This City Urban Trail reference and Map describes types (tiers) of urban trails, note that some of these examples are inconsistent with the current trail network.

COS EBike Reference

The city EBike Page shows that some trails are open to e-bikes by name, excludes their use on “multi-use” trails, with a definition that is inconsistent with the Urban Trail descriptions. There is no definition of “system trails”, typically thought of as more narrow, soft surface walking/hiking trails in places like Palmer Park, Pulpit rock, etc.

Colorado Springs E-MTB Trails

Cheyenne Mountain State Park

Most trails within Cheyenne mountain State Park in the southwest corner of Colorado Springs allows E-Bikes including E-MTBs. According to state park policy ebike are treated as bicycles and allow on the same trails as any bicycle. Policy quote below

Class 1 and 2 e-bikes are allowed the same access as road bikes and mountain bikes, while class 3 e-bikes are only to be allowed on roadways and in designated bike lanes.​

Cheyenne Canyon/Ntl Forest

Aside from state parks the only Colorado Springs singletrack Mountain Bike (MTB) trails that officially allow Electric Mountain Bikes (E-MTBs) are those that also allow Motorcycles. This includes the iconic Captain Jacks trail that stretches from North Cheyenne Canyon Park into the Pike National forest.

State County EBike Reference information

Colorado State EBike Law

Enacted in January of 2018 the State of Colorado adopted regulations defining ebikes and where they are allowed. While the state defined these rules EBike regulations are ultimately controlled by local jurisdictions.

Unless otherwise restricted, Class 1 and Class 2 electric bicycles, and scooters are allowed on the same bicycle and pedestrian paths as conventional bicycles.

Local jurisdictions have the authority to prohibit the operation of electric bicycles and scooters on any bicycle or pedestrian path under its jurisdiction.

Local laws pertaining to electric scooters must be no more restrictive than those pertaining to class 1 electric bicycles.

El Paso County Parks EBike Regulations

EBikes are allowed on primary and secondary trails within the El Paso County park and trail network.

El Paso County EBike Regulation Text Class I and Class II Electrical Assisted Bicycles may use El Paso County Parks Primary and Secondary trails up to a maximum speed of twenty miles per hour. Class III Electrical Assisted Bicycles are not permitted on any County trail.

Colorado State Parks EBike Regulations

E-bike use on CPW Lands – Class 1 and 2 e-bikes are allowed the same access as road bikes and mountain bikes, while class 3 e-bikes are only to be allowed on roadways and in designated bike lanes.​

BLM/National Forest EBike Regulations

In August 2019, Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt issued Secretary’s Order increasing recreational opportunities through the use of Electric Bikes (e-bikes). While the BLM intends for the rule to increase accessibility to public lands, e-bikes would not be given special access beyond what traditional, non-motorized bicycles are allowed.

The rule provides that authorized officers may authorize, through subsequent land-use planning or implementation-level decisions, the use of Class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes on non-motorized roads and trails. The rule does not, by itself, open any non-motorized trails to e-bike use.

EBikes are an ever growing part of the bicycle market globally, in the US, as well as in the Colorado Springs Market specifically. EBikes and E-Mobility devices (Electric scooters, one wheels, Electric skateboards, Etc.) are also a growing piece of the urban mobility puzzle world wide and make a lot of sense in Colorado Springs. EBikes are an efficient, cost-effective and fun way to travel, and have been shown to change transportation habits. Nationally, 45% of all vehicle trips are 3 Miles or less, while trips over 6 miles account for 40% of all trips. This data shows that there is a large percentage of vehicle trips that are well within the range of an average bicycle rider, a distance that is that much more reasonable for people using an EBike. This is especially true in our city as we do have some challenging topography, EBikes remove that barrier as can be seen with the growth and success of PikeRide ever since our local bike share provider introduced EBikes to their fleet. EBikes make it possible to travel longer distances in less time, making EBikes a great solution for the sprawling nature of our city with fairly large distances between destinations. It’s been shown that EBike riders ride more frequently, which is one of our goals at Bike COS. EBikes remove barriers making bike riding more attractive so more people do it.

Official Colorado Springs E-Bikes, E-Scooter, and EPAMD Definitions

Below are the official vehicle definitions as outlined in the February 2021 revision of the Colorado Springs Traffic Code

BICYCLE: A vehicle propelled by human power applied to pedals upon which a person may ride having two tandem wheels or two parallel wheels and one forward wheel, all of which are more than fourteen inches in diameter.

ELECTRICAL ASSISTED BICYCLE: A vehicle having two or three wheels, fully operable pedals, and an electric motor not exceeding seven hundred fifty watts of power. Electrical assisted bicycles are further required to conform to one of three classes as follows:

  • CLASS 1 ELECTRICAL ASSISTED BICYCLE: An electrical assisted bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling and that ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches a speed of twenty miles per hour.
  • CLASS 2 ELECTRICAL ASSISTED BICYCLE: An electrical assisted bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance regardless of whether the rider is pedaling but ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches a speed of twenty miles per hour.
  • CLASS 3 ELECTRICAL ASSISTED BICYCLE: An electrical assisted bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling and that ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches a speed of twenty-eight miles per hour.

ELECTRIC PERSONAL ASSISTIVE MOBILITY DEVICE or EPAMD: A self-balancing, nontandem two-wheeled device, designed to transport only one person that is powered solely by an electric propulsion system producing an average power output of no more than seven hundred fifty watts.


  • Weighing less than one hundred pounds;
  • With or without handlebars;
  • That is powered by an electric motor; and
  • That has a maximum speed of twenty miles per hour on a paved level surface when powered solely by the electric motor.

“Electric scooter” does not include an electrical assisted bicycle, EPAMD, motorcycle, or low-power scooter.

Please be aware, if your vehicle does not fall within the guidelines above it is not classified as a Scooter, E-Bike, or EPAMD below are definitions of other vehicle types covering addition electrically powered vehicles.

LOW-POWER SCOOTER: A self-propelled vehicle designed primarily for use on the roadways with not more than three wheels in contact with the ground, no manual clutch, and either of the following:

  • A cylinder capacity not exceeding fifty cubic centimeters if powered by internal combustion; or
  • A wattage not exceeding four thousand four hundred seventy-six if powered by electricity.

“Low-power scooter” does not include a toy vehicle, bicycle, electrical assisted bicycle, wheelchair, or any device designed to assist people with mobility impairments who use pedestrian rights-of-way.

  • Is self-propelled utilizing electricity as its primary propulsion method; B. Has at least three wheels in contact with the ground;
  • Does not use handlebars to steer; and
  • Exhibits the manufacturer’s compliance with 49 CFR 565 or displays a seventeen character vehicle identification number as provided in 49 CFR 565.

TOY VEHICLE: Any vehicle that has wheels and is not designed for use on public highways or for offroad use. “Toy vehicle” includes, but is not limited to, gas-powered or electric powered vehicles commonly known as mini bikes, “” bikes, kamikaze boards, go peds, and stand-up scooters. “Toy vehicle” does not include electric scooters, off highway vehicles or snowmobiles.

The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to bicycles, and/or electrical assisted bicycles, and/or electric scooters, and/or low-power scooters, and/or EPAMDs and other authorized users of bicycle lanes and, in a bicycle lane and/or protected bicycle lane.

So let’s say you just bought a SurRon and you want to lug it up to the mountains to ride. You notice all the other Bike Racks have a 50-75lb limit and the SurRon is 100lbs! What do you do? You buy this rack! After you receive it, you watch the YouTube videos on how to assemble it. Install it on your vehicle hitch. Then act like a grown child jumping up and down on it like a 12 y/o on a trampoline. Just to make Mototote lives up to their claim. Next day you load up your SurRon. Take it to mountains and shred that trail like a clown in Nitro Circus. Returning home with a big ole grin on your face.

If shipping says next day, it will be on your porch the next day! Assembly is too easy. Right out of box with a 400 mile test run, and day after tomorrow another 400 miles on the back of an rv. MotoTote has exceeded all my expectations.

The Mini Bike Rack is great and lives up to expectations!The garage where I live has no dedicated parking spots therefore I need to remove the rack after each use. This was the only carrier I could find that was strong enough to support my 160 lb Ebike all while being small enough to store away and light enough to move around each time with no help. The rack as matte black powdered coated looks bad ass too.

I looked at cheaper carriers but this one really looked so much better than anything else I saw, then I read that they are coming out with an add on carrier for this and I was sold. The parts were all rapped with care in the box when it arrived and the quality is obvious even before you assemble it. When I contacted customer service, they were very efficient and pleasant to deal with. Looking forward to the add on carriers as soon as it’s available.

And even the relatively humble and underpowered dirt bike segment now offers a proliferation of emissions-free options — and we’re here to help you separate the battery-powered wheat from the chaff.

Why You Should Get an Electric Dirt Bike

Helps Save the Planet: Smaller motorcycles are far from the most fuel-thirsty vehicles. But electric dirt bikes still reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and every little bit helps.

Less Maintenance: Electric motors require far fewer moving parts. That means more time riding and less time (and money) replacing parts. You also don’t need to buy things like oil.

Less Noise: Electric dirt bikes do make some noise, but they make less than internal-combustion dirt bikes — noise that can diminish the enjoyment of being in nature for riders and those nearby.

What to Look For

Street Legality: Like combustion dirt bikes, many of them will not be street-legal. And you may live in a municipality that will confiscate and crush them if you try to use them for that — electric or not. There are dual-sport electric dirt bikes (lighter than adventure motorcycles), which can also be used as commuter bikes. But make sure you clarify that before buying.

Battery Range: Range is a significant drawback to any electric vehicle. You want to ensure you have enough range to do the amount of riding you’re planning. expensive electric dirt bikes will have range that can exceed what most drives can handle physically. But that may be costly.

Battery Charging: A nother important factor beyond range is how long it takes to charge the battery. Shorter is better. Manufacturers may offer accessories that improve charging speed. Some dirt bikes can instantly swap in a newly charged battery and return to the trail.

How We Tested

Gear Patrol writers and editors are continually testing the best electric dirt bikes on a variety of terrains to update this guide looking at features like comfort, ease of use and riding characteristics. Our testers have spent time riding the Zero XF and the Cake Kalk INK so far; however, we’ll be updating this guide as we continue to test more models.

Zero’s FX isn’t a one-trick pony; it’s good at a little bit of everything. It’s fast but torque-heavy up front. For comparison, it’s nimble but still about 50 pounds heavier than KTM’s 350EXC-F. And it’s quiet, which anyone who’s ridden a dual sport before knows has distinct advantages and downsides. (Upsides include not disturbing nature as you ride through and saving your eardrums; cons include being unable to announce yourself to other riders on the trail or cars on the street.)

The FX’s ride is very smooth — from city streets to rutted-out trails and even completely off-road in the ungroomed wild. The tires grip well on city streets, even after a light rain. The FX can reach a top speed of 85, but I rarely found myself pushing it above 65 — this is a great cruising bike built for the trails as much as it is for the road. The acceleration feels torque-y until you get the hang of the feeling; I’d recommend starting in Eco until you get a feel for how the bike handles, experienced rider or not.

The profile is lean and mean, just as advertised. Your tester is 5’4” and weigh 110 pounds, and she could handle and maneuver this bike with relative ease, although she did make sure to get comfortable on the bike on uncrowded trails before taking it to the streets. Zero says the charging time is 1.3 hours, but I found it to be much longer than that. the bike was delivered to me with an 80 percent charge, and it took more than two hours to get it full. The range is 91 miles which is a solid day’s ride, but unless you have the means to give the bike a good overnight charge, you’ll be SOL the next day. And that 91-mile range is in the city — if you’re riding on the highway at 70 mph without starting and stopping, it drops to 39 miles per charge.

We’ve been fans of Swedish manufacturer Cake — and Stefan Ytterborn’s helmet/eyewear/apparel brand, POC — for years. Founded in 2016, Cake has consistently put out smooth, innovative electric bikes that offer both gorgeous looks and purpose-built function.

The Electric Mini-Bike Craze, 10 Models

When I was young, one of my favorite memories was riding a minibike. For readers who may not know where that term comes from, back in the 1950’s and 60’s, there was a cheap family of scooters that used a Briggs Stratton lawnmower engine along with a simple centrifugal clutch. You didn’t have to operate any type of clutch lever. At idle the engine was not engaged, but as soon as you twist the throttle, the auto-clutch would grab-and-go.

When I first saw a pedal-bicycle with a mini-bike frame, I thought it was cute, and that the builder was trying to generate some nostalgia in potential customers. I honestly didn’t think they would become as popular as they are now. However, after some thought, I think their popularity signals a real tipping point for electric bicycles.

The first few years that electric bicycles began growing as a transportation option in Europe, they were fairly low-powered. Many countries in the EU limited their power to 250W by law. When these ebikes began to be imported to the US, they did not sell well at all! The main styling theme seemed to be that they were very stealthy, you almost couldn’t tell they were electric. They “looked like” a regular bicycle.

Whether that was a good idea or a bad idea, the American power limit for a street-legal ebike is 750W, and when the Bafang BBS02 kit came out at 750W (actually capable of 1100W), it seemed like ebikes finally began to really take off in the USA.

Even so, there was (and still is) a large percentage of the population that want their ebike to look like a bicycle, with an almost invisible motor, and to remain as light as possible. For an example of a stealthy ebike, click here.

With this new wave of mini-bike frames, they have never really looked like a bicycle from the beginning. In fact, they are designed to look exactly like a motorized vehicle from many peoples’ childhoods. Lets have a look at some of the modern electric mini-bikes.

Coast Cycles Buzzraw

Back in 2015, we went to the Interbike convention and one of the new developments was that 20-inch wheels, tires, and tubes were finally available in a 4-inch wide format. Coast Cycles was an early adopter, and I think there’s a chance they might have been the first to produce a mini-bike style of frame. Either way, the Buzzraw is their latest version.

The Buzzraw SL is a chromoly-steel “frame only” bike (you would need to buy the rest of the parts). The “Buzzraw” is a pedal-only bicycle. The Buzzraw X750 is a full-suspension frame with a 750W geared rear hub from Bafang. They have just started to advertise a version with the Bafang BBSHD mid drive.

Luna Cycles Banana

There are two reasons to put the Luna Cycles Banana at the top of your consideration list. Luna has made no secret of the fact that they source the “Ruckus” frames from Coast Cycles. The first reason to make sure you look into them is that they not only start out with the well-regarded Bafang BBSHD mid-drive motor, but they are the only retailer that has the option of upgrading to a 2500W controller (the Ludicrous version), which is a huge step-up from the stock BBSHD 1500W.

By having a mid-drive motor (which allows the motor to drive a selection of gears, unlike a one-speed hubmotor) and the option of 2500W, The Luna Banana will provide the best possible climbing ability, if you live near steep uphills.

The second reason you should seriously consider the Banana as a top choice is that the Banana also has the option of the greatest battery pack ever built for an ebike. The Luna Cycles Wolf pack. This may sound like hype, and some type of ad, but…every cell is individually fused for the ultimate on fire protection.

Plus, the entire pack is fully potted in clear epoxy (or black). Doing that provides the ultimate in vibration and crash protection, and also the ultimate in water-proofing. Not only that, but it has the option of a 50A BMS for high-performance, when using my favorite ebike cell, the Samsung 30Q.

Juiced City Scrambler

The Juiced step-through version is called the “Scorpion”. It also has a full-suspension option.

Ruff Cycles Lil Buddy

Ruff is based in Germany, and they have decided to retail a mini-bike style of frame with the proprietary Bosch mid-drive. Europeans seem to like the high-end and smooth torque-sensing mid drives, but they are limited to 25 km/h, which is 16-MPH. And the power levels that are available seem to be limited to 250W-500W, depending on the country of purchase.

Lithium Cycles Super-73

The Super-73 started out as a Kickstarter, and they use the well-regarded Bafang BBSHD.

Ariel D-Class

The standout feature of the Ariel D-class is that not only is it an ebike, it is a 2-WHEEL DRIVE ebike! If you only have mild hills, and you live near the beach…a 2WD ebike is an extreme upgrade when riding through sand or off-road.

I also suspect that the D-Class would be quite a useful mule to have around a ranch where it snows in the winter. For that kind of user, I’d swap-in the largest 52V battery pack I could find, and click here for several selections that would work.

Part of my enthusiasm for large 48V and 52V battery packs is that they can run an inverter to provide 120V AC in an emergency, or at a remote location.

The two hub-motors on the D-Class are geared. That means that they provide lots of torque per input watts, compared to the direct-drive motors that are the same size. That being said, geared motors have a poor heat-shedding path, so they are not good for climbing steep uphills.

UNI Moke

The UNI Moke is based in Germany, which shows how far obscure bits of American culture can travel and take root. It uses a single geared hubmotor in the rear.

Addmotor Motan M-70

If you don’t want to fiddle with spokes, the Addmotor and the Juiced both use cast wheels.

Pineapple Bike

Pineapple started out on Indiegogo back in 2017, but I can’t find any recent information about them. Its a single-speed with no headlight or tail-light, so it’s as bare-bones as they come.

Onyx RCR

I was a little unsure if this ebike deserves to be in this particular index of “mini-bikes” (looks over at judges and sips a beer…sees a thumbs up)

Out of all of these selections, this model has the most powerful hubmotor, and the most powerful front brake. It uses 17-inch “moped” rims, which is equivalent to 24-inch bicycle rims (but much stronger). That being said, it does have pedals, which drive a single-speed chain.

Rad Power “Runner”

Some riders either need (or simply want) a step-through frame. Once you take away the top-bar, the ebike starts to look a lot less like a minibike, but…I felt I should include at least one step-through. One of the handy characteristics of the mini-bikes is the long padded seat so two riders can squeeze-in, and the Rad Runner has that.

Ebikes with 20-inch wheels and fat tires are proving to be very versatile and useful. Even if you don’t particularly care about the nostalgia of a new frame with a vintage style, all of these selections are real “knock around” ebikes that can take some abuse and still keep going.
