Learn how to assemble your Segway-Ninebot ES2 in 20 minutes
You have just bought your first Segway-Ninebot ES2 e-scooter (that’s both UL2272-certified LTA-approved), and it is delivered to your doorstep in a shiny new packaging.
Congratulations on making the first step!
Now, for the harder part. Firstly, you have to now assemble your e-scooter on your own before riding it. For those who are afraid that they are going to mess things up, don’t be.
We have created a fuss-free and simple guide to bring you through this installation and activation process. In fact, it is not as complicated as it seems:
First and foremost, check that you received these items.
The first tip for any DIY/installation project is to check through all the inventory and make sure you got all the things you need.
For the ES2, these are the items you should be getting in your box:
A word of caution: try not to scratch anything when you take everything out of the box.
Unfold your Segway-Ninebot ES2
Release the e-scooter stem by pushing on the rear guard. To fully unfold, push the stem all the way up until you hear a ‘click’ sound. This indicates that your ES2 is fully unfolded. To make it stand on its own, push down the kickstand.
Connect the handlebar to the top of the Segway-Ninebot ES2 stem
Take out the tab from the top of the ES2 main frame. After which, look into the interior of the stem and you should see a blue-tipped black wire. Next, pick up the escooter handlebar – there’s a blue-tipped black wire inside as well.
Connect both wire ends together. Also, make sure that the arrows on the wires align. Next, insert the handlebar into the top of the ES2 stem. Also, make sure that the orientation is correct (the ES2’s front light should be facing away from the escooter.)
Tighten the handlebar with screws
For this step, you’ll need four screws (find them in the small translucent plastic bag) and a hex wrench.
Attach the screws into the ES2 mainframe below the handlebar on both sides. At this stage, make sure that you only partially tighten the screws.
Once all four screws are inserted and partially tightened, you can now tighten all the screws to totally secure them.
Congrats – you now have a fully assembled escooter!
Part 2: Activation of the Segway-Ninebot ES2 Escooter
Before you start anything, prepare these items for the electric scooter activation to go smoothly:
Download the Segway-Ninebot ES2 app on your phone
The Segway-Ninebot app allows you to configure your ES2. It also has other uses such as controlling its speed. And also changing the light colour under the foot deck.
The application is in the Google Play store and the Apple App store. It is free for download.
Power on the ES2
When you switch on your ES2 for the very first time, it should have a constant beeping sound. Don’t worry, this doesn’t indicate that there’s anything wrong with your escooter.
Link your Segway-Ninebot ES2 to the Segway-Ninebot app
Ensure that your bluetooth connection is turned on. Next, go to your Segway-Ninebot app and find your ES2 in the application. Click it and do a firmware update.
Next, enter your email address and activate your ES2.
With that, your e-scooter is successfully linked to your app!

#1. Replacing the Control Board
You can replace the control board with one that is functional. There are two options here; replacing with a new or old control board.
Replacing it with a new board comes at a premium cost. The cost of purchase, the labor cost, and every other thing involved is the reason why many tend to shy away from this option.
Another fact to consider is that the new control board can also develop faults in weeks.
This realization makes the option a risky choice. You can also replace it with a fixed old control board.

#2. Fixing the Motherboard
If you have the knowledge of micro-soldering, or you know an expert that can help out, then you can explore this option.
The area that needs soldering on the board is just about 1mm wide. Hence if one does not know, it is impossible to fix this at home.
Ninebot ES2 Charging Problems
Another problem that is common with this Ninebot ES2 is changing issues. After a long ride during the day, you need to recharge the battery.
You might realize that the scooter does not charge after connecting the charger.
Without the battery charged, there is no power to operate the ride. The charging problem is another issue that is common with Ninebot ES2.
A faulty charger can also be the reason for this problem. In some cases, the failure of the charging component of the Main Board in the scooter is the reason for charging issues.
The issue is often a result of a faulty charging connection or bad charging unit.
#1. Possible fixes for charging problems
The first step is to check out the charging unit and ensure it is working perfectly. It works fine if the charging maintains the green light when connected to a power source.
Another common fix is to check the charger port on the scooter to see if it is working well.
There are charging connectors available for sale to test the charger port. If these are not the issue, then the charging component on the motherboard is the final check.
The fix here is to replace the board with a new one or find a suitable replacement.
Ninebot ES2 Light Problem
Next on the list of common problems that NInebot ES2 often face is the issue with light.
There are two major light problems. Sometimes, the brake and headlights do not come on when using the bike.
Another common problem happens when you turn on the headlights. The brake lights come on, and the Kick scooter stops running.
The cruise control beep also comes on in this situation. The latter problem is more common than the formal.
In rare cases, switching on the light also causes the battery to drain quickly. In these cases, the scooter is unable to run uphill.
#1. Possible fix to the light problem
If both lights are not coming on at all, you might want to check the wiring of the lights. Flip the scooter over and check the harness under a cover on the floor side of the scooter.
You can also trace the wire from the harness to the controller to ensure no damage.
Sometimes, when folding the scooter at home, the sharp edges might cut off the wire connecting the lights to the battery.
Trace the wire to ascertain if this is the issue with your Segway ES2. If that is the issue, carrying the wire to an expert will be a fast option.
You can contact the manufacturer for repair options if you are still within the warranty period.
If the issue with your scooter is the latter issue of brake lights coming on when the headlight is on, then there is a solution.
It will involve some screwdrivers and a little bit of manual repair. However, this repair also involves removing the control board and doing a bit of micro-soldering.
If you know your way around with a soldering rod, you need to bridge the compartment that controls the light. That should fix the problem nicely.
Here are the steps to removing the control board on Ninebot ES2:
- Unscrew the upper part of the controller and disconnect the cable leading to the handle
- Also, release the lower part of the controller and disconnect the five cables leading to the scooter base.
- Remove the controller and unscrew the side screws and remove the plastic cover.
- Remove the screw that connects the control board.
- Use a plier to turn the cover inside the controller anticlockwise and remove the cover. This turning will allow you to remove the control board and the battery.
- Remove the screws that hold the control board case and reveal the inner content.
- Disconnect the battery cable from the board, and the board is accessible for inspection.
Ninebot ES2 Battery Problem
Ninebot ES2 has an option for both external and internal batteries. However, most issues arise with the internal battery.
Sometimes, the battery has a charge but doesn’t power the scooter. It shows on the app that the battery holds a charge but does not power anything.

Sometimes, you try to change direction by steering the handle, but it’s too stiff to move.

In our performance tests, the Segway Ninebot ES2 reached a top speed of about 15 miles per hour, which falls short of many other similar Segway models like the newer Ninebot ES4 or the long-range Ninebot MAX.
The acceleration is equally, if not more, disappointing than the maximum speed on this scooter.
The Segway Ninebot ES2 takes approximately 7.1 seconds to go from 0 to 16 mph. This is much slower than the competition and even some of the more affordable models on the market.
The motor offers a considerable 300 watts but clearly doesn’t generate much in terms of speed or acceleration. On the other hand, the motor is nearly silent, which is a perk for anyone who wants minimal noise throughout the course of their next scooter ride.

Unfortunately, for those seeking a durable battery with long-lasting power, the Segway Ninebot ES2 falls short once again, offering no more than about 187 watt-hours of battery capacity. The poor battery capacity contributes to this insufficient range, which is nearly five miles shorter than most comparable e-scooter models.

The MAX model takes the lackluster elements of the ES2 and improves them immensely. The 40.4-mile range on this scooter and a top speed of 18.6 mph immediately set it above the ES2 purely in commuting capabilities.
Additionally, the ride has a longer battery life with a built-in charger for charging while on the go.
While the scooter is heavier than other models like the ES2, it offers much better suspension, allowing riders to cruise over almost any type of terrain.
Both choices are improvements over the ES2, which falls short in terms of features. However, they are both more expensive than the ES2 given their higher quality and performance capabilities.
