battery before storing for extended periods of time.
  • Unplug the charger from the wall outlet when not in use.
  • Failure to recharge the battery periodically may result in a battery that will not accept a charge.
  • Make sure the power switch is turned OFF when the unit is not in use. If the power switch is left on for an extended period of time, the battery may reach a stage at which it will no longer hold a charge.
  • To ensure long battery life, never store the product in freezing or below-freezing temperatures! Freezing will permanently damage the battery.
  • Run time: Up to 40 minutes of continuous ride time.Run time may vary depending on riding conditions, rider weight, climate, and/or proper maintenance.
  • Battery life can vary depending on the proper maintenance and usage of the unit.

Charger(Note: Charger design may vary from one shown)

  • Plug the charger plug into a wall outlet. The light on the charger should be green.Note: If the green light (LED) does not turn on, try a different outlet.
  • Note: Make sure the power button is in the OFF position. Plug the charger into the charger port. The light on the charger should turn red during charging. The light will turn green again when charging is complete.


  • BrakeCheck the brakes for proper function. When you squeeze the brake levers, the brakes should provide positive braking action. Make sure that brakes are not rubbing when the brake levers are released.
  • TiresPeriodically inspect the tires for excess wear and replace them as needed. Regularly check the tire pressure and inflate as needed. If you get a flat tire, the inner tube can be patched or a new tube can be purchased from Razor or an authorized repair center.
  • Frame, Fork, and HandlebarsCheck for cracks or broken connections. Although broken frames are rare, it is possible for an aggressive rider to run into a curb or object, and wreck and bend or break a frame. Get in the habit of inspecting your electric motorbike on a regular basis.
  • Hardware/Lose PartsBefore every ride, check all parts, such as nuts, bolts, cables, fasteners, etc., to ensure they are secure and assembled correctly.There should not be any unusual rattles or sounds from loose parts or broken components. If the unit is damaged, do not ride. Reference “Safety Warnings” on pages 1 and 2 of this manual.
  • Safety GearAlways wear proper protective gear, such as an approved safety helmet. Elbow pads and kneepads are recommended.Always wear athletic shoes (lace-up shoes with rubber soles) and keep shoelaces tied and out of the way of the wheels, motor and drive system. NEVER RIDE BAREFOOTED OR IN SANDALS.
  • Laws and RegulationsAlways check and obey any local laws or regulations.
  • InsuranceDo not assume that your existing insurance policies necessarily provide coverage for motorbike use. Check with your insurance company for information regarding insurance.
  • StorageProlonged exposure to UV rays, rain, and the elements may damage the enclosure materials, store indoors when not in use.


Starting the Electric ProductPlace both hands on the handlebars. Slowly push forward with one foot and apply the throttle (A).Note: Keep both feet on the foot pegs when the unit is in motion.

Stopping the Electric ProductRelease the throttle (A) and apply the brakes, by squeezing the brake levers (B C).Note: When coming to a complete stop, place both feet on the ground to balance the unit.


Turn the power switch “OFF” before beginning repair or maintenance:

Adjusting the BrakesRequired Tools: 5 mm Allen Wrench (included)

The brake lever is fitted with a cable adjuster to compensate for cable stretch and/or to fine-tune the lever movement to brake engagement.

  • To adjust brake cable play, thread the brake lever adjuster in or out 1/4 to 1/2 turn until the desired brake adjustment is attained. Most adjustments are complete at this step. If the brake still needs further adjustment, proceed to step 2.
  • If the brake has too much slack, loosen the rear anchor bolt with a 5 mm Allen wrench and pull the brake wire tighter. The distance of the brake wire between the end of the cable and the anchor bolt should be between 37 mm and 44 mm.
  • If the brake rotor is dragging on the brake pads, use your fingers to twist the caliper adjuster in either direction until the rotor is centered between pads.

Testing the Brakes. To use the brakes, squeeze the brake levers to increase the pressure on the brakes. The brake levers are fitted with a cable adjuster to compensate for cable stretch and/or to fine-tune the lever movement to brake engagement. If brakes are not engaging properly, follow instructions for adjusting the brakes.Note: The brake levers contain safety switches to cut power to the motor when the brakes are applied. In an emergency, applying the brakes will always stop the product from moving. Do not disable or replace these brake levers with anything other than genuine Razor replacement parts.

Replacing the FusesMX500/MX650Required Tools: 4 mm Allen Wrench, 5 mm Allen Wrench, 10 mm Wrench, and Phillips Screwdriver (included)

  • Using a 5 mm Allen wrench and a 10 mm wrench remove the four (4) Allen bolts that hold the fairing in place. The two (2) screws at the bottom are held by 10 mm locknuts.
  • Using a 5 mm Allen wrench and a 10 mm wrench remove the two (2) Allen bolts located underneath the rear of the seat. The two (2) screws are held by 10 mm locknuts.
  • Push the seat back and remove it.
  • Using a 4 mm Allen wrench locate and remove the two (2) bolts on top of the battery cover and using a Phillips screwdriver locate and remove the four (4) screws that attach the battery cover.Remove the battery cover and set it aside.
  • Locate the three (3) fuse boxes attached to the batteries.
  • Check all three (3) fuses to see if any fuses have burned out. Remove any fuse that is damaged or burned out and replace with a new one of equal amperage.Note: Amperage is located on top of the fuse.
  • Close the fuse cover.
  • Using a 4 mm Allen wrench reinstall the two (2) bolts on top of the battery cover and using a Phillips screwdriver reinstall the four (4) screws that attach the battery cover.
  • Push the seat back on and using a 5 mm Allen wrench and a 10 mm wrench reinstall the two (2) Allen bolts located underneath the rear of the seat. The two (2) screws are held by 10 mm locknuts.
  • Using a 5 mm Allen wrench and a 10 mm wrench reinstall the four (4) Allen bolts that hold the fairing in place. The two (2) screws at the bottom are held by 10 mm locknuts.

SX500Required Tools: 5 mm Allen Wrench and 4 mm Allen Wrench (included)

  • Using a 5 mm Allen wrench remove the two (2) bolts from the underside of the back of the fairing.
  • Using a 4 mm Allen wrench remove the bolts located on each side of the unit and one more at the front next to the “tank.”
  • Pull the left and right leaf boards apart to remove the positioning column from the battery box and using a 4 mm Allen wrench remove the two (2) bolts from the top of the battery cover and three (3) more on each side and remove the covers.
  • Locate the three (3) fuse boxes attached to the batteries.WARNING: To prevent shock, please follow the instructions accordingly and do not skip any steps.
  • Check all three (3) fuses to see if any fuses have burned out. Remove any fuse that is damaged or burned out and replace it with a new one of equal amperage.Note: Amperage is located on top of fuse.
  • Close the fuse cover.
  • Using a 4 mm Allen wrench reinstall the two (2) bolts to the top of the battery cover and three (3) more on each side and push the left and right leaderboards together to reinstall the positioning column to the battery box and reinstall the covers.
  • Using a 4 mm Allen wrench reinstall the bolts located on each side of the unit and one more at the front next to the “tank.”
  • Using a 5 mm Allen wrench reinstall the two (2) bolts to the underside of the back of the fairing.

Replacing the Chain and TireRequired Tools: Phillips Screwdriver and Two (2) 19 mm Wrenches (included)

  • Using a Phillips screwdriver loosen screws and remove the chain guard.
  • Using two 19 mm wrenches, loosen both axle nuts.
  • Push the chain tensioner down to loosen the chain and remove the chain from the wheel sprocket and motor sprocket. Push and remove the wheel downward.Note: Your hands will get greasy doing this.
  • Install the new chain or wheel by slipping the chain around the axle. Slide the axle into the slots on the frame. Slide the chain tensioner down and maneuver the chain onto the rear sprocket and motor sprocket.
  • Reattach the chain guard. Test ride and check. Readjust as needed.

Note: the arrangement of the hardware sequence:

Spoke TensionRequired Tool: Spoke tightener (included)

  • Verify the spoke tension by shaking each spoke with your fingers. Spoke should not be loose from hub. Look for any play between where the spoke flanges attach to the hub. Try to turn the nipple using your fingers. You should not be able to spin any nipple by hand. If one or more spokes is loose, all spokes must be checked and need to be tightened with a spoke tightener.
  • Start with the spoke closest to the tire valve stem and tighten each nipple, in sequence, exactly 1/4 to 1/2 turn. A single 1/4 to 1/2 turn may not be enough to bring the spokes into proper tension. Continue tightening all spokes, no more than 1/2 turn, in sequence until all spokes are tight.Note: than a 1/2 turn each can cause the wheel to become distorted and wobbly, thus permanently damaging the wheel.

Chain and SprocketProper chain alignment must be maintained. The wheel must not be skewed. If the chain is noisy or running rough, check the lubrication, tension, and alignment of the sprockets, in that order.Battery Care and DisposalDo not store in freezing or below temperatures. To properly maintain your battery and ensure maximum battery life, carefully read the “Charging the Battery” section on page 6 of this owner’s manual.


Disposal: Your Razor product uses sealed lead-acid batteries which must be recycled or disposed of in an environmentally safe manner. Do not dispose of a lead-acid battery in a fire. The battery may explode or leak. Do not dispose of a lead-acid battery in your regular household trash. The incineration, landfilling, or mixing of sealed lead-acid batteries with household trash is prohibited by law in most areas. Return exhausted batteries to a federal or state-approved lead-acid battery recycler or a local seller of automotive batteries. If you live in Florida or Minnesota, it is prohibited by law to throw away lead-acid batteries in the municipal waste stream.
