FAQ’S

Can I test ride a bike?

We are a direct-to-consumer electric cruiser bike company both in pricing and strategy. You will generally pay a premium for the ability to test ride an electric bike through a dealer. However, our electric bikes have been thoroughly tested by top reviewers such as Electric Bike Review, Electric Bike Report, Cycling Weekly, Clean Technica, Electrek, and many others who have published their reviews on YouTube. You can read electric bike reviews on any of those sites. Additionally, we are now supporting an independent network of e-bike owners offering their bikes for demos. What can I expect ordering a bike from Ride1UP?

This article will explain all about what to expect when ordering an electric bike from us. Ordering With Us

Can I upgrade the cruiser’s battery?

Unfortunately, the 15ah battery pack is the largest available that will fit this cruiser electric bike frame. The e-bike battery provides a range of 30-50 miles on a single charge.

Can I switch the electric bike handlebars to another model?

No, you cannot switch the handlebars on our cruisers. The variations you see on the site are the only options we have for our electric bikes.

Can you ship to _?

We only ship our electric bikes within North America. The Continental United States is FREE. Shipping to Canada is 400. Currently, not shipping to Hawaii. We are not responsible for any additional tariffs charged by your local government which often times applied after importing ebikes. Unfortunately, we are not able to ship our electric bikes directly to Europe or Alaska at this time. You can use a shipping forwarder like ShopUsa.com to reach your country.

Are the cruiser electric bikes water-proof?

The electric bikes are not water-proof, they are water-resistant, rated IP-65. While we do not recommend leaving the ebikes out in the rain or riding in the rain or other hazardous conditions due to personal safety, the electric bikes can handle water exposure. Leaving your e-bike in the rain or other hazardous conditions could shorten the lifespan of the electric bike.

My wife and I are in LOVE! We both absolutely love our new Cafe Cruisers (and of course each other)! She is the proud owner of a Latte Gloss and I ride my Indigo Matte! After months (and I mean months) of researching which way to go with our entry into the E-bike world, we decided on Ride1Up and we are sooo glad we did! This is a very solid bike, so well built, and so much fun to ride! Now we find ourselves hurrying home at the end of the day so we can get our Cafe Cruiser time in, and exploring every corner of our city! The geniuses at Ride1Up really nailed it with this bike! We’ve never been on a more comfortable bike and now have all the confidence in the world to ride, ride, ride! My wife just loves her ‘get up and go’ button (throttle)!! Get yours quick! You won’t regret it!

I have just passed 500 miles on my Cruiser. It looks and performs as new…which is Perfect! I bought my Cafe Cruiser last November for my birthday. My wife loved it so much, we’ve added a 700 Series to our R1U family! This was not my first eBike. My first was a disaster! So, I spent many hours researching, to not make another mistake. From the moment I opened the box, I was in love! Amazing build quality. Durable. This bike will last a long time. We live on a small island where most residents have golf carts. Our Ride1UP bikes are better, faster and require no license. It was the ideal choice for us! I’ve only contacted Support once, but it was a very comfortable experience. My issue was resolved instantly. I can’t say enough about these bikes and this company! We’re believers!

Absolutely in love with this bike. Rides wonderfully, nice smooth ride. Wish there was some shock absorption for the the post, but that’s easily changed.

I’m 71 years old. I’ve been riding and working on bicycles for over sixty years and motorcycles for fifty years. I’ve been resisting the urge to try out an e-bike, as I have no difficulty handling a “traditional” bicycle. But then I read about the Cafe Cruiser and decided to buy one (it was probably the bicycle’s design that swayed me more than anything). The cruiser is outstanding, not only from a cost benefit, but also build quality, built-in lighting and a stout rear rack, ease of assembly (whoever pre assembled my bike dialed it in perfectly), and better than expected components. There seems to be a lot of competition in e-bikes right now. I took a chance on Ride1Up and glad I did. Grandpa’s “Battle Cruiser”.

Built to last and I’m in love with my cafe cruiser. quiet and speed is no problem on this bike.

I’m enjoying my new Cafe Cruiser immensely. Beautifully finished, solid construction and nicely appointed “extras” such as the built-in rear rack and lighting. I’m 6’ 2”, 200 pounds, and 71 years old, thought I’d never want an E-bike as I do a lot of casual riding but this bike sold me. Glad it did.

I love my Cafe Cruiser. I have rode 30mi on half of the battery

Perfect bike for 60 plus rider. My first E-bike. Delivery and assembly were perfectly smooth. Super comfortable upright ride keeps the smile going even after 20 miles. Whole experience… Perfect !

So I built my cafe cruiser today. I’ve had the thing for a while now. So here’s my review so far It’s packaged great. It will almost take longer to inbox it than to build it. That’s fine you wouldn’t want it showing up with issues due to shipping. The instructions are ok. It was easy to figure out when the instructions were lacking. I think we all know where the front fender goes and how to install the handle bars. There are some great videos online if you want to watch. The quality of the bike is insane. They don’t cut any corners. The craftsmanship shows while you’re building it. As for riding. I’ve built 1 mother home made e-bike. It didn’t have pedal assist. That takes a min to get used to but it’s easy. You can always shut it off and use the throttle or use a combo of pedal, throttle and assist. Thanks again and I will be purchasing another soon!

It’s a perfect fit. Great ebike. The shipping container did not prevent considerable paint damage. Although I was given an 80 refund, I would much rather have had a bike that looked like a new 1600 ebike.

As one person stated this bike is a beast. Very well built and durable riding on dirt. This is one of the best investments I’ve made and will change my life style. I am 68 so the extra boast is a blessing. The seat is comfortable and with a few other adjustments I was down the road. It is like riding and gliding down the road. I am re-locating from Sacramento to Cambria (Cali Central Coast) and will be my main transportation. I look forward in logging in some US 1 miles.

We love our electric bikes, we added the extra seat for child and the grands love it.

I have had my Cafe Cruiser for about a week. I love it! Everything worked when I assembled it; I did not need to tune anything. I can definitely see getting the miles per charge that they claim. I can comfortably do 20mph in PAS 4 on flat ground. I am in a rural beach area, it would be a commuting king in an urban area. I added a couple dodads, including my co-pilots, Quick and Quack. Have fun, ride safe!

I love it! hard to get five stars but easy 4.5. Quick shipping, easy assembly. I have about 300 miles on the bike only stranded once with dead battery, my fault left without charger. I have a 12.5 mike commute, on most days I could make the trip both ways on a single charge but I went about 5 miles out of the way and back so i figure a total of 35 miles that day on a single charge. Specs say 40 miles. Plenty fast at a great price, lots of compliments on the style, when I tell them I can do upwards of 28 plus mph and go 30 miles on a charge folks are shocked at this price point.

I am super happy with my Cafe Cruiser! It’s my second eBike. There is no comparison. It was a 71st birthday present to myself. My first bike was a mountain bike configuration, with straight handlebars. This puts too much weight on an old guy’s hands and wrists! With my Cruiser, I’m sitting upright with no undue stress anywhere. In the few weeks I’ve had her, I’ve gotten so many Комментарии и мнения владельцев and compliments! Some say it reminds them of a motorcycle, not a bicycle! The long wheelbase adds to that perception. Also, the step-thru frame is reminiscent of the old hard-tail Harleys. I love the “intermediate” size tires. The 4 inch tires are cumbersome, while the 2.75 mountain tires are a bumpy ride. The Cruiser’s 3 inch tires are the perfect compromise! The Cruiser has excellent hydraulic suspension and hydraulic brakes! These are usually found on more expensive bikes. Power isn’t an issue for me. I live on an island. There are no hills! This bike will go faster than I care to go on 2 wheels. But, it cruises perfectly at slower speeds, pedaling or nursing the throttle. Being able to use pedal assist AND throttle at the same time, is very handy. My previous bike, it was either/or. Folks, I don’t have adequate words of praise for this machine! It breaks the mold of “typical” eBikes…in terrific ways! Maybe you can tell…I’m a fan of the Ride1UP Cafe Cruiser!

Solid ride with lots of power to make it a fun bike.

Fantastic ebike for long rides. Seat is very comfortable and battery lasts for 30 plus miles. Looks great and motor has lot of juice to go over hills at great speed. We have already logged 300 miles in less than a month. Only issue we had was with shipping damaging the fork, hopefully ride1up can do better job with packaging. Their customer service was great and sent us replacement fork right away.

Introverts beware: buy the Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser, and be prepared to get stopped often by strangers and asked many questions about the ebike, the price, your experience riding it, etc. I’ve had to adjust to my role as an unwitting and unpaid Ride1Up spokesperson as an introvert. I’ve been holding my own, I think—but it does get exhausting. As for the questions I usually get, yes, assembly was fairly easy even for a bike novice like myself (the provided instructions were helpful, and some of the brief YouTube videos that were recommended were especially helpful). The price is reasonable. The shipping was quick. The bike looks cool. I’ve managed to put over 700 miles on the Cafe Cruiser in about a month. I added the rear seat, and take my kids on rides and even my spouse. No problems so far, no tire issues, no motor issues, no brake issues. As a class 3, the bike is peppy, and a single charge seems to easily reach the 30-50 mile range depending on throttle and assist. Minor gripes: the motor can surge a bit on very high pedal assist levels when initially engaged even at a low cadence (this may become a non-issue when you develop an overall feel for the bike), and some motor noise. Nothing crazy, but the bike is not dead silent—especially at high assist levels. Overall, I’m very happy and have been using our car a LOT less. So yes, I highly recommend this company and this bike. But I never expected so many conversations from random strangers and am adjusting to my newfound popularity as a Ride1Up ambassador.

I am really impressed with this bike. It is fast, convenient and enjoyable to ride. It came mostly assembled and was easy to get up and running. I built a crate on the back rack and use this for errands and some exercise, since we have had 40 days over 100 degrees I can ride without too much effort and enjoy the breeze. The crate folds down when I am not using it. I like the options for assist and use the headlight and tail light when it gets dark. I saw some feedback about the tires and bought MAXXIS. Hookworm BMX Tires 2.5 inch x 26 and they are really much better for grip, handeling, and the side walls are much thicker and will give better results for any type of puncture. They made a big difference is my confidence for turns and grip.

Just got my Cafe Cruiser! Bike arrived two days ago. shipping was pretty quick to CT! Carefully unpacked it and assembled. It is heavy and well built. I am switching from a Dillinger 1,000W conversion kit I installed on my high-end dual suspension aluminum Motobecane mountain bike nearly 10 years ago. This bike has at least the same power and more expected range (kit went about 22 miles) but is several pounds heavier despite a lighter Lithium/ion battery (kit was lead/acid). frame geometry is SO different from my old bike, but it is a LOT more comfortable for this 220lb, 53 year-old. Saddle had to be raised very high so that my knees were straighter, but also had to angle handlebars up so my knees didn’t hit them. Makes hands feel like they’re sliding forward a little. still tweaking the angle… If they made this in an X-large frame, I would’ve gotten it. But as I get used to the very different upright riding position, the power assist even on ‘2’ is quite brisk. Tingling hands and a sore butt after more than 2.5 hours of riding will be a thing of the past on this Cadillac of a bike. It will def need 2 people to put it on the tow-hitch bike rack, but now I am the ‘mule’, and will be expected to carry all the supplies leaving my wife’s bike lighter so she’ll have a prayer of keeping up. (Not likely, lol. this thing really moves!) Very happy with purchase and am already dreaming up long rails-to-trails adventures with or without her, lol!

I could not be happier with this bike. I had to wait a couple months for the blue color, but the wait was well worth it, absolutely beautiful. The frame is an awesome shape and the whole bike really just feels badass. Aside from the looks, the bike preforms even better than expected. Some of the other brands advertise 1000w motors and more advanced displays, but after hitting 31mph on a flat road, im not sure ID even want to go much faster than this bike is capable of. I also have not run into a hill the cruiser cant climb (with some peddling). This is my first ebike and this has definitely made me understand all the hype. They really allow you to dial in how much exercise you want to get, from a full workout to basically a motorcycle ride. For the value of this bike and everythring that is offered, im very happy i went with ride1up and the cafe cruiser for my first ebike. The only suggestion i would make to the company would be to include a spoke wrench as loose spokes seems to be a c

Sweet ride expecially for beach cruising in the wind! Never so happy!! Get a good sturdy lock!

Honestly I love this bike! 5/5. Here are some thoughts in no particular order: It’s larger than expected but that makes me feel safe on the road. I commute into work three days out of the week and only find myself charging overnight every two weeks. My only little annoyance is I find the bike taller than my legs are comfortable with (I am 5’4”) but the step thru option should fix that (I chose the higher bar for style reasons ha). My apartment’s bike rack is a little too small for this bike, the back tire sticks out of the slots and the wheels are too thick for the track. Measuring ahead of time would have been a Smart idea. Also as anyone with a ebike knows the battery is heavy, this bike is heavy, but I can still manoeuvre it without too many issues. And finally, I recommend getting a cheap door stopper because pulling this bike thru a heavy door that’s trying to close the entire time is a total pain. This is not the bikes fault of course but it is heavy enough to fight you a littl

Great looking bike with a ton of features for not a lot of money. Seems to be a really good company with great customer service.

Wow i am loving the crusier!! The is my first entry into the ebike market and it is so much fun to ride! The gearing is great and i can still get some good exercise in on the 1 and 2 power assist levels. Perfect commuter setup to bungee/strap things on the back or pop the people carrier seat on to get the wife or kids downtown. Good quality build and the value is really there at this price point. Thank you ride1up!!

Going on a month ownership now and I am more than satisfied. The bike was received in perfect condition. Easy to assemble and on the road within an hour of unboxing. Drove 200 miles the first week. The first inspection showed the bike to be almost perfectly tuned and calibrated. After researching many bikes I’m sure I made the right chop.

So far, so good. Amazing comfort! The weather has prevented a much needed long ride, but that’s coming soon. I was able to true the front wheel as there was a very slight wobble out of the box. Looking forward to many miles in the near future!

The only thing that has been disappointing is the tubes are not holding air. you sent me two new tube for one bike but I purchased 2.

Electrek review: The Zoom Stryder is the full suspension electric scooter I’ve needed

The Zoom Stryder couldn’t have come at a better time. With electric scooter share companies like Bird and Lime expanding around the world, studies show that commuters have been falling in love with tiny, two-wheeled EVs.

The prevalence of scooter sharing companies has introduced the masses to electric scooters and their advantages. Now sales of consumer electric scooters have taken off, and the Zoom Stryder is one of the best electric kick scooters I’ve tried so far.

Zoom Stryder electric scooter

I have to admit that I went into this review already very pro-scooter. I love riding these things.

But I think that’s fair, since anyone considering buying an electric scooter has already accepted their convenience, utility and fun as an undeniable fact.

I’ve also ridden a pile of different electric scooters. I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly. And while the Zoom Stryder isn’t the best scooter I’ve ever ridden, it’s definitely near the top of the pack. I absolutely prefer it to every electric scooter-share fleet scooter I’ve ridden.

I have to give the Singapore-based scooter company props for developing an electric scooter that is lightweight, comfortable and still powerful enough for a fun ride.

Zoom Stryder specs

If you’re familiar with the electric scooters offered by sharing companies like Bird and Lime, then the specs of the Zoom Stryder will be fairly familiar.

The scooter reaches a top speed of 30 km/h (18 mph). For certain markets, they also make a limited speed model that tops out at 25 km/h (15.5 mph). That will keep it legal in much of Europe and the company’s home in Singapore. Both models feature a 500 W front hub motor.

Braking is accomplished with regenerative braking in the front wheel and a foot activated scrub brake in the rear. Brake lights on the rear flash when the brakes are applied. A front headlight can also be turned on with a handlebar button.

The Zoom Stryder has a range of 30-35 km (18-22 Mi).

Its 280 Wh battery pack consists of LG 18650 cells, which are a fairly common choice for e-scooters and e-bikes. The scooter has a charge time of 3 hours.

The Zoom Stryder weighs only 10.8 kg (23.8 lbs) but has a load rating of 110 kg (243 lbs).

Folded, it’s just under 1 meter long (37.4 inches) so it should fit under most desks and tables.

And the feature I like most on the Zoom Stryder: full suspension, baby!

Zoom Stryder’s Performance

Let’s start with the full suspension, because this is the ticket. My biggest complaint about the electric scooter sharing companies’ fleet scooters is the lack of suspension.

The Electrek team was recently in Paris covering the Mondial Motor Show. To navigate the city we usually got around on Lime or Bird scooters. It was often faster than an Uber and we enjoyed actually seeing the beautiful city.

But man, oh man… those brick streets and bike lanes were brutal on scooters without suspension. Ever try riding a non-suspension electric scooter over pavers? It’s less than desirable, to put it lightly. We were shaking so much our vision was blurring, literally.

But with the Zoom Stryder, bumps, bricks and cobblestones are a breeze. The scooter features suspension both above the front wheel and in front of the rear wheel, creating a true dual suspension electric scooter.

Lime recently unveiled their new Lime-S Generation 3 electric scooter which they claim has “dual suspension”. However, they are erroneously referring to the twin front suspension tubes. Unlike that front suspension scooter, the Stryder Zoom has true front and rear dual suspension.

The dual suspension makes a world of difference on this scooter. When I roll over cracks in the sidewalk, I don’t feel them at all. Even boardwalks and decking, with their repeating wooden cracks, add no noticeable vibration to the ride. Pot holes in the bike lane also get absorbed surprisingly well. I still feel them, but the Zoom Stryder turns them into more of a slight bump than a bone-jarring impact.

The power is sufficient to get me up to full speed in just a few seconds, and starts from a dead stop. Other electric scooters often require you to give an initial kick before the scooter will provide motor power. The immediate start is especially welcome on slight uphills, where pushing the scooter would be more problematic.

To be fair, I should point out that I only weigh 150 lbs (70 kg). A heavier rider might have a bit more sluggish performance. But I can still compare it to other scooters I’ve ridden and confirm that the speed and power are above average.

If I could make one performance improvement on the Zoom Stryder, it would be the braking. There isn’t a hand brake lever like on some scooters. Instead, a separate finger lever on the left handlebar, identical to the throttle, activates regenerative braking. This slows the scooter quite quickly, but likely isn’t enough for emergency stops. For actual mechanical braking, you step on the rear brake like the old school kids’ scooters.

I’ve never liked scrub brakes like these that simply rely on rubbing on the tire to stop. I prefer a disc or rim brake with a bicycle brake lever. I can get used to the foot brake, but I don’t feel it is as effective in an emergency scenario. In those cases, I want to be able to grab a handful of brake, not have to start searching for a foot brake behind me.

The tires on the Zoom Stryder are solid rubber. That means you never have to worry about a flat tire. Generally, solid tires make the ride rougher. However, the dual suspension smooths out the ride better than air-filled tires ever could.

Convenience

The most convenient thing about the Zoom Stryder, besides the awesome concept of a small electric vehicle itself, is how lightweight the scooter is. At just 10.8 kg (23.8 lbs), it’s light enough to carry around without discomfort. It’s not a featherweight, but how many other vehicles that can hit 18 mph weigh so little?

Folded, I can carry it for a few minutes before it starts to get tiring. In reality, most people won’t need to carry their scooter more than from the sidewalk to their office or from the street up to their apartment. For such short trips, carrying the scooter is definitely manageable.

The single most inconvenient thing about the scooter is probably the folding mechanism. You have to step on the red latch while simultaneously pushing the handlebars forward. At first I was trying to push the scooter forward quickly by the handlebars while stepping on the latch, but then found that I could keep one foot on the deck and use my toes to push the latch down while pressing forward on the handlebars. That seemed to work better.

The reason the folding mechanism can be hard to activate is because it has a big beefy pin that locks the scooter in the unfolded position. This makes me feel confident that it will never fold on me while riding. But in my opinion, it’s almost overbuilt to the point that the pin is so massive it can be tricky to release. But hey, I’d rather err on that side than the cheap, flimsy side. The scooter definitely feels like it’s not going to fall apart.

Summary

All in all, I think the Zoom Stryder is an excellent electric scooter. Sure, I’ve ridden better electric scooters, but those also cost twice the price. Speaking of price, the Zoom Stryder can be yours for 799, which is only 200 more than the flagship 599 Xiaomi M365 scooter used by Bird.

Considering you get full suspension and more speed in a lighter, more comfortable package, I think the extra 200 is a pretty good deal. Your wrist bones will thank you.

Feel the difference

The Jordaan GT is designed around you – you can feel it, from the rider-centric design to the power output that’s just so. You can feel it the moment you get on – and head off. And with front and rear racks included, simply stack up and go.

What’s the difference between Jordaan and Jordaan GT eBikes? − +

Good question. Jordaan is our lightweight front motor eBike with a single-speed gearing. It’s the perfect step-through commuter electric bike, agile in every urban environment, ideal for quick rides to and from work (and everywhere in between). Oh, and it’s super-responsive too.

Jordaan GT is a little heavier with a slightly larger frame The Mid-drive motor by Bafang, together with the Enviolo integrated hub provides a heavy power boost and full control when riding.

Tell me more about the Compact Bafang Mid-Drive Motor and gearing hub specs. − +

Ah, you must be a serious electric cycling tech-head. OK here goes.

The Jordaan GT has a powerful and silent Bafang H420 Mid-Drive Motor to spice up your commute, make hills feel flat and effortlessly get you up to speed. The Pedal-Assist system, with 5 levels of power-assist, keeps you in full control of the 250w output. The Enviolo seamless gearing and Gates carbon belt drive perfectly pairs with the mid-drive Motor, ensuring the smoothest ride, every time.

Can the battery be removed? Can I upgrade it so I can ride further? − +

First up, yes every LEKKER eBike has a removable battery, so you don’t have to take the whole Dutch eBike inside for charging. Plus, upgrading or replacing’s easy. Which brings us to question 2. Here are the battery specs for the Jordaan GT.

Standard: 375Wh (10.5Ah, 36V). Range: 40km – 70kmUpgrade: 500Wh (14Ah, 36V). Range: 65km. 100km

Can I take the Jordaan GT off road? − +

Go for it. You can take it on the road, off the road, on gravel and through light mud. All-purpose for everyday cycling (but the experience is far from same-old, same-old). But it’s probably best to stay off the mountains and hardcore mudtracks though.

Is the Bafang LCD display water-resistant? − +

Well, we’re not saying you can ride your LEKKER eBike into a canal or anything, but the intelligent LCD displays on all our Dutch electric bikes are protected against water, dust, oil and other non-corrosive material. They’re IP65 rated, which is a top-5 rating.

Can I tune my eBike motor so I can ride faster than 25km/h? − +

We’re not going to answer that because it would be a Very Bad Thing To Do. We want you and your fellow road users to stay safe. And we’re law-abiding people. So you need to know that riding tuned eBikes with a speed limit above 25km/h is against the law. It will void the warranty on your Dutch style eBike and your insurance coverage too. Plus, it can have serious legal consequences. Like we said, a Very Bad Thing.

But wait! Although your motor’s capped at 25km/h, your eBike won’t be gated. So if you feel the need for speed (and your legs are strong like Marianne Vos) you can pedal as fast as you want.

Does the Jordaan GT electric bike fit a baby seat? − +

It sure does. Our Jordaan is made for babies (as passengers – babies aren’t great at riding bikes). It is sturdy, light and comfortable – perfect for taking junior on an adventure. We don’t sell baby seats, but we can recommend the Bobike One, which fits perfectly.

Do the Thule Chariot multisport bike trailers fit the Jordaan GT? − +

Oh yes. The GT’s powerful high-torque Bafang M420 Mid-Motor is up to the task of hauling around your sprogs, dogs and, er, logs. The maximum combined tow rating is 45kg (trailer payload), so don’t let a mate clamber in, however funny it might seem at the time.

You’ll need to buy the additional Thule Internal Hub Hitch Adapter SRAM, M10x1.0 (Thule Part #20100798) for it to be secured onto the GT’s Enviolo Axle. This replaces the rear left-hand axle nut to allow the Thule EzHitch Cup to be fitted. Please make sure you follow all the installation instructions correctly. If you’re a bit nervous putting stuff together, we suggest getting help from your friendly neighbourhood bike professional.

What is the maximum load of the Jordaan GT? − +

The maximum load and riders weight of the Jordaan GT is 115kg.

How does the Motor Support Level work for the Jordaan GT? − +

The motor of your Jordaan GT assists you on different levels, regardless of how fast you are riding. The support of level 1 is 20%, level 2 equals 40%, level 3 assists you to 60%, level 4 is 80% and level 5 will give you 100% assistance if needed.

Maybe Amsterdam’s more your style?

Sleek, stylish, stripped back and smooth. With its diamond frame and quiet motor, the Amsterdam eBike range is the strong, silent type. Super-powerful and lightweight, it’s an amazing ride – whether you’re cycling through the city or flying even further afield. It’s a big world out there. On your marks, get set, go go go!

Zoom Electric Scooters: First Impressions (A Great Electric Moped / Scooter)

Zoom Electric Scooters lent us one of its electric scooters so we could test them and see how they stack up in the growing world of EVs in all shapes and sizes.

Electric cars are awesome, but they aren’t the best tool for every job. You can’t park them on the edge of the sidewalk while you run into a store for just a couple of things. Charging requires dedicated 220V plugs to get good charge rates. To carry just one person a short distance, carrying around 5-7 seats is overkill. On top of that, an electric car is just financially out of reach for many people.

That’s where electric scooters come in. No, I’m not talking about the toy-like electrified kick scooters you see for rent in many cities. When I say scooter, I’m talking about small motorcycles with space in front of you to rest your feet (in the photo).

One company making them, Zoom Electric Scooters, lent us one of its electric scooters so we could test them and see how they stack up in the growing world of EVs in all shapes and sizes.

Scooters Already Own The World Outside the US

In the US, scooters might not seem that useful, but if you check out a country that has widely adopted them, you’ll see just how damned useful they can be for geographically short trips. I spent some time living in Taiwan in college, and scooters are far more common than cars. People can park them under stairwells, up on the edge of the sidewalk, or in many other places that you couldn’t stash a car. are low enough for almost anybody to get one. Gas-powered scooters are cheaper to fuel, and cheaper to maintain than gasoline cars, after all.

In dense traffic, a lack of ability to get up to highway speeds really doesn’t matter. Sure, you could mash the pedal like you’re going to do a 0-60 run, but all you’ll do is get in an accident. For that reason, it doesn’t matter if your top speed is only 30-50 MPH, because you’ll only rarely go that fast. When you get there, they’re easier to park.

In such environments, scooters really shine when there’s a little space to exploit around cars. If cars are blocking the turn lane, you can just go around them and turn, for example. On top of that, Taiwanese cities allow two-wheeled vehicles to filter between the cars at an intersection and occupy a special box at the front. When the lights turn green, it’s not long before the cars are passing you again, but you’ll be weaving between them again at the next light.

Because they use so little energy, scooters were among the first vehicles to be widely electrified. Without expensive battery packs, special charging stations, the cost was right. Most scooter trips are short range, so it made sense even when lead-acid batteries couldn’t provide much range. By reducing maintenance to nearly nothing, it made little sense to NOT electrify them.

Now, with lithium-ion batteries getting cheaper, electric scooters can go dozens of miles before needing a charge. Scooters are ready to go beyond just the big Asian cities. But will they get a foothold in the US?

If Anybody’s Up to the Challenge, Zoom Is.

To get wide adoption in the US, it’s going to take something a little different than it takes in Asia. For one, we have a lot more sprawl in our cities, which means you’re going to need some real range. Zoom has us covered on that, though. With regenerative braking and a 1.5 kWh battery, the scooters claim a 60-mile range, with reports of some customers going further on a charge. I haven’t yet had a chance to test the range, but will do this for a subsequent article.

While the 30 MPH top speed isn’t going to get me on the interstate, it does have some real advantages. First off, a lower power vehicle like this doesn’t require registration in my state, or insurance. Also, I don’t need a motorcycle license (but a regular license is required). For neighborhood streets, though, it’s quick enough to potentially get a speeding ticket.

What it lacks in top speed, it more than makes up for in acceleration. The rear hub motor has some serious snap from a stop, and fairly quickly gets up to 20 MPH. Given that it’s a scooter, with small wheels and less of a gyroscopic stabilizing effect than a bicycle or motorcycle, the acceleration is enough to feel uncomfortable at first. To get from 2o-28 MPH takes longer, but it’s more than enough to stay out of the way of a car if you need to.

Like most scooters, the ride is rather supple. Combined with the heavily-cushioned seat, everything but a big pothole is going to feel like almost nothing. Comfort is definitely the goal with these, and Zoom did an excellent job.

Features Quality

Another thing that was great was how it arrived fully assembled, with the exception of the rear-view mirrors and a shade for the instrument cluster (which I didn’t install yet). It came on a freight pallet with a metal cage surrounding it. Unpacking was easy, and it took just a couple of minutes to get it ready to go.

One important thing to point out is that this scooter isn’t built like a toy. It’s got a lot of plastic, but it’s thick, heavy, durable plastic. Nothing on the vehicle feels like it’s going to break or fail, or that I have to be careful with it. This is a real scooter for real trips.

Controls were fairly straightforward. Everything is labeled with easily understood pictographs, and everything does what you’d expect it to do. The only unusual things (from a scooter perspective) was the “1-2-3” switch and the “D-R” switch. The numbers are for top speed and power, allowing you to conserve battery by limiting power. The D and R are for Drive and Reverse, allowing you to have a reverse gear–something unheard of with gas scooters.

The only weird thing I noticed is that the battery meter isn’t nearly as refined as the one in my Nissan LEAF. When it gets low, it will still read nearly full when sitting, but read empty when the throttle is twisted. You have to watch for fluctuations to determine whether the battery is getting low.

Lighting on the scooter is impressive. It has a daytime running lamp, with accent circles around the headlights like many late-model cars. Inside the circles are high beams and low beams, allowing the scooter to operate at night safely.

One really cool feature on the scooter is that it has an alarm with a key fob. Once set, any attempt to move the scooter sets off a loud alarm that will definitely get attention. Whether picked, rolled, or pushed, the sensitive alarm will go off. I have yet to see any false alarms, so it’s clearly not too sensitive. I also found that it’s easy to add a chain and padlock for extra security by running the chain between the kickstands while propped up on the rear one.

There’s a cup holder, but you’ll want a drink with a cap or lid. Next to it is a USB port to allow phone charging, and it’s probably a good idea to use the cup holder or run the charging cable to the underseat trunk.

Speaking of the trunk, it’s got plenty of room. There’s no gas tank and no engine, leaving room for a helmet, a purse, and probably more. Access to the trunk is accomplished by inserting the key and turning counterclockwise while pulling up on the seat, so items stored inside are locked up when you leave the scooter unattended.

cafe, cruiser, zoom, electric

The battery pack appears to be made up of 6 12-volt gel cells. Three of the cells are located under a removable lid under the storage compartment. The other three are set under the back of the foot platform, sticking out slightly below the rest of the bottom. With the batteries set this low, the scooter is actually more stable than the gas scooters I’ve driven.

There’s a knockout next to the lower battery that looks like it’s made for some sort of charging port, but on this model it’s covered in plastic and serves no purpose.

Stopping power is great. Not only does the scooter have regenerative braking, but it also has fairly beefy disc brakes, front and rear. I’ve yet to try a full-on panic stop, but it appears more than capable of sending me over the handlebars were I to pull just the front brake at full force. But then again, the low-slung batteries may prevent that. Either way, it has far more stopping power than it needs, which is a good thing.

Final Verdict

The Zoom scooter I got for review is a great scooter. It has plenty of power, is made well, and was very easy to get started with. It doesn’t seem like something that’s going to let me down anytime soon, and I’ve had zero issues running it.

The website lists it for sale at 2799, but is currently on sale for 1899. If that’s not within reach, the company also offers financing (see its website for details). This is actually a pretty sweet deal, even at 2799, because:

  • Very cheap to charge up (15-20 cents per dead-t0-full charge where I live)
  • Near zero maintenance
  • No motorcycle license required, no registration, and no insurance (at least where I live, YMMV)
  • Up to 60 mile range
  • Good construction
  • Good anti-theft features.

With all that, it’s a very cheap way to get around, and more than pulls its own weight. In fact, I’m going to be asking Zoom what it would cost me to keep this demo model. If you’re looking for an electric scooter or moped, this is a good one to get.
