E-mopeds vs. E-bikes: everything you need to know when launching a fleet

Introducing a fleet of light electric vehicles to your city can have a massive positive impact on people’s lives.

Introducing a fleet of light electric vehicles to your city can have a massive positive impact on people’s lives. An eco-friendly extra transport option cuts pollution, noise, and traffic created by cars.

But while the ‘why’ is simple, choosing exactly which electric vehicle will work for your city takes a bit more thought. Your choice will affect both your riders’ experience and your business prospects, so getting it right is crucial.

In this article, we’ll go through the pros and cons of choosing e-mopeds vs. e-bikes. We’ll also highlight a few factors to consider when picking the right vehicle for your city, and talk about why we don’t advocate using e-kick-scooters in a sharing system.

Electric mopeds: the basics

Also known as ‘sit-down scooters’, e-mopeds normally look pretty similar to standard gasoline-powered mopeds. They have a leg shield and body that conceals their electrical mechanics, and often come with storage space for helmets under the seat or in the leg shield.

Like all mopeds, they tend to have more relaxed licensing requirements than larger, more powerful motorcycles.

These days there’s a wide range of e-mopeds on the market that are specially designed for sharing fleets. These come with specific features that make riding more intuitive, so it’s easy for people to get started even without much prior experience.

Pros for choosing e-mopeds vs. e-bikes

Here’s a few reasons why you might pick e-mopeds over e-bikes:

  • E-mopeds are faster. Their top speed is around 45 km/h, while e-bikes are capped at around 25–35km/h.
  • It’s easier to travel further on an e-moped than an e-bike, making them a more viable alternative to cars for longer journeys.
  • No cycle lanes needed — if your city doesn’t have them, go with e-mopeds.
  • 10–15% higher price per minute.
  • Harder to steal as they’re heavier and easier to trace.
  • Driver’s license requirement makes people more invested in riding them, which means more frequent rides per person and lower rider churn.
  • No physical effort to ride = no sweating on your commute.
  • Fits an extra passenger on the back.
  • storage space.
  • surfaces makes it easier to give your brand visibility.

Some good examples of e-moped manufacturers for sharing fleets are: Niu, SuperSOCO, Govecs, and Askoll.

E-moped case study: eCooltra

ECooltra was founded in Barcelona as a spin-off of the moped rental company, Cooltra. The company has become a big success across southern Europe, growing its fleet from 250 to 7,400 e-mopeds in just four years. It now also operates in Rome, Madrid, Lisbon, Milan, and Valencia.

E-mopeds were a natural fit for each of these cities. They all have a longstanding culture of riding mopeds, with many citizens already relying on them to get from A to B. This means there was solid infrastructure and parking in place for eCooltra’s e-moped fleet.

The mobility culture of your city is an incredibly important factor to take into account when launching a shared fleet. Picking a familiar vehicle makes it easier for people to start using your service, and also lets you take advantage of existing infrastructure.

Electric bikes: the basics

E-bikes are bicycles assisted by an electric motor. You still use your legs to pedal as you would with a normal bike, but the extra electric power lets you ride a lot faster and further with less effort. By combining convenience with the benefits of exercise, they’ve recently grown a lot in popularity.

When used in a sharing fleet, they can be parked freely on the street, at parking stations, or a combination of both.

Pros for choosing e-bikes vs. e-mopeds

Here’s a few reasons why you might choose e-bikes over e-mopeds:

  • Less expensive than e-mopeds generally
  • No driver’s license required to ride, making them more instantly accessible to a wider range of people.
  • Travel further on a single battery.
  • Fewer area restrictions. E-bikes can go anywhere a bicycle can go, while e-mopeds must stick to roads.
  • Simpler and less expensive to insure than e-mopeds. It depends on the model, but insurance for an e-bike is normally around 3–5x cheaper.
  • Easier to transport for servicing.
  • relaxed parking restrictions, which means less hassle with local authorities.
  • Provides health benefits from exercise.

Some good examples of e-bike manufacturers for sharing fleets are: Arcade, Comodule, and E-flow.

E-bike case study: Billy

Billy Bike is a company based in Brussels, Belgium. Since launching its fleet of e-bikes in 2018, Billy has become a leading provider of eco-friendly mobility in Belgium. The e-bikes themselves have become recognised throughout the city for their sleek, distinctive branding, which has helped make Billy a sustainable business.

E-bikes were a good choice for a compact city like Brussels — over half of journeys made in the city are under 5km, which is a perfect cycling distance.

But Billy’s success also demonstrates that how your vehicles look has a big impact on building brand loyalty. So when choosing a vehicle, keep design and branding at the top of your mind.

Electric kick scooters: why they’re not ideal for sharing fleets

When it comes to light electric vehicles, electric kick scooters are the first type that comes to mind for many people. Companies like Lime and Bird made headlines by launching electric kick scooter fleets in multiple major cities almost overnight. Since then, they’ve continued to grow in popularity across the world.

However, while their portability makes them an attractive choice for individuals to own, we don’t advocate choosing them for your shared fleet. There are a few reasons for this:

  • No clear regulations for how and where to ride them, unlike with e-mopeds and e-bikes
  • Less safe to ride overall
  • Easy to steal and vandalise — they only last a few months before they need replacing.
  • Lack of durability limits eco-friendly benefit, as manufacturing more of them creates emissions.
  • No clear places to park them, creating a mess on public walkways.

A combination of these factors has caused conflict between electric kick scooter fleet operators and city authorities, who increasingly see these fleets as a nuisance. So if you want to impact your city in a positive way, our advice is to stick to e-bikes and e-mopeds.

Final advice on choosing vehicles

Both e-bikes and e-mopeds can fuel sustainable growth for your business when deployed correctly, as the graphic below shows.

Either type should last at least 3–5 years in a fleet before you need to replace them. If things are going well, you should only have to renew around 25–30% of your fleet after 4 years.

Of course, this depends on a number of factors such as rider behavior, vandalism, weather, and your vehicle maintenance routine. So when doing your market research, make sure you form a good understanding of the people and the geography of your city.

Regardless of whether you choose e-bikes or e-mopeds, the most important factors to take into account are:

  • Design that resonates with your brand and your target customers. People seeing your vehicles on the street is a big driver of organic growth.
  • Battery swapping system that works well for your operating team.
  • Durability of vehicles and batteries.
  • Price. E-mopeds start at around 2500 euros, e-bikes at 1000 euros.
  • Estimated range of the vehicle before it needs to be recharged. E-mopeds should be able to travel at least 50km on a single battery, and e-bikes at least 100km.

Is an Electric Bike a Moped? (Differences Explained)

Electric bikes have motors just like a moped but there are some big differences, especially when it comes to the legal side, that separate electric bikes from mopeds. In this article, I will explain what those differences are and clear up any confusion!

No, an electric bike is not a moped, even an electric bike with a throttle. Electric bikes can be ridden like a regular bike and have gears just like a regular bike. Modern mopeds are simply low-powered scooters.

Mopeds were originally two-wheeled, gas-powered, bikes that had pedals and a chain but the pedals were mostly used to crank start the motor.

This is a cool old school style gas moped

You could actually pedal an old-school moped like a regular bike, but is nearly impossible and just didn’t work very well.

So basically the term “Moped” is a pretty confusing mess and mopeds these days are really nothing like electric bicycles.

Quickly Ride to a Section.

What Is the Difference Between an Electric Bike and a Modern Moped?

Electric bikes can be ridden like a regular bike but have a motor that will help assist with pedaling up to a certain speed. Modern mopeds are just low-powered scooters that you sit on and use the throttle for propulsion.

Here is what Wikipedia has to say on the matter –

In my opinion, Wikipedia is not always a great source for clearing things up.

Most mopeds these days just look like regular scooters and some look like motorcycles.

Here is what modern electric mopeds look like

Whereas modern electric bikes are looking more and more like regular bikes as motors get smaller and more powerful and batteries get smaller with longer life spans.

Plus, you can actually ride an electric bike like a regular bike if you really have to. Here is an article all about this → “Can an Electric Bike Be Used Like a Regular Bike?”

Do You Need A License for an Electric Bike?

In the US there are only 3 states that still require a license to ride an electric bike, Alaska, New Mexico, and Massachusetts. In any other state, as long as you have a Class 1, 2, or 3 electric bike, you do not need a license.

Electric bikes are great because you can ride them like a regular bike and don’t need to have a license, registration, or insurance.

This is another area in which riding an electric bike can save you a lot of money.

Here is an article I think you might like → “Can An Electric Bike Replace a Car?”

What is an Electric Moped?

Modern electric mopeds are basically low-powered scooters that have a max speed of around 25pmh, no pedals, and depending upon where you live, may not require a license.

These modern electric mopeds are quite different than the original moped, which was a gas-powered bicycle that you could also pedal like a regular bike if you ran out of gas and you could use the pedals to start to motor.

Mopeds never really gained much popularity here in the US, but in some countries, they were everywhere.

coastal, cruiser, escape, 750w, moped

Nowadays, electric mopeds look just like gas-powered scooters but have smaller motors that only supply enough power to go about 25mph.

Electric mopeds do not have pedals and the rider will just sit there and use the throttle to get moving.

Electric mopeds are only legal to ride on roads with a speed limit of 25pmh or less, otherwise, you need to use the bike lane.

I would also test out your new moped on hills, since these do not have as powerful of motors as scooters, you may notice that you go pretty slow up inclines and have to veer over into the bike lane.

Electric mopeds are not like electric scooters. Electric mopeds are designed to be much lower power with speed limit restrictions and allow for some states not to have to require licenses or registration.

If you plan to buy an electric moped, I would check with local state laws first and see what their requirements are.

Are Electric Mopeds Legal to Ride on Bike Paths?

No, they are not. Electric mopeds are considered motorized vehicles and not allowed on multi-use bike paths.

This is something to really take into consideration before buying an electric moped. You will have to ride on the road and most of the time, in the bike lane.

There is a reason that few folks decide that an electric moped is a way to go in the US. You kind of get the worst of both worlds.

They are not powerful and fast enough to ride on most streets in traffic and not allowed on bike paths and multi-use paths so that you take the scenic route.

Should I Buy an Electric Bike or a Moped?

Now that there are many electric bike options that include a throttle, there is really no reason to buy a moped. Even if you have a throttle on your ebike, you will still be pedaling a bit and getting some exercise, which is always good!

With an electric bike, you can use bike paths and multi-use paths to find much better routes to where you need to go.

You will also find, that over time as you pedal more often, you will start to get into better shape and feel healthier.

If you do just want something like an electric moped and your state will require a license and insurance anyway, then I would just look at getting a more powerful electric scooter that you can ride in traffic with.

If price is your main concern, there are many electric bike options that include throttles, that won’t break the bank. My Lectric XP 2.0 was 999 and has a throttle, but you can also pedal it like a regular bike.

For the best options in electric bikes, you should check with your local bike shop and see what they have. Getting an excellent mid-drive ebike from your local dealer is going to be the best ebike experience you can have.

At the End of the Day

I am a big fan of electric bikes and I don’t really see the benefit of an electric moped.

Riding an electric bike can give all the benefits of riding a regular bike without many of the drawbacks.

Riding an electric moped just seems like a slow way to remain stuck in traffic.

If you are still torn between the two, then you can always go to your local bike shop and test ride an electric bike for free. You can also rent electric bikes in just about every major town these days.

Finding an electric moped you really test out before you buy is going to be challenging.

Plus, if you buy your electric bike from your local dealer you will always have someone, in-person, that can help you with any maintenance issues and questions you may have.

As always, stay safe out there and Keep on Riding!

FAQs

Orders have closed for batch one / June delivery of the Voodoo Ghost. Orders placed now for the Voodoo Ghost are targeting August delivery.

65 mph… with an emphasis on the plus ;). In choosing the “top speed”, we went with the minimum top-speed that anyone riding the Voodoo can achieve.

Electric vehicle range is heavily dependent on the conditions to produce a range estimate, so the answer depends on how you plan to ride, and the weight of the rider(s) and cargo. Small changes to any of these factors create an exponential change to the range of an electric vehicle

The Voodoo has 3456 watt hours of capacity. Considering a 175 pound rider, you can expect the following range:

  • At the legal eBike speed of 20 mph, you should get 60 miles.
  • At an average speed of 40 mph, you’ll get 45 miles.
  • At full throttle and top speed of 65 mph, you’ll get 25 miles.

The Voodoo and Ghost have 18KW of peak power, and they are geared for very high torque. So hills, even steep ones, will not be a problem.

coastal, cruiser, escape, 750w, moped

We changed the motor for a few reasons. performance, reliability and customization.

We know our Voodoo and Ghost customers are performance junkies, and the mid-drive motor enables 50% greater torque (240 nm at the wheel), and increases acceleration. It also removes some of the back wheel weight, which not only provides better weight distribution for stability, it also improves the rear suspension performance.

From a reliability standpoint, we wanted to make the Voodoo and Ghost easy to service. Motorcycle shops aren’t big fans of hub drives, as it’s a lot more work to change a tire, true the wheel, fix spokes, etc. We want the Voodoo to be easy for any motorcycle shop to work on, and the majority of shops won’t help you or will have a tougher time doing the job well if you have a hub drive in the wheel.

Lastly, the mid-drive motor allows for more customization and flexibility. If you want to gear the bike for higher top speed or higher torque, you can more easily change the rear sprocket, without having to change the motor or software parameters. You can also more easily customize the rims.

The Voodoo and Ghost are comparable for both speed and power. The Ghost has scrambler design elements. suspension, fenders, and dual sport tires, which makes it good for both on and off road. The Ghost comes in black, and features a gold fork, carbon tank and red anodized accents.

The bike is a single speed, it doesn’t have gears. Just twist the throttle and go!

  • In Watts it is 3456 watts (V x ah: 72×48 = 3456 Watts)

Why moped style E-bike has become so popular

Electric bikes have taken the world by storm in recent years and have become an increasingly popular means of mobility in cities. The pandemic of COVID-19 has only worsened this trend of utilizing e-bikes, motorcycles, and scooters to find safe, healthy, and ecological transport modes to and from work, socially, and to the travel sector. Of course, one of the significant advantages of adopting electric motorcycles for travel is how cost-effective these e bikes are.

Electric motorcycles, electric motorcycles, and scooters are the best solutions if you’re interested in improving your everyday journey and saving money and the environment. But one (and typical) problem is that insufficient people are aware of the difference in location and lifestyle between such devices. In this post, we will examine the essential features and benefits of e-bike and electric scooters in the electric mop type so that you can reassure yourself that everything you choose is right for you.

What are Moped Style E-Bikes?

You undoubtedly saw mopeds in cities across the United States driving up and down the streets. In recent decades, Moped bikes, which have become highly popular in America, are referred to simply as the mix of motor vehicles and pedaled bikes. They simplify transit because they are compacter and can be readily driven throughout the city, unlike other motor vehicles. However, they also have a considerably bigger volume than regular bikes and do not offer several health advantages like a bicycle.

Hemingway produces the Himiway Escape, one of the most high-professional electric moped bikes on the market. A sleek and modern e-bike with an aluminum frame of 6061, a continuous geared hub engine of 750W, a Samsung/LG battery of 48V, a seven-speed gear shift system, and a capacity of 330 liters. Briefly, the electric moped e-bike Himiway Escape is fast, efficient, sturdy, and safe and one of the best transit methods on the road today.

Differences Between Moped Style E-Bikes and Scooters

Although comparable, Long range electric bike and electric scooters of the electric motorcycle design have significant features that separate one from the other. Let’s go through some of the essential distinctions.

Electric power

However, the two batteries are charged simultaneously on scooter batteries are usually approximately 4 or 5 times larger than on e-cycles. This provides them with a higher speed. However, as e-bikes also allow exercise pedals manually, e-bikes reach a more extensive range than electric scooters from each charge.

Size

E-bikes are frequently taller than electric scooters, mainly because of the tyres’ size. Long range electric bike are models for ordinary bicycles and typically have 10-inch wheels. Thus they have bigger tyres, and so they are higher… However, since the scooter’s battery and engine are bigger, scooters are generally heavier than e-bikes.

Legal Requirements

There are numerous parallels between the performance of electric motorcycles and electric scooters. However, they are regarded as highly different in terms of regulatory standards. This is because electric scooters are considered a typical motor vehicle in most states, which requires a driver’s license and vehicle registration, and insurance. E-bikes have no such limitations in most locations.

Cost

Depending on the product and the model, the costs of purchasing e-bikes versus electric scooters are comparable. New e-bikes and scooters are available at the same overall prices. However, scooters will be more expensive in the long run because they need more charging and require a license, registration, and insurance.

In the end, it is crucial to grasp what an electrical moped-style e-bike, electric motorbikes, and scooters are all about when you choose the ideal mode of carriage for your lifestyle.

Why electric bikes have become so popular?

Not so many years ago, electric motorcycles were nearly uniformly dismissed as exceedingly unfashionable motorcycles. However, in some sections of society, the view of e-bikes has changed over the past few years – to the point that, according to researcher Mintel, 5 percent of UK adults say they will “maybe” buy one in the following 12 months. That’s almost 2.5 million individuals – and although most people might never really go around, this is a tremendous comeback for a car that only sold tonnes in 2015.

What has been changed?

Some substantial support for starters. The Olympic Gold Medallist, Victoria Pendleton, who introduced a separate e-bike last year, certainly had an essential role in credits to the vehicle.

A game-changer

“They’re a game-changer indeed. It is like developing machinery to build trust. It gives people with no cycling – motorists and passenger buses and people who have not driven in years – a genuine chance to turn to pedal power,” she noted.

It helps with more challenging slopes

In addition, the study revealed that the electric bike offered bikers confidence to try the tougher pistes, knowing that they had support if necessary.

“Participants have utilized electric bicycles to move, shop, and recreate and expressed how electric bicycles helped them break through barriers to active biking, such as hills,” said Ashley Cooper, lead author.

Conclusion

As E-Bikes are increasingly popular, calls have been made to go up to 20mph. The industry has also begun to take center stage in safety at the same time. In June, the EU proposed amending the motor assurance directive so that anyone with an e-bike might soon cycle unlawfully except if they had third-party insurance. If the rider crashes into someone, the government would be paid for it.
