It is super portable and very lightweight weighing 29 lbs (13 kg ), yet is capable of a 28 mph (45 km/h) top speed, and 22 miles (35 km) of range. It speaks volumes to the development of compact electric scooters that such a lightweight scooter can be so potent.
It houses a 48V 9.6Ah battery and a front-wheel drive 500W/700W peak power motor. Even hill climbing is on the menu for this Mosquito. It is strong up 10% inclines in a way you would never expect it to be.
It has no less than three brake systems with a rear drum brake, rear step-on brake and a regen throttle brake on the front wheel that recharges the battery while you ride. The brakes work very well and the lever-actuated drum brake is the one you most likely will rely on for stopping power 90% of the time.
But surely something must have been compromised on such a sleek design? What about the riding experience?
The Mosquito can’t compete with bigger scooters that have air-filled tires and more advanced suspension systems as far as ride quality goes. But it still manages to incorporate a dual suspension system that does its job travelling over larger bumps and imperfections to smooth out the ride.
The stem can be adjusted for different length riders and the deck is surprisingly roomy, sitting low for better stability. The 8-inch wheels are solid making sure you never run flats, but will not have the same traction as air-filled ones.
The designer’s primary purpose with the Mosquito was not to give it the best ride quality of them all, but rather to offer one of the best folding electric scooters that were still fast and could pack a punch way above its weight class.
And it is when you need to pick it up that you start to smile broadly. It is so easy to fold and carry that it resembles an umbrella more than an electric scooter once folded. Folded dimensions are 13 x 6 x 42 inches (33 x 15 x 107 cm). You can put it almost anywhere and it is out of sight if not out of mind.
The build quality is also very good and the Mosquito has an IPX5 rating as well as a max weight capacity of 265 lbs (120 kg).
This is a fantastic scooter for either the beginner or more experienced rider that understands what it can offer. If you are one of those riders and you need the speed and range the Mosquito has but you must prioritize size, weight, and portability, then there is no contender to the Mosquito at the time of writing.

This scooters pretty amazing for being lightweight and highly portable something anybody could easily get around on and carry upstairs or into buildings. It’s not much bigger than one of those old ’90s razor scooters and it goes 20 mph. It’s light enough that really any adult could carry it I’m impressed. I do wish the handlebars were a little wider for stability but it is a lower speed scooter. The brakes are very powerful we’ve taken it to locations five to six miles out and back no problem. All around this is a very reliable sidewalk scooter.
Cityrider
The best folding scooter under 500
An interesting option to the fluid Mosquito is the fluid Cityrider although you need to know the differences between the two apart from it being a cheaper scooter. They are similar in weight although not in performance. The Cityrider is 1 lb lighter and tops the scale at 28 lbs (12,7 kg).
The idea behind the Cityrider is to offer a great entry-level innercity commuter that is easy to use, requires little maintenance and has a low-key design. A practical tool where top speed is not a priority and the 10-mile (16 km) range is considered sufficient enough for most inner cities.
A smaller battery and motor means less weight and that is part of the recipe for lightweight scooters. The Cityrider has a 36V 10.4Ah battery and a 350W front wheel motor. The top speed is 18 mph (29 km/h) and the acceleration is well-behaved and won’t scare you.
If the top speed and mile range differ between the Mosquito and Cityrider, then the tires are more similar. Non-air-filled 8,5-inch honeycomb solid tires will never puncture and also help with the ride quality as the Cityrider lacks a suspension system. The honeycomb structure provides a cushioning effect far more effective than you would imagine. As far as solid tires go, these provide the best ride quality of them all.
However, this is not an off-road scooter so staying on smooth surfaces is what you want to do.
There is no need for a massive braking system on this scooter and a rear drum brake as well as a rear step-on brake is good enough to slow you down effectively. And of course, it does have a regen brake that helps with charging the battery when you brake.
Folding it is very easy and it only takes a couple of seconds. Once folded it measures 20 x 19 x 43 inches (51 x 48 x 109 cm). The handlebars do not fold but are easily removed by unscrewing them should the need arise to do so. It is very easy to pick up and carry as the stem folds and attaches to the rear bumper.
This is a budget scooter but it still offers front and rear led lights, integrated turn signals as well as lateral reflectors. iOS and Android apps let you customize various riding modes, set cruise control etc.
It has a max weight capacity of 265 lbs (120 kg) however, it will perform better if you keep it around 220 lbs (98 kg) or less.
There is no IP rating and that might be a reason to choose the Mosquito instead. But if you live somewhere where rainfall is a rare occasion, short commutes are what you need it for and you like the asking price, then you have a candidate.

fluid Horizon
The fluid Horizon V2 is a somewhat heavier e-scooter at 42 lbs (19 kg) that is foldable and uses a proper latch-type clunky piece of metal mechanism that clicks distinctly when in the locked riding position.
The upper part of the stem also unlocks and lowers into the lower part in a telescoping manner to shorten it considerably for better portability. Handlebars fold as well to further help with creating as compact a package as possible.
If you want something slightly bigger than the Mosquito or Cityrider, the Horizon might tick the box.
The Horizon is an electric scooter you buy when you know precisely what you want. It is a perfect workhorse with a proven track record of reliability and with this second version, has improved waterproofing, a smoother thumb throttle and a pre-installed carrying handle.

At the front, you will find an air-filled 8.5-inch tire and on the rear an 8-inch solid one. The reason for this is that 90% of flats occur on the rear and this eliminates the risk of that. Traction can never be the same as on pneumatic tires but the rear is instead slightly wider to prevent it from skidding easily under braking or on damp surfaces.
There are two choices of batteries. A 48V 10.4Ah with 23 miles of range (37 km) or the bigger 48V 13Ah with a 30-mile range (48 km).
A 500W/800W peak power motor on the rear wheel is strong enough for a 23 mph (37 km/h) top speed. The acceleration is smooth and steady rather than snappy fast.
The one thing that needs to be mentioned is the braking system. The drum brake as well as regen brake works fine, although there are stronger brakers out there. Planning for this when riding and getting to know your Horizon is well advised. The drum brake option will most probably last forever though and maintenance will be minimal.
It is when you fold it that you also understand the appeal of compact folding electric scooters. Once folded it measures 40 x 7 x 13.8 inches (102 x 18 x 35 cm). This helps qualify it as one of the best folding electric scooters you can get your hands on.
It is not a flashy scooter if that makes sense, but it was never meant to be. I purchased my Horizon a month ago. I have used it everyday weather allowed and it’s amazing ! I am a 53 yr old man but this PEV makes me feel like a kid again.(can’t say scooter w/out feeling as if testosterone leaves my body up utterance!) LOLI weigh 195 and it Max’s out at 24 mph on flat straight away and 15% inclines at 15 mph or more. Range on 10.4 Amp is 23 miles. I wish I had gone with larger battery. Dual quick-release levers, similar to those you find on a bicycle make the process of folding the stem quite uncomplicated. Once down it hooks onto the rear bumper to secure it properly before lifting. It does not have folding handlebars though.
This one can be used as a daily commuter and the process of folding the stem is quick enough even if you do it every day a couple of times.
Praised among experts and users alike as a fantastic powerful yet portable scooter that can be used on dirt and off-road (if not too extreme), this second version has improved what was already a great baseline.
There is a choice of two battery versions, 60V 18.2Ah or a 60V 24.5Ah. The smaller battery has a 33-mile range (53 km) and the bigger one stretches that to 53 miles (72 km).
It will recharge in 10-12h with the standard charger. There is an optional 5A fast charger available that reduces the charge time by 60-70%.
This is a fast scooter with strong acceleration, to say the least. If this is the first time you try a proper fast electric scooter, be prepared and bend your knees. You can choose between dual or single-motor modes. Even in single-motor mode, the top speed is 30 mph (48 km/h). Engage the second motor and you will reach a top speed of 40 mph ( 64 km/h).
In dual motor mode and going full throttle from a standstill you will do 0-15 mph (24 km/h) in just over 2 seconds. An eye-opening experience when you do it for the first time. Thankfully, the sinewave motor controllers are mapped for a smooth rather than head-snapping acceleration curve.
This means you need to stop properly and you will be able to. Not only because the dual Zoom hydraulic disc brakes are best in class, but also because the front and rear spring arm suspension is brilliant and doesn’t dive down and forward under braking. And yes, it does have a regen brake system as well.
That dual suspension system, 10-inch pneumatic tires and sturdy construction make the ride quality fantastic. Kerb hopping, bumps, and imperfections in the road don’t bother the Mantis. You can go on dirt trails, grass, and even some lighter off-road as well.
It is a bigger scooter as it weighs 65 lbs (29 kg), has a weight limit of 265 lbs (120 kg) yet is still portable enough to carry shorter distances and you can fit it into a mid-size car trunk.
This is not your typical inner-city commuter but rather a combination of a longer commute that you can bring with you to tighter spaces.
A proper high-mounted headlight brightens up the road in the dark very effectively. Two front and rear LED lights plus a lateral LED strip will also make sure you are seen at night and it comes with turn signals.
Is this the best folding electric scooter? Some would say yes. It has an IPX5 rating, it is fast yet controllable, it is biggish but not a monster, still foldable and you can ride it over rougher terrain without it complaining too much.
Maybe the best foldable electric scooter you can get at the asking price.

Wolf Warrior X
The Wolf Warrior X and its siblings are next-level electric scooters. These are big boys with a lot of performance under the skin.

It weighs 79 lbs (36 kg) and has a max weight capacity of 265 lbs (120 kg).
There are two battery versions available and whichever you choose, there is plenty of oomph in either one. The Standard version has a 60V 21Ah battery with a 40-mile range (64 km) and the Pro:s bigger battery will be able to go 52 miles (84 km).
This electric scooter has two charging ports and with the recommended 5A fast charger, the charge time can be reduced by 70% bringing it down to 5 instead of 14 hours.
Note that the Standard version has a slightly higher top speed and faster acceleration. The bigger battery and Smart management system of the Pro extend the range but the added weight affects the performance slightly. But who cares? The Standards top speed is 44 mph (71 km/h) and the Pro stops at 41 mph (66 km/h). Fast enough for you?
These are not the most important features as whichever you choose will be plenty fast. They both have gut-wrenching acceleration and you need to know how to handle all that torque.
Dual motors with 1000W/3000W of peak power mean the Warrior X will spin both wheels on tarmac if you gun the throttle in the most powerful dual motor mode setting from a standstill. All the Wolf’s do this. Ye be warned. And it is a trigger throttle version which not all prefer. But fret not, if you like what you read about this scooter, there is a version as described further down in this blog, the Warrior X GT, with some updates and a stronger overall package that also includes a thumb throttle.
The look and feel of the Warriors are dominated by a dual motorcycle-style stem with front hydraulic shocks. This in unison with the dual rear spring suspension and 10 x 3-inch air-filled tires are the basis for fantastic ride quality. There is an option to get off-road tires and you might consider that if you want to go for great runs in the forest or other challenging terrain.
Stopping power is adamant and it will be sufficient with dual Zoom hydraulic disc brakes as well as an adjustable regen system. It will stop as effectively as it accelerates.
The lights package is nothing less than excellent. Double-front headlights light up the road dazzlingly. Bright front and rear turn signals and deck lighting which is easily controlled and customized via an app also make you visible to others. The build quality is superb. It has an IPX5 rating so slightly wet conditions shouldn’t be an issue.
This is a scooter that will appeal to the rider who has a longer commute and maybe needs to jump some curbs or travel over dirt roads, fields, and grass, to get to where you need to be. But also something you can put in the trunk of your car and go for weekend rides and explore nature.
There are bigger Wolfs which we cover below, yet, the Warrior X might be the best option as even though it is a big scooter, it is still more compact with a ton of performance and the asking price is also to be considered.
Most off-road scooters for the money?
This scooter is awesome!! I’ve had it about 2 weeks and am using it to commute about 5 miles round-trip, to and from work. It easily does 35-40mph in dual motor/turbo mode. Allows you to stay with the flow of traffic (in a 35mph zone). Lighting is excellent. front and back. you are easily seen in low light/darkness. Working turn signals and flashing brake light system-outstanding. I am recharging about every 3 trips (~15 miles). but that’s riding fast in dual motor/turbo mode. Haven’t tried single-motor for mileage efficiency. Love the weight and maneuverability too. easy to lift and put in the car for transport and light enough to move around within building for parking/recharge. Perfect tail-grab bar. Dual-fork system feels very stable and easy to maneuver the scooter. Excellent hydraulic brakes. Ride platform is great size. Great customer service from the FluidFreeRide Team. Mantis King GT
If you are in love with the Mantis V2, you are not alone and we understand. So much so that the manufacturer has decided to further improve it and the result is the magnificent Mantis King GT.
Even though the King GT is bigger and heavier it is still a portable scooter. It weighs 74 lbs (33,6 kg) and once folded it measures 50 x 26 x 23 inches (127 x 66 x 58 cm) which is not exactly compact to be fair but, you will not buy it for that reason.
It is completely redesigned and offers more of that sweet Mantis feel that has endeared so many users.
There is more power on offer with dual 1100W/4200W peak power motors and dual 60V 30A Sinewave controllers that not only are stronger but also deliver a smoother performance than before.
The top speed is 43 mph (69 km/h) and the acceleration is blindingly quick. It only takes 1,9 seconds to reach 15 mph ( 24 km/h) from zero.
The power source is a 60V 24Ah battery pack and the mile range is 56 miles (90 km). Two chargers are included on delivery and it takes 7-8 hours to recharge.
The risk of trying a Mantis King GT is it sets a benchmark when it comes to ride quality that you can’t live without once you’ve tested it. Part of the reason for that is it has adjustable hydraulic front and rear shock absorbers. The various ways you can adjust its preload and rebound travel are unique.
You can set it up for off-road or supersharp racing on tarmac. 10-inch air-filled tires with the option of street or off-road knobby ones are part of the package. The roomy deck which is slightly longer and wider than on previous models also helps with improving the handling.
These high-end scooters need proper stopping power and the King GT has a fully hydraulic dual disc version with 140 mm rotors as well as regen braking. The bite is supereffective and one of the best in class.
A strong high-mounted front headlight is a welcome upgrade as well as very bright LED deck lighting and separate brake and turn signal indicators. Top-notch. For a 2k bike it has all the major features one might want quite happy! But its the small details that are missing, for the price and hype I expect to a very thoughtful bike.
For weather conditions, the mudguards are alright, I’d expect something a little substantial but they work. But if you want a rider with running boards you NEED a skirt guard, a chaincase as well would keep them from getting tangled up, and the chain lasting longer too. Internal Gears could’ve been another good weather bonus.
A built in Frame Lock would really let me jump into the convenience store for a minute without a big hassle! As a cargo bike everyone should get such a feature. It could have even connected to the app to warn me if it gets moved/unlocked before I’m back.
TL;DR Overall great, but expected more leading-edge details thoughtfulness.
I bought 2 hovsco hov alphas and since then my neighborhood saw these nice bikes and now our neighbor hood has 4 dis-including ours. I have had some problems like errors and replacement parts, BUT THEY TAKE WEEKS TO ANSWER if you just say hello it will take them a while to say hello back, you can’t call or text without an answer I have never heard anyone from hovsco before even after calling at least 8 times I’m not an annoying customer I just want to make the best out of a almost 2k bike
I’ve been riding ebikes for many years, and this is the best bike I’ve had. I have joint pain and the only way for me to ride with my wife is with the help of my ebike. I recently switched to Hovsco after a test ride. It’s been nearly a month and I love it!
