Electric Scooter vs Electric Unicycle: Expectations vs. Reality. Unicycle electric scooter

Electric Scooter vs Electric Unicycle: Expectations vs. Reality

You’ve probably heard or even come across electric bikes and electric scooters by now. Both of these personal electric vehicles or rather PEVs (Personal Electric Vehicles) are often touted as the last mile vehicles that will allow commuters to travel short distances conveniently.

In cities, they offer a complete commuting alternative to public transport. But one PEV, you might not have heard of yet, is the electric unicycle or the EU.

Electric Scooters Buying Guide

The Electric Unicycles are odd-looking electric vehicles consisting of a single wheel that a rider straddles. Like a hoverboard or Segway, they are operated through self-balance.

Though the Electric Unicycles are more like toys, they offer a serious transportation alternative. But how do they compare to the electric scooters? Which between the two is better?

In our electric scooter vs electric unicycle article below, we will compare between these two means of transportation and see what alternative is probably best for you.

However, we will only compare the entry-level models, as probably those who need the high-end models most likely already know what they need.

Electric Scooters at a Glance

Electric scooters are exactly what they sound like; they’re popular PEV, and you’ve probably come across them.

The e-scooters are basically motorized versions of a scooter, and they come with an additional electric motor, controller, and battery for power.

These PEVs are designed with a handle for control and a large deck in the center on which the rider stands.

Though the electric scooter concept isn’t new, it didn’t gain popularity until recent years; in the past, there wasn’t the need for scooters as there was less traffic, and the cities weren’t crowded as they’re today.

Electric Unicycle at a Glance

The electric unicycles, on the other hand, are a rare sight and not as popular as the electric scooters or any other PEV.

The electric unicycles are a bit more futuristic; they come with a single wheel with laps on either side upon which the rider stands.

To control the an Electric Unicycle, you need to lean either forward or backward to accelerate or decelerate.

As we had mentioned in the introduction, the EUs are much more like a Segway, except they’re way cheaper and cooler.

Comparing Electric Scooters and Electric Unicycles

Riding Experience

The riding experience on both models is vastly different for one obvious reason-the handlebars.

The scooter has handlebars, which, like most moving objects, gives better control, better stability, and better balancing, even on the bumps and dips on the road.

The electric unicycle, on the other hand, lacks handlebars, and the riders must rely entirely on using their body weight to steer.

All of this means the unicycle has a far steeper learning curve than the scooters.

See, to use a scooter, you simply have to hop onto it and start riding. If you can control the scooter when in motion, you can as well simply hop off the scooter to regain control or even come to an abrupt stop.

The same can’t be said for the unicycles.

The idea of taking both feet off the ground without having to hold onto something is unusual and will take time to get used to.

And as such, it alienates most people who struggle to balance or feel uncomfortable with such stunts.

Another difference between these two models is how easy it’s to hold balance.

We can all agree that with unicycles, it’s a challenge to keep balance, considering that you’ve nothing to hold onto.

With an electric bike, balance is easier to come by since both feet are anchored on the same platform, and you’ve something to hold onto.

Mobility and Practicality

Both of these PEVs are small, lightweight, and practical.

However, unicycles are 20% less heavy than the electric scooters, and while the difference is not huge, it means a lot if you’ve to carry the scooter for long distances.

On average, a unicycle weighs 15 pounds, while a scooter weighs anywhere between 20 to 25 pounds.

Though it’s possible to fold the scooters for storage, they still might prove harder to carry.

The unicycles, on the other hand, are quite minimalists, don’t need folding, and their circular shape saves on space.

When in use, the reverse is true; scooters have greater mobility. The balance offered by scooters makes it easier to tackle the corners, and the braking is more refined.

We shall look at these elements in the safety section.

The design difference plays a crucial role in the overall safety element.

electric, scooter, unicycle, expectations, reality

Of course, like any other PEV, there’s a safety risk involved, and so, you should always be careful with either.

The electric scooter, however, is a safer option than the unicycle because it features handlebars that help you keep balance, and allow you to take sharp corners with ease.

Electric Scooters Leading To Injuries According To New Study Read

The handlebars also feature brakes, which makes it easier to slow and stop in an emergency.

Generally, the increased control of electric bikes makes it easier to avoid potholes and avoid collisions easily.

This is as opposed to the electric unicycles safety perspective it requires you to tilt your body either forward or backward to achieve control.

Electric Scooter Advantages and Disadvantages – Should You Get One and Are They Worth it?

To brake, for instance, you need to lean back, and because of the inertia, it can prove quite challenging, and in most cases, you’ll realize that this form of braking is not so effective.

While some of the riders might prefer this form of traditional braking, it’s without a doubt a less safe method of braking.

Again, with the unicycles, there’s a considerable lack of sideways maneuverability, which makes taking the sharp corners a challenging feat.

This category is a bit of a tossup, especially when you consider the speed and range.

The actual differences in the speed and range depend on the type of PEV you have.

For instance, it’s possible to find varying performance even in between the individual models.

Generally, however, scooters seem to have the upper hand in this category.

The average scooter speed, for instance, is between 15-20 mph, a contrast to the 8-15mph on the electric unicycles, though, as we had mentioned, it’s still possible to find unicycles capable of doing 20 mph.

A similar scenario plays in the range: the unicycles have a lower range than that of the electric scooters. Either way, when comparing from a “last-mile” of view, both of them offer a decent range.

The acquisition cost for both models is comparable.

However, unicycles are a tad less costly than the scooters, and this is because of the smaller battery.

As you may already know, the battery normally takes up a large percentage of the cost.

On average, a unicycle goes anywhere between 250-300, but the quality ones go up from 400.

Again, when you look at the maintenance costs, the unicycles consume less energy as they’re lighter than their equivalent electric scooters.

Even so, the electricity consumption is still insignificant.

Who is the Electric Scooter for?

Electric scooters are an ideal option for those new to the PEVs.

They’re much safer and have a less steep learning curve compared to the electric unicycles.

They also have an extended range and so an ideal option for commuting for long distances.

Their control and balance mechanism are also better, and so, they’re easier to use even in the crowded spots, without the risk of collisions or accidents.

Who is the Electric Unicycle For?

I like the unicycle for their portability.

With these PEVs, it’s easier to ride almost anywhere, and you can take them anywhere with you. For instance, they’ll easily fit into your shopping cart, and you can even go with them into a restaurant.

Another thing is they’re more practical in the sense that they’ve larger pneumatic wheels, as opposed to the smaller wheels, so you can go through the light to medium trails with ease.

Finally, unicycles have legal access to anywhere that a bicycle can go.

The biggest drawback of these unicycles is the steep learning curve.

Between Electric Scooter and Electric Unicycle: What to Buy?

Well, I would say both models have their strong points and their drawbacks.

Generally, however, the scooters are suitable for the flat and tarmacked terrain, but if you need to take your adventure to the rugged terrain, a unicycle might be a great option.

Still, there’re plenty of other factors to consider, and the suitability of either model will depend on the purpose of a PEV, your terrain, range, and much more.

Electric Scooter Vs Electric Unicycle | Which One Is Better?

The growing popularity of electric vehicles has resulted in the introduction of a wide range of models and designs. In many places throughout the world, electric scooters and electric bikes are already commonplace.

As more people seek environmentally friendly modes of transportation, the market is becoming more diverse. The electric unicycle is also a part of the electric movement, with a basic style that sets it apart.

Here before we go with the comparison between the Electric Scooters and Electric Unicycle, let us discuss both in short.

Electric Scooters

Whether it’s for going to work, moving to the store, or simply having fun you will always be looking for some personal vehicle, which will help you to ride easily. For your this demand there are Electric Scooters available on the market. When it’s too far to walk yet too short to drive, these contemporary modes of transportation are ideal. They’re fast and silent, and they’re also much more portable than bikes.

Electric Scooters are available with various features in the market according to the need for customers. They vary in speed, range, design, capacity of carrying weight and some other features.

Electric Unicycles

Electric unicycles (EUCs) are the latest addition to the world of portable battery-powered vehicles such as electric scooters, hoverboards, and electric skateboards. Electric unicycles are one-wheeled vehicles with a motor, battery, and other electrical components. The rider stands between two pedals, one on each side of the wheel. Padded seats are available on certain unicycles, making long rides more pleasant.

Electric unicycles, unlike electric skateboards, do not have a remote control. We have discussed the Electric Scooters and Electric Unicycles individually. Based on their speed, range and charging time. From this we get to know that they vary in design but are similar in their work. Providing the riders a wonderful ride is the ultimate aim of these electric boards.

Now, let us compare both Electric Unicycle and Electric Scooters on different aspects.

Electric Scooters and Electric Unicycle difference based on Design

It is clear that the designs of both the vehicles are different from each other. Electric Scooters have the handlebars for support whereas electric unicycles don’t. Due to the design and handlebars that make navigating considerably easier, electric scooters can be classified as stable and secure vehicles. On the other hand riders on electric unicycles must maintain a decent balance while accelerating and decelerating by leaning forward and backward.

Even though electric unicycles have the same technological elements as other electric vehicles (they have an electric motor, controller, and battery), they demand more expertise and attention while driving.

Electric Unicycles are totally based on Self-balancing, whereas Electric scooters have balancing wheels which help riders to ride easily. The design of Electric Unicycles is more attractive to the riders than of Electric Scooters.

Based on Rides

When it comes to riding, both electric vehicles, having the linked riding experience and safety features. The electric scooter carries handlebars, and two wheels which all contribute to a steady and safe ride. The electric scooter has better control over the vehicle and a more developed brake system.

On the other hand the Electric Unicycle carries one wheel and it totally depends on the concept of self balancing, if you are perfect at balancing then it will be easy for you to ride in an electric unicycle.

You may enjoy the rides in both the vehicles but riding in an electric unicycle is more stylish then in electric scooters. As some people buy these vehicles only for fun. But if you are willing to buy these vehicles for some serious purpose, then you definitely prefer the comfortable.

It may be possible for you to choose electric scooters rather than electric unicycles, when you don’t know the technique of self-balancing.

If you are perfect in self-balancing concept then the ride in an electric unicycle is more fun for you and enjoyable also.

Naturally, you must pay close attention to the vehicle you are travelling in on your own to avoid any unforeseen irregularities or changes on the road.

Based on Range and Speed

Both vehicles are more than capable of transporting a person over short distances, but scooters often have a range and speed advantage over unicycles. This range and speed might vary greatly amongst cars, therefore this isn’t a hard and fast rule.

The speed of an electric scooter or unicycle is determined by the model you purchase. Some models can reach speeds of up to 15mph (24kph), while others can reach speeds of over 50mph (80kph).

The peak speed obtained is almost unimportant because reaching such speeds consistently within a city is difficult. The roads are uneven, the paths twist and swirl. It’s wonderful to know that your car has a lot of power – even if you only get to use it once in a while.

Balance matters more

The basic difference between these two vehicles is the ability to maintain balance. We can all agree that riding an electric unicycle is more difficult than riding an electric scooter.

It may appear simpler to maintain your balance on a unicycle once you’ve learned to ride one. But it’s congested locations that scare, where you have to steer quickly and brake quickly if necessary. When you brake without handles, your entire body goes forward. To offset that forward movement, you’ll need to modify your position.

Electric scooters and electric unicycles are pretty close in terms of price. It all depends on the type of car you desire, as well as the power, design, range, and other features you want.

Unicycles can be a lot of fun for certain people, but electric scooters provide a more full experience for almost everyone. Their design allows for a simple (and enjoyable) riding experience.

Merits and Demerits of Electric Unicycle and Electric Scooters

  • Electric Unicycles are found less heavy than Electric Scooters.
  • Electric Scooters are folded easily but are quite heavy to carry, while on other hand Unicycles are very small and can be carried easily.
  • Range and Speed of both the electric vehicles are approximately the same.

Buyers Guide for Electric Scooters

While doing the comparison between the electric scooter and electric unicycle you must have an idea about the buying aspects for these electric vehicles which will help you to sort the things more properly. So, here we come up with one by one discussion of buying electric vehicles. Let us start with Electric Scooters.

When looking for the electric scooters to buy, you must look into some important factors before the selection and that are-

  • The cost
  • The Speed
  • The Range
  • The Quality of Ride and more.Let’s talk about these in detail

The Cost

When you are looking for an electric scooter then you must be aware of your budget. Your buying must require your budget friendly environment. You must select the Electric scooter that has the entire required feature and is according to your budget.

The Speed

Speed demon, how fast do you want to go? When answering this question, make sure to choose a scooter that can keep up with you, but also consider weather conditions and safety. Most electric scooters have a top speed of roughly 20 mph, but you may not need to go that fast. The Model One’s top speed is 17 mph.

The Range

The amount of time it takes to charge an e-scooter is determined by its battery life. If you’re commuting long miles on your electric scooter, you’ll want to make sure that a full charge will at least get you there.

You should also consider how long your scooter takes to charge and how portable the battery pack is. The Unagi Model One has a range of 15.5 miles and charges in approximately 4–5 hours.

Choose an e-scooter with a stylish style. The scooter, like the Unagi Model One, has everything encapsulated in the handlebar, unlike some scooters that have messy wiring.

electric, scooter, unicycle, expectations, reality

The Unagi Model One’s folding shape makes it easy to transport and store, and all of the functions are right at your fingertips. You may also change the colours of your scooter to match your particular preferences.

Not all e-scooters come with a reliable guarantee, and buying directly from a foreign nation should be avoided at all costs. On Amazon, there are also a lot of inexpensive scooters that don’t come with a warranty to safeguard your investment. Electric scooters from Unagi, on the other hand, have a one-year warranty. And if there is a problem with the scooter during the first three months, we will replace it with a fresh new one.

Buyers Guide for Electric Unicycles

Here we are with the buying guide for the electric unicycle. Before the selection of the electric unicycle

Electric unicycles have the highest learning curve when compared to other electric rideables. While you can go around on a “hoverboard” or standard Segway in under an hour, it may take a day or two of trial and error before you feel comfortable on one of these.

A safety tether will save your unicycle from a scratch-inducing tumble if you have to step off while learning to ride; you’ll also get a safety tether that will allow you to rescue your unicycle from a scratch-inducing tumble if you have to step off while learning to ride.

Even when you’ve mastered riding, you should always wear at least a helmet. These unicycles can reach high speeds, enough to cause catastrophic harm in the event of a fall.

Features that ensure safety

Electric unicycles are generally considered to be safe. These self-balancing devices, like any other motorised vehicle, pose inherent concerns. The quicker you go, the more difficult it will be to catch your breath. As a result, ride at a speed at which you’re willing to tumble.

Many current Electric Unicycles have safety features such as a low battery indication and sudden stop protection. Instead of suddenly halting, this slows down the speed until totally shutting down.

The distance an electric unicycle can ride is determined by your body weight, driving style, road conditions, and sometimes even the weather. The majority of entry-level unicycles have a range of 15-20 miles. Electric Unicycles, on the other hand, may travel up to 40 kilometres on a single charge.

Smaller Electric Unicycles contain a 130-watt battery, which is ideal for toddlers, novices, or when you only need to go a short distance. Higher speeds and range are possible with a high-powered battery that can deliver 700-800 watts.

So, what will you do with your electric scooter? If you plan to use it on a regular basis, a higher-powered electric unicycle is recommended; however, if you simply want to learn and travel short distances, a lower-powered electric unicycle will suffice.

Wattage of the motor

The motor watts stated by the manufacturer indicate how much continuous power the motor can handle without overheating. Short-term peaks that are substantially greater than the motor watt rating provided by EUC manufacturers are possible.

Although the mentioned motor watts are a decent estimate of how much power your EUC will have, they aren’t the sole deciding element. The sustained power rating does not take into account how much power the control board can manage.

It’s also crucial to have the right battery size in order to generate enough current. As a result, a motor rated for 2200 watts with a tiny battery pack and a poor control board will not perform as well as a motor rated for 2000 watts with a large battery and a reliable control board.

However, the higher the motor watt value, the more power the EUC will have and the faster it will be able to operate.

Additional Features

Additional features like Bluetooth connectivity, LED lights, and waterproofing also play an important role in the selection of the Electric Unicycle in today’s era. These are some features which become all common like others.

Bluetooth connectivity is necessary in the electric unicycle as it indicates the newness of the Electric unicycle and also it will help you with the new comfort. Connection with mobile apps is also available on some of the brands of Electric unicycle. Go ahead with this feature also while purchasing the EUCs.

LED lights are one of the most common things which everyone looks for. It helps you in riding in a proper manner. Also it highlights the advanced feature of your electric unicycle.

Final Thoughts

Electric scooters are simple to ride and provide a convenient way to go about town. On the other hand, Electric unicycles are more fun, although the learning time is a little higher. Electric unicycles can only be used as last-mile transportation, whereas electric scooters may be utilized for the entire journey.

The range, speed, and safety are the key benefits of electric scooters over electric unicycles.

Electric unicycle

Electric unicycle is a type of universal electric urban transport. This will allow you to move not only along the bike path, but also along the sidewalk, the path in the park. You can easily take it by public transport. Keeping a scooter is easy; it does not take up space at all. It is easy to carry. You will quickly learn how to ride and appreciate its benefits.

What is an electric unicycle?

In structure is a self-balancing one wheel scooter with two running boards located on both sides. Inside the monowheel are gyroscopes, sensors, accelerometers, a battery and an motor with a power of 250-2000 watts. The pedals automatically balance back and forth. Balancing left and right is performed by the rider and is controlled by tilting the body and turning the entire device left and right with his feet.

Electric monowheel in a plastic case, has a handle for carrying. On the top panel are on / off button, battery indicator and charging connector. The steps add up to store and transfer the device. An electric monowheel has neither a rear nor a front side, the operation of device is completely symmetrical.

Device: motor, battery, brakes

Most scooter single wheels are self-balancing when moving only in the driving direction (single axis). During the movement, lateral stability is provided by raider. All similar devices use torque control gyroscopes, auxiliary pendulums, accelerometers.

When the power is on, electronic gyroscopes using accelerometers begin to change the moment of engine power so that the wheel housing, tilted by the pilot through the pedals, restores the horizontal position. Longitudinal equilibrium is achieved by adjusting the device to the center of gravity of raider and the scooter itself with one wheel.

Dynamic lateral balance provides centrifugal turning forces that occur when the wheel is tilted to the sides. Thus, the automatic unicycle is controlled by tilting your body forward, backward and sideways. When fully stopped, pilot of device must maintain balance, like on a motorcycle or bicycle, with one foot on the asphalt.

Benefits of Using

The scooter single wheel runs on batteries and has many advantages over other types of vehicles. Here are the most obvious:

  • You can move quickly and easily. Means speed, mobility, maneuverability, compactness, freedom of action.
  • A motorized unicycle is large compared to scooters or skateboards, and since the tire is inflatable, you can jump over an obstacle.
  • You do not need to think about parking, you can easily take an scooter single wheel with you in public transport or in buildings.
  • You do not think about fuel, since it is charged from any electrical outlet, and the time to fully charge the battery is only about 3-4 hours.
  • This is an device that is environmentally friendly and does not pollute the air with harmful exhausts.
  • The design of motorized unicycle is stable and prevents falls, even if you lose balance, it is easy to jump and stay on your feet.

Another advantage is the fact that it does not require a driver’s license or registration with the traffic police.

How fast can you learn to ride a unicycle?

Training takes from 15 minutes to an hour. First try to put your foot on footboard and shake it. You will feel how it moves and how an electric monowheel reacts to it. Try moving the one wheel scooter back and forth while standing on one leg on the sidewalk. Then stand on steps with two legs and hold on to something.

Try moving forward by tilting your body. At first you will feel that it is unreliable. The smoother you are, the better it will be to listen to an electric unicycle. See where you want to go, and then you just shift your center of gravity a bit in that direction, and you start moving there.

This is a little scary, but not too much. The more relaxed you are, the better. If in doubt, catching the balance will be more difficult. You can go cycling the same day.

Some believe that using an airwheel one wheeled electric skateboard requires wearing protective equipment for roller skates, because of the danger of falls. In Russia, riding on this device is equated to a pedestrian.

The danger of riding a monowheel is a collision with obstacles: in this case, the wheel decelerates sharply and does not keep pace with rider who deviates forward by inertia, which makes it fall.

When leaving the recess, some one wheel scooter stop and drop pilot due to lack of engine power. From this point of view, the most powerful models are the safest.
