When it comes to modern transport, everything is starting to change. With incredible electric technology, I see some excellent ways to get around, such as powerful electric bikes and agile one-wheelers.
One of the most popular forms of transport new to the last decade is electric scooters.
Electric scooters are a great way to get around. They are excellent value for money and perfect for city commutes. In this article, I will speak about a scooter with a lot of hype, the GXL V2. This scooter is a creation from Gotrax, who are well known for their high-quality scooters.
Who are the Team Gotrax?
Gotrax is a brand that makes electric vehicles, such as scooters and bikes. They are based in Texas in the US and were founded in 2017 and have an excellent range of electric scooters, most popular being the GXL V2, GXL Commuting, and the GKS sport. They use high-quality materials and are well known for their great customer service. The scooters are made by their long-term partner Tao Motors, one of the industry’s leading electric vehicle brands.
What Do I Look for in an Electric Scooter?
When it comes to getting great electric scooters, you have to look at the finer details. It is not always about how quickly it can go and how far. When I look at electric scooters, here’s what I look for.
Design
The design is one of the most important factors when finding the right scooter. You want a scooter that is comfortable to ride, will work with all different heights, and look great.
Motor
The motor is what propels the scooter forward. The more powerful the motor, the more capable the scooter will be. I look for scooters that have great motors.
Battery
The battery is what powers the motor. When I look at a scooter battery, I look for a few things. I want it to give the motor a good range to take you as far as possible.
Wheels and Tires
Wheels and tires on scooters often come in different sizes and styles. I want the wheels and tires of the scooter to match the scooter’s purpose.
Brakes
As you can imagine, brakes are very important on electric scooters. I look for scooters with great stopping power to keep you safe.
Special Features
Scooters can come quite basic, or they can be packed with special features. These features can really improve the experience and I like scooters that have gadgets with them.
Cost
The price is vital when it comes to buying a scooter. I don’t look for not the cheapest scooters, but the best value for money.

Design 4/5
When it comes to the design, Gotrax has done a great job on the GXL V2 scoring 4/5. It has a minimal look and comes across as sleek and stylish. It’s a good size scooter coming in at 43.3″ x 16.7″ x 44.1″, and will work with a wide range of users.
It has tall handlebars, which help with control, and a low center of gravity. This makes the GXL V2 great for handling. It also comes with a wide footplate and small tires, which adds to the agility and handling of the scooter.
Gotrax took their time when it came to the design, as everything looks in a good place. A good example is how the lighting sits flush within the handlebars, and the LCD display is flat inside the stem itself. The little details, like how the cables are run under the scooter, make it look like a whole unit, not a jumble of parts.
The folding ability is excellent if you use this bike for commuting. It means you can take it into the office or a shop without it being too bulky. Not only does this help while traveling, but it also makes for easy storage at home.
The only thing that lets the design down is the weight limit which is only 220 lbs. Although this is quite common on scooters of this price and size, it would have been nice to be 250 lbs or more. This scooter is better equipped for lighter riders.
Motor 3/5
When it comes to the motor it gets 3/5, the Gotrax GXL V2 has a 250w brushless motor. A brushless motor means that it is a modern system that offers better performance, a longer lifespan, and is much more compact. It is situated in the front hub, is very quiet, and works smoothly when accelerating.
At 250w, it’s not a very powerful motor. At the price range of 300 – 400, you typically won’t see anything over 500w. With a motor this small, it does make the top speed quite limited. The Gotrax GXL V2 only has a top speed of 15.5mph, and that’s when conditions are good.
Even though the scooter doesn’t have a huge motor, it still offers excellent performance in short bursts. It can climb gradients of up to 15 degrees in the right conditions and does accelerate to 15 mph in only 6.5 seconds.
Unlike other scooters, you don’t just twist the throttle to engage the motor. On the Gotrax GXL V2, you need to push it to get it rolling, and the motor will engage. This makes the scooter much less accident-prone but harder if you’re always stopping.
If you are looking for a full-on performance scooter, then the GXL V2 might not be for you. As far as a tool for getting around town and going out for the day it ticks all the boxes for us. To have something with more power, you will need to spend more money.
Battery 3/5
As far as the battery goes I give it 3/5. The battery on the Gotrax GXL V2 is a 5.2AH 36v lithium-ion battery. Lithium-ion is what most modern batteries are made from. They offer excellent efficiency and are designed for hundreds of charge cycles. Gotrax uses excellent batteries that last for years without losing too many cells.
You’re going to get around 12.5 miles on one single charge. This is typically in good conditions, on fairly flat terrain, with a rider weighing 75kg to 85kg. This isn’t a huge range, but it’s ideal for a short commute where you can charge the bike at work.
A smaller battery like the GXL V2 comes with some great advantages. Firstly the majority of the weight on a scooter is in the battery. When the battery is small, it makes the scooter very light. With smaller batteries, you also have very quick charge times. The GXL V2 has a very short charge time of 4 hours which is great.
The battery is very intelligent and doesn’t just power the motor on the GXL V2. It powers the lighting and the LCD display, and it has the ability to charge itself off the brakes while riding. I speak about this later in the brake section.
Wheel and Tires 4/5
As mentioned before, the wheels and tires make a big difference to the scooter’s ability and how it rides. The GXL V2 has 8.5” pneumatic tires, which I think are great for a scooter like this. 8.5” is an ideal size for a scooter made for towns and cities. The wheels being smaller makes them great for acceleration and very agile when steering.
Unlike many other scooters with solid tires, the GXL V2 has pneumatic tires. Pneumatic means that they are filled with air. This means you get a great grip for off-road riding and are much more comfortable when on the roads.
You do need to ensure they are pumped up every so often and might experience a puncture at some point. I feel that air tires offer a much better ride and are worth the extra maintenance. It allows you to adjust the pressure to suit the terrain you’re riding on. I give the wheels and tires a solid 4/5.
Brakes 5/5
The brakes are one of my favorite parts of this scooter because it has an incredible system so it deserves 5/5. It offers excellent stopping power and can take you from 15 mph to 0 in 5m. This is great not just for performance but safety too.
It has a disc brake on the rear and a drum brake on the front. The disc brake is great for riding in poor conditions and has a lot amount of power. Then we have the drum brake. Although weaker, it has an amazing ability.
The drum brake can transfer the energy from stopping the scooter and put some charge back into the battery. This is what is called regenerative braking. It does help, but it doesn’t force a huge amount of energy back in unless you are braking a lot.
The braking of this scooter comes in two stages to ensure that the wheels don’t lock. This is often referred to as the ABS system. It offers a smooth decline in speed and really improves how the scooter feels to ride.
Special Features 4/5
In my opinion, the special features of a scooter can make or break it. Luckily the Gotrax GXL V2 is packed with special features that really impressed me so it gets 4/5. Here’s what you can expect when you buy the GXL V2.
The first great feature is the lighting. It has an inbuilt front light. Not only does it make the scooter safer, but it also looks great and does help you ride at night in poor lighting conditions. Having them on does drain the battery quicker but not by much. The rear isn’t a light but does have a reflector.
Then we have the LCD display. Many modern scooters want you to connect your phone to the scooter to use that as a speedo. On the GXL V2, you don’t need to. It has a small LCD display telling you how much battery you have left and how fast you’re going.
It also comes with a kickstand, so you don’t risk it falling over, which is very handy. Another great special feature is the bag hook on the front tube, which makes it great for carrying things and keeping the weight low down.
Cost 5/5
For a lot of people, budget is the most important factor when it comes to buying a scooter. They hugely range from as little as 250 to 2000. The Gotrax GXL V2, depending on where you buy it, comes in at between 300 and 400.
It may not have the most powerful motor or the largest battery, but it does offer a huge amount when it comes to quality, performance, and amazing features. It offers incredible value for money and is well worth every cent so it gets 5/5.
Our Verdict
The Gotrax GXL V2 offers a lot as far as a scooter goes. Firstly it’s got a great design which not only is functional, but it looks excellent too. It’s incredibly lightweight, and the folding ability makes it so convenient.
It may not have an incredibly powerful motor, but it offers fast charging, quick acceleration, and an excellent braking system. It’s also packed with special features such as a kickstand, lighting, and an LCD display.
Overall, I really like the Gotrax GXL V2. For the price, very few scooters can offer the specification and performance this offers. Do I recommend it for purchase? Yes!

Hiboy S2
The Hiboy S2 is one of the most popular scooters in the world right now. It looks fantastic and has a very comfortable design, but it weighs 32 lbs and has a 500w motor which is very powerful. The Hiboy also comes with a top speed of 18.6mph and a range of 17 miles, which is excellent.
It comes with a strong braking system similar to the Gotrax GXL V2. Unlike other scooters, it does have 8.5” solid tires. They remove the puncture issue, but they don’t offer a comfortable ride and are awful off-road.
The Hiboy comes with lots of special features. You get cruise control, dual suspension, lighting, and you can even connect it to your phone with an application. The S2 does cost about 30% more than the Gotrax, but it does offer a lot more.
Xiaomi Mi M365
The Xiaomi Mi M365 is very similar to the Hiboy S2 in design but overall very different. It has a good design, is lightweight at 27 lbs, and ticks every box for us. With a top speed of 16.8mph and a great range of 18 miles, it’s got a great engine. It also has a charge time of 4.5 hours, with a range of 18 mph, is very short.
The M365 has a dual braking system like the Gotrax GXL V2 and can regenerate while being used. It has 8.5” small wheels, but unlike the Hiboy S2, these are pneumatic and offer a much higher level of comfort, which it needs without the suspension. It is also packed with special features such as lighting, an application, and you can buy loads of accessories from Xiaomi.
Xiaomi offers something slightly different from the Hiboy S2 and the Gotrax GXL V2. It’s on the higher end of the price than others, but it’s worth every cent, and I can see why so many people are going out and buying an M365.

The Gotrax GXL V2 has a top speed of 15.5mph. As far as scooters go, it’s not a high top speed. It’s enough for getting around towns and cities and is very light. Many countries have a speed limit on cycle paths of 15mph.
Gotrax is an excellent brand. They were founded in 2017, so they are not very old. They are partnered with Tao Motors, which is an industry leader. Between them, they make amazing functional ebikes and scooters.

The Gotrax GXL electric scooter has a simple yet elegant design. It’s a great e-scooter for teens and adults alike. It’s portable, sleek, and practical.
The scooter folds down easily and locks in place for when you encounter stairs or other non-rideable areas. But you wouldn’t want to carry it too far as it weighs 12 kg (26.4 lb).

Speed, Distance, and Battery
The make or break features of any electric scooter are the motor and the battery life. If one of these is bad, the whole scooter’s a write-off.
The Gotrax GXL V2 has an impressive 36 V Lithium-ion battery that can take the scooter a decent 20 km (12.5 miles) on a single charge. It takes around 4 hours to charge the battery from dead to full.
The powerful 250 W front hub motor on the GXL V2 can reach a maximum speed of 25 kph (15.5 mph). And it has two-speed options. Limit the scooter to a max speed of 16 kph (10 mph). ideal for beginners. or let loose and see for yourself what the GXL V2 is capable of.
The Brake System
The Gotrax GXL V2 electric scooter includes regenerative braking on its resumé. This means that energy gained is not lost through braking, but instead stored and reused. This is energy-efficient transport at its finest!
The original Gotrax GXL e-scooter had two brakes. Pushing the lever on the handlebar activated the front wheel’s electronic brake. And there was a foot pedal on the scooter’s deck to activate the rear wheel’s disk brake. 2 brakes sound safer than one right? Wrong!
On the GXL V2, Gotrax scrapped the electronic brake (which was jolty and didn’t work if the scooter was out of power) and replaced the foot pedal with a hand-brake.
The rear brake is still a disk brake but is silky smooth compared to the original GXL. And the GXL V2 hand-brake is easier to control than the original’s foot pedal.
Certification
We get the impression that Gotrax prioritises efficient performance and safety.
The Gotrax GXL V2 electric scooter is UL certified. This means the scooter’s electrical parts and battery have been tested against short-circuiting and overexertion under strict conditions (see UL-2271 Standard and UL-2272 Standard for more information).
The GXL V2 has an IP54 waterproof rating (Wikipedia). This means that the electronics are protected on all sides from sprays of water and dust or dirt.
Riding experience
Smooth asphalt is where the Gotrax GXL V2 performs its best. And as it’s made as a commuting electric scooter, you get the best results in urban areas and on flat roadways. But Gotrax allows for some variation here.
The 21.6 cm (8.5) air-filled tyres act as the scooter‘s suspension. they’re much better than previously used solid rubber tyres. The tyres will absorb most bumps from uneven surfaces, but expect to feel it in your legs and/or hands if you go for long rides on bumpy roads.
These pneumatic tyres also add grip; ideal for wet or slippery surfaces.
Going uphill the GXL V2 fairs ok. It can tackle up to 14-degree inclines, so don’t expect to be speeding up steep streets, but it handles itself well.
We were impressed by the load capacity of the GXL V2. It can carry up to 100 kg (220 lb). This is good compared with competing e-scooters. Of course, if you max-out the load capacity don’t expect to reach the maximum speed.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a good quality electric scooter for a reasonable price then the GXL V2 is worth considering. We would like to see a Gotrax smartphone app as an additional feature, but apart from that, there isn’t much we’d change.
The Gotrax brand is young, but it’s behind some exciting, sleek products. And it’s competing well in the electric rideable market.
All of this considered, we feel the Gotrax GXL V2 electric scooter has earned the rating 8.7/10.

Performance Overview
The Gotrax GXL v2 boasts an impressive 187-watt hour lithium-ion battery pack with a 250-watt motor. Both components are at the top-end of what can be expected at this low price point and offer a nice amount of power to your ride.
You’ll also find two speed modes (which are controlled like bike gears) allowing you to comfortably ride at 10mph or notch it up to the top speed of 15.5mph with ease. We found this particularly helped with hill climbing, accessing top power to effectively scour reasonable urban inclines (up to 10-degrees) though you will slow down close to the top.
One addition we were delighted to see in an electric scooter of this price is the cruise control functionality. By holding down your accelerator for 10 seconds, your scooter maintains its current speed. Whilst this option will drain your battery if used continuously, it makes the riding experience incredibly enjoyable, and is not even included on some of the high-end premium models.
This ease of control and use is the big selling point of the Gotrax GXL v2 in our opinion. It’s intuitive and fun to ride from the first time you ride.
Top Speed Acceleration
Gotrax market the GXL v2 with a top speed of 15.5mph which is definitely achievable but is of course dependent on many variables including rider weight and weather conditions.
The top speed is accessed easily with the intuitive gear system. We found the gears responsive enough to quickly shift the speed up if you’re at the foot of a slope or about to overtake another electric scooter rider.
Whilst the top speed might not stack up in comparison to more expensive models with dual motors, it’s plenty sufficient for urban riders, unless you live somewhere particularly hilly. Gotrax have pitched the speed capabilities perfectly for a commuter scooter – add in the nifty cruise control and it should be sufficient for even the pickiest of casual riders.
The acceleration on the Gotrax GXL v2 is very reasonable. It’s not going to lurch you into full speed as soon as you step on, but it achieves full pelt quickly and with ease.
You do need to kickstart the GXL v2, there’s no zero-start feature here, but this works reliably and the acceleration kicks in at around 2mph. You control your acceleration with an easy to access push button throttle which is well situated in the controls and very easy to manipulate, with limited stiffness.
Once you’re moving, you can reach top speed after a tested average of 10 seconds. Admittedly, this isn’t the speediest acceleration in comparison to other scooters, but once again, for the low price, its very reasonable.
Controls Display
The LED display on this electric scooter is actually not the biggest and it’s very simple with what it offers and shows you on the screen. It will clearly display your speed and the battery power that remains so you don’t get caught out.
The Gotrax GXL V2 also offers cruise control which is a really handy feature to have if you’re on a steady journey or to and from work where you can cruise at the same speed.
Battery Life Range
Gotrax are marketing the GXL v2 with a range of 12 miles on a single charge. When you compare this to its pricier counterparts, you may find the Gotrax GXL v2 but within its range, it performs admirably. This makes it the perfect electric scooter for short-distance trips, or a reasonable commute – which is exactly the rider Gotrax are pitching to.
We found we could achieve 9 miles at full charge, by again this varies from rider to rider. It’s worth taking into account that the lithium-ion battery regenerates a small amount of power every time you brake which can help expand the battery life somewhat. The charge time on the battery pack also sits at 3-4 hours, making it very quick to charge between rides. If you’re commuting to an office 8 miles away, you can charge it in the afternoon and reliably get yourself home.

The 250w single motor is found in the rear of the Gotrax GXL v2, which can mean a shift in balance if you’re accustomed to a dual motor.
However, we’ve found that single motor scooters often retain the feel of a traditional kick scooter, and that is certainly the case with the GXL v2. Once again, this pitches the scooter to a specific customer, who may be completely new to riding electric scooters and may find the weight distribution more comfortable.
Construction Build Quality
The GXL frame is surprisingly sleek. We’re used to budget electric scooters leaning to the bulkier side of design, with weight mechanisms. Not so with the Gotrax GXL v2.
Made from robust but lightweight aluminum the GXL v2 really does look the part next to pricier offerings. The 8.5 inch pneumatic tyres are compact to retain the streamlined look and there’s red detailing throughout. The whole package will particularly appeal to the image-conscious customers of commuter scooters
As you’d expect from an aluminum frame, the Gotrax GXL v2 electric scooter is deceptively sturdy and the manufacturer claims a top weight limit of 220lb. This max weight is more than what is offered from some of the scooters in the top price range, so is a welcome feature. It broadens the appeal of the GXL v2 even more, as it retains its good looks, whilst supporting a wider range of riders.
The build quality of the Gotrax GLX v2 really is impressive when you consider the overall cost. As we said, the aluminum frame gives a solidity to the scooter which is reassuring whilst riding and keeps it well-balanced without being clunky.
The foldable stem includes a locking mechanism to keep your folded scooter in place. This proved a little stiff to begin with, but when you get used to the way it operates and it loses its stiffness, you should bearly notice.
The controls of the scooter are focused around an LED display that sits flat in the handlebars – a nice design twist. The LED itself is simple, measuring speed and showing the battery status. Many riders are now accustomed to Bluetooth functionality or a separate app that collects numerous metrics as you ride. The Gotrax GXL v2 may seem rudimentary in comparison but its basic features function very well and the display is crystal clear, even at night.
One interesting thing to note is that light control, scooter power and gear options are all controlled from the same button which sits just below the handlebars in the stem of the scooter. This keeps the cockpit uncluttered but takes a little getting used to at first. Acceleration is easily accessed with the thumb throttle, which is simple to reach without stretching.
Far and away the most notable feature to us in the controls was the addition of a rear brake lever. This once again shows a real understanding of the Gotrax GXL v2 customer, who may be more accustomed to traditional bikes over electric scooters. The manufacturer has made this lever easy to manipulate and the brake responds quickly. It’s a great upgrade to the original model and made riding a breeze.
Suspension
The suspension on the Gotrax GXL v2 is dependent on the pneumatic tyres. With no additional suspension in place, the tyres take the brunt of the road impact. This places a lot of faith in the performance of the tyres, but luckily they’re up to the task.
They handle well on uneven terrain and cracks, but you can expect to experience some jolts through the stem and handlebars if you choose to speed down a wonky street. It’s worth taking into consideration how you plan to use the Gotrax GXL. As a commuter scooter with reasonable roads it will perform perfectly, but you’ll struggle to enjoy riding it down cobbled streets.
Ride Quality
The overall ride quality of the Gotrax GLX v2 is incredibly enjoyable. In good weather, with a clear smooth road and minimal hills – it’s a dream. The sturdy build of the frame, the comfortable handlebars and pneumatic tyres ensure a smooth ride and comfort throughout your journey, including quick turns and narrow spaces.
The quality does lag a little if you take a bumpy road or continually take hills. You’ll slow down of course, and the vibration through the handlebars can be quite jarring after a long period of time. For the price, you’re never going to get a scooter that can tackle every type of terrain, but for its intended purpose as a commuter scooter, you can’t go wrong.
Braking
The braking system is where you’ll find one of the major improvements over the previous model. The original GXL Commuter had a rear disc brake which was controlled by a foot pedal on the rear wheel. anybody who has tried to brake from top speed by controlling a rear foot pedal will understand the inconvenience this posed.
Gotrax has been savvy enough to change this up with the GXL v2 and the rear disc brake is now controlled with a front brake lever, reminiscent of a bike brake. When you couple this with the regenerative front brake, you have a braking system that is responsive and simple to apply, increasing the overall safety of the electric scooter.
It notable that many competitors within the same price range only have a single disc brake, which makes the inclusion of two high-quality brakes a real win for the Gotrax GXL v2.
Portability
Another quality that we loved in the GXL v2 is the sheer ease of portability. It’s a pretty slim scooter when it’s fully unfolded, but the lever-activated folding mechanism neatly reduces and locks the size to just 39.4″ long. This is the perfect size to take on public transport of discretely slip under a desk, as opposed to many other electric scooters which still take up room when folded down.
At 27lbs, the weight is an easy enough load to carry too. You shouldn’t find yourself straining to carry it up the stairs and brings it in line with other electric scooters touted for their portability (the Xiaomi M365 for example).
Water Resistance
The water-resistance of the Gotrax GLX v2 is listed as IP54. This means it is by no means waterproof but will certainly handle a gentle shower or shallow puddles. Being able to take your electric scooter out even in overcast weather is a big feature for many and contributes to its suitability for casual and commuting journeys.
Lights
The Gotrax GXL v2 has a single LED headlight mounted between the handlebars at the front of the scooter. Whilst the built-in light functions well enough, if you’re riding at night we would definitely recommend additional headlights with a wider light radius.
Unfortunately, the GXL v2 doesn’t come equipped with a rear taillight. This is easily rectified by purchasing additional lights but is still a little disappointing and seems like an oversight in a scooter designed especially for commuters.
Tyres
Tyres are a big talking point in the e-scooter community, particularly the debate on air-filled ‘pneumatic’ tyres vs airless ‘solid’ tyres. Both have their pros and cons but are definitely a premium feature when compared to your average scooter wheel. The Gotrax GXL v2 have kept the air tyres seen on the original model.
The 8.5 inch pneumatic tyres function as suspension for the GXL v2 and do an admirable job. The grip performs well even on slippy roads and you’ll be cushioned from the majority of bumps and skids you might encounter on a road. They also lend themselves to light manouveres and a quick to respond as you control the scooter.
One of the downsides of pneumatic tyres is that you are more likely to experience a puncture – the airless tyres are, by design, puncture-resistant.
It’s definitely something to consider if you plan to use the scooter day in day out. But overall, it shouldn’t pose much of a problem to you as Gotrax are well-reviewed for their customer service and have a wide array of spare parts and replacement accessories available for their electric scooters.
Deck
The deck of the Gotrax FLX v2 is a generous addition, measuring at around 19″ there is plenty of standing room and accommodation for larger shoe sizes. The grip on the deck is anti-slip and should keep you steady and stable throughout your journey. If you are a first time electric scooter customer, this will be a big bonus as you won’t have to adapt to a particular stance or shift you weight around too much to feel comfortable.
Reliability, Warranty Customer Support
Overall you will be hard-pressed to find a more reliable scooter within the price range of the Gotrax GXL v2. The battery is more than capable of keeping up with the motor and the general sturdiness of the tyres, brakes and build inspire confidence, making it a good choice for a nervous or first time rider.
The penumatic tyres have excellent grip and hold up even in light showers. This is especially important if you plan to commute with your electric scooter, as having to pack up and head for the bus at the first sign of drizzle is always disheartening.
Maintenance
Maintenance and upkeep are simple enough for the Gotrax GLX v2. Spare parts can be found through the manufacturer’s website, but you may incur shipping costs as the company are based in the US.
The only real disappointment we found in the GLX v2 was the measly 90 day warantee offered. When you compare this to the lifetime guarantee available on the Carrera Impel is-1 for example, it’s pretty poor.

Accessories
The Gotrax GLX v2 comes equipped with a few extra accessories that add to the overall build quality and rider experience. There’s the standard built-in kickstand, an effective push bell built into the handlebars and front and rear mudguards.
An additional feature is the reinforced rear fender on the back wheel – yet another upgrade to the previous Gotrax GLX. This adds to the stability of the scooter, whilst providing additional protection to the vulnerable back wheel and motor.

You definitely get an incredible electric scooter when it comes to this model from Gotrax. It’s one of the best selling in the US and around the world and highly reviewed due to all the great qualities it has to offer. It has a range of 12 miles when fully charged and is ideal for any commuter and offers a top speed of 15 mph which is more than sufficient!
