KBO Ranger Cargo Electric Bike Review

The KBO Ranger Cargo Electric Bike is one of the newest product releases from the KBO brand. Somehow and after we took it for a test, it became apparent that it competes head to head with some of the best cargo bikes from Tern and Rad Power Bikes.

Everything from the portable and lightweight frame to the generous payload capacity makes it a new and exciting choice for riders who want a little more at an affordable price. There are a few reasons why this e-bike is even a top contender in the first place.

Price, speed, portability, and stellar performance are just some of them. If you’re still wondering what all the rave is about, let’s explore some of the prominent details about the KBO Ranger Cargo Electric Bike.

Main Features of the KBO Ranger Cargo Electric Bike

Motor and Power

If you’re looking for an electric cargo bike that ticks the boxes on power and capacity, then the KBO Ranger Electric Bike may be the right pick. It comes with a high-performance 750W motor that’s supposed to make both hilly and level-grounded rides hassle-free.

Additionally, the 840Wh LG battery does power this e-bike for a generous amount of time after a full, single charge.

Range

Thanks to the geared hub 750W motor and long-lasting battery, riders may be able to enjoy up to 60 miles on the road without the need for a battery change.

This means you can ride to work, stop over and visit friends/relatives, and maybe even drive by for some quick take-out before heading home. The KBO Ranger also qualifies as a Class 3 electric bike since it can achieve speeds beyond 20 mph

In throttle-only mode, and according to our test outcomes, this e-bike can achieve up to 23 mph, even though you may be prohibited from doing so in some parts of the US.

Speed

Not all electric bikes feature a throttle and a pedal assist. Some either have one or the other. This is one of the features that put the KBO Ranger on the radar of riders who love more control when riding.

With just a press of a button, the throttle helps propel the electric bike forward. This allows riders to stop pedaling for a while and just enjoy the ride. However, pedal-assist will only kick in when you’re pedaling.

There are five levels of pedal assist to enjoy with the KBO Ranger. However, if you ever feel the need to relax a little, the twist-throttle will provide you with on-demand power.

You’ll also be able to hit speed ranges between 20 and 23 mph depending on the terrain.

Weight Limit and Net Weight

One of the greatest selling points of the KBO Ranger is its rear rack and 400lbs payload capacity. It’s a big deal since not all cargo e-bikes offer such a generous space allowance. Except you’re trying to fit a truck-load amount of cargo on an e-bike, the bike should be suitable for your needs.

This allows a good amount of cargo, or maybe one or two passengers to ride along with. In total, the sturdy aluminum rack can hold up to 120 pounds in weight. For a bike that weighs 77 lbs, you may want to admit, that’s pretty awesome.

Design and Engineering

An e-bike could have everything and still lack the very basics. One of the most crucial essentials is quality build made with durable materials. Everything from the large aluminum rear rack suggests a durable design.

Plus, the rack comes tastefully finished with a wooden top that also looks pretty solid. There’s also the rust-resistant dual center stands equally made of aluminum alloy.

You may agree that aluminum is currently the top choice when it comes to durable reinforcement and long-lasting parts.

Beyond the Smart frame/component engineering, there’s also an ‘intelligent mounting bracket’ that easily supports up to 50lbs in weight. Plus, the rear and front fenders keep the dirt and other elements at bay.

Main Features:

Warranty Shipping

This is one area where major brands can either win or miss it. For the KBO Ranger, the brand offers free shipping to all the States in the US excluding Hawaii and Alaska. However, any shipment to Canada will attract a 150 fee.

At least that amount is cushioned with a 2-year warranty, which may not sound that generous to most people accustomed to how electrical products work. If it helps, there’s also a 14-day return policy in case you are not satisfied with the workings of the electric cargo bike.

Other Facts About The KBO Ranger Cargo Electric Bike. You

Known Issues and Downsides

There’s practically no product without even the littlest downside. The KBO Ranger is not exempt from that fact at all. One thing we noticed after assembling the electric cargo bike was the weight of this beast.

It’s not the lightest electric bike out there, which may be a challenge for smaller riders or anyone who doesn’t fancy that extra stress. What we also noticed was the full dose of power once the motor comes on.

We kind a wished there was a power-control button, similar to the five levels of pedal assist. Another issue we slightly disappointed about is the front mechanical disc brakes. Plus, they can be somewhat noisy, especially when climbing up steep hills.

KBO Ranger vs Other Similar Products

The KBO can undoubtedly sit in the league of top electric cargo bikes like the RadWagon and Tern GSD. However, the KBO Ranger is a bit more compact than the RadWagon.

The KBO Ranger’s 69” frame isn’t as long as the RadWagon’s 78.7” frame. This makes it easier to maneuver through tight corners. The puncture-resistant tires are also wider than most commuter e-bike tires.

This improves stability and ensures a smoother ride. At least this was the experience during our testing. The Tern was another tough contender, but the price tag is one of the factors that make the KBO Ranger a preferred choice.

Just like the Tern GSD, the KBO Ranger Cargo Electric Bike sits a bit low to accommodate shorter riders. Both of them are relatively the same size, the former is just more high-end and has more fancy features.

Plus, the Tern sports a mid-drive motor, which seems like the better choice for those that desire maximal performance and greater torques.

However, with the 750W geared hub motor, the Ranger can still make decent climbs and packs a good amount of power for a smooth ride on different terrains.

Who Should Buy The KBO Ranger?

Who Is This Product for?

The KBO Ranger Cargo Electric Bike is not just a suitable option for riders who need extra space for easy hauling. It’s also one of the few affordable options on the market. Plus, so far, it’s safe to say it’s also a budget-friendly choice for its class that delivers on quality as well.

So, for riders who need an e-cargo bike that allows up to 400lbs, with good mileage and a powerful motor, this may be an excellent choice.

Who Is This Product Not for?

Thanks to that generous 400lbs rear rack, the KBO Ranger is considerably heavy at 77lbs. It’s also not the most portable on the market because of the purpose it serves. So, if you’re big on compact and light e-bikes, it may not be the best decision to purchase the Ranger.

Plus, if you are into more high-end e-cargo bikes with silent motors and excellent climbing ability, the Ranger may not deliver on all those requirements.

Its main deliverables are the generous rear rack, relatively promising speed levels, and the long battery life that allows long and enjoyable commutes.

  • All-terrain ebikes
  • Cruiser electric bikes
  • Commuters
  • City bike
  • Folding e-bikes
  • and a cargo e-bike.

KBO Electric Bikes Reviews

KBO has a wide range of different types of electric bikes in its selection. Everyone should find something.

Let’s take a brief look at each KBO electric bike.

KBO Tornado – All-Terrain Electric Bike

KBO Tornado is an all-terrain electric bike that is suitable for all kinds of activities. You can just commute with it to work or school or ride it in the forest trails as training.

The Tornado comes with a 750W rear hub motor, which provides a top speed of up to 25 mph. If you are tired and don’t want to pedal at all, you can use a half-twist throttle. Then the top speed is 20 mph.

The e-bike has a quality battery with Samsung or LG cells. It contains 672 Wh of energy capacity, which will provide up to 45 miles of range.

Additionally, the bike has all the necessary accessories like full fenders, a rear rack, and a front light. Also, the bike has both step-over and step-thru frames in selection.

KBO Oasis – Cruiser Electric Bike

KBO is always looking for ways to bring new and interesting models to the market. One of the recent launches is KBO Oasis cruiser electric bike.

One of the most spectacular features of this bike is its look. The frame of the Oasis is inspired by an old-school beach cruiser bicycle. However, while cruiser bikes were usually with single-speed drivetrains, the Oasis is equipped with Shimano 7-speed derailleur.

And of course, the bike also has a 500W motor, which lies in the rear hub. The battery is hidden in the frame but it’s still removable. So you can take the battery with you and charge it in your room.

The bike is meant to ride in urban environments and therefore, it doesn’t have a suspension system. However, the tires are quite wide, so some occasional bumps on the road won’t be an issue.

KBO Breeze – Commuter e-Bike

KBO Breeze is one of the first e-bikes the company built. But it’s still a really popular model and has gathered lots of good feedback from its owners.

It’s a commuter bike and comes with 2 different frame styles. People can choose between step-over and step-thru frames depending on their personal preferences.

The Breeze comes with a 500W rear-hub motor. However, the peak power of the motor is 750W. The motor is capable to climb up steep inclines even if the rider weighs over 200 pounds.

The battery of the bike can contain 768Wh of energy, which allows you to ride up to 55 miles. There is also a quick charger included, which makes the battery full within 5 hours.

KBO Hurricane 2.0 – City e-Bike

The Hurricane is a lightweight city commuter. It’s one of those electric bikes that doesn’t even look like one. The battery is hidden in the frame and the motor is quiet.

As the “2.0” in the name suggests, it’s already a second generation of this e-bike. While the first-gen model was a belt-drive e-bike, the 2.0 is a chain drive. Also, the 2.0 has a bigger battery and a more powerful motor.

Talking about the motor, it’s located in the rear hub and has 350W of power. However, the peak power is 500W. Unlike other KBO ebikes, the Hurricane doesn’t have a throttle.

The battery of the Hurricane is built by Panasonic and it can provide up to 45 miles of range. Light weight, 700C road tires, and sleek design definitely contribute to good mileage.

One of the best features of this bike is its price. You rarely find such quality at a price this low.

KBO Flip – Affordable Folding e-Bike

KBO Flip was the company’s first folding electric bike. It is built with practicality in mind.

One of the best features of the bike is you can fold the frame in half, collapse the handlebar stem and easily fit it in places where no other bike will fit. For example, you can put the bike in the trunk of the car and take it on your next trip. Or if you live in a small apartment, you can store the e-bike in the closet when not riding.

Besides practicality, the bike has solid performance too. It comes with a 500W motor and a comfortable throttle, so you could ride the e-bike without pedaling. The 15.6Ah battery provides up to 30 miles of range in pure electric mode. On pedal-assistance mode, you can ride as far as up to 55 miles on a single charge.

KBO Compact – Foldable Electric Bike

Although the company already had a folding e-bike, they decided to manufacture another one – KBO Compact. Actually, it’s an improved version of the KBO Flip.

First of all, the Compact has a 48V battery instead of the 36V on the Flip. Also, the Compact has a 750W motor instead of a 500W motor on the KBO Flip. It means, the KBO Compact has better acceleration and is capable to climb steeper hills. Also, more power comes in handy, when you need to carry more cargo.

Another difference you probably noticed is the frame design. The KBO Compact has a low-step-through frame, which is much easier for the riders to get on and off the bike.

KBO Ranger – Electric Cargo Bike

Although recently mentioned folding bikes provide some cargo capacity, they are not quite cargo e-bikes. But no worries, KBO has a true cargo e-bike in its lineup too. It’s called KBO Ranger.

It’s a perfect ebike to haul kids or pick up groceries. The bike has a payload capacity of 400 pounds. The base model has a long rear rack. However, if you need more cargo space, there are lots of baskets and bags you can attach to this bike.

Since the bike is meant for carrying heavy loads, it must have a strong motor and battery. It has a 750W rear hub motor, which is capable to handle all the weight. Also, the LG battery has 840Wh of energy capacity, which is enough for a 60-mile range.

KBO Ranger Components

KBO didn’t skimp when it came to other components either (view the full specs). The KBO Ranger has a Shimano thumb shifter paired with a Shimano Altus rear derailleur. Mechanical disc brakes with 180 mm rotors will provide plenty of stopping power.

It also comes with a double kickstand, front and rear integrated lights, a right-hand twist-grip throttle, bright LCD screen, and fenders. While there is no front suspension, the wider tires will provide some shock absorption with lower pressure.

KBO Ranger Accessories

KBO has also released a variety of accessories to accompany the KBO Ranger. This includes the front rack (69), front basket (89), running boards (99), and a “fence” to protect your passengers. The KBO Ranger rear rack (129) is included in the purchase along with a multi-tool. For more suggestions on outfitting whatever ebike you decide to purchase check out our ebike accessories list.

Our Take

On paper, the KBO Ranger looks like a tremendous value if you’re looking for a cargo ebike. Most cargo ebikes like the Rad Power Bikes RadWagon start near 2000. And cargo ebike can go up from there reaching several thousands of dollars.

KBO has a short but successful track record to date which should give ebike shoppers some peace of mind when purchasing. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the KBO Ranger and will report back if complete a full video KBO Ranger review. Check out the full details on the KBO Ranger.
