What Factors Do I Need to Keep In Mind When Calculating Range?

When using a battery range calculator, riders need to keep in mind their own riding profile and environment. Factors like terrain type, rider weight, speed, and equipment all have an impact on the expected battery range. Additionally, understanding the basics of lithium-ion batteries will also help riders get the most out of their ebike batteries.

So, how do we calculate battery range? Under typical demands, 1 mile costs about 20 watt-hours (Wh). What is a watt-hour, you ask? A battery’s Power Density, the amount of power that can be generated by the battery with respect to its mass, is measured in watts per kilogram (W/kg), while the Energy Density, the amount of energy a battery can store with respect to its mass, is measured in watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg).

To calculate the watt-hours of your ebike battery, multiply the voltage (V) by the amp hours (Ah). Using Rad Power Bikes 7.5 lb. Lithium Ion battery as an example: 48V x 14 Ah = 672 watt-hours (Wh), which garners you an expected range of between 25-45 miles on a single charge. When attempting to calculate the range of your ebike battery on a single charge, many factors should be considered: speed, terrain, bicycle weight, level of pedal assist, usage of throttle, rider body weight, cargo weight, wind, cadence, regenerative braking capabilities, but most importantly. battery size.

Compared to the Bosch Ebike Range Assistant, our ebike battery calculator uses several of these factors to help you determine how far your ebike battery will take you on a single charge:

How Does Charging and Discharging My Battery Affect Its Potential Range?

Most ebike batteries will last for about 1000 charge cycles. Throughout its life, a battery’s range will decrease as the lithium-ion cells become depleted. This means that it’s important to monitor your battery charging and discharging levels to maximize your battery range over time. When discharging and recharging your ebike battery, you should always follow the manufacturer’s specified guidelines to get the most out of each cycle.

Weather conditions can play a significant role in the range of your ebike battery. Heat and humidity will shorten the range of your battery while cold temperatures can increase its range as lithium-ion batteries prefer low temperature environments. This is why it’s important to understand how weather conditions will affect the range of your ebike battery when calculating or estimating how far you can go on a given cycle.

What Other Features Should I Look for In a Battery Range Calculator?

Aside from weather predictions, you should also look for a battery range calculator that offers other features such as customizable settings that can be tailored to your riding style and the type of terrain you are planning to ride on. Additionally, some calculators use GPS data to calculate the route distance and battery consumption, which can be very useful when trying to get an accurate estimation of your ebike battery range.

Can any of the ebike batteries represented in our calculator tool really get up to 400 miles on a single charge? Obviously not, unless you’re willing to pedal the remaining 300 miles on your journey. While Tesla’s may be way cooler, they don’t perform very well on trails. So, if you’re serious about adding more riding time to your bucket list, start with understanding what will be required from your battery, your ebike, and you.

What is a Bosch Electric Bike Battery?

Bosch electric batteries are chemical lithium-ion batteries designed to be low weight with an ergonomic design for easier handling.

Continue reading to understand how a Bosch battery works and what makes a Bosch electric bike battery better than all of its competitors.

How Does a Bosch Electric Bike Battery Work?

Bosch designs various electric bike batteries to meet the needs of different e-bike manufacturing companies and brands.

The most commonly found Bosch lithium-ion batteries used in electric bikes usually have 300-Wh, 400-Wh, or 500-Wh sizes.

This battery range allows both heavy and lightweight electric bikes to cover greater distances while traveling at high speeds.

This is how the mechanism of a Bosch electric bike battery works:

  • When a person purchases an electric bike with a Bosch lithium-ion battery pack, they must first charge the battery to 100%.
  • This allows electric charge to flow through the 40 round cells of a Bosch battery and get stored as chemical energy.
  • When the rider begins to pedal their electric bike, the built-in motion sensors detect the rider’s pedaling motion and pass on the signals to the electric motor.
  • On receiving the signals, the electric motor automatically turns on and begins discharging the Bosch electric battery of its stored chemical energy.
  • The chemical energy is then converted to kinetic energy, with traces of heat energy as a byproduct.
  • The newly produced kinetic energy is finally transported to the electric bike’s tires via the built-in energy transmitters; thus, the e-bike picks up speed and gains momentum.

Most electric bikes with Bosch battery packs also come with a regenerative braking system, which allows the excess heat energy to be converted back to chemical energy for further use.

This way, the Bosch battery’s charging level goes up as the rider hits the brakes of their electric bike.

The table below demonstrates how much power each Bosch electric bike battery can offer, along with highlighting its average charging duration.

What Makes Bosch Better than Other Competing Brands?

Almost a Century of Battery Making Expertise and Experience

Buying an electric bike with a Bosch battery pack gives consumers great relief and satisfaction because of the significance and reputation the name Bosch holds.

A Bosch electric bike battery comes with a century of battery-making expertise and experience that not many brands can claim to offer.

The company has had ample time to correct all operational and technical flaws to produce an electric bike battery that delivers unmatchable levels of durability, resilience, and range.

Bosch Electric Bike Batteries Are Long Lasting and Highly Durable

One of the most outstanding qualities of a Bosch electric bike battery is its high durability and long lifespan.

In general, most electric bike batteries can maintain their quality and performance for 5 to 7 years.

On the contrary, a Bosch battery retains its charge storing capacity and performance for almost 10 to 15 years.

Due to this extensive lifespan, the battery can usually outlive the electric bike and a rider can reinstall the same battery into a new electric bike.

over, due to the battery’s resilience and low sensitivity, an electric bike owner is saved from having to incur expensive battery repair and replacement costs.

Bosch Electric Bike Batteries Are Found in Different Shapes and Sizes

Most electric bike manufacturing companies prefer getting their chemical batteries manufactured by Bosch as they can get a battery made precisely the way they want.

Electric bike manufacturers can choose a frame battery, a rack battery, an integrated battery, or a dual battery.

over, Bosch batteries come in unique shapes, such as cylindrical or triangular, to fit into all kinds of electric bike frames.

Bosch’s Intelligent Battery Management System (BMS)

One key quality that separates a Bosch electric bike battery from its competitors is the Battery Management System (BMS).

Unlike regular lithium-ion batteries that can sustain a lot of damage by poor charging practices, the BMS of a Bosch battery allows the battery to detect any potential systematic errors to protect the battery cells from overloading.

Hence, an occasional mishandling or improper charging incident will not significantly impact a Bosch electric bike battery’s quality or lifespan.

Bosch’s DualBattery Packs

To offer an electric bike owner an unparalleled range to make intercity traveling possible, Bosch has designed DualBattery packs that include two high-wattage batteries integrated to perform as one.

This battery pack doubles the electric bike’s charge storing capacity, increases the e-bike’s top and average speeds, and allows the rider to cover longer distances without worrying about finding a power source to recharge the battery.

over, the Bosch DualBattery packs can drastically decrease a rider’s range anxiety.

As a result, more people have started preferring electric bikes over gasoline-powered personal cars or public transport for their everyday commuting.

Bosch Batteries Come with Long Warranties

Lastly, all Bosch electric bike batteries come with a one-to-three-year warranty, allowing e-bike owners to get free battery repairs if unexpected damage or error arises.

Motor upgrades and a new addition to the Bosch Smart System family – The new Bosch Performance Line SX light ebike motor.

Bosch started the summer with a bang, introducing their first ever light ebike motor. The Performance SX tips the scales at just under 2 kg and delivers 55 Nm of torque, with a peak output of up to 600 watts. The new motor was designed to offer high performance at a low weight, and is suitable for a wide range of applications and different types of bikes, from gravel bikes to urban bikes and light eMTBs. We tested the new Performance Line SX in the European trail mecca of Finale Ligure and to find out what it’s capable of.

Starting this summer, the Smart System family will have two new members, the Active Line and Active Line Plus drive units, which are supposed to be the quietest motors in Bosch’s extensive portfolio. Both were developed for relaxed cruising in urban areas, which is partly due to the innovative sensor concept they employ. From autumn 2023, there will also be a new eShift electronic shifting system, which was designed to facilitate gear shifts, with the Smart System ensuring optimal shifting conditions at all times. For the time being, the eShift system will be compatible exclusively with Rohloff, 3X3 and Enviolo drivetrains.

Bosch’s new Smart System batteries and range extender

Bosch also expanded their range of compatible Smart System batteries, adding the new 400 Wh CompactTube 400 to the lineup, which currently consists of three variants with 750 Wh, 625 Wh and 500 Wh capacity, respectively. The CompactTube 400 was designed around the new Performance Line SX motor and weighs 2 kg, bringing the total weight of the new Bosch Performance Line SX drive system to just under 4 kg. Finally we’ll be able to see the first lightweight ebikes with a Bosch motor, from eMTBs to e-road and city ebikes. The German manufacturer has also introduced the new Power 250 range extender, which is compatible with all Smart System batteries and, as the name suggests, provides an additional 250 Wh capacity. The bidon-sized range extender can be secured directly to the bottle cage mounts with a bracket and weighs an additional 1.6 kg. Alongside their integrated batteries and range extender, Bosch have also presented a new frame battery, the PowerPack 400 Frame, and two rack batteries, the PowerPack 400 Rack and PowerPack 500 Rack. The rack batteries are slimmer than their predecessors and were designed with theft protection in mind. All new Smart System batteries can be combined with each other and used with DualBattery setups, which is particularly good news for touring riders who want to embark on multi-day expeditions in remote areas without charging infrastructure. The new, compact 2A Charger (2 Ampere) is the ideal solution for on-the-fly charging stops and can be easily stowed in a pannier. It’s around 25% lighter and 40 % smaller than the existing 4A Charger.

The new Bosch Purion 200, Kiox 500 and Mini Remote drop bar – the new Bosch displays and remotes for the 2024 season

After introducing the Mini Remote and top-tube integrated System Controller last year, Bosch are releasing more new remote and display solutions for MY 2024: The Mini Remote is now also available for drop-bar bikes.

The Purion 200 display forms a unit with the bar-mounted remote. The small display shows key information, like the battery charge status and current support mode, as well as the elapsed time and distance covered. The ambient light sensor adjusts the brightness of the coloured LEDs to the environment for optimal readability. The Purion 200 can be used in combination with a bigger Bosch display, like the Kiox 300. For example, you could use the larger display of the Kiox 300 to display navigation data, while showing the remaining range and assistance level on the Purion 200. Bosch also unveiled the new Kiox 500 display, which is the new bigger sibling of the Kiox 300. At 2.8 inches, it is around 40 % bigger than the Kiox 300 and, and features audible alerts when you deviate from the planned route – provided the navigation function is active.

customisation options via the eBike Flow-App

Bosch also thought about the connectivity geeks, updating the eBike Flow app with countless new functions. For starters, you can customise your Kiox 300 and 500 displays to suit your needs and preferences. Using the app, you can choose the display’s content and organise the layout, fitting up to three data fields onto the same screen – for example pedalling cadence, speed and gradient. Apart from allowing you to customise the display layout, Bosch also added training-relevant information to the stats, like burned calories, allowing ambitious riders to keep an eye on their achievements and further improve their fitness level. There are also several new safety features, because the Flow premium subscription service also includes Bosch’s eBike alarm. As soon as someone touches or moves the bike when the eBike Alarm is active, the system sets off an alarm and transmits its location to the Bosch eBike Flow app, even when the motor is turned off. If this isn’t enough to deter the thief, the alarm gets increasingly louder, and the e-bike notifies its owner via a message on the smartphone, sharing its current position. However, this function requires a ConnectModule and an optional subscription. Bosch offer a one-year free trial and charge either € 4.99 per month or € 39.99 per year thereafter.

Bosch are expanding their Smart System with several new hardware and software solutions. With the Performance Line SX drive system, the German manufacturer has finally joined the light ebike party, significantly broadening the Smart System’s range of applications. The modular system offers bike manufacturers plenty of options and provides riders with a high level of connectivity.
