Hubless Electric Bikes – What You Need To Know About These Spokeless Wheels Bicycles

Have you ever wondered what hubless electric bikes are and how they work? If you’re a movie geek, I’m sure the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the term “hubless bicycle” is an image of the futuristic motorcycles from Tron Legacy.

Well, while humans haven’t advanced to the point where we’re able to transform into vehicles, hubless electric motorcycles (like the Verge TS) or hubless wheels are in fact real. And recently a startup in Seattle Washington started manufacturing electric bikes with hubless wheels.

Beno Inc. (the name of the company) is set to start shipping its third batch of futuristic e-bikes to customers later this year. While a lot of bicycle enthusiasts are excited about this innovation, some bike users are not impressed by Beno’s invention and even believe what the company is promising is too good to be true.

In this article, we will answer some of the most asked questions about hubless spokeless bicycles. We will also take a deep dive into how hubless wheels work and find out if they are more efficient than regular wheels.

Is the hubless bike real

Beno’s Reevo is indeed real. The hubless electric bicycle was first teased on Indiegogo sometime around October 2020 and the company behind the product has managed to raise over 6 million in funding since the beginning of their campaign.

The bike, which is expected to ship to addresses in the US anytime soon, comes with a 750W Reevo electric-drive motor (more on this later in the article), spokeless tires, front rear lights that come with light sensors, a 48V 10.5Ah removable lithium-ion battery, etc.

Currently, there isn’t much information about the bike and it hasn’t been reviewed by independent sources yet. However, you can rest assured that the Reevo and the concept behind it are real; hubless motorcycles have existed for more than a decade now.

What is a hubless e-bike

In general, a hubless (or spokeless) e-bike is a bicycle whose wheels have no spokes. The idea of hubless wheels had existed long before Beno decided to integrate its unique engineering into their futuristic-looking electric bike (hubless wheels were first invented in 1989 by Franco Sbarro).

How do hubless wheels work

In most cases, a hubless wheel system will consist of a wheel, a center ring, an outer ring (this is the part that stays bolted to the frame of the bike), a huge sprocket, two large circular bearings (one inserted into the other), and a belt drive.

Okay, so let’s break down the function of each piece mentioned above:

  • The wheel (or rim) is the ring that supports the tire;
  • The outer ring, as mentioned earlier, stays fixed to the bike or motorcycle’s frame. This piece does not rotate;
  • The center ring attaches to the wheel to sort of create an extension that goes through the outer ring and connects to the sprocket;
  • The circular bearings fit in-between the center ring and outer ring, ensuring that the center ring is able to rotate independently;
  • The belt drive transfers motion from the motor (or engine) to the wheel (It doesn’t have to be a belt drive though. Belt drives are just used in most of the popular applications of this system. The whole idea is to transfer motion to the components in the wheel that spin);
  • The sprocket, like in regular vehicles, rotates the rest of the wheel with power from the belt (or chain).

So, basically, the operation of a hubless wheel system goes like this; the bearings ensure that while a part of the entire wheel is anchored to the frame, another part can still go on rotating in the same system.

Centerless e-bikes can also be hub-driven. In a hub-driven hubless spokeless bicycle, the electric motor spins the bearings fitted into the outer ring. These bearings then transfer the rotational force from the motor onto the center ring which goes on to spin the wheel.

The example above is just one application of a hub-driven centerless wheel system. Engineers are always trying out new ways to transfer rotational force from a motor (or engine) to a rotatable ring within a hubless wheel system.

The only components that are consistent in all hubless wheel systems are circular bearings.

You see now that hubless wheels kind of work like regular wheels. They’re just a bit more complex than regular “hub” wheels.

How much does a hubless bike cost

Hubless electric bikes haven’t gone mainstream yet. When they eventually become popular, expect hubless e-bike to range between 2500 and 3500 per unit.

Currently, the only hubless electric bicycle available on the market is the Reevo and it costs just 2698. Beno’s premium package costs about 3190. This package includes one Reevo e-bike and all the necessary accessories and utilities users will need to enjoy safe and convenient rides on their bicycles.

Potential buyers also get a discount when they purchase more than one bike.

Are hubless wheels (without Spokes) more efficient

In most cases, the efficiency of a hubless wheel will depend on the type of drive system integrated within the wheel. For example, a “hub-driven” centerless electric bike is bound to be more efficient than an e-bike with a center hub-motor because its motor is closer to the outer rim and as such retains more of its centrifugal force.

This works like a geared hub-drive system where the rotor spins a series of gears in its system which then rotate the wheel. One of the biggest advantages of this setup is that it provides an extra layer of security against bike theft (it doesn’t feature an automatic lock though)

Unlike other electric bicycles that can still be pushed along without electric power, the Reevo hubless e-bike comes with a wheel lock that once activated, locks the wheels in place. Now whoever’s trying to steal your bike can’t manually ride it or even get into its drivetrain to bypass it.

The bike is currently available in 750- and 250-Watt versions. The 750W version is designed for riders in the US and comes with both pedal and throttle-assist functionalities. This model can reportedly reach top speeds of 25 mph (40.2 kph) in its highest pedal-assist setting (PAS level 5).

The version that is designed for riders in EU nations comes with a 250-Watt motor propels the bike to a max speed of 25 kph (15.5 mph).

Reevo electric bike operation

Once turned on (after unboxing), riders can connect the Reevo hubless electric bicycle to their smartphones via an app. The app gives riders access to a lot of functions available on the bike, one of which includes setting a fingerprint lock.

The lock, once set, prevents anyone from being able to gain access into your bike’s electronic drive system. After registering your fingerprint, you can take your bike out for a spin.

The app also records riders’ speed, trip distance, battery consumption, etc. Riders can also set how much power they want the motor to deliver at any given time as well as tweak the sensitivity of the bike’s light sensor.

While the Reevo hubless e-bike doesn’t come with its own LCD device, there’s a phone mount attached to the bike’s handlebars where riders can place their phones and monitor their ride data.

Final thoughts

While the Reevo’s unique design makes it an attractive e-bike, it’s worth noting that there are risks involved with investing one’s money in a project that hasn’t gone mainstream yet.

In 2016, a revolutionary company teased the “world’s most advanced hubless Smart cycle”; The Cyclotron Bike. The company’s finished product was supposed to come with a 36V 10Ah lithium-ion battery and a 500W brushless DC motor.

However, production halted sometime around 2020 and the manufacturer has since ended their campaign on Indiegogo. They were, however, able to raise about 300,000 during the course of their campaign — money that hasn’t been returned to the people who invested in their project.

Now, I’m not saying that the same fate will befall Reevo investors, but this isn’t the first time we’re seeing an overly enthusiastic manufacturer propose an innovation that would “rock” the cycling industry. Beno claims to have started shipping Reevo e-bikes to customers, however, there are still no reviews of the bike from independent testers.

According to updates on their Indiegogo page, shipments to the United States should begin sometime in 2022. I would advise that riders who want to purchase this e-bike wait till trusted reviewers are able to get their hands on this product before investing their hard-earned money in it.

The hubless wheel configuration of the Reevo e-bike is by far its most distinct feature. The wheels of the Reevo Hubless e-bike are centerless and are built with a strong core. The hubless wheels can support weight up to 265lbs or 120kgs.

The wheels are aesthetically pleasing as they sport an elegant matte black finish. Another major feature of these wheels is that they themselves offer storage points, allowing the rider with space to mount a bag.

However, the hubless wheels are both a strong and weak point of this electric bike. The absence of the hub causes the wheel to be thicker and heavier, which in turn increases the overall weight of the electric bike.

Reevo E-Bike Safety Features:

Each year, more than 2 million bikes get stolen, and maybe somewhere, someone is losing their ride as we speak. And surprisingly, this number of stolen bikes is just in North America. than 97 percent of these stolen or lost bikes are never recovered. Losing a bike is a very unfortunate event, especially when it is your only mean of transport. Bikes generally come with a lock system that can be easily tampered with the help of tampering devices.

If it was that easy to prevent the stealing of bikes, then the number of bikes stolen each year would not have been this high. Beno Inc. knew that if they wanted to prevent the Reevo Hubless e-bike from getting stolen, they had to come up with some strong safety measures. Thus, Beno Inc. designed the Reevo Hubless e-bike with certain safety features that makes it impossible to steal.

Beno Inc. equipped the Reevo Hubless e-bike with a triple barrier anti-theft system, all while making sure that the bike meets the expectations of the riders perfectly. The triple barrier anti-theft ensures that the bike will safely stay with its owner.

The functions of the triple barrier anti-theft system in the Reevo Hubless e-bike are as follows:

One-touch fingerprint sensor:

The one-touch fingerprint sensor allows the owner to lock and unlock the bike without the use of a traditional or typical key.

The analog security system of a Bike

The Reevo Hubless e-bike comes with an advanced wheel locking feature that is incorporated within the frame of the bike. The automatic lock helps to prevent the e-bike from moving and protects it from vandalizing devices like bolt cutters.

GPS coupled with motion detection:

Reevo Hubless e-bikes have a microchip integrated within their frame. This microchip actively scans the bike for motions and sends out alerts to the owner’s phone when the bike or the position of the bike is triggered.

The next-generation e-bike also houses a GPS module that can be tracked through the Reevo smartphone app from anywhere at any time.

Due to this triple barrier anti-theft system of Reevo, you do not have to worry about your bike being stolen or lost. The biometric lock or one-touch fingerprint sensor makes sure that no one can unlock the bike without you. The motion detector and automatic locking feature of the bike save you from the trouble of purchasing a bike lock.

Simply park your electric bike at its designated parking spot and relaxingly go on with your day instead of worrying about your bike or checking on it once every few minutes. You will receive alerts on your phone through the Reevo smartphone app if anybody tries to move your bike or steal it.

Reevo App:

Beno Inc. has fully integrated the Reevo Hubless e-bike with advanced smartphone technology. You can place your phone in the smartphone carrier of the bike. The Reevo app is perfectly compatible with both iOS and Android and allows you to track your e-bike and get safety and security alerts.

A virtual geofence is deployed as soon as the bike is locked using the biometric or automatic lock. The GPS module of the electric bike will be activated as soon as it leaves the geofence and sends alerts to the phone of the owner. You can track your Reevo Hubless e-bike through the Reevo from anywhere in the world.

These Tron-like bikes are designed made by a Penang startup, but they aren’t for M’sians

When I initially came across the hubless Reevo Bikes, I was first impressed by the fact that it was made by Malaysians. My next thought was about how they looked like the bikes from the Disney movie, Tron. (Yes, I know it’s based on the 1982 film of the same name, but I’m too young for that). My managing editor, Sade, who is a fan of the Disney movie, excitedly pointed out the same.

Turns out, we were (sort of) right.

“The idea for Reevo actually came from an old movie that you’ve probably heard about—Tron,” Dr Ivan Chew, the COO of Beno Technologies, said to Vulcan Post. “The concept of hubless bicycles was something that just captivated our imagination.”

However, a hubless bike isn’t a new idea and the Beno team knew that too. There are other hubless bike prototypes out there, but none of them ever made it to mass production due to the complexity and high startup costs.

For some, that knowledge might come as a deterrence. For Beno, it only served as motivation. Ignoring past failures, the team started working on the bike using funds that came out of their own projects.

It paid off. Reevo has now raised over RM28 million via Indiegogo and is working on shipping out the bikes to its backers. Here’s how the Malaysian team did it.

Challenging the bicycle

As cool as the Reevo Bikes are, I still wondered—why reinvent something like the bike? As the saying goes, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.

“As engineers, we (sometimes foolishly) relish a good challenge, so we set out to reinvent the wheel, and we are today,” Dr Ivan explained. “It took us four years of part-time work to come out with the prototype as we still had our day jobs at that time.”

Yet, while the bike might be a breakthrough for the engineers, it still has to serve a purpose for end consumers, who could easily buy a bike for much cheaper. The one obvious thing Reevo has going for them would be the aesthetics. But is visual appeal really central for bicycles?

“Aesthetics is actually a huge reason as the emotional connection plays a huge part in the ownership of vehicles,” Dr Ivan countered.

I suppose that’s true. After all, aesthetics is a major reason why some people collect cars, despite their core function being the same.

Beyond the design, though, Reevo also comes with additional security and safety features that are not typically found on traditional bicycles or even e-bikes. These features include Reevo’s proprietary anti-theft system, GPS tracking, and fully integrated lighting on the headlamps, brake, and signal.

“We wanted to create something innovative and futuristic to challenge the concept of what a bicycle could be and look like,” Dr Ivan said.

Haters will hate

Searching Reevo on YouTube to get a better idea of how the bike performs, I was shocked to find many sceptical Комментарии и мнения владельцев.

“This bike is going to break faster than a toy from AliExpress,” one person wrote. “Can’t you see this is another scam? LOL it’s not supposed to be a real bike,” said another.

These are just two of many countless Комментарии и мнения владельцев, and it’s no surprise that the team at Beno has seen them.

“Since we started this project, we’ve received more than our fair share of scepticism,” Dr Ivan said. “A lot of it has to do with the outlandish nature of the product and the fact that we’re crowdfunding to fund the product.”

However, the team has since learnt to tune out the noise. They’ve decided to let the results do the talking.

Personally, other than the fact that they took the time to answer my questions, I also find the regular updates on the Reevo website to help a trustworthy feature too.

According to Dr Ivan, the team has learnt that transparency goes a long way towards building the confidence of Reevo’s backers and customers, so they’ve written over 60 updates since the start of the campaign.

The latest update, titled Delivery Update #4, was posted on May 13 and provides insight into how far along the team is with production and shipping.

Malaysia on the global map

Reevo has facilities in the US as well as in Malaysia, with the manufacturing arm based in Penang. According to Dr Ivan, the decision to base the factory in Malaysia is not just because of lower costs, but also to build a strong footprint in Malaysia and contribute towards building up local industries.

“We’ve also found that there is a lot of untapped talent in Malaysia, which we hope to bring on board with us,” he said.

However, audience-wise, Reevo is targeting something a bit more global. Since the bike is designed to be a commuter bike (that is, for short urban trips), it’s not exactly fitting for the local culture. In Malaysia, bicycles are often used for sports or exercise since we lack the proper infrastructure to use them as a means of transportation.

Furthermore, Dr Ivan points out that Malaysia is a more cost-sensitive market with many viable options such as motorcycles that are within the same price range.

And there’s another glaring issue. “It’s too hot to get around with bicycles!”

Being innovative

Before you start to feel left out by the Reevo Bikes, Beno Technologies actually has something else in store for us.

“At Beno, we are focused on building next-generation electric mobility solutions with a strong FOCUS on two-wheelers,” Dr Ivan began. “While I cannot dive too much into the details, we are currently in the early stages of developing a range of electric motorcycles and scooters for the Malaysian (and SEA) market.”

What could it be, I wonder? Tron-like motorcycles? Foldable Smart scooters? Hovercrafts? We’ll have to wait and see.

Besides that exciting news, Beno Technologies is also working on other innovative projects such as a battery swapping solution to complement its electric vehicles.

The end goal is to build up a strong electric vehicle ecosystem to facilitate the adoption of green mobility technologies locally and abroad. With this in mind, the company is open to partnering up with private and governmental organisations to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles.

Although Beno currently has its eyes set on other countries with Reevo Bikes, I’m definitely looking forward to its progress here in Malaysia.

“We are positioning Beno to be a global brand with a global appeal, but with a homegrown identity,” Dr Ivan said. “We definitely hope to represent and make Malaysia proud on the global stage.”
