Electric Tricycles: A Must-Read Guide on How to Ride One
An Electric Tricycle is an electric bike with three wheels for added safety and comfort. Like a traditional tricycle, one wheel is in the front, while the other two are parallel to each other in the back. This makes balancing on them much easier than bikes and scooters, while their motor makes it much easier for people to go far without over-exerting themselves.
In short: Electric Tricycles are electric bikes, but safer. Their back two wheels add an extra layer of sturdiness, while their motors help folks with limited mobility.
Getting On an Electric Tricycle
When it comes to mounting an Electric Tricycle it is going to be much easier than mounting a normal two-wheeled bike, because it’s stable. You don’t have to worry about losing your balance; it’s going to be almost like sitting in a chair.
Two things to make sure of before mounting an Electric Tricycle:
- Make sure the motor is off, or at power level 0.
- Make sure you’re on level ground so the trike’s not going to roll in any direction
Next, you’re going to want to grip the left brake and step through, then sit on the Electric Tricycle’s seat. Make sure you have a model that doesn’t have a bulky motor that might get in the way.
In short: Make sure the motor is off and you’re on level ground. Grip the left brake, step through, and mount the bike. Take your time.
Turning With an Electric Tricycle
Turning corners is easier on an Electric Tricycle, but there is something to keep in mind: Electric Tricycles are wider than two-wheel bikes. This means you’re going to need more room to turn.
Practice your turns in your neighborhood before going on a longer ride. Be aware that you’ll need more space to turn.
Also, do not “lean” into your turns as you would a normal bike: keep your weight centered over the middle of the trike. Electric Tricycles are not meant to be ridden on “edge,” and if one of the rear wheels comes off the ground, the rider is at risk of tipping over.
In short: Leave more room for turns, and practice in your neighborhood. Keep your weight centered over the middle of the Electric Tricycle.
Using the Motor
Electric Tricycles use motors in the front wheel, or rear wheels of the trike to power forward, which means an Electric Tricycle will track infinitely better when compared to a normal bike or trike. For instance: riding up a hill on a normal bike is hard. With an Electric Tricycle, it’s easy.
Simply turn on your pedal-assist or full-throttle feature, and your Electric Tricycle will have no problems with hills. Adjust the power levels and your level of pedaling in your neighborhood to get used to how fast you’d like to go before going out into the world.
In short: The motor on an Electric Tricycle makes life way easier. Take your time learning how the motor works in your neighborhood.
Safety Tips
Electric Tricycles are easier to learn how to ride than two-wheeled bikes. But when getting used to its wider base, we recommend riding down a quiet street or finding an empty parking lot to practice.
In terms of braking, you’re going to apply the same strategy used with a normal bike or trike: just grip the brakes. But because your Electric Tricycle is motorized, please give yourself more time to brake if you’re moving faster.
When you see obstacles, realize that you’re not as nimble on an Electric Tricycle as you are on a normal bike. You’re going to want to slow down and give yourself a wide berth when maneuvering.
Be aware of your larger footprint when riding. Your Electric Tricycle will take up more space when riding.- the rear wheels are likely wider than your shoulders.- so keep that in mind when riding around pedestrians or cars.
Finally: obey all cycling laws in your local jurisdiction, and wear a helmet.
In short: The motor on an Electric Tricycle makes life way easier. Take your time learning how the motor works in your neighborhood.
Electric Tricycle Benefits
Electric Tricycles are easy to learn and maintain, not requiring a license or formal training. They can be taken for rides on paved surfaces such as sidewalks, bike paths, golf courses, and parks, offering people a great way to get around and see their community.
Electric Tricycles offer freedom from traffic jams, and they’re eco-friendly because you don’t need gas. They make for a great hobby for folks who place a premium on feeling balanced, sturdy, and safe.
This is perhaps they’re greatest benefit: they’re safe for people of all abilities. Electric Tricycles offer a lot of advantages to people with certain disabilities and are great for senior citizens. Riders have to worry much less about falling off or over-exerting themselves in the face of strong headwinds, due to the balance provided by the back wheels and the added help of the motor.
There are also health benefits to cycling with an Electric Tricycle. It’s a great way for folks to stay in shape and exercise, while also staying engaged in their community. Electric tricycles provide the added advantage of being powered by an electric motor that makes it easier to climb hills and go farther than traditional bikes over long periods of time. These motors also reduce physical strain because pedaling with them doesn’t require as much effort from the rider.
What Situations are Electric Tricycles Best Suited For?
As mentioned, Electric Tricycles have three wheels: one in the front, two on the rear. This makes them significantly more stable than a bicycle.
Electric Tricycles are great for those whose ability to pedal is limited due to injuries or disabilities. It affords a great way to ride on bike paths, and if the Electric Tricycle has fat tires and the right motor, they can even be used to ride in conditions like snow or dirt paths. This means they’re perfect for people who are looking to get out more, but who want a safer ride than those provided by an electric bike or a standard bike.
A proper Electric Tricycle should have seats that can be adjusted so that you don’t have to bend over while riding them. Ergonomics are key, and for this reason, Electric Tricycles are best suited for those who value comfort in their ride.
In short: Electric Tricycles are far sturdier than bikes, electric bikes, and scooters. They provide a great way to ride on bike paths, paved surfaces, and even hills. In the case of Electric Tricycles with fat tires, they can even be used on dirt paths, beaches, and snow.
Commonly Asked Questions About Riding an Electric Tricycle
Here are the most commonly-asked questions about riding an Electric Tricycle:
How safe is the Electric Tricycle?
First and foremost, you need an Electric Tricycle that you feel secure on. That means feeling balanced, getting on and off, and being able to customize it if you have special needs (while not losing any of the Electric Tricycle’s sturdiness). Next, you need front and rear lights for safety. Finally, check to see that the Electric Tricycle has disc brakes.
How comfortable is it to mount and dismount?
Find an Electric Tricycle that’s easy to mount and dismount. Ideally, it’s one with a well placed motor and battery that makes getting on and off more comfortable. Its frame should have the rider in mind; it should have a low step through so it’s easy to step in and out.
How easy is it to set up?
From order to shipment to assembly, the process needs to be simple and safe. Look for companies that provide fast and free shipping, and that provide bikes that are mostly assembled already. If they have a white glove service option when the bike arrives, even better; someone can come help you make slight adjustments to customize the ride is key.
How easy is it to use once it’s set up?
It should take less than five minutes from the time you set up the bike to the time you’re riding. Anything more than that is too complicated.
Does the battery matter?
Yes, for a few reasons. Electric models can be powered by several types of batteries, but you want to look for one with a “Smart charger” so you don’t have to worry about over-charging it. You also want to be able to travel a long distance on a single charge.
What modes should it have?
Both full throttle and pedal-assist, so you can choose how much physical exertion you want to use.
What if I have issues with the bike after I start using it?
Look for a company that can provide service anywhere. They should be able to send someone to you to help with any simple fixes. You should also look for a company that offers a strong warranty.
In short: Know the answers to the questions above when purchasing an Electric Tricycle.

There are different types of electric tricycles depending on their intended use and design. Here are a few examples:
Cargo electric tricycles:
Cargo electric tricycles are designed specifically to transport heavy loads over shorter distances. They are popular among courier companies, delivery services, and small businesses that require a cost-effective and reliable method of transporting goods within urban areas. These tricycles typically feature a sturdy cargo compartment located at the back of the vehicle, which can carry loads of up to 500 pounds or more. They are usually equipped with powerful hub motors that provide enough torque to overcome hilly terrains and carry heavy loads without straining the battery.
In addition, they often come with features such as hydraulic brakes, adjustable seats, and suspension systems, making them comfortable and safe to ride even on bumpy roads. One of the main advantages of cargo electric tricycles is their low operating cost. They are cheaper to run and maintain than traditional delivery vehicles, and they can navigate through narrow streets and alleys that are inaccessible to larger vehicles. Cargo electric tricycles are an innovative and efficient alternative to traditional delivery vehicles, offering a greener and more cost-effective way of transporting goods within urban areas.
Semi recumbent electric tricycles:
Semi-recumbent electric tricycles are a type of electric tricycle that features a comfortable, almost-horizontal seating position, making them ideal for longer rides. They are a popular choice among seniors, individuals with physical disabilities, and anyone looking for an easier and more comfortable way to bike. Semi-recumbent electric tricycles typically come with large, comfortable seats that feature backrests and adjustable angles, allowing riders to find the perfect riding position. They also have easy-to-reach handlebars that provide a comfortable grip, as well as a footrest that allows riders to stretch out their feet. These tricycles are equipped with powerful electric motors that provide a smooth, effortless ride, even when traveling uphill or against headwinds.
They are often fitted with large, wide tires that provide excellent stability and traction, making them suitable for a wide range of terrains, including gravel paths, dirt trails, and smooth pavements. Their low-step design and stable platform make them easy to get on and off, even for people with limited mobility, and their comfortable seating position allows riders to go further and experience the joys of cycling without discomfort. Semi-recumbent electric tricycles are a great option for anyone looking for a comfortable, stable, and efficient way to ride around town or explore the great outdoors.
Tadpole electric tricycles:
Tadpole electric tricycles are a type of electric tricycle that feature two wheels in the front and one wheel in the back, giving them a tadpole shape. This design provides increased stability and maneuverability, making them popular among riders of all ages and abilities. The front wheels on tadpole electric tricycles are often equipped with independent suspension systems, which provide a smooth ride over bumpy or uneven terrain. The rear wheel is powered by an electric motor, which provides pedal-assist, meaning that the motor will help you when you pedal, making it easier to climb hills and travel longer distances. Tadpole electric tricycles are often available with a variety of features, including adjustable seats and handlebars, storage baskets, headlights, taillights, and other options that make them more convenient and comfortable to ride. One of the advantages of tadpole electric tricycles is their stability. With two wheels in the front, these tricycles are less prone to tipping over than other types of electric trikes. Additionally, the low center of gravity makes them easier to control, especially at low speeds or when turning.

Tadpole electric tricycles are an excellent option for anyone looking for a stable, comfortable, and efficient way to ride around town or explore the great outdoors. They are suitable for people of all ages and abilities, and their pedal-assist feature makes them an excellent choice for those looking for a low-impact form of exercise.
Folding electric tricycles:
Folding electric tricycles offer many of the same benefits as traditional electric tricycles, with the added convenience of being able to fold up and store or transport easily. These tricycles are a great option for those with limited storage space or for those who frequently travel with their tricycle. Folding electric tricycles typically feature a compact design, with a lightweight frame that can be easily folded and stored in a small space. Despite their smaller size, many folding electric tricycles still provide excellent stability and maneuverability, thanks to their three-wheel design. One of the benefits of folding electric tricycles is their portability. These tricycles can be easily taken on public transportation, as they can be folded up and stored in a small space. They are also easy to store in a car trunk or a small garage. Folding electric tricycles often feature a range of features that make them comfortable and convenient to ride. They offer a stable and efficient way to get around town or explore the outdoors, with the added bonus of being easy to store and transport.
Delta electric tricycles:
Delta electric tricycles are a specific type of electric tricycle that features a delta or tadpole configuration. This means that the two wheels are located at the rear of the tricycle, with a single front wheel that provides steering. Delta electric tricycles are known for their stability and maneuverability, especially when it comes to turning corners. The rear wheels are spaced wider apart than on traditional electric tricycles with a single rear wheel, which provides greater stability and balance.

The front wheel contributes to steering, allowing riders to make tight turns with ease. Delta electric tricycles are also known for their power and efficiency. They often come with a powerful motor and battery that can provide a longer range than other types of electric tricycles. Some models also feature pedal-assist technology, which combines electric power with manual pedaling to provide an even greater range. Some other features of Delta electric tricycles might include adjustable seats and handlebars for increased comfort, storage baskets or racks for carrying groceries or other items, and lights for increased safety during nighttime riding.

Riding E-Bikes With Action Sport Legends
Grabbing all the E-bikes, we took off as a group. It was so awesome to see everyone riding together. Riding up trails that would normally take hours only took a fraction of the time on E-bikes. Riding down we found so many awesome little hits and jumps. Travis Pastrana wanted to do a backflip and followed me into a jump he had never hit before. His backflip ended up missing my head by only three feet, but somehow he landed it. Typical Travis.
Gran Fondo On An E-Bike
“ Gran Fondo organizers are welcoming E-bikes to their events, and I was curious to see what the experience would be like – especially on this daunting course with more than 9,000 feet of climbing. Would it be super easy with the help of pedal assist? importantly, how would participants manage battery life?”
Customer Reviews
TOO MUCH FUN
“The ultimate outdoor experience. The pedal assist is very intuitive. I even forgot to notice it after the first few minutes. I put it on a medium setting and just enjoyed the trail. I was surprised at how well the bike handles technical terrain as well as sharp turns where I thought the extra weight would be a factor. I think the bigger tires and extra weight actually contribute to a more planted feel on the trail. Fun no matter what skill level!” – Brad from Texas on the Trance E 1 Pro
FANTASTIC BIKE
“I do use it nearly every day for commutes, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ve put a fair amount of mileage on the bike, so I feel like I have a good grip on things. The motor’s torque is great, and really makes accelerating fun. Honestly, I feel like I would be completely comfortable with more speed, but 28 mph is as good as it gets for road legal e-bikes. The bike just feels solid, and having the powerful motor allows me to get to my destinations without getting sweaty.” – CG from Greensboro, North Carolina reviews the Fastroad E EX Pro.
AWESOME. IN JUST ABOUT EVERY WAY
“Great handling and performance from a ride standpoint. Descents exceeding 40 mph on paved roads were completed without concern and was extremely stable. no shimming or issues with cornering. On gravel the 45c tires and frame absorbed bumps and rough surfaces, resulting in a smooth ride. The greatest feature was the pedal assistance provided by the SyncDrive motor which offered as much assist as you need.”—Chuck from Red Wing, Minnesota reviews the Revolt E Pro

You also enjoy stability due to the three-wheel design, reducing the risk for falls and serious injuries because the trike is lower to the ground than an upright bicycle.
However, if you’re looking for the ultimate recumbent trike experience, it might be time to invest in an electric-assist recumbent trike. You enjoy all the benefits of your recumbent trike, but with the boost of an electric motor when you need it. Here we explain why you should get an electric-assist recumbent trike to improve your cycling experience.
You’ll Still Benefit From Exercise
Some people are hesitant to invest in electric trikes with the worry they’ll miss out on all that exercise. However, Brigham Young University published research findings that showed electric bikes offer almost the same level of exercise as those riding mountain bikes. The bonus is that despite getting exercise, people find they feel better than they would following a workout.
Riders’ hearts work at over 90% of the rate of traditional bikes without feeling like they’ve worked as hard. According to a study by BikeRadar, champ Tom Bell hit close to his maximum heart rate when riding his favorite off-road test loop on an electric bike. If you use your recumbent trike to get to work, studies show an electric hybrid bike averaged 89% of the mean beats per minute compared to riding on a traditional bike.
Electric recumbent trikes still require pedaling so you still get the benefits of a cardiovascular workout. while also helping to build muscles and endurance. As with any bike, you strengthen muscles and improve the efficiency of your cardiovascular system, keeping you fit to enjoy other types of physical activity.
Higher Speed, Less Effort
Electric bikes allow you to push as hard as you like, reach higher speeds and climb higher faster all with less effort. So, if you love a challenging trail, the electric recumbent trike makes it easier to travel the routes choosing when you wish to use electric-assist or back off. This allows you to ride at your own pace and your own level of effort. In fact, you can take your average speed of 10 to 12mph, up to 20mph with your electric trike. If you love hills but hate how they slow you down, you can avoid drops in speed with an electric trike. The motor kicks in to help you keep up your momentum even on the most challenging hills.
Less Stress on Your Body
Because the pedal-assist electric feature helps with the strain and effort required, you also will manage hills, inclines, and rough terrain more easily. As a result, you put less stress on your body, particularly the joints and heart. So, while you enjoy the benefits of muscle strength and a good cardio workout, you do so without the strain that can lead to injury and stress experienced on a regular bike. You need less recovery time, which makes it ideal if you’re just getting started on exercising more often.
Good for Everyone
Cycling is fun, making it appealing to people of all ages looking to lead more active lifestyles. However, despite the saying, it’s just like riding a bike, you might be surprised how difficult it can be to get into the swing of cycling. If you aren’t used to physical activity, you are likely to experience aches and pains even after cycling just a short distance.
This can put you off physical activity, so your bike ends up collecting dust. However, an electric-assist recumbent trike makes it easier for people of all activity levels to ease into cycling without feeling overly exhausted and achy. The electric-assist allows you to ease into cycling, while the recumbent positioning puts less strain on your body. You can get used to using the muscles required to ride a bike. In fact, e-bikes are an excellent choice for those with mobility issues or mild disabilities.
Improve Your State of Mind
An electric 3-wheel bike provides an easy way to get outdoors and avoid living a sedentary life. Enjoying nature, even if it is just at your local park, helps reduce stress levels and improve mood. Fresh air and reduced stress also help you enjoy healthier sleep. For those who might feel left out when friends and family are out and about, you can become more social and join in the fun with an electric adult tricycle. You can ride with groups of younger, fitter people without getting left behind with your electric assist for a more social form of exercise that makes you feel part of the community.
Faster and Further
Not to dwell too much on speed and distance, but if these things are considerations to your cycling habits, data from European cities showed e-bike riders took longer trips. So again, you balance out any slight losses in physical gains by traveling farther. You can also go further in less time because you have that added speed from your motor. Imagine being able to reach those trails further from home whether you’re looking for a flat, smooth ride, or more challenging climbs in the hills out yonder. Suddenly new opportunities open up offering more options for your cycling outings. Instead of having to load your trike into the car, if you can even manage that, you can ride all the way there and back.
Safer for City Cycling
If you do all your cycling in the city, the electric assist motor is the urbanite’s best friend. You will find it’s easier to speed up from a standstill, so you can keep up with traffic when starting up after stops at lights, junctions and stop signs. This reduces stress while also keeping you safer when cycling on busy city streets. As a bonus, you also find parking a lot easier than traveling by car in the city. With rising gas prices, it’s also cheaper than a car.
Electric recumbent trikes allow you to enjoy longer rides and extend your workout time. It takes less effort than riding a normal bike so you can go further faster and can conquer rough terrain, hills and distances for the ultimate recumbent trike experience.
