Featherweight Torque Monster Fun: Meet the Graft EO.12 Electric Dirt Bike

Another electric dirt bike hits the market, but this time our e-moto expert thinks it might be a winner. The Graft EO.12 is super light, loaded with power, and comes in at a reasonable price point.

The electric motorcycle market is a sea of shiny new renders and vaporware — full of empty promises and teasers. So why am I excited about the Graft EO.12 dirt bike? I’ll give you three good reasons.

The EV world was a small, awkward place a decade ago when I started following Graft’s founder Azizi Tucker. He was one of the first engineers at Tesla and I was building racing electric motorcycles at the time. He’s a fellow University of Michigan engineer but lives and works in Taipei where Graft is based.

I’m particularly jealous of his career with XING Mobility, a group founded around making racing machines that seem to dabble in business on the side. Endlessly curious about electric machines, we’re cut from the same cloth.

On top of the founder’s heritage, Graft has been planning this move for 2 years and it’s ready to build today.

“We are hardcore riders first and foremost and we push our machines very hard every ride. As result, we have designed a very robust motorcycle to deal with the realities of enduro and even hard enduro riding. We have a very unique design in which all electrical components can easily be replaced in a matter of minutes if there is crash damage. We stock full spare components and ship to customers as needed.”.Azizi Tucker, Graft EV founder.

Graft EO.12 Specifications

Weight: 110 lbs. Torque: 440 Nm Top speed: 50 mph Peak power: 34 horsepower Charge time: 1.5 hours Range: 3 hours (varies due to terrain and riding style) Swingarm: Billet CNC machined 6061-T6 Aluminium Wheelbase: 53.8″ Shock absorber: Three-way adjustable air shock w/ hydraulic bump stop Front suspension: Three-way adjustable 42mm inverted fork w/ hydraulic bump stop Battery type: Lithium-Ion Battery pack voltage: 80 V Battery pack capacity: 2.7 kWh Battery pack life cycle: 2,000 charge cycles MSRP: 8,500-12,500

Graft EV: Torque Talks

Graft claims the highest power-to-weight ratio of any off-road e-moto in the market. At just 110 pounds, the EO.12 is featherweight. Pair that low weight with a peak 25 kW (34 horsepower) motor, and I don’t doubt its claims.

The number that gets me excited is a whopping 440 Nm of torque at the rear wheel. Acceleration will be mentally fast up to its 50 mph top speed. Graft employs 3D-printed titanium parts to manage this torque delivery without adding weight.

I’m calling it now: Torque-to-weight ratio is the new hotness.

Graft EO.12: Carbon Fiber Wheels

Fully 25% of the Graft EO.12’s weight reduction comes from a full-carbon wheelset. Reducing the unsprung mass at the wheels should make this machine super lively and snappy.

However, snappy isn’t always the adjective you want when talking about carbon fiber. When damaged, carbon can sometimes fail explosively. I would be very nervous riding this in a rock garden.

EO.12 Battery

Graft claims the EO.12’s 2.7 kWh battery will give you 3 hours of trail riding. My guess is that aggressive riding and sandy hilly terrain could cut that in half, but such is true of any e-moto.

After a couple of hours of hard riding, you’ll need to recharge anyway. The EO.12 will be ready to ride again in 90 minutes, just enough time to grab lunch and a nap.

If you’re feeling impatient, the battery can be swapped out with basic hand tools for all-day fun.

Graft EV: Upgrade Ready

The Graft EV battery is future-proof by design. The company pledges to keep the same battery shape for the next 10 years while gradually upgrading its internals. These packs will be shared by all future Graft vehicles as it expands into other off-road segments, like UTVs and quads.

Just like most modern EVs, the EO.12 dirt bike has cellular connectivity, for over-the-air updates. It also features a color touchscreen, so you can keep your distracting phone in your while shredding singletrack. A mobile app and a web-based portal are also in the works so riders can stay up to date with the health of their machine.

Graft EO.12: Built to Spec

The EO.12 starts at 8,500 and climbs to 12,500, depending on component specs. With different riding modes, no gears to change, and a low seat height, this should be an approachable bike for entry-level and seasoned riders alike. While you could pay less for a gas bike, the quiet rush of electric torque is a serious value.

Plus, you’ll likely save 500/year on the total cost of ownership when you factor in fuel, oil, and maintenance. Does anyone else out there hate carb tuning as much as I do?

Expect shipment after you order an EO.12 to typically be 60-90 days later, but the company says this can vary based on model version and component availability. Graft EV is shipping globally, but also working on building out a dealer network world wide.

Is the Graft EO.12 Worth Your Money?

I’ve witnessed — and been an employee at — many failed electric vehicle startups, so I’m hesitant when anything new and shiny comes along. The design, power output, and performance of the EO.12 look very well thought out, exactly what I’d expect from EV veterans like Azizi. He’s building the bike I’m dreaming about, and he has the chops to pull this off.

Even with good funding and Smart teammates, it’s no small endeavor to build and deliver a new vehicle. I would need to see a plan for U.S. service and support and a warranty agreement before buying my own. There’s also zero information about the display and interface.

That said, I’m just about ready to book tickets to Taipei for a test ride! I will take my torque smorgasbord with a side of bubble tea, please.

Stay up to date with all things Graft here. I’m excited to see this company’s adventure machines on North American trails soon.

Gowow ORI Electric Dirt Bike – Soon on Indiegogo?

Gowow ORI is a new exciting electric dirt bike from a Gowow company in China. Gowows website is still in the works, so all information in article we wrote is internet hearsay until we hear back from Gowow.

UPDATE 24.8.2022.

We did hear from Gowow. So happy we were wrong. The specs are amazing. Battery is bigger.! Check it out:

Battery is 2,8 kWh! ( we were wrong ), 9 kW peak power motor, 3,5 h charging time.

We have a 2023. winner if distributor price stay the 6990 in dealer shops!

What do we THINK we know about Gowow ORI Electric Dirt Bike?

Gowow specs that we have right now do not offer much proof what is under the hood:

Speed:100 Km/h

Range: 100 Km ( 25 Km/h speed )

Torque: 420 Nm

Since there is no information available about exact battery capacity and electric motor power, we would say that the motor should have peak power of around 8 – 11 kW and a battery of at least 1,9 kWh to have the specs mentioned here. We will have to wait for the correct info!

featherweight, torque, monster, meet, graft

Motor tourque number is probably correct because the chain reduction going from the central motor to the wheel looks big enough, and there is space inside the motorbike shell for primary reduction! Sur-ron Light-bee has a similar chain-ring on the rear wheel and with its reduction ( 1:7,6 ), it achieves 320 Nm.

Therefore, the central motor used in ORI should have about 15% – 20% more torque before the reduction and that is very much possible. Remember, these are just our thoughts, these are not correct or confirmed specs!

Gowow calls their bike on groups: “Smart all-terrain dirt electric bike”. Therefore, there has to be at least a CAN protocol or an exchange of information between the controller, battery, and display.

Translated from Chinese: “ORI adopts the automative-grade CAN communication system and combines multiple control algorithms such as FOC, MTPA, FW. With these systems, the bike can achieve a high level of sensitive and precise customization of how this electric dirt bike performs.

Sleek lines and minimalist design remind us of Kalk Cake electric dirt bike. We expect quality build here, even tho this is the first electric dirt bike from this company, so it will be interesting to see the assembly plant and who is manufacturing it.

Dirt bike size is something we are waiting to see. Sur-Ron Light-bee is a perfect commuter, but if you ask any Sur-Ron rider: Would you like it to be 10% higher, longer, etc. All would say yes since Light-bee is best for smaller riders ( still do not understand why Sur-Ron never addressed this and updated the original Light Bee, but that’s another story).

We will wait to see the geometry design, seat height, ORI dirt bike length, front and rear shock travel, and wheel size until we can recommend it to Americans or European riders!

To our understanding, the suggested retail price will be 6990, but there will be a world premier on Indiegogo where the first 100 bikes will go for 5500.

On Gowow Instagram, there are a bunch of dealers mentioned as general distributors so pushing a bike to the customers should not be a problem. The only thing that can mess up the plans are COVID, Logistic problems, and all currency-related problems with Inflation. We hope for 2023. will be better than this year!

Gowow ORI Conclusion

We cannot say if the price is competitive or not, as we are waiting for technical specifications ourselves. We can see that light electric moped class and light electric dirt-bikes are doing good on markets in the EU and USA. To succeed in Europe, Gowow will need to make a homologated version of Gowow ORI like Sur-ron and Caofen did with their bikes.

We hope to get more information about ORI soon, and when we do; we will share it with you!

Top 5 Fastest Electric Dirt Bikes for Adults in 2022

Only when you step out into the unknown do adventures begin. For some riders who enjoy the thrill of off-roading, this entails riding their bikes on surfaces other than paved ones. The dirt bike is their preferred mode of transportation for going on adventures.

Here is a list of the top 5 Electric Dirt bikes that we believe are worth your attention if you’re looking for the best dirt bikes to buy. Be aware that some of these bikes have been pre-released but have also been announced for sale in India. Some of them might not even be permitted on public roadways. With the advent of the electric dirt bike, our off-road environment of dirt, mud, and rocks has undergone a significant transformation.

A motorbike built for use on difficult terrain that is powered by batteries is known as an electric dirt bike. An electric dirt bike is noise- and maintenance-free equipment that is more environmentally friendly than a typical dirt bike.

But, Does the electric dirt bike provide the same level of strength, speed, and driving enjoyment as the classic off-road motorcycle?

They were previously known as “e-dirt bikes” and were intended as toys for children and teenagers. However, with the most recent innovations and advancements in electric motors and battery technology, we are set to test the boundaries of battery-powered bikes on the harshest terrains and dirt tracks.

following is the list of the top 5 fastest electric dirt bikes in 2022

Electric Scooters Top Speed
Alta Redshift MX 180km
CAKE Kalk OR 180km/h

Redshift MX Electric Motocross Bike from Alta Motors

A professional, full-featured race motocross dirt bike is the Alta Redshift MX.

Although Alta Motors no longer produces electric dirt bikes, we had to include this model on the list. It continues to be the ONLY fully functional electric motocross dirt bike made.

A Redshift is still available on the used dirt bike market. The Redshift MX has a top speed of about 50 mph, and its battery life is about an hour. But the Redshift MX’s superior construction is what sets it apart. The dirt bike has top-notch components all over.

The front fork and rear shock of the Alta Motors Redshift are also equipped with WP suspension. The brakes on a well-built, high-quality dirt bike are what you would come to expect.

The BEST electric dirt bike available was this one. Since Alta Motors regrettably closed its doors in 2019, you cannot purchase a new one for 2020, hence I did not include it above.

Get one if you can on the used dirt bike market!

Alta Redshift MX Specifications and Features

  • Pro WP suspension
  • Pro brakes
  • Pro chassis
  • The best electric dirt bikes
  • the highest speed of 50 mph

CAKE Kalk OR

Sweden’s top electric dirt bike, the Kalk OR, is built for off-road performance. The Swedish business Cake is dedicated to creating cutting-edge, lightweight electric dirt bikes. They currently have a limited number of models from the Kalk lineup, grouped into two groups. both for backcountry exploration and racing.

Models made by Kalk or Freeride are appropriate for backcountry trail riding.

While dirt motorcycles like the Kalk Or and Ink Race Models are made for racing, keep in mind that they have the same power as the opposing freeride line-up and are just a little heavier.

Kalk OR electric dirt bike Specifications

  • run time of three hours
  • eleven kW (15hp)
  • the maximum speed of 50 mph
  • max torque of 42 Nm, with 280 Nm on the back wheel

KTM Freeride E-XC Electric Dirt Bike

The new 2022 KTM Freeride E-XC is a hybrid between a full-size enduro/motocross dirt bike and a trial dirt bike, just like the previous 2020 and 2021 models.

The removable Lithium-Ion KTM PowerPack powers the 2021 KTM Freeride E-XC Electric Dirt Bike. This enables you to purchase an extra lithium-Ion KTM battery that you can quickly switch out when you go riding for the day.

The KTM Freeride E-XC is a single-speed automatic with a maximum horsepower output of 24.5.

However, do not be deceived by the modest horsepower…

  • Outstanding torque can be obtained with an electric dirt bike.
  • The KTM PowerPack battery can be fully charged in 1.3 hours.
  • The electric Freeride is made of a steel composite frame, so it can withstand any punishment you may give it.
  • The stock shocks on the 2021 Freeride E-XC are WP Xplor PDS.
  • The 2022 KTM Freeride’s seat height is 910 mm. or 35.82 inches.

  • 24.5 maximum HP with 5000 RPM Xplor 48 PDS Changeable Shock Absorber PowerPack Lithium-Ion
  • Single-speed liquid-cooled automatic

Sur-Ron X- Electric Dirt Motorbike

In the world of electric dirt bikes, the Sur Ron X electric dirt bike is a relative newbie.

A few distinctive aspects of the Sur-Ron dirt bike are noteworthy. When you take off the throttle while in sports mode, the Sur Ron X enables Regenerative coasting and recharges the battery.

The battery in the Sur-Ron electric dirt bike is made by Panasonic. The Sur-Ron X’s top speed is 20 MPH, which is not very fast for a motorcycle that is allowed on public roads. To increase the power/top speed, you can make a simple tweak, though.

The Sur Ron dirt bike has a 62-mile range when configured in the street-legal mode, although I have my doubts about this. The battery has a full suspension, front, and rear brakes, and is swappable.

Specs and Features for Sur Ron X

  • 47 mph top speed, 6 kW maximum power
  • range of 20 to 60 miles (Sport or Eco Mode)
  • 3 hours for charging
  • in two suspensions
  • Removable Ion battery pack from Panasonic
  • Both wheels have regenerative coasting piston hydraulic brakes.
