DYU R1 Electric Bike Review | An Ebike Designed for an Urban Environment

The DYU R1 is undoubtedly a unique electric bike. It’s foldable, but only the handlebars. Still, its small frame will make it easy to get into tight spaces and the folding handlebars make it easier to fit into the back of a vehicle. At 999 it is still in the affordable ebike category though there are a handful of other options at this price point.

DYU R1 Motor And Battery

We were attracted by the design of the DYU R1. It’s offered in green, blue and black and it hides the electrical components nicely. The 36 volt, 5 Ah battery is part of the seatpost and also locks in place to keep it secure. With its smaller battery, this ebike is designed for short trips in the city. DYU notes a range of 25-38 miles though I’d expect more in the 15-25 mile range depending on the usual factors: pedal assist level, conditions, rider weight, terrain etc.

The battery is paired with a 250 watt rear hub motor which is capable of reaching speeds up to 15 mph.

Engaging the motor is a torque sensor, an almost unheard-of feature in a bike at this price point. Most often, you’ll find cadence sensors, which simply engage when the pedals are spinning. In comparison, a torque sensor engages the motor more as the rider pedals harder. A simple monochrome LCD display controls the pedal-assist settings on the DYU R1. DYU R1 Components and Accessories

The DYU R1 is a single-speed which will help cut down on maintenance but will make steep hills challenging – again this a city-oriented ebike. Mechanical brakes provide the stopping power, which are plenty sufficient given this ebike’s top speed. It also comes with front and rear paint-matched fenders, a simple rear rack, and both front and rear lights.

The rear lights in particular are worth calling out as they are nicely integrated into the frame. A basic front suspension fork can be found up front though it does not have a lockout or preload adjustability. To complete the package, the DYU R1 has 20″ wheels with street tires.


The DYU R1 shines as an affordable unique-looking lightweight urban ebike. City-dwellers, where space is a premium, and shorter riders will appreciate the smaller size. The torque sensor felt responsive and we also appreciated the attention to the frame design and color offerings. At 999 it seems priced right for what you’re getting. DYU D3F E-Bike Review: Assisting Your Ride

Electric bikes come in all shapes and forms. Some of them imitate the body of a motorcycle, while others look like speed bicycles. Then there are the mini-folding bikes that exist for urban commuters. A few years ago we took the Swagtron Swagcycle out for a spin and were very impressed with how much fun that little e-bike was. With so much improvement in not only battery, but technology as a whole, we were so excited to receive the DYU D3F Electric Mini Bike from the Chinese company. On paper, there’s a lot of similarities in form factor, but on closer inspection, these new bikes are on a whole new level. Here’s my full review of this 14 inch folding e-bike!

Battery Benefits

To get the specs out of the way, the DYU D3F houses a 36V 10 Ah battery right on the center of the frame. This is the go to location for storing an electric battery for this form factor. Charging from zero to a full battery takes a few hours and the bike did seem to hold a charge for a substantial amount of time. The port for charging is also located here with a cap that never seems to stay in place. Every single e-bike we’ve owned don’t seem to keep those little plunger caps in place. I rode it around the neighborhood for a couple of hours with plenty of battery remaining. I’ll go in-depth about specific numbers when I discuss the various ways you can ride this bike. As the battery is a bit lofty along with the full metal frame body, the bike does have a bit of weight behind it. At near 40 lbs, it requires some maneuvering to lift it into the boot of a car. By collapsing the handle bars and lowering the seat all the way down, the bike does force itself to be compact enough to fit into most sedan trunks. That’s a big benefit that other larger e-bike form factors can’t match.

Ride Quality

I was surprised by the power hidden inside this little bike. The 14-inch wheels look almost comedic from a distance, but with a 240 W motor powering all of the movement, the DYU zips by a flat surface with intent. DYU says the top speed is 15.5 MPH and while I never actually hit 15 MPH with a fully rotated throttle, I did come close to it. I comfortably rode at 10 MPH and felt safe doing so. I was, however, taken aback by a teeny bit of instant torque whiplash the first time I twisted that throttle. There’s a baby launch feeling of an electric motor lurking in this bike. Seeing as the wheelbase is so narrow and tiny, the ride quality is a bit bumpy. This is something all bikes of this form factor deal with simply because the turning radius is so tight. You’ll feel the dips and bumps of the road that will affect your steering ever so slightly. While it isn’t unmanageable, I do recommend being more cautious about slowing down for intersections.

The most exciting feature about the DYU e-bike is that there are two drive modes. When Alex reviewed his Michael Blast Greaser. we had a blast using pedal assist. It was fun actually using your legs in unison with the bike to travel distances. It makes you feel like you’re actually working with your bike. Folding e-bikes like the Swagtron used to not have pedals as they were fully focused on throttle riding. The D3F has pedals!

Not only does it have pedals, the bike also supports electric pedal assistance! While it isn’t an advanced system that allows for different ranges of assistance, it was still absolutely noticeable and helpful for the inclines I came across. By forgoing the usage of the throttle for assisted pedaling, DYU says you can hit anywhere from 20-40 miles on a full battery depending on the ride quality. I found that the lower end of that estimate is what is more realistic simply because it’s near impossible to find a truly flat road that stays flat for that many miles. With movement only through the use of the throttle, 15-35 miles is the estimate we have from DYU. If you’re topping out at about 10-15 miles consistently on your ride, I’d say 15-20 miles of battery life on normal roads would be a safe number to bet on. All of this is still plenty good enough for a round trip to a market or coffee shop in a town.

Functional Uses

When you add additional aesthetics like a headlamp and a rear fog light, the DYU bike is quite an attractive package. Like I said earlier, this isn’t the first time we’ve explored this form factor, but it does feel so much more refined and functional than the last time we spent significant time on one of these types of bikes. There’s both front and rear disc brakes that work well enough during our one month with the bike. I do feel like that in terms of safety, there is a little bit of caution that needs to be anticipated when applying the brakes. For this type of form factor, there needs to be plenty of wiggle room to work with to reach a full stop. That’s to be expected with such a small wheel base.

Is it Worth It?

The bike was also quite easy to assemble. Alex put it all together in less than 5 minutes at the office. We were both pleasantly surprised at how relatively comfortable the seat was. Some bike seats are just insanely firm that your tush gets wrecked from sitting on it. This seat is cushy enough without being too soft for a bike seat. It actually is really comfortable. Honestly, for 499, this really isn’t a toy anymore. With gas at an all-time high, I can see many people in various situations actually relying on this for commute purposes. The fact that you have assisted pedaling on a bike this compact is a game changer for getting you across town. That was one drawback of using the Swagcycle as a full-time commuter bike; that totally isn’t a problem with this bike. The DYU D3F isn’t the smoothest ride, nor is it the best looking e-bike in the world, but it has a lot of charm and provides plenty of functionality that is worth considering.

Test of the F-Wheel DYU D2 Electric Bike

After trying the first model in the range, I continue my momentum with a test of the F-Wheel DYU D2 electric bike. On the program, many similarities, especially the design, but above all the much-awaited improvements. Follow me to discover this little two-wheeled car.

My opinion on the F-Wheel DYU D2

A light mini electric bike that you can take everywhere with you. Possibility to pedal when the battery is empty. Adjustable seat. Disc brakes. Quick folding.

A great improvement over the previous model DYU D1: addition of pedals and better autonomy. The F-Wheel DYU D2 electric bike is delivered wrapped in bubble wrap and surrounded by padding, in a large cardboard box, as a kit. It will only take 10 minutes to assemble it. First you need to install the handlebars, then the pedals and fenders.

I won’t lie, I really appreciate the design of DYU’s F-Wheels. Rather sober and refined, the detail of the finishes, both on the handlebars and at the level of the lights, is appreciated. The design, both resistant and light, is the charm of this electric bike.

Most of the functions that interest you are found on the handlebars. On the left, the ignition button, the front brake and the horn. On the right, the rear brake, the acceleration handle and an on-board screen that allows you to view various information on the handlebars such as the distance travelled, the driving mode or the switching on of the lights.

This little car is available in black or white with red finishes at the time of my test. I quickly got used to its small size. Barely the start button engaged and the throttle handle turned, the bike takes us with pep, but very gently. The feeling is therefore very pleasant: you feel that you are moving at a good pace, without being destabilized by the speed.

A noted improvement over the DYU D1 is the presence of pedals. This is really a point that appealed to me, because it saves battery power on longer routes. By the way, for the most curious ones, we have an article about the best electric bike batteries!

Pedaling comfort is surprisingly good. We can expect on this kind of rather small format, a rather bad comfort, but this is not my opinion! Having used it alternating between automatic and manual mode, I’m quite satisfied with the pedaling phases, which are not a chore, because the bike remains rather light despite everything.

Technical caracteristics

I particularly like this part of the test, which allows you to see if the manufacturer announces real autonomy. This is the case for the F-Wheel D2 electric bike! In electric mode, I was able to cover distances between 11-12 miles without problem, or just over an hour.

The battery holds up well over the entire length and you only feel weakness on the last few meters. When you reach the end, it’s a real pleasure to be able to switch to manual mode and pedal to complete your journey. The battery is recharged by inserting the supplied cable into the hatch and plugging directly into the EU socket.

The 250W motor is in the rear wheel and the 5200mAh Li-on battery is in the frame of the bike. The speed is regulated so as not to drain the battery intensively. It is for this reason that you will very rarely reach the advertised maximum 18 mph. For my part, I oscillate between 14-16 mph, which is already very good in town and for the use of home-work and shopping that I do.

Acceleration is done gradually, giving a fairly pleasant driving comfort. This bike is equipped with front and rear disc brakes which do their job very well. Very reactive without being abrupt, the braking is controlled rather well. I really appreciate the switching on of the rear light when braking, for more safety!

The on-board computer integrated into the handlebar allows you to consult information such as the distance traveled, the speed, but also to manage the switching on of the lights and to change the driving mode.

It is possible to switch from an electric driving mode, i.e. automatic, to a manual mode, where you will pedal like on a normal bicycle. These two modes allow you to save the battery at your convenience and according to your route.

I loved it on the D1, and the D2 also offers it: cruise control. A true comfort feature, the cruise control stabilizes its cruising speed and frees up the action of the hand on the handle. This is operated via the on-board screen.

Nothing to say about safety at the wheel of this electric bike. We remain vigilant when it is pushed to its maximum speed, but we feel that it has been perfectly studied for this use. It rides while offering suitable lighting and the switching on of the rear light when braking provides additional safety. do not rely on its small wheels, because they are able to hold on roads that are not always in good condition.

The mobile application will allow you to manage your electric bike with ease. To associate it, simply turn on the bike, launch the application and synchronize it (the phone’s GPS and Bluetooth must be activated beforehand).

This will allow you to consult various information on the use of the bike, and to unleash it once the distance of approximately 10 miles has been covered. It is possible to generate a password, blocking the bike in case of theft. It should be noted, however, that it is possible to pedal.


After more than a month of testing the F-Wheel DYU D2 electric bike, I can say that I am very satisfied. I find the price quite affordable for an electric bike that will accompany you on your daily trips. It is maneuverable quite easily, which makes it practical in public transport and easily stored in a vehicle trunk. The speed is perfect for city use.

You feel safe in moderate traffic. Autonomy is suitable for daily use. I go to work every day with my DYU D2, and when I forgot to recharge it the day before, I take the cable to recharge it on site.
