Hiboy S2 Max: A Budget Scooter that MAX-imizes ride quality!

The S2 Max from Hiboy is priced at 899 US (often discounted) and is advertised to cover up to 40 miles… which on an electric scooter is enough for just about anyone. Hiboy notes that this scooter is an upgrade to their best selling S2 lineup, and after reviewing both the S2 and S2 Lite, I wholeheartedly agree.

While my range results were not as advertised the ride refinement, dead quiet motor, spacious deck, and nice ride makes this electric scooter one to consider.

Specifications

The Hiboy S2 Max is a commuter oriented electric scooter with 48 volts and 11.6 amp hours of battery capacity. A 500 watt hub motor in the rear allows for electronic braking along with a front drum brake. There is NO suspension on this scooter, but the 10-inch tubeless tires help with comfort plus you get that extra durability from a tubeless tire which is great at this price point.

The 10×2.5” tubeless tires promise durability and really help smooth out the ride!

Display

A color display with 5 bar color battery indicator operated by single button or the Hiboy App. A single button press turns the integrated from and rear light off and on, two presses switches between the 3 speeds modes. Three presses turns cruise control on or off. There is a real time current and regenerative brake indicator showing power in and out of the battery. Cruise control engages and disengages with an audible beep, huge plus in my book. The tail light has flashing brake light functionality.

S2 Max says “FU” when the battery is full!

Folding

Like other Hiboy scooters, there is a very simple, but solid, folding mechanism. You just pull up on the clamp, the stem collapses down, and then you clip into the rear fender. When unfolding the latch snaps into place solidly. It has a very solid stem with pretty much no movement in it at all.

How it Rides!

The S2 Max’s throttle feel is excellent. It is set to kick start mode by default but it can be changed to live from a stop in the App. The brake application is nice and if you feather the brake lever you can feel a small amount of electronic braking and regeneration to the battery. I did notice under very hard braking the rear tire can come up slightly with the front drum brake.

The speeds I observed in each speed modes are as follows:

Eco ~ 11mphD ~ 14.5 mphSport ~ 17.6 mph

The display would show 19 or 20 mph as the top speed, as you can see below that equaled an actual top speed of a little under 18 mph.

Performance

Acceleration feels quite brisk and the 500 watt motor is buttery smooth. The motor has a very pleasant amount of pull and there was very little struggle on the hill climb test.

Surprises

The ride quality and smooth pull from the motor while remaining nearly silent.

Disappointments

Not many for the price. The display button pad can be difficult to operate at a stop and borderline dangerous to try and change speed modes when riding. The top speed lags behind other 48-volt scooters.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed the S2 Max, it is a very simple to use electric scooter with good performance and range. The feel is good from the handlebar grips right down to the deck. The power comes on very smooth and very quietly.

The advertised range is very optimistic but is still well within what you would expect for the amount of battery and motor power. The S2 Max electric scooter competes well with other 48-volt E-scooters on the market. This is the best scooter I have reviewed, to date, from Hiboy.

The speed is perfect, not dangerously fast and there are 3 speed modes. We got to the park in the late afternoon/dusk and the front light works very well. I have taken them all over our local trail system and we have gone more than 10 miles with 3/4 of the power still remaining. They handled well even through a few minor crashes. no damage to the scooter or my kids. We have only had them around a month now but they have been great so far. Delivery Terms

  • Most deliveries occur between 8AM and 8PM and, if signature is required, must be signed for.
  • You can cancel your order before the package has shipped. However, you need to pay an extra 50. 80 shipping fee for canceling your order if the package has been shipped out.
  • If delivery fails due to the customer’s wrong shipping address, the customer needs to pay an extra 50. 80.
  • Refused packages (except items damaged during transit) will be charged a 10% restocking fee.

Damaged Items

Although we take every reasonable precaution to ensure that our products are well packaged, damage may still occur during shipment from our warehouse to your destination. If your product is damaged in transit, please notify us and the shipping company immediately. Freight-related damage must be reported to the freight company and to us within 7 days of receipt of the shipment. Take pictures of the damage and ask the shipping company for a confirmation or claim number. You can send an e-mail to support@electricrideco.com. Do not throw away the original packaging.

  • As soon as you place your order, you will receive an order confirmation e-mail. This means that we have received your order in our system and pre-authorized your credit card for the purchase.
  • As soon as we receive your order, we automatically reach out to our suppliers to confirm that it is in stock and available for immediate shipment.
  • If your item is on backorder or unavailable, we will reach out to you via e-mail.
  • If your item(s) are available for immediate shipment (within 5 business days), we will process the charges and submit the order for shipment.

Order Shipment

Damages

Please inspect the packaging of your item(s) when they arrive, if you notice any damage you should make note of it when signing for delivery and take photos. If your item(s) do arrive damaged, please send photos to support@electricrideco.com and we will process an insurance claim on your behalf.

Freight LTL Shipments

  • Note: Only applies to certain products such as large scooters.
  • When the item reaches your city or a city near yours the dispatcher will call you to set up a future delivery date and time with you. The item will not be delivered until you set up this appointment.
  • You need to be at the delivery address during the delivery window to receive and sign for the item.
  • The dispatcher will let you know what dates they have available. Delivery appointments can only be scheduled Monday to Friday. The delivery times can only be scheduled in delivery Windows of 8am. 12pm or 12pm. 4pm. Depending on the freight company the delivery window may differ. A fixed delivery time, i.e. 9am, cannot be scheduled. It can only be scheduled in a delivery window time frame.
  • Please make sure the phone number you entered at checkout is a good number to contact you at.
  • Don’t screen your calls until your item has been delivered.
  • The item will be delivered via a lift gate truck with one delivery person. It will be placed at your door or the closet area near your door. Due to the large size, it may not be possible to be placed at your door.
  • Be sure to keep all your packing materials including the pallet. If you decide to return the item you will need to have all the original packing materials.

How to Handle Damages, Exceptions or Discrepancies at Time of Product Delivery

  • IMPORTANT: If contents cannot be inspected immediately, notation on carrier’s paperwork must state: “Carton damage, subject to inspection” and list type of damage.
  • Contents must be inspected within 48 hours of arrival and actual damage reported to the carrier.

For a majority of our products, our return policy varies between 7 to 30 days depending on the brand of the item you order. Each manufacturer has its own policies and we have to abide by the manufacturer’s return and refund policies as we are an authorized dealer for the brands we distribute. Hiboy Return Policy

At Hiboy, customer satisfaction is always our top priority. Our dedicated Quality Control and Quality Assurance Teams will inspect your items prior to shipping.

30-Days Return Period: Any new / undamaged / unused product purchased from Hiboy may be returned for up to 30 days after the original delivery date.

Up to 12-month warranty: We offer 12 months for the scooter and 6 months for the battery and motor. We take care of quality-related issues with REPLACEMENT PARTS.

Lifetime Technical Support: If you have any questions about your purchase, please feel free to reach us directly and we will gladly assist you!

RETURNS

If you are unsatisfied with your purchase, Hiboy’s return policy allows you to return the product purchased on the Authorization channel within 30 days counting from the date of receipt of delivery.

Please contact us at support@electricrideco.com for return address or return label. The customer is responsible for the return shipping cost of the package and it must be returned by the customer.

Once the returned item arrives back in Hiboy‘s warehouse for inspection, the refund or exchange process will begin.

All accessories and spare scooter parts (including seats) can not be returned.​

Refunds for delivery costs

About refund difference price

Electric Ride Co. Return Terms

  • To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it, unused and in its original packaging.
  • Returns may be requested by sending an email to support@electricrideco.com with your order number.
  • If your return is accepted, we’ll send you instructions on how and where to send your package.
  • Items sent back to us without first requesting a return will not be accepted.
  • We do not charge restocking fees, but if our supplier does, this fee will be passed on to you. Supplier restocking fees vary from zero to 30% and can be viewed on the product page.
  • If the return is for personal reasons, a 5% fee will be charged to cover our administration costs and merchant processing fees.
  • If your order has shipped, you will be responsible for actual return shipping charges.
  • Original shipping charges included in the purchase price of the product are non-refundable.
  • We will refund the product price minus the applicable fees and charges.
  • Refunds will be credited to the same payment method used when the original purchase was made.

Additional Information

  • It is the customer’s responsibility to return the merchandise in a new resalable condition. Refunds are only issued after returned items have been received and inspected.
  • If a returned item gets damaged during the transportation, it is the customer’s responsibility to file the claim with the carrier. No refund can be issued in this case.
  • Once your return is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned item. We will also notify you of the approval or rejection of your refund.
  • If you are approved, then your refund will be processed, and a credit will be automatically applied to the original method of payment.

Cancellations

  • All cancelled orders are subject to a 5% cancellation fee.
  • This fee covers administration costs and costs from our credit card processing company. Whenever we refund an order, we are not refunded our merchant card processing fees.
  • If your order has not been shipped yet, this is the only fee you will incur.
  • If your order has been shipped, the standard return procedure applies and more fees will apply like original shipping costs, return shipping costs, and restocking fees if any. We do not charge restocking fees, we only pass them on from our supplier.

Damages

Defective Merchandise

We do not offer exchanges. If you’d like a different item (different size / color / model, etc.) you will need to cancel or return the initial order and place a new order.

12 Month Warranty

All Hiboy products are covered under our manufacturer’s 1-year all-inclusive warranty for the original owner against all manufacturing defects (The warranty period of accessories is separately stipulated).

For most of the parts, it is a 12-month warranty. For some components like the motor and battery, it is a 6-month warranty.

Warranty Target Audience

  • All quality-related defects on items sold directly by Hiboy or Hiboy’s authorized resellers are covered by an extensive warranty.
  • Quality-related warranty claims on purchases made through Hiboy’s authorized distributors and retailers, such as Walmart and Amazon, are handled through Hiboy.

Batteries

Hiboy provides a 6-month prorated warranty for batteries.

  • During first 6-months of service – A defective battery will be repaired or replaced at no cost to the customer. The warranty period for a repaired or replaced battery or motor remains unchanged based on the original purchase date.
  • After the first 6-Months of service – Hiboy offers discounts for customers to buy new batteries.Batteries purchased will have a new 6-Month warranty based on the purchase date.
  • No cash reimbursement will be made.
  • Batteries can be assessed and found defective directly by Hiboy.

This Limited Warranty does not cover

  • Warranty service will not be honored if the damage is caused by a human.
  • Warranty service will be honored if the damage is not caused by a human.

Claims Process

All claims to this warranty must be submitted to us.support@hiboy.com. Proof of purchase and photos or videos of the damaged product are required with any warranty request. Before making a warranty claim, we suggest that you contact us at us.support@hiboy.com as there may be a simple fix for your problem. Valid warranty claims will be processed through Hiboy within 1 year (The accessories is 6-months) of initial purchase.

Hiboy will not replace any part without first seeing photos or video of the damaged product. Customers need to provide us with evidence by email.

Shipping Damage Claims

In rare instances, the item received may be damaged during transportation. If shipping damage occurs, please contact us.support@hiboy.com and provide us with photo or video proof.

NOTICE: we will not accept Shipping Damage Claims later than 7 days from receipt of products.

Repair Service

For repair services, Hiboy will only provide free replacement parts.

All free accessories will not participate in the replacement or compensation for scratches during transportation.

Highboy also sells a version of the S2 with a detachable seat for 479.

The company sells an upgraded version, the S2 Pro, for 669 (which was discounted to 532 at the time of writing). It has a more powerful 500W motor (to the S2’s 350W motor), larger 10-inch tires (the S2 has 8.5-inch tires), and a longer maximum range of 25 miles, versus 17 for the S2. The S2 Pro is also available with a detachable seat for 559.

HIboy S2 review: Design

This is a functional scooter. Design-wise, it looks a bit nicer than other budget scooters, such as the GoTrax GXL V2 — the Hiboy S2’s cables are all routed internally down the front, and only pop out at the bottom.

The right handlebar has a push-button throttle and a handbrake to operate the scooter’s mechanical disc brake. On the left handlebar is another push button for the regenerative brakes. The controls were all comfortable and easy to use.

In the middle of the S2’s handlebars is a small color display, not unlike the one on the Segway Ninebot Kickscooter Max. In the center is a large readout that shows your speed; below that is a battery meter, and at the top is a bar that shows how much power the scooter’s motor is using or — if you’re using the regenerative brakes — how much energy is being sent back to the battery.

The S2’s deck is coated with a nice, grippy rubber that has small diamond-shaped nubs. While I felt the size of the deck was a touch small (at least for a big person like me), I never felt like my feet would slip off.

HIboy S2 review: Performance

The S2’s 350-Watt motor isn’t going to win you any races, but it was able to scoot me along at speeds of up to 19 miles per hour on flat roads. Uphill was another matter; when riding up my standard test incline (about a 6 percent grade), the S2 slowed down to around 3-4 miles per hour — slow enough that I almost had to get off and walk. If you’re a larger person, and plan to take your scooter up hills, I recommend a model with a beefier motor.

In addition to a headlight and a tail light, the S2 has a series of LEDs that run the length of its base, and illuminate the ground on either side of you. It’s a neat effect, and it helps others see you a bit better, too.

The S2’s headlight was fairly bright, and projected a beam that lit up the ground about 15 feet in front of the scooter. It was helpful when trying to spot potholes at night, but I wish it were just a tad closer to the front of the scooter.

The S2 rides on 8.5-inch rubber tires. While they will never go flat, it does result in a somewhat bumpier ride than I’d like over uneven pavement. I found myself avoiding cracks and potholes more than I would on a scooter with air-filled tires.

I liked that the S2 has both regenerative braking as well as a rear mechanical disc brake. I found myself using the former more than the latter; the regenerative braking was more gentle, so I came to a stop much more gradually than when using the disc brake, which was very aggressive. not that it’s a bad thing.

Good for commuters, the Hiboy S2 can fold up quickly, thanks to a sturdy but Smart latching mechanism in the front. I wasn’t as big a fan of the rear latch, which keeps the downtube in place when the scooter is folded.

You have to manually lift up a small metal loop, and snag a small hook on the downtube. It’s a little fussier than it should be. And, at just under 30 pounds, the S2 is heavier than the Razor Icon and the Unagi Model One, both of which weigh around 25-26 pounds.

HIboy S2 review: Battery life and range

Hiboy says that the S2’s max range is 17 miles, assuming you weigh 150 pounds, you’re riding in 77°F temperatures, and the throttle is at 50% on level pavement.

After about 7 miles of riding, which included some hills but was mostly flat, the S2’s battery was down to two bars out of five, so I’d estimate that the scooter would get around 10 miles before it needed a recharge. That’s not horrible, but it’s not much better than some of the best electric scooters for kids. Then again, your mileage may vary based on your size and where you ride.

HIboy S2 review: Verdict

If you can find the Hiboy S2 for 399, it’s a great value, as it delivers more features and a more powerful motor than other electric scooters around that price. The GoTrax GXL V2, for instance, has a 250W motor, a shorter 12-mile range, and costs about 330. The Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost, which has a 300W motor and a 12-mile range, is 289.

The Hiboy’s ride was on the rough side — which is not surprising, given its rubber tires — and its range could be better, but I did appreciate such niceties as the regenerative and manual brakes, as well as all the lighting. If your scooting needs are modest, you’ll find the Hiboy S2 will more than satisfy.
