The ES4 is the heaviest out of all four versions to date but not by much. The other three models weighed 25, 26, and 28 pounds each while the ES4 weighs around 30 pounds. It’s a marginal difference and you really can’t feel that extra couple of pounds, especially when riding the scooter.
The age group Segway recommends for using the ES4 is from 14 to 60 years old. It’s a powerful and relatively fast device so it is suggested that small children and the elderly do not operate this scooter for their own safety.
The weight limit is roughly 220 pounds just like all models in the Segway ES series. The maximum incline angle of the ES4 has also been increased from 10 degrees to 15. It can now ride up steeper slopes with little issue no matter what speed you’re hitting.
The two biggest things that separate the ES4 from its predecessors are power and battery life. Like the ES3, there are actually two batteries. One is internal and the other is external. The external battery can be equipped or disconnected at your leisure and discretion. The second battery extends the distance you can get per journey.
As for power, the ES4 has some impressive stats. It is capable of going up to 19 miles per hour whereas the ES2 and ES3 could only reach 15.5mph. This should satisfy anyone who likes to get to where they’re going in a rush or those who just like the thrill of speed. The max range stats are even more astonishing thanks to the extra battery. With both batteries connected, you can go 28 miles per charge (halved when only using the internal source).
Build Quality and Comfortable
The overall physical design of the ES4 is quite good. The stand where your feet are placed seems to be unchanged from prior models but features a mesh pattern for grip. It’s very easy to keep balance while moving even when wearing only your socks (though wearing footwear is always recommended).
The scooter folds up quite easily and nicely. While a little heavy, you can take it with you into virtually any vehicle whenever necessary. The components used in the inner gears feel and sound tough and reliable.
The ES4 comes in two colors: dark gray and silver gray. We prefer the look of silver but if you do scratch it the blemishes will be more noticeable. They’re both basic colors and aren’t too flashy but they look fine all at once too. They’re simple yet clean looking.
While models like this will be subject to wear and tear over time, you don’t need to worry about it losing its functionality. The ES4 is a strong scooter and should still function for many years.
Safety
Segway is a company known for taking safety precautions very seriously. This is apparent once we take into account some of the new features that were added to the ES4.
One of those additions is the rear light. This was also present in the ES3 but not the first two models. If you ever plan on using your scooter after dark, then something like this extra backlight is arguably a must-have. Being visible is very important so that drivers or cyclists can see you from several feet away. The rear light is a Smart addition and it really gives you good peace of mind as you’re riding in the evening.
Both ends of the scooter are fitted with shock-absorbent materials. This means that in the event you heavily bump into something, the ES4 will not rattle you as hard. The machine stays relatively firm thanks to both this feature and the fact that it weighs a nice 30 pounds.
The one negative we have to say is that the ES4’s riding experience suffers on a variety of terrain. Smooth roads and sidewalks work perfectly but it doesn’t handle bumps or cracks as well as we’d like. One should be on the lookout for such obstacles in the first place but it would still be nice if Segway could have made the ride a little smoother in such cases.
Wheels
Surprisingly, the tires are one of the least impressive things about the ES4. Segway has a history of modifying wheels during revisions to their Segway line of scooters, so the fact that ES4 wheels are identical to the rest of the ES line was a little bit disappointing.
They’re still solid wheels, the front being 8 inches and the back is 7.5 inches. They work great on the surfaces they’re meant to ride on. Just make sure to stay away from most other kinds of ground. The ES4 loses a lot of its acceleration and traction on dirt, sand, grass, and puddles. Owners of this scooter would usually just stick to roads and sidewalks anyway but wheels are arguably the most important component of any electric vehicle. It’s still a shame they received no change in this new model.
Steering is something that Segway has always had nailed down and the ES4 is no exception here. Turning corners at either 5mph or 18mph is seamless and effortless. You may want to do some practice if this is your first electric scooter but the learning curve is quite minor.
Extra Features
The second external battery is arguably the best feature the ES4 has. While we already covered it in previous sections, it deserves to be brought up again. One of the biggest conveniences the ES4 offers you is the ability to swap batteries, so to speak. You can use the internal battery while the external is charging at home, or you can use a fully charged external if the internal is dead. It really opens up some options to you if you’re in a hurry or if you forgot to plug one of them in.
In typical Segway fashion, the ES4 has Bluetooth functionality and can wirelessly connect to your smartphone. That’s right, the Segway ES4 has its own app. With this tool, you can customize LED lights, use the anti-theft function and its alarm, and perform vehicle diagnostics. It’s outside-the-box stuff like this that really makes Segway’s work so special. They might seem like gimmicks but they add a lot more value than one might expect.
The cruise control feature is something we weren’t expecting to be using as much as we did but it’s really handy. Feeling the breeze on your face while cruising at around 12mph is such a sweet spot for the comfort factor. It’s a nice addition that can make your ride even cozier.

The Segway ES4 electric scooter is a great device but it just falls a little short in too many areas to be considered a marvel.
The second battery is a great addition and the max distances and speeds you can get are impressive. Unfortunately, there are just a few glaring omissions in the updates that might make this scooter seem a little overpriced. Today I am going to show you everything you need to know about the Segway Ninebot ES4 electric kick scooter which I must say it’s a perfect vehicle for shorter commutes around the city.

What Do You Need to Consider Before Buying an Electric Scooter?
I found while reviewing different scooters, there are a few criteria that deemed most important to deciding whether or not a scooter was worth purchasing.
Safety – Safety is my top priority when looking at scooters. There have been quite a few instances popping up lately regarding scooter accidents, so I really look for scooters that would keep me safe. I also wanted a scooter that had anti-theft prevention.
Durability – There is no point in buying a scooter that will wear out under daily use, so I really take the durability into question. I love an electric scooter that could stand the daily commute to work and errand running without experiencing high wear and tear.
Battery life – Long battery life is also something I concern. Having to charge a scooter every day is just not practical, so I want one that would last the better part of a week. A shorter charging cycle is also important.
Is Segway Ninebot Kick Scooter ES4 Worth The Money?
I’ve studied at a few different components of the Segway Ninebot Kick scooter ES4, to make sure it held up to the standards in terms of safety and durability under testing.
Rang Speed
I love how fast the Segway Ninebot ES4 got when I turned on sport mode. This scooter has a normal mode for everyday riding, but when I wanted to kick it up a notch, the sport mode allowed me to get up to almost 19 miles per hour, or 30km per hour.
I do find that going downhill, the scooter could go slightly faster, but I wouldn’t recommend trying to hit record-breaking speeds, as it started to feel slightly unstable. On steeper terrain going uphill, the scooter could not hit 19 miles; however, it did not go slow by any means.
The range of the ES4 impressed me as the scooter goes up to 28 miles, or 45 kilometers, before it needs to be recharged. I found it last all week without needing to charge up again for shorter distances needing to be traveled daily.
The Segway Ninebot ES4 also had one of the higher inclines ranges I encountered when reviewing electric scooters, though it did start to fail past 15 degrees. In a city with a lot of hills, this may not be the best scooter for you.
Battery Charging
The Segway Ninebot ES4 is fitted with dual 800w, lithium-ion batteries, which are internal and external. Compared to some, this allows the scooter to go much longer and further than earlier models.
The maximum charging time is longer compared to other scooters. At 7 hour maximum charging time, it’s a little long for on the fly charging, but you get a full charge overnight.
The battery protection is a great feature that protects the scooter from overheating and short-circuiting, keeping it safe to charge indoors and without supervision. I feel comfortable charging it at night or when away.
Safety
The mechanical and electrical braking system of the Segway ES4 allowed for fast braking, even at higher speeds. This is probably the feature I am most impressed with as it definitely feels safer than some others I’ve used.
The brakes have the ability to stop within 13 inches when going 12 miles an hour. It did take a little longer to stop when going faster, but being able to stop shortly is a necessary feature in traffic.
The scooter is also fitted with a slip-resistant surface that allows you to feel secure when standing on it. I like the LED rear and front lights. The front lights were bright enough to allow me to see at night, even when riding at higher speeds. The rear lights I found to be great to let others know that I was there if coming up from behind.
Durability
I find the Segway Ninebot ES4 to be fairly durable in terms of normal wear and tear and collision. The thick tires do well on the pavement and do not seem to face much wear, even after a good amount of use.
The ES4 is built using high-strength, lightweight aerospace-grade aluminum alloy. Meaning it holds up against a lot. It seemed to hold up against damage that occurs in cities, such as bikes falling onto it.
The scooter weighs in at 39.7 pounds, making it lightweight enough to transport it when you are not riding the scooter. Those who regularly need to carry the scooter though may find it cumbersome, as while it does great for short distances, it did start to get heavy after a while.
The scooter also does require maintenance, like any other machine. After a while, the wheels starting to stick and the springs making a squeaky sound. After doing a bit of research, I’ve applied a 20,000 CST silicone oil, which seemed to do the job well.
Build Quality
The Segway Ninebot ES4 has a lot of features that you might be interested in.
- Wheels: The wheels on the ES4 are large, solid tires that save on maintenance time. They hold up for a long time, and when needing to be replaced, you can easily find replacements from Segway.
- Tires: The tires are also easy to inflate if they start getting low on air. All I have to do is plug in the vacuum!
- Suspension System: This scooter’s suspension system is great for balance and comfort. It has front and rear wheel shock absorption that allows for a smoother ride, even at its high speeds.
- Lights: It comes with both rear and front LED lights, that allow you to see and be seen at night. The light colors are also customizable, which was a fun added feature that added to my personal style. I did find the front light to not always be light enough for night riding.
- Extra Features: I really enjoy that the scooter is Bluetooth capable which connects to an app for anti-theft features and light customization. It limits the buttons on the scooter, allowing for a sleek design.
- Handle Bar: The ES4 is equipped with a textured, anti-slip handle, which helped me to maintain grip and control while riding it.
- Anti Theft: The Bluetooth feature allows you to download an app to your phone for mobile app connectivity. I love this feature as it gives me peace of mind while I left the scooter unattended for short periods of time.
The app provides additional security and locks the scooter so it can’t be stolen. It also applies firmware updates to the scooter, to keep the electrical system up to date.
The only issue I found with this was you couldn’t leave it unattended for a long period of time. Someone with experience of stealing scooters would have been able to easily get around the security measures.
Warranty
Segway has a decent warranty program, something I appreciate seeing, especially with a higher-end product like the ES4. They have a warranty that goes up to a year, depending on the part.
When researching the ES4 initially, I did find that talking to customer service could be difficult, but Segway did get back to their customers in the end.
Riding experience
I thoroughly enjoy riding the Segway Ninebot ES4 Kickscooter. Not only did it have great features that make riding a scooter luxurious, but it also had features that made it fun.

The only downside though is while the scooter is long enough to hold two people, the 220-pound weight limit didn’t really make this an option as it was advertised. I found the ES4 scooter capable of carrying two adults, but it definitely went much slower than normal.
The dual shocks made for a comfortable ride as well and the bigger tires made going over cracks and small potholes nothing. The ES4 took these fantastically and made it an impressively smooth ride.
When it hit somewhat bigger obstacles, it bottomed out, testing the durability and the suspension. It seemed to do its job very well as the scooter was left with no marks both times and the suspension seemed to work the same after.
The E-brake on the scooter did take a couple of minutes to get used to, as it did jerk, but after a bit, I agreed that it works really well.
Both downhill and uphill capability are impressive on the Segway Ninebot ES4 Kickstarter scooter as well. I drove the ES4 up hills of 15 degrees before noticing a major lag on power.

I found while reviewing the scooter, many people had similar questions about the Segway Ninebot ES4, that are not always advertised. I’ve collected some QAs so you don’t need to worry.
Is the Ninebot ES4 waterproof? Can you ride it in the rain?
This scooter is water-resistant, not waterproof. It is rated at IP54 for water resistance. It holds up against puddle splashes and light rain just fine. The larger tires help grip the sidewalk even when they are slick.
This scooter should not be used if it is raining heavily, nor should it be left out in the rain. I don’t find that to be a big deterring factor though. After all, who really wants to ride a scooter in a downpour?
Can you take it off the pavement?
While the Ninebot ES4 can go all around the city on cobblestones, pavement, concrete, and asphalt, this scooter is not an all-terrain scooter. With the tire tread and the suspension on the scooter, I would not recommend this one if you are looking for a scooter to go on dirt paths. I suggest looking elsewhere if this is a deal-breaker as the ES4 is not able to handle them.
Is the Segway Ninebot ES4 Foldable?
The Ninebot ES4 is not only able to fold, but it is also extremely easy to do so. It has a one-click folding system that is incredibly easy to use. It folds down fairly small, making it simple to carry on to the bus or fit in the trunk of a car.
What is the difference between the ES1 and ES2?
Two other models I’ve ever known were the Segway ES1 and ES2. Both had a significantly shorter range than the ES4, at 15.5 miles before needed charged. They both come at a lower price point than the ES4, and they have fewer features.
The ES1 has a maximum speed of 12.4 miles per hour. The ES2 has a maximum speed of 15.5 miles per hour. Compared to the ES4’s 18.6mph, both go significantly slower. They also both stop at an incline of 10, compared to the ES4 which goes up to 15.

I ended up loving the Segway Ninebot ES4 Kickscooter. I found it to be safe and fun at the same time. Add that to great battery life and a durable frame, and I found myself very impressed with the ES4. I also appreciated the extra features the ES4 comes with, and found the scooter to be a good option for those looking for a short commuting scooter.

Segway is a highly ranked brand in e-scooter circles. The company is also well known for the manufacture of a wide variety of electric vehicles. for personal and commercial purposes. Now they’re probably most known for the Segway Ninebot S hands-free scooter. But they also have a traditional electric kick-scooter.
Introducing the Segway Ninebot ES4
The Segway brand is known for products that can go faster and further, and the Segway Ninebot ES4 is no different. As the name suggests, this e-scooter is the 4th instalment in Segway’s ES series.
So is this the perfected version of the original? You could say that. Segway has definitely made some improvements, including extended range, faster max-speed, and longer battery life.
As Segway arguably introduced the world the self-balancing scooter, it’s a company that’s always looking to stay ahead of the curve. Let’s see if the Segway Ninebot ES4 is as good as we expect from Segway.

Design and Portability
Even if you are not an expert in design, you can trust Segway. They have years of experience in building e-scooters. They have got the construction, safety, and comfort right. The ES4 is a sleek electric scooter that not only looks good but is well-built too.
Like other scooters on the market, it’s portable. it folds in half where the handlebar meets the deck, making it easy to carry. It weighs 14 kg (31 lb), which is slightly heavier than other e-scooters in the series. So beware of this before purchasing. It’s fine for carrying short distances, but you wouldn’t want to carry it too far.
Its solid chassis can carry a maximum weight of 100 kg (220 lb), which is slightly above the market average for similar products.
Speed, Distance, and Battery
Speed, range, and battery quality are big factors in purchasing an electric scooter. The Ninebot ES4 performs pretty well on all three.
Its motor boasts an impressive 800 Watt peak power output and a nominal power output of 300 Watts. This translates into a max-speed of 30 kph (19 mph).
Interestingly, the Ninebot ES4 has two batteries. one built-in battery and one that’s removable.
The motor and dual batteries combine to offer a max-distance of 45 km (28 miles) on a single charge.
Additionally, the scooter has a power-saver mode that limits the max-speed so that the scooter can last longer and go further.
Though inclines are an uphill battle (excuse the pun!) for most scooters, the ES4 can scale a slope of up to 15 degrees while maintaining a decent speed.
The Brake System
The Ninebot ES4 has two brake systems: the electrical front brake controlled from the left side of the handlebar and the mechanical brake on the back wheel. The mechanical brake is activated by pressing your foot down on the rear wheel’s mudguard.
Certification and Safety
Further strengthening their credentials as a leading manufacturer of electric vehicles is the UL 2272 certification. By adhering to the UL safety standard, Segway assures its users only the best battery and electric systems have been used in the ES4 scooters and that they have undergone rigorous inspection and quality testing.
Obviously, safety features are important on electric scooters. And now that they’re sharing space with pedestrians and cars more and more, lights are necessary. and in some countries, required by law.
There are few scooters with more lights than the ES4. It comes with a front light, rear sidelights and a brake light. And if this wasn’t enough there is a customisable light that illuminates the underside of the scooter’s deck.
Bluetooth and App
Segway have an application for smartphones that allows you to connect to the scooter via Bluetooth. Available on all major app stores, the Segway app comes with some cool features.
The app displays ride statistics such as speed, battery life, distance travelled, etc. But, there is more, like the cruise control feature that can lock the speed, the anti-theft alarm and lock.
The app also allows you to perform vehicle diagnosis, switch on/off the lights, and change the colour of the under-deck light.
Riding experience
The handlebar offers a comfortable grip and has user-friendly controls. In fact, there are just two buttons, There is one lever on either side. the left one activates the electronic brake and the right one is the accelerator.
The central LED display keeps you up to date on the scooter’s speed, battery status and speed mode while riding.
The Segway ES4 thrives on smooth surfaces. as you’d expect. but doesn’t perform badly on uneven paths or roadways either. It can even handle long grass.
The front and rear suspension offer added support to tackle those less than perfect areas.
Keep in mind that Segway created the ES4 as an electric scooter for urban areas, and so don’t expect perfect performance on rough terrain. But as a commuting scooter, it offers a very smooth ride with good performance.
Final Thoughts
The Segway Ninebot ES4 is more expensive than other electric scooters on the market, but we can see why. If you’re willing to spend the money, you won’t be disappointed.
The scooter’s stand-out feature is its two batteries. This allows for a range of a whopping 45 km (28 miles). So if you’re travelling further or just don’t want to worry about charging the scooter as often, it’s worth the investment.
The Segway Ninebot ES4 is a high-quality electric scooter with a modern design, long-range, good top speed, and a brand name that justifies the high price tag. It deserves an overall rating of 8/10.
