Let’s start with the GoTrax GKS. Available for just £139.90, this is a great scooter for younger riders.
The 150W motor allows a top speed of 7.5 mph which is just fast enough to make them the coolest kid on the block, but not too speedy they’ll be at risk of falling off and hurting themselves.
If they do find the top speed too much, it’s easy to stop thanks to the pressure sensor brake. What does this mean? Well, the foot deck features two buttons, one at the back and one at the front. To stop the scooter, take your foot off the back button to kill the motor and press down on the wheel brake to halt it completely.
Those buttons also make sure the scooter will never take off before your child’s ready. For the scooter’s motor to engage, both buttons need to be pressed at the same time. This way, your child can step on the first button, secure their balance, and give the scooter a kick to get going, before pushing the second one to engage the motor.
Having an assisted kick start is much safer than an automatic start system. It means the scooter only engages when your child is ready and not before so they’re less likely to lose their balance and take a spill.
We’ve all had that one toy we never wanted to stop playing with, and the GKS is a solid contender for this sort of attention. Firstly, I’ve got to mention how cool these scooters look. Available in pink or blue, their vivid design is sure to catch the eye of even the pickiest kids out there. The curved handlebars and low-lying foot deck also provide great stability so staying balanced is easy.
Similarly to adult scooters from Segway, the ZING E8 is made from aerospace-graded aluminium alloy. This is both durable and lightweight, and as a result, the scooter only weighs 8 kg. It’s extremely portable too. Unlike the GKS, it can be folded, so storing it in the boot of your car won’t be an issue.
The E8’s 130W motor allows your kids to reach a moderate top speed of 8.6 mph. Does this sound a little fast to you? Don’t worry, Segway has already thought ahead. The E8 comes with three riding modes: safety, cruise, and throttle.
The safety setting is perfect for beginners, as speed is limited to 6.2 mph so your kids can get to grips with the basics. When they feel more confident, they can move on to cruise mode. This setting doesn’t require the throttle but instead uses your child’s starting kick to move into a constant glide. The more power behind the kick, the faster the scooter goes! If you have older children, or they’re more confident riders, switch into the third setting to unlock the throttle and hit the top speed.
This scooter is suitable for children between the ages of 6 and 12, but the inclusion of three riding modes makes it a particularly good option for younger children. The different levels allow them to get to grips with the basics of riding before moving onto faster settings and gives them more control over the scooter.
Segway knows that safety is the most important factor when it comes to kids’ scooters, which is why the ZING E8 comes with a triple braking system. Just so you know, most adult scooters only have two brakes, which makes this extra impressive. How to Choose an Electric Scooter for Kids
The Motor
The heart of an electric scooter is the motor, which powers the wheels. The amount of power varies between scooters — generally, heavier models have more power.

The Battery Life
The battery is another crucial component of a kid’s electric scooter as it’s what powers the motor. Scooter batteries are almost always rechargeable, but the quality varies greatly. Some will last years before they need replacing — others die or under-perform within a few months.
The best way to spot a high-quality battery is by checking how long it holds a charge. This will usually be in the manufacturer’s product information.
Or, you can look for lithium batteries — these are generally pricier, but they last much longer. While riding, they’re successful at maintaining a constant power output — Razor is a prime example of scooters using this type of battery.
Chain Drive
Chain drive, or chain-driven, is a term you’ll encounter a lot during your search, and it’s important too. The phrase implies that the motor connects to the wheel with a chain, much like a bike.
Not all electric scooters for kids are chain driven, though — some are belt driven, which works just fine for occasional use. Still, chain-driven is more reliable and has greater longevity. The most significant drawback of having a chain drive is noise.
Most manufacturers make their scooters as quiet as possible. However, if noise is a concern for you, then go for a belt-driven scooter. These are whisper quiet, but they won’t last as long as a chain.
The Brakes
There are two main types of brakes that are available on kids electric scooters. A foot brake uses your child’s pushing down on the rear fender brake to slow the scooter down, while a hand brake works just like a bike’s hand brake and can be engaged by your child squeezing the lever with their hand.
Hand brakes stop the scooter more quickly, whereas foot brakes are used for a gradual slow down.
For electric scooters, the hand brakes are either V or disc brakes, and they come for either the front or rear wheel. We recommend looking for rear wheel brakes.
When engaging a front-wheel brake, the scooter tends to stop abruptly, throwing the rider off balance or over the handlebar.
Rear brakes allow for a more controlled, gradual stop without disturbing the rider’s balance.
Frame and Fork
The frame and fork are two other components that tend to be overlooked, but they’re vital. These are what hold the scooter together — the main parts, where durability is a must.
Low-quality frames and forks mean a short lifespan for the scooter. Look for high-quality steel and a sturdy wide deck.
A good way to spot this is by looking at how much weight the scooter can carry. Higher weight limits usually indicate a durable frame and fork.
Maximum Speed
Some scooters can go fast. Expensive models with big motors can easily go up to 15 miles per hour, some even 20 miles per hour. If your child is younger than 8 years old or is inexperienced, this is too fast.
For small children, a maximum speed of 5 miles per hour will suffice. This is ample for a fun ride, while also allowing them to be able to stop easily and feel safe.
If your child has more experience, then 10 miles per hour might be better.
We do have one choice on our list for young children that can’t go faster than 1.75 miles per hour.
Maximum Weight Limit
You want to be sure the scooter can carry enough weight to grow with your child. Most kids electric scooters can easily do that. Cheaply made models, however, will have a low weight limit, making them only usable for a year or two.
Try your best to match your child’s age and weight to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Exceeding the weight capacity won’t necessarily break the scooter, but it will decrease its performance. It won’t go as fast or as far on a charge.
Charging Time and Range
Charging electric scooters isn’t time-efficient — some require up to 12 hours in the charger. That’s fine, as long as it provides enough time to ride. It’s not fun if you only have a 20-minute ride after a 12-hour charge.

I bought the Razor E100 kids scooter for my daughter’s 10th birthday about two months ago. At first my wife questioned my judgment in buying it for her. The first time she rode it; she lost control and had a minor crash (Whoops!).
However, she was not hurt although we did decide to give her more training on the electric kick scooter to build her confidence before taking it out on her own.
After this extra training, she picked it up again very quickly and we had no more problems at all!

Slowly but surely she became a pro. She loves the gift so much that even today before I sat down to write this review of the Razor E100 she was busy having lots of fun with it outside our house.
What You Get In The Box
Packaged in a neat box the scooter arrived in perfect condition safe for a few bruises on one corner of the box. I suspect that these bruises could have come about during the shipping process.
Nevertheless, the product was well secured inside and I did not see any signs of mishandling or breakage inside.
When I opened the box I first encountered the large foam separators, I suppose these are for protecting the scooter from damage during shipping. They do a great job because the scooter was 95% assembled at the factory and it completely protected inside.
Everything including tires, handle-bars, motor, twist grip throttle, handle-bar stem, charger, limiter, assembly tools etc. was intact. the fact that most of this scooter is assembled obviously makes it easy for us, ht parents and better for the child who doesn;t have to wait so long to get it built!
I put the battery to charge, inflated the tires, and after 20 minutes of assembling the entire system (using the manual that is provided in the box), we were good to go.
However, we had to wait 18 hours for the battery to charge. So i would recommend as soon as the package arrives that you charge the electric scooter battery straight away. Then build the scooter itself the next day. It was a little deflating to think that my child had to wait 18 hours before trying her best new electric scooter, so you can avoid this disappointment by planning ahead!
How to Construct the Razor E100
First you need to attach the handlebars by first opening the quick release, depressing the push button and then closing the lever.
Then you need to inflate the tires although I found the front tire to be already inflated (all the same I took the precaution to inflate it to the recommended PSI).
To charge the battery, I left it plugged into the socket for 18 hours.
Quality of Materials
The E100’s quality is grreat, all of the component pieces are well above average and overall the Razor has a great high quality feel.
The e100 scooter’s tires are well-built and capable of operating well even on bumps and rocks. This battery powered scooter is really sturdy and stable and quite heavy as a result, but I see that as a good thing.
The brake is sufficient, as this model is for kids and doesn’t go too fast (but of course as you know the effectiveness of the brake depends on the rider’s grip). On a scale of 10 I’d give it an overall quality rating of 8.5.
Safety Features
I found the scooter to work well on most dry surfaces. However, you need to be extra careful when letting your kid play with it when it’s wet as it might slide. I found both tires (especially the rear one) to be quite unstable unlike what you’d expect from a grooved rubber tire.
Brakes are intact, but care still needs to be taken while riding on steep slopes.
Wheels, brakes and handlebars
The 8 inch pneumatic front tire and polyurethane rear wheels make for a smooth ride. The hand-operated brakes use pull technology which allows for effective stopping when you need it. The handlebars are sturdy yet adaptable to riders of all sizes.
Quality of ride
So far we have no qualms with the quality of the ride. My daughter was able to master riding it after we had the hiccup when she first got on it. The second time around she got the hang of things almost immediately and has not even had any minor injuries since while having fun with her new gift.
The only tiny problem we’ve experience so far is that the scooter requires an initial push to get moving. It will not go from a standing start, even though you might expect it to. this is by design as it’s not a powerful electric scooter, just more of a kids toy one. Usually, one good kick push is all it takes to get the motor going enough to get the childs electric scooter started, so I don’t see it as a major inconvenience.
Battery Life

Now, Razor also do the E90 Electric Scooter which is a smaller version and not so good for up 10 year olds like this one. They also do the E100s which is a seated version (hence the ‘S’). And the larger and more powerful version are the Razor E200 model and also Razor E300 which is the most powerful and more sutable for adults.

I still think it’s too early to give the scooter’s battery a clean bill of health but if the signs so far are anything to go by then the battery is absolutely fine for the job it’s intended to do.
