Once you send us a photo of the reading showing the voltage is low, we can have a shipping label sent to you to return the battery. Once the defective battery is received, we will have a new battery shipped out to you as soon as possible.

    E lectric T rike Intro

A 3-wheel electric bike or an electric trike is a bike with 3 wheels for steadiness, powered by an electric motor that relies on rechargeable power batteries. There are various electric trikes for sale in the market, with fat tires, better grip, and long-lasting batteries that are eco-friendly, highly comfortable, fast, and provide a means to travel cost-effectively.

With Covid halting all outdoor activities in the previous years, people were confined to the comfort of their homes without any physical activity to attend to. No gyms, no running, and certainly no cycling! However, as the restrictions eased up this year, since the provision of vaccines, almost everyone is out of their safe space, trying to return to a regular life routine.

Fitness and health come first, and to get that body in shape. Many people are back in their gyms or working on some form of physical exercise. One such brilliant way to stay fit and travel comfortably is to use a 3-wheel electric bike

The e-trike industry flourished in the past year, as adult electric fat tire tricycles became popular for commuting and keeping sustainability in check. However, like every other technology, e-trikes have a few cons among many pros; let’s discuss them to gain a better perspective.

    Pros and Cons

There are many advantages to using an electric bike or trike, but some disadvantages make a choice harder.

Pros of an E. T rike

    A viable option for seniors

Adult e-trikes are convenient for the elderly, disabled, and children as much as it suits a typical healthy adult. Seniors with low body balance and muscle strength can easily ride a tricycle. It will keep them fit and is easy to operate.

    Environmentally amiable

It is excellent for the environment. Its eco-friendly system and electric motor don’t produce much noise. It also doesn’t emit any carbon-based smoke and is very efficient. All parts of a 3-wheel electric bike can be recycled instead of thrown in a landfill, making it a highly suitable choice for environmental Passionists.

There are different types of electric tricycles depending on their intended use and design. Here are a few examples:

    Cargo electric tricycles:

Cargo electric tricycles are designed specifically to transport heavy loads over shorter distances. They are popular among courier companies, delivery services, and small businesses that require a cost-effective and reliable method of transporting goods within urban areas. These tricycles typically feature a sturdy cargo compartment located at the back of the vehicle, which can carry loads of up to 500 pounds or more. They are usually equipped with powerful hub motors that provide enough torque to overcome hilly terrains and carry heavy loads without straining the battery.

In addition, they often come with features such as hydraulic brakes, adjustable seats, and suspension systems, making them comfortable and safe to ride even on bumpy roads. One of the main advantages of cargo electric tricycles is their low operating cost. They are cheaper to run and maintain than traditional delivery vehicles, and they can navigate through narrow streets and alleys that are inaccessible to larger vehicles. Cargo electric tricycles are an innovative and efficient alternative to traditional delivery vehicles, offering a greener and more cost-effective way of transporting goods within urban areas.

    Semi recumbent electric tricycles:

Semi-recumbent electric tricycles are a type of electric tricycle that features a comfortable, almost-horizontal seating position, making them ideal for longer rides. They are a popular choice among seniors, individuals with physical disabilities, and anyone looking for an easier and more comfortable way to bike. Semi-recumbent electric tricycles typically come with large, comfortable seats that feature backrests and adjustable angles, allowing riders to find the perfect riding position. They also have easy-to-reach handlebars that provide a comfortable grip, as well as a footrest that allows riders to stretch out their feet. These tricycles are equipped with powerful electric motors that provide a smooth, effortless ride, even when traveling uphill or against headwinds.

They are often fitted with large, wide tires that provide excellent stability and traction, making them suitable for a wide range of terrains, including gravel paths, dirt trails, and smooth pavements. One of the main advantages of semi-recumbent electric tricycles is their accessibility. Their low-step design and stable platform make them easy to get on and off, even for people with limited mobility, and their comfortable seating position allows riders to go further and experience the joys of cycling without discomfort. Semi-recumbent electric tricycles are a great option for anyone looking for a comfortable, stable, and efficient way to ride around town or explore the great outdoors.

    Tadpole electric tricycles:

Tadpole electric tricycles are a type of electric tricycle that feature two wheels in the front and one wheel in the back, giving them a tadpole shape. This design provides increased stability and maneuverability, making them popular among riders of all ages and abilities. The front wheels on tadpole electric tricycles are often equipped with independent suspension systems, which provide a smooth ride over bumpy or uneven terrain. The rear wheel is powered by an electric motor, which provides pedal-assist, meaning that the motor will help you when you pedal, making it easier to climb hills and travel longer distances. Tadpole electric tricycles are often available with a variety of features, including adjustable seats and handlebars, storage baskets, headlights, taillights, and other options that make them more convenient and comfortable to ride. One of the advantages of tadpole electric tricycles is their stability. With two wheels in the front, these tricycles are less prone to tipping over than other types of electric trikes. Additionally, the low center of gravity makes them easier to control, especially at low speeds or when turning.

Tadpole electric tricycles are an excellent option for anyone looking for a stable, comfortable, and efficient way to ride around town or explore the great outdoors. They are suitable for people of all ages and abilities, and their pedal-assist feature makes them an excellent choice for those looking for a low-impact form of exercise.

    Folding electric tricycles:

Folding electric tricycles offer many of the same benefits as traditional electric tricycles, with the added convenience of being able to fold up and store or transport easily. These tricycles are a great option for those with limited storage space or for those who frequently travel with their tricycle. Folding electric tricycles typically feature a compact design, with a lightweight frame that can be easily folded and stored in a small space. Despite their smaller size, many folding electric tricycles still provide excellent stability and maneuverability, thanks to their three-wheel design. One of the benefits of folding electric tricycles is their portability. These tricycles can be easily taken on public transportation, as they can be folded up and stored in a small space. They are also easy to store in a car trunk or a small garage. Folding electric tricycles often feature a range of features that make them comfortable and convenient to ride. These features can include adjustable seats and handlebars, storage baskets, headlights and taillights, and other options.

Folding electric tricycles are a great option for those who want the benefits of an electric tricycle, but need the convenience and portability of a folding bike. They offer a stable and efficient way to get around town or explore the outdoors, with the added bonus of being easy to store and transport.

    Delta electric tricycles:

Delta electric tricycles are a specific type of electric tricycle that features a delta or tadpole configuration. This means that the two wheels are located at the rear of the tricycle, with a single front wheel that provides steering. Delta electric tricycles are known for their stability and maneuverability, especially when it comes to turning corners. The rear wheels are spaced wider apart than on traditional electric tricycles with a single rear wheel, which provides greater stability and balance.

The front wheel contributes to steering, allowing riders to make tight turns with ease. Delta electric tricycles are also known for their power and efficiency. They often come with a powerful motor and battery that can provide a longer range than other types of electric tricycles. Some models also feature pedal-assist technology, which combines electric power with manual pedaling to provide an even greater range. Some other features of Delta electric tricycles might include adjustable seats and handlebars for increased comfort, storage baskets or racks for carrying groceries or other items, and lights for increased safety during nighttime riding.

Overall, Delta electric tricycles offer a stable, powerful, and efficient way to get around town or explore the outdoors. They are a great option for those who want the stability of a three-wheeled configuration and the convenience of electric power.

When electric tricycle meets electric bike:

Portability: Electric bikes are lighter and can be easily transported if needed. Speed: Electric bikes can travel at faster speeds and can even reach speeds of up to 30 mph depending on the model. Range: Electric bikes have a longer range than electric trikes, allowing for longer rides and commutes. Maneuverability: Electric bikes offer more maneuverability and can easily navigate narrow streets, paths, and trails. Cost: Electric bikes can be less expensive than electric trikes, making them more accessible to those on a budget.

Stability: Electric bikes can be unstable, especially when traveling at high speeds, and require more balance and skill to safely operate. Cargo Capacity: Electric bikes typically have less cargo capacity than electric trikes, making it less ideal for running errands or carrying larger loads. Physical Fitness: Electric bikes require the rider to pedal to activate the motor, which may be challenging for some individuals with physical limitations. Safety: Electric bikes can be harder to see on the road because they are not as visually distinct as electric trikes. Comfort: Electric bikes can be less comfortable for riders because of the more aggressive riding position and smaller seats.

When considering purchasing an electric trike for adult in the USA, here are some additional factors to consider:

Size and weight capacity: Make sure to choose a trike that fits your height and weight, and that can support your weight plus any cargo you may want to carry. Terrain and riding conditions: Consider the type of terrain you will be riding on, such as hills or rough roads, and look for a trike with appropriate gearing and suspension to handle those conditions. Safety features: Look for an etrike with safety features like lights, reflectors, and a sturdy frame. Battery charging time: Determine how quickly the battery can be charged and how long it will take to fully charge. Storage and portability: Consider how easy it is to store and transport the trike, especially if you have limited space or will need to transport it in a vehicle. Reviews and customer feedback: Check online reviews and customer feedback to get an idea of the trike’s performance, durability, and overall satisfaction from other users.

Raleigh Tristar iE Electric Trike Review Part 1 – Pictures Specs

    13 Комментарии и мнения владельцев

The Raleigh Tristar iE step thru trike is in for testing and review!

Comfortably cruising around the neighborhood with enough cargo capacity for running errands is what the Tristar iE is all about.

This eTrike features a 350 watt mid drive motor and a 48V 8.7ah lithium-ion battery with the option to add a second battery for double the range!

The Raleigh Tristar iE is priced at 2,599 USD.

In this first part of the review you will get a detailed look at this bike with a BUNCH of pictures and the specifications.

Part 2 of the Raleigh Tristar iE review will give you info on the ride characteristics, results from the range test, pros, cons, and overall thoughts on this eTrike.

Alright, let’s take a closer look at the Raleigh Tristar iE!

The Raleigh Tristar iE is ready for cruising around the neighborhood and running errands.

The 21″ x 14.5″ x 8″ metal cargo basket on the back can carry a lot of cargo. This is handy for getting groceries, carrying a daily commuter bag, etc. On the left side there is a place where a flag can be attached for additional visibility out on the road.

The Raleigh 6061 aluminum step thru frame has been designed with relaxed geometry that makes it very comfortable to ride. The step thru design makes it very easy to get on and off this eTrike.

This is a closer look at the mid drive motor area with a gusset for reinforcement and solid looking aluminum welds.

The Tristar iE is a pretty unique eTrike because it features a mid drive motor which helps it climb steeper hills by leveraging the gears of the trike. This is a 350 watt Currie Electro-Drive motor that provides assist up to 12.5 mph is pedal assist level 1 and up to 15 mph in pedal assist levels 2, 3, and 4. Upright trikes generally have a lower speed to provide stability when cornering.

A stylish chain guard does a good job of keeping your pant legs clean and the pedals have a grippy rubber surface.

This is a Class 1 electric bike that is pedal assist only (no throttle) and provides assist up to 15 mph.

This is a view of the Sturmey Archer 3 speed internally geared rear hub that is mounted near the back of the Tristar iE. The main chain from the mid drive motor drives the cog on the left side (of this picture) of the internally geared rear hub and the cog just to the right transmits the leveraged gear back to the rear wheels axle.

This angle shows the chain from the Sturmey Archer 3 speed internally geared rear hub to the rear wheels axle. The right rear wheel of the trike provides the power while the left side spins freely.

Just above the drivetrain and below the cargo basket is where the 48V 8.7ah lithium-ion battery is located. Another unique feature of the Raleigh Tristar iE is the extra battery option for double the range! As you can see in this picture the stock Tristar iE comes equipped with all the battery connection hardware; just slide in the extra battery pack and go. The extra battery adds 499 to the 2,599 base price.

There is a handle on the back of the battery that drops down for battery removal after the battery has been unlocked with the supplied key. The battery weighs 7.3 pounds.

Here’s a look at the battery pack after it has been removed from the trike and the charger plugged in. The charger is about the size of a laptop charger and it takes 4 to 6 hours to fully charge the battery. The battery can be charged on or off the trike.

Let’s take a look at the handlebars of the Raleigh Tristar iE. They have a swept back and upright position for a comfortable ride style. The handlebar stem height can be varied to fit your riding preferences.

On the left side of the handlebar is the front brake lever and Currie Electro-Drive control pad. The button with spring on the brake lever is a brake lock button for keeping the trike in position when you park it. To lock the brakes, squeeze the brake lever, push the button, and then release the brake lever. To unlock the brakes squeeze the brake lever and release and the button will unlock.

The control pad varies the pedal assist with the or – buttons. The button below that cycles through the different information (speed, trip distance, odometer, range) on the display and the button to the right of that is the on/off button.

In the center of the handlebar is the LCD display that shows the current pedal assist level (there are 4 different levels), the current battery level, speed, trip distance, odometer, and estimated range. The estimated range is a cool feature because it will estimate your range remaining based on the current battery level and what pedal assist level you are in.

On the right side of the handlebars is the rear brake lever with the lock button and the Sturmey Archer 3 speed twist grip shifter.

On the front of the Raleigh Tristar iE is the 24″ wheel with steel fork and front steel fender.

A Promax V-brake is spec’ed on the front wheel.

The rear brake is a mechanical disc brake with 160 mm rotor that is attached to the Sturmey Archer 3 speed internally geared rear hub that then transmits the braking to the rear wheel via the chain and axle.

Here’s a look at the Innova 24″ x 1.95” front tire that has a good tread pattern for mostly road riding but it can also handle some off road conditions.

Slime tire sealant comes stock in all 3 wheels on the Raleigh Tristar iE. This is a very nice feature because the Slime sealant helps to prevent flats from thorns, glass, etc.

Here’s a look at the 20″ rear wheels with Innova tires (20″ x 1.95”) and steel fenders.

The rear steel fenders have built in reflectors for a clean look and additional visibility.

The Velo Comfort saddle has a wide profile with a center relief area for a comfortable ride.

I won’t be even thinking about buying one of these trikes…….Too expensive for one…….Too slow………I can buy a Recumbent trike from Utah Trikes for 200.00 less and get a better deal!!

I agree. I am planning on a world tour in 2018. This type of an electric trike is out of the question, but à recumbent tadpole, even à folding tadpole is à possibility.

I think you miss who this is for. An older woman or man who just wants a little exercise and might need help pedaling while going to the neighborhood store would be the target market for this trike. I helped put an electric hub motor on the front of a trike for a man in his eighties so he could get out and pedal a little or as much as he wanted while going to the store. This trike helps older people keep riding and provides transportation if they no longer drive a car.

Good point – this trike is not designed for the younger crowd like the recumbents are. I have ridden this trike and If anything, I think the 12.5 mph may be on the high side for it’s expected audience. This is the first center drive e-trike I have seen and as such it is a market leader.

Just looks like an old fashioned bike with old gears tin mud guards not moved with the times but for the the up to date price tag

And when tournee continue to Europe, we have tricycles already waiting for tourist. https://www.jorviktricycles.com/tricycles/electric.html

Expense?? People mention this about e-bikes all the time. A 2000 bike isnt expensive if you have looked around at the offerings in the pedal only arena that go way beyond it. Look for some of that price to go down as battery technology improves even better than it already is. I’m sure Raleigh did its marketing research to find out there is a customer base already waiting for this product. The first few commenters obviously arent in that group.

Great write up Pete! This is a much needed addition to a bike segment that has been historically underserved. I think there are many that will really enjoy this bike!

im glad to see a purpose built trike that considers the needs of people that require just such a machine. about to undergo a hip replacement revision i will be looking at scaling back my cycling activity. my eyes are drawn to my road bike, two mtn bikes and city bike as i know my needs and ability change. i appreciate ebike reports interest in all facits of the industry and to Raleigh for putting a product to market that will bridge the gap for many.

Great review as usual, Pete. Raleigh Electric changed its website’s domain, however, and your links on this and Part 2 now get “Error 404” messages. The new site is: https://raleighelectric.com/electric-bikes/utility/tristar-ie-e-trike
