Simply said, a gravel bike is a combination of a road bike (happy on smooth pavement) and a mountain bike (happy playing rough and tumble in the mud). Mellow single tracks, farm roads, gravel, crushed cobblestones, rough city streets, tarmac — whatever. A gravel bike is a machine that’s capable of performing on various surfaces, while sustaining comfort. Gravel bikes like the Discover have 650b wheels with wider tires that run at a lower pressure, a slightly more upright posture, and thicker forks that can handle rougher roads. These small changes give a road bike like performance with more comfortable riding on un-paved roads. Gravel bikes like the Discover also have braze-ons (holes for screws) for connecting front and rear racks, and are a popular choice for road cyclist on long rides, bike messengers, urban commuting with bags or kids, bike camping, and long distance touring. It is important to note that a gravel bike is NOT a mountain bike and does not have shocks and cannot take jumps, or big drops. It is still a road bike and intended for on-road use. The definition of what it means to be on-road is just much broader then your typical road bike, giving you the freedom to explore some wild and beautiful places.
Why are Hilltopper Bikes 1/2 the price of other e-bikes on the market? Because we sell direct to you, the customer. Our mission is to create a sustainable future, two wheels at a time and we do that by making e-bikes affordable for you. We intentionally don’t sell through dealers, distributors, or retailers because that way of selling means a higher price tag for you. We build our kits and bike wheels with love and care here in Seattle and sell direct to you, so you won’t see the large retail markup that would be present if you were buying from a third party. That way you’re always getting the best deal on your electric bike.
It depends on how fast you want to go, and how steep the hill. The 36v, 350 watt kits and bikes can go 20 mph with minimal pedaling. This is the legal limit in most of the US for e-bikes so it’s enough power for most bikes. This is a great power for steeper hills, faster commutes carrying bigger loads. It’s like having two Soul Cycle instructors also pedaling for you. The 36v, 250 watt Sprinter kit can go 16 mph with minimal pedaling on flat ground, but they perform best as a boost to your pedaling with pedaling required on hills. Perfect if you are looking for an added boost to your ride at an affordable price. Cuts your commute time by 25%, flattens out that hill by 50% puts a smile on your face. The 48v, 750 watt Summit kit can go 20 mph with minimal pedaling. This is the legal limit in most of the US for e-bikes. The motor could go faster, but it is limited at 20 mph for safety and to remain street legal in the US (unlimited it could go 30 mph). The 750 watt motor can carry large loads up steep hills and accelerates quickly. Perfect if you are looking to cruise consistently at 20 mph over varied terrain or climb absurdly steep and long hills while hauling groceries. It’s more power then you might need. But its a lot of fun and gives you the piece of mind that you can accelerate out of any sticky situation.
All Hilltopper electric bikes and kits have a maximum speed of 20 mph. This keeps them street legal and compliant with state laws and city ordinances in the US. For choosing a power system, here’s what to keep in mind: The 36v, 350 watt kits (Horizon) can go 20 mph with minimal pedaling. This is great for steeper hills, faster commutes carrying bigger loads. The 36v, 250 watt kits (Sprinter) can go 15 mph with minimal pedaling on flat ground, but they perform best as a boost to your pedaling with pedaling required on hills. Perfect if you are looking for an added boost to your ride at an affordable price. Cuts your commute time by 25%, gives a boost up hills puts a smile on your face.

Best folding electric bikes 2023
Best folding electric bike for rough terrain
With a unique single-sided frame and carbon fork, the GoCycle G4 delivers a Smart design and smooth ride.
The relatively long wheelbase and relaxed head tube angle mean the G4 is far removed from the twitchiness often associated with small-wheeled folding bikes. Despite the long wheelbase, the bike still folds up small and can fit in the boot of a small car.
GoCycle has its own motor system that monitors speed and cadence to determine how much power assistance you need. However, there’s also a button on the handlebar to override this.
We found the motor and bike to be nippier than some of the best electric bikes and well suited to city rides. But, due to the chunky tyres, suspension and traction control, it can also tackle rougher terrain.
The only thing holding the G4 back is its high price.

Best value for money electric folding bike
The MiRider One is a well-styled folding bike with electric assistance. Warren Rossiter / Immediate Media
- £1,300 as tested
- Range up to 35 miles
- Boost button to add extra assistance
- Singlespeed only
With a quick fold via a central hinge, the MiRider One pairs funky looks with a fun, practical ride. Handy features such as a skate wheel to help you push its 18.7kg weight around when folded also help make this a winner.
You only get a singlespeed gear on the MiRider One, but with the added electric assistance, that’s enough to tackle most hills around town.
Hit the ‘boost’ button and you’ll get a turbo charge to help you get away from the lights and up steeper gradients. Cable disc brakes help you stop safely and the keen price is appealing, too.

Best folding electric bike for commuting
MiRider’s One GB3 folding commuter ebike is a refined version of the original MiRider One. David Caudery / Our Media
While the previous MiRider One is still available, MiRider has refined the design and improved the specification to create the One GB3.
The magnesium alloy frame has an air-filled shock absorber for comfort and enough adjustability to fit tall and short riders.
The folding ebike has a rear-hub motor powered by a 7Ah/252Wh battery with a claimed range of 45 miles, which is more than ample for the short distances you’ll likely ride on this bike.
The bike has a maintenance-free belt drive and three gears that, along with the motor, helped our tester get over a 14 per cent climb.
It’s fun to ride and feels stable at speed. The short wheelbase and small wheels make weaving through traffic a breeze.
With an easy-to-fold design, hydraulic disc brakes, comfortable saddle and a kickstand, the bike is well-considered and, ultimately, better value than some of its better-known rivals.

Best ebike conversion kit for Bromptons
The Cytronex kit enables you to convert a non-assisted Brompton into an electric bike. Russell Burton / Immediate Media
- £1,295 as tested (Cytronex conversion kit only), Brompton sold separately
- Convert a standard Brompton to an electric folding bike
- Lightweight system with smooth power delivery
- 29 miles of range with 300m ascent in testing
This one’s an outlier because it’s an electric folding bike comprised of a standard Brompton and an ebike conversion kit from British company Cytronex.
However, if you’re already a Brompton owner, or want to choose a different model than the foldable ebikes on offer as standard, then this is a Smart choice. It’s worth noting that fitting the kit will invalidate your Brompton’s warranty though.
The kit contains a new front wheel with e-motor hub, battery pack, charger, wiring loom and bottle-cage style mount. The price also covers fitting and, rather than using the strap-on battery mount, Cytronex will add bottle bosses to the frame for a neat and secure fit.
The battery can remain in place when folding and adds only a couple of kilograms to the overall weight.

The result is an efficient system that retains the lightweight handling of a standard Brompton, though you need to take care not to unweight the front wheel on steeper roads.

Brompton Electric H2L 2-Speed
Brompton’s Electric H2L bike is the result of a partnership with the company behind the Williams Formula 1 team. Russell Burton / Immediate Media
- £2,725 as tested
- Powerful assistance and clever battery system
- Would benefit from a bar-mounted control
- Claimed range of 20-45 miles from 300Wh battery
Brompton partnered with Williams Advanced Engineering (of Formula 1 and Formula E fame) to develop a bespoke system for its electric folding bike. It’s made up of a front-hub motor and a Smart-looking battery, housed in a Cordura bag. The total bike weight is 17.43kg, compared to a claimed 11.35kg for a standard Brompton.
The system is operated by two buttons on the battery, but we’d prefer a bar-mounted control, or the ability to use Brompton’s app (and a phone mount) to cycle between settings.
Brompton’s motor provides a punchy ride, but it does feel like overkill in some situations, even if it’s fun to get a head start on other riders at traffic lights. The middle of the three settings provides the best balance of power and range.
You need to remove the battery before folding, but that’s simple enough, and the charger is nice and compact.

Eelo 1885 Disc Explorer Pro
- £1,499 as tested
- Packs down neatly
- Won’t fit tall riders
- Fixed battery
The Eelo 1885 Explorer Disc Pro is a decent electric folding bike now with mechanical disc brakes in place of V-brakes.
For nipping on and off a train, the 1885 is ideal because it’s easy to carry in folded form. There’s a rear rack but the wheels are too small to attach panniers.
The Eelo 1885 Explorer Disc Pro falls short of its claimed range and you can’t remove the battery to recharge.
The 1885’s short wheelbase will probably make taller riders will unstable.

Emu Mini
The Emu Mini folding electric bike makes for a good city commuter. Warren Rossiter / Immediate Media
- £999 as tested
- Well priced and compact size
- Three speeds and disc brakes
- Not so good for taller riders
For £1,000, the Emu Mini packs a punch above its diminutive size.
It’s light for an ebike at 17.7kg, and its 16in wheels come with chunky tyres, so it can handle more than just city streets. The 3-speed gearing helps you get around fast, and you get disc brakes for reliable stopping.
The range is a bit limited: we got just 13 miles, although there’s a £100 battery upgrade that will improve on that. Otherwise, this is a bike for short commutes.
Still, with the battery located in the seatpost, it’s easy to take away for recharging, and the charger is compact enough to carry with you if you need a top-up at work before turning for home.

The Engwe Engine Pro 750W bucks the trend for electric folding bikes, packing a lot of power and weighing 35kg.
In addition to the punchy motor and fairly good range, the Engwe Engine’s brakes, display and control function well.
Although the Engwe Engine Pro 750W is fun to ride, our reviewer thought the front and rear suspension are unnecessary and only add to the bike’s excessive weight.

Buyer’s guide: what to look for in a folding electric bike
Folding electric bike motor systems
Brompton’s removable battery packs are held at the front of the bike. Oliver Woodman / Immediate Media
The most common electric bike motor for powering folding ebikes is a hub motor either in the front or the rear wheel, powered by a battery that’s often built into the frame. That has the advantage of a tidy, weatherproof package, but may limit the battery size and hence range, and add weight.
Another option for the battery is to make it removable. That’s the way Brompton has gone, with a pack that clips to the front of the bike so it can be carried separately. It also means you can take your battery somewhere convenient to charge it, while leaving your bike locked up or in the garage/bike shed.
Some internal batteries are removable too; that’s how the battery works in the GoCycle GX and GXi.
Electric bike laws in the UK and EU stipulate that the motor in a standard electric bike has to provide no more than 250 watts of power output, and most ebike motors, including those in folders, will provide up to this level of assistance.
Folding electric bike gearing
Some folding ebikes will only have a single-gear ratio. With the assistance from the motor to start you off, that may well be enough if you have a shortish, flat commute.
For longer, hillier rides, or for leisure use, you may want some extra gears. Hub gears are popular because they’re out of the way and less likely to get damaged than a derailleur system when carrying or moving the folder.
Our guide to electric bike maintenance has more tips on how to look after electric bikes. You’re unlikely to leave an electric folding bike unattended, but electric bike insurance is still advisable.
Hub gears may range from a simple 2- or 3-speed system, up to eight or more gears. Adding gearing also adds weight, and the cabling for the shifters adds complexity to the design.
Wheel size
A folding ebike will have small wheels, to make for a compact bundle once it’s folded. The classic Brompton has 16in wheels, a size used by many other folders.
Other brands, such as Tern and GoCycle, use 20in wheels. Their larger size helps a bit with rolling resistance and they’ll ride more smoothly over road imperfections, in compensation for increased weight and a larger folded size.
Folded size
Folded size and ease of folding are other things to think about. If you’re planning a commute that also includes public transport, you’ll want a folding ebike that packs up as small as possible, so you can get it onto busy trains or up awkward steps on buses.
That’s where a design with an integrated battery comes in handy because it won’t get in the way of the fold. Brompton’s solution of a separate battery pack also works here. Although there’s a second piece of kit to carry around, the folding mechanism and compact folded size aren’t compromised.
Another option, used by GoCycle and others, is to enable you to part-fold the bike, so you get a package that you can push or pull around using the seat as a handle. It’ll take up more space than a fully folded machine, but has the advantage that you don’t need to fully lug around the bike’s often substantial weight.
MiRider’s clever design, meanwhile, has a skate wheel on the bottom of the bike, to make manoeuvring the folded package much easier.

reviews for M-E1
I’ve been a Montague fan for many years. I had an MX that I rode for 10 years. Great bikes. This is my first ebike. I absolutely love it. The ride is so smooth. It basically amplifies the force that I push on the pedals with – and it is so quick! I switched out the seat to a more comfortable one, but otherwise everything else has been perfect. I would definitely recommend it.
Hey Montague – thanks to you guys for making this great bike. I’ve been riding it everywhere for the last few weeks, and it is incredible. YOur support staff – I’ve spoke with Jonathan and Liza, are great – and helped me understand a few things with the motor system. Keep it up!
Got the me-1 to go in our converted Ford Transit. I wanted an ebike in order to ride the the areas we visit but could absolutely not leave it out on a bike rack. We end up parking in some pretty random locations when traveling and it would not be safe out there. Space is super limited in the van so a folder was the only option. This one fits well enough toward the back without getting in the way of our sleeping quarters or kitchenette. The pedal assist not jerky at all like I’ve felt on cheaper e-bikes, so you get used to it and sort of forget you’re getting the assist sometimes. It’s just feels like effortless normal bike riding. Even up some pretty steep hills it’s been great. 5/5
I’ve been reading about these bikes for a while, and was planning on getting one of the regular Montagues. Then I heard about the new electric bike, and it definitely sounded perfect for me. I’m 65 years old, and my legs aren’t quite up to riding long distances any more. So I got the new electric one, and it is a real hoot. If you’ve never ridden an electric bie, it is so nice. I haven’t ridden a lot of them, but this is really a game changer for me. Went almost 20 miles yesterday, and I am not a strong rider by any means. Great bike!
So far so good! My first electric bike, and very much worth it so far. The ability to fold it up and wheel it around is what finally made me pull the trigger on an ebike. I bring it into work every day, wheel it right into the building and on the elevator. Find myself wanting to ride to lunch or around town on weekends too, which I never did with a normal bike. Loving my ME1!
SO glad invested in this over a cheaper-made e-bike. super easy to fold. goes faster than i’d ever need. very stable, and fun to ride. already recommended to several friends and coworkers
Got this bike to get out of the house during the pandemic. Was expecting more exercise – this bike makes you feel like you’re barely pushing at all but still an absolute blast to ride, been getting out of the house and exploring so much more since I got it. Helps that I’m able to fold it up stow it away at home too. A real game changer!
I bought this bike for my husband for Christmas. Unfortunately it was late in arriving at our bike shop, so I couldn’t put it under the tree. But it arrived (finally) last week, and he really loves it. Now wer’e thinking I should get one too (I’m going to need to dip into our piggy bank!) so I can keep up with him. A very nice experience all around.
Awesome bike! I’ve bought several Montagues before and this one folds in a totally new way. Used to the old way but was able to get the hang of this in minutes and it’s even more convenient. I’ve been riding it into work every day and keeping it right under my desk. Range is good too. Was a bit worried because it’s heavier than any bike I’ve owned before, but the electric boost is powerful enough to make the bike feel super light when riding. Overall definitely a worthwhile purchase, has really changed my morning commute for the better. Thanks!

Only been riding my ME1 for about 3 weeks but I’m impressed so far. Other folding e-bikes I looked at were cheap straight from China with no name motors and mostly small wheels. Getting one from a trusted brand and having a Shimano system is by far worth the higher price tag in my book. I had some questions on settings with the STEPS motor and was able to get a quick response from Shimano customer support. That bodes well for any support in the future. Very smooth riding and it fits in the back of my VW without issue. I haven’t had a chance to fully test the range but I haven’t noticed it go below 50% battery even after riding 20 miles (I usually charge after every ride). Shimano claims something like 70 miles on a charge for this system which I’m sure is “best case scenario” but it seems plausible given my experience. For anyone looking to add panniers, I’m using the Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic, which uses their QL2.1 mounting system. It works great with the built rack on this bike. And I have to mention that the lights are super bright! I will update with another review after I’ve had the bike longer.
Great bike. I’d highly recommend it. Got mine yesterday, and the quality of the build is really impressive. Nice fit and finish to it all. I like the internal cable routing – so they fold right with the frame. Fits in my Toyota Camry trunk. Charging is easy. The Shimano motor is quiet, and does a nice job going up hills. If you’re thinking about this bike, check out the video I saw on EBR: https://electricbikereview.com/montague/m-e1/. I saw that video and was sold
Liking the ride. One thing I was skeptical about is the folding hinge, since it’s different from the design on Montague’s other bikes, but I don’t feel any flex even if I stand and really try to torque on it side to side. The low step frame is appreciated on a bike like this too. It’s definitely made with comfort in mind – handlebars are high enough that you’re sitting up, it’s easy to get on and off, the shocks help with bumps. The low step makes it work for me and my wife who has used it a few times even though she’s shorter than me. Happy with the purchase.
I’ve been a Montague rider for years (as one of my many bikes). I have several bikes from different brands (custom built road bike, Specialized full suspension, a steel CX bike, etc) but for folding they seem to have the best frame design and can offer something that actually rides like the bikes I’m used to. I got an early Paratrooper model back in 2005, later upgraded to a Navigator when they came out with the new bikes around 2015/2016, and now that they have a folding e-bike I had to nab one. It’s a pretty nifty design. Unlike their other bikes the front wheel stays on during folding so it’s VERY easy to fold. Shimano is Shimano so no surprise that they built an e-bike system that performs well. It might be a bit underpowered for some people (I have a friend with a 1000 watt ebike with a throttle), but if you want something that will still give you the experience of riding a bike but provides some nice assistance, a 250w mid-drive is enough. It feels like I’m a stronger cyclist than I am, but I don’t lose the feeling of BEING a cyclist.
Found this bike on an e-bike review website, never had an e-bike before but after doing some research this one seemed to be the best all around. Got it about a week ago and REALLY loving it! Way more comfortable than I was expected, very fast as well and really easy to ride (and to fold). Don’t fold it every day since I ride the full distance to work here in Austin but when I want to take it somewhere (on a road trip/future vacations in the car) it’s easy to fold. Pretty amazing that you can just take it anywhere like that. Love this bike! Looking forward to getting one for my son as well.
Everything works perfectly. This bike rides incredibly well and that STEPs system (in my opinion) is the most intuitive/responsive/quiet of the other eBikes I sell/service by Bosch, Bafang, and a number of other proprietary systems. I was surprised on how solid the M-E1 felt, it felt more solid than several non-folding eBikes I’ve ridden. Terrific bike!
I made the purchase for my father and it was totally worth it and the customer service has been so helpful. My father is a whole new man on this bike he really enjoys his rides and goes really far and zips around like he was 20 years younger.
Finally got my replacement bike. The first one my bike shop showed me looked like it had been run over by a truck. The bike is awesome, but I can’t give them a 5 star because it took FOREVER to get one.
For some context: this is my first E-Bike, I’ve put a little over 700 miles on it as I write this and I was a novice bike commuter/cyclist when I hopped on this bike the first time. I use this bike mainly for my commute that’s 26 miles round trip. The motor itself is amazing, it’s powerful and doesn’t feel janky when you’re stopping and starting. It also makes you feel like you’re pedaling and putting in the effort on the bike which was important to me. Hills just melt away, stopping for red lights is no longer a pain of having to accelerate again and it really helps keep you motivated on longer commutes. I’ve biked with rain, ice and in the cold and have had no issues at all with any conditions. The tires are extremely high quality, I bike mostly in the pothole ridden hell that is NYC and North Jersey and I’ve had no flats whatsoever even after riding over some glass and large rocks. Overall the bike is built well and can take punishing potholes without the folding mechanisms ever feeling loose and everything about the bike lends itself to a great riding experience. The battery tends to last me the whole 26 miles on high with just a little bit of charge (like 1-2 miles left) left but my commute has fairly ridiculous elevation changes, lots of stops and starts, and just lots of things that would wreck an ebike’s battery so other folks may get luckier with it than I have. This bike has also made me fall in love with cycling and given me the confidence to ride on roads and now I own a gravel bike (n1) :). I do have a few minor nitpicks: 1. The rear light doesn’t appear to have been glued on with the strongest adhesive in the world and it hangs pretty far outside the frame. At one point I bumped it on my door frame and it came slightly loose and thought nothing of it. At some point in my next couple of commutes it appears to have bumped itself off with all the potholes. (I really do need to figure out a replacement…). In a possible next version of this bike I think the light should be flush with the frame so possible bumps on the side won’t spell the end of the rear light. 2. The handlebar folding mechanism did come loose for me once or twice. This isn’t a huge deal as the fix is actually really easy (there’s a small metal bolt you can turn to tighten it!) but the manual doesn’t have that information well documented. It just says go to your LBS which is fine but my LBS (and most) will not have exact experience working on this bike’s mechanisms so they know just as much as me. I think having a blurb in the manual about tightening the mechanism would be amazing or even a YouTube video! I’ve found that it needs to be tense enough to hold itself tight over big bumps but not tense enough that you can’t push it in. 3. This really is just a quibble but the stock seat is fairly uncomfortable. I thought I’d get used to it as getting a cushioned bike seat can also lead to problems but after I got another bike with another stock seat and this one is actually just really uncomfortable for very long distances. It really isn’t bad unless you’re doing a serious amount of time on the bike. Shorter errands I’ve done have been fine but by the end of my commute I’m definitely feeling the lack of comfort. Even after all these nitpicks I think this bike is a 5/5, the high quality components for the motor/drivetrain/brakes/tires and the quality of the bike’s build really makes you feel capable of taking on longer rides.

Good for riding. I got it within 5 days, fast delivery!
I bought it half a month ago, it’s good as an about 1000 Euro electric bike. It was only 25km/h when I got it, but you can unlock the speed to 32km/h so I don’t need to worry about the speed limit regulation. (Well, if you’d like to go with 25km/h, it’s also ok, but I prefer faster hh). So far so good, the after-sale service is good.
Have been riding the bike for a week now and it been a pleasure to be off with all the sweat when cycling on a normal bike. This bike has made life easier.
Absolutely love the bike it’s perfect and well worth the money,I use it to commute to work
Leuke vouw-e-bike. Schrijfremmen, vering alles zit erop.
This is a brilliant bike and the customer service was great!
Its so damn fast. Great enrry level emtb. Very smooth to ride. And the pedal assist feature is so fun to mess with. Bike rides that would leave you sweaty and legs full of lactic acid are a breeze now. Climbing up hill is a non isue. The range is somewhat small if you keep the assist maxed out but it charges very fast too. 2021 is a great buy. Ill probably buy another one down the line that is even faster and more range. Very addictive. Cant go back to biking normal anymore. Park trails feel like a roller coaster
Bike was damaged by local courier, without any problems they shipped me a new one right away. Fantastic service. Bike came in in mint condition, was easy to assemble, and is a lot of fun. Happy with my purchase. 🙂
Apart from all the main features, the cut-out sandal is my favorite for comfortable riding.
The samebike customer service ist very kind and professional. The E bikes from Samebike are affordable and well built. My next Bike will be from Samebike again.
War schon öfters unterwegs mit dem Fahrrad, fährt sich sehr angenehm, lässt sich sehr gut einstellen und ist optisch sehr schön. Ich glaube das man für weniger Geld nirgendwo ein besseres e bike finden kann.

This 660 folding electric mountain bike surprised the heck out of me
Electric bicycles come in a wide range of price and quality. From 10,000 super premium electric bicycles to 400 specials, I’ve pretty much ridden the gamut. And while the high-end electric bicycles are nice, I think that budget electric bicycles are perhaps more important because they open the door for first-time e-bike converts.
The latest budget electric bicycle I’ve been riding is the 660 Ancheer folding electric mountain bike. And believe it or not, this bike really surprised me.
Some people knock cheap electric bicycles for being more or less disposable. Others deride them as “bicycle shaped objects”.
But I think budget e-bikes have their place. Sure, these e-bikes aren’t going to hold up to years and years of abuse. But when used within their abilities (i.e. normal riding conditions), budget e-bikes have an important role. They allow first time e-bike riders to dip their feet into the pool, so to speak, without breaking the bank.
The Ancheer folding electric mountain bike does just that – it’s a solid e-bike with exactly zero unnecessary thrills. It doesn’t even have a real name. They don’t call it the Scrambler or the Rambler or the Jambler or anything else fancy. Its name is literally just “Ancheer folding electric mountain bike“.
It is comprised of exactly one cheap folding bicycle frame, one simple suspension spring, one simple springer fork, one motor, one battery and the bare minimum of other parts required to classify this thing as a bicycle, technically speaking.
Ancheer folding electric mountain bike performance
This isn’t a super powerful e-bike, and it doesn’t have any fancy features, but it works. And it works well.
When you twist the throttle, you take off. It’s not insanely powerful, but it will still bring a smile to your face.
The brakes certainly aren’t as nice as hydraulic brakes, and require more effort to engage than hydraulics, but they work just fine.
The pedal assist is also nice for when you want to get a workout. With 15 miles of range on throttle-only operation, switching to pedal assist can help eek out more range.
The suspension works, but there isn’t any true dampening. That means you’re just riding around on springs. On a real full suspension e-bike (i.e. a few thousand dollars) you get actual oil-dampened shocks. Those absorb bumps and dampen the shock. With springs, the bike bounces a few times after bumps, with the energy dissipating through the spring stretching and compressing.
That’s not as comfortable as true dampening suspension, but nicer than no suspension at all. For city riding, where you’re hopping curbs and hitting pot holes, this is about all you need.
You might have noticed that the wheels look a bit odd. They aren’t spoked, like most bikes. Instead, they are molded rims. That doesn’t leave a lot of room for repair if you even bang it hard, but it removes the maintenance and failure issues related to spoke tension.
I spent a few years working in an e-bike shop doing repairs, and one of the most common failures we saw on cheap e-bikes was spokes loosening or breaking over time from the motor power. By removing the spokes entirely, Ancheer removed the associated problems.
Is it a true mountain bike?
No, no it’s not. The Ancheer folding electric mountain bike is an urban mountain bike. What that means is this will be a more comfortable bike for smoothing out road shock, but it’s not really optimized for actual trail riding.
Of course that didn’t stop me from trying it out on trails. And the Ancheer folding electric mountain bike will work off-road. I climbed trails, bounced off roots and stumps, and basically gave it a decent mountain-biking experience. The bike handled it, but it was not what I would call a comfortable ride.
But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a place in the electric bicycle ecosystem. I did 90% of my testing for the Ancheer folding electric mountain bike on-road in bike lanes and on surface streets. That’s where this bike truly excelled.
If you’re looking for an inexpensive grocery getter or a recreational e-bike for tootin’ around town, this would be a prime candidate. The suspension is enough to make the ride a bit more comfortable, and you can’t beat the price.
Plus, the folding aspect makes it great for fitting into a normal sized car. It should be easy to bring to your local trail or park if you don’t live nearby. Or if your train or subway only allows folding bicycles on board, then you’d be all set without having to downgrade to a folding e-bike with small wheels.
Final verdict
This is a cheap e-bike. Its components aren’t high end and nothing about it is fancy. But I put around 100 miles on it and the bike is holding up just fine, even with 10 miles or so of off-road testing.
I wouldn’t expect this bike to last for years of daily use, but as a weekend warrior, it should be fine.
The Ancheer folding electric mountain bike does have a few weird quirks. The first is the handlebar mounted battery. It saves space for the folding mechanism, but looks odd. Fortunately it has very little effect on handling because it is mounted so close the head tube’s pivot point. It does raise the center of gravity of the bike a bit, but the difference is small compared to how much you raise the bike’s center of gravity.
The second is the seat. Oh man, you’ll want to replace the seat with an alternative quickly. Even a cheap 18 seat will be better. Or get a 10 slip-on gel cover. Just do something, because the stock seat is a rock. I wanted to leave it on the whole time for the sake of a fair review, but boy is my keister singing.
So all in all, I’d rate this bike a solid 7/10. It’s not great, but it’s definitely good. And for anyone who is fine with good, you’ll be happy with the Ancheer folding electric mountain bike.

[Update: looks like Ancheer has temporarily sold out of the bike, but their 615 electric bicycle (non-folding) that we also reviewed is still available!)
