Of course one of the main benefits of a folding ebike is that it is easier to tuck away in your apartment, house, or garage. It also makes transportation much easier (and cheaper) since you don’t necessarily need an ebike rated rack.
Even if you don’t need folding functionality on an ebike, don’t cross a folding ebike off of your list – these ebikes have other benefits which we’ll explore below. Best Folding Ebikes Video
This blue beauty is known as the Lectric XP Lite—Lectric’s cheapest and lightest foldable ebike. It is also the cheapest option that we at Ebike Escape would recommend to family and friends. At just 46 lbs, you can take this bike anywhere and reach speeds up to 20 MPH (Class 2 classifications). It has a 48V system with a 7.8 Ah battery and a 300-watt motor (720 watt peak). There are five levels of pedal assist, with the lowest level taking you on 40 miles worth of adventure!
The dimensions when folded are only 36 x 16 x 27 inches, making it one of the smallest folding ebikes on the market. It features 160 mm mechanical disc brakes and then 20 x 2.4 or 20 x 2.6 inch tires. For added safety, there are integrated front and rear lights, something we don’t often see on ebikes at this price range. There is an LCD display showing your trip statistics and the electrical components are rated IP-65 for water and dust resistance. The Lectric XP Lite is a single-speed for simplicity, but don’t let that dissuade you – this ebike still has plenty of power!

Lectric XP 2.0 (999)
Ah yes, the Lectric XP—no list would be complete without it. The Lectric XP 2.0 is a step up from the XP Lite, granting you with high-quality transportation. It has been the ebike of choice for hundreds of thousands of riders in the United States. The step-through version (image above) is our pick due to its increased accessibility, but it is also offered in a high step.
So what makes the Lectric XP special besides its price? The 500-watt motor peaks at over 800 watts and can be overridden to reach speeds over 20 MPH. Powering the motor is a 48V, 9.6 Ah battery which should be sufficient for most, but you can certainly find folding ebikes with larger batteries. The battery located inside the frame lends itself to the clean design of the Lectric XP 2.0. It also comes fully assembled (and folded), making the setup a cinch. Although, you may still want to have a bike shop go over the bike before riding.
You’ll also find 3-inch tires, a 1×7 Shimano drivetrain, front suspension, paint-matched fenders, rear rack, and integrated front and rear lights. Lectric XPremium (1,799)
We promise this is the last Lectric ebike on this list—we couldn’t help but include all three of their amazing foldable models! Featured here is the Lectric XPremium. This is the most expensive model from Lectric, but for good reason. It boasts 160mm hydraulic disc brakes, dual batteries with nearly 21 Ah of total capacity, fat tires at 4-inches wide, and most importantly, the mid-drive motor.
This bike allows you to conquer hills and tough terrain. Pack it in with your camping gear—it weighs 75 lbs with both batteries (7 lbs each) and folds into a small 40 x 22 x 32 inches. If you’re planning on a larger trip, this rig can hold a total payload of 330 lbs. The 25′-inch wide handlebars offer comfort and room for accessories, alongside the backlit LCD display.

Espin Nesta (2,199)
The Espin Nesta is the flagship offering in Espin’s lineup. While not as well known as some brands, Espin is known for its value-priced ebikes. The Nesta is offered in a step-through frame for increased accessibility.
It boasts a powerful 750-watt motor with a 10.5 Ah externally mounted battery. Because of its location, the battery is easy to remove. The frame holds 275 lbs and comes with both a front and a rear rack. The Nesta also features hydraulic disc brakes. We’ve also been happy with the S-Ride trigger shifter and derailleur. The Espin Nesta comes with true fat tires that are 4 inches wide.

Aventon Sinch (1,799)
The stylish and slick Aventon Sinch has 4-inch fat bike tires, a 20 MPH top speed, and up to 40 miles of range with its 14 Ah battery. Those are decent specs for a bike of its price. And Aventon ebikes are easy to recommend. Not only do they have a network of dealers across the U.S., but their frame quality blows away any budget-priced ebike brand. Speaking of frames, the Sinch is also offered in a high-step if you prefer.
A 45mm suspension fork will smooth out the ride and you’ll be cruising with its 750-watt peak motor (500-watt nominal). With a 7-speed rear derailleur and a 5-speed pedal assist, the Aventon Sinch is a great option for those looking for a slightly upgraded folding ebike. Rad Power Bikes RadExpand 5 (1,599)
If you have followed Ebike Escape for a while now, you know how much we love Rad Power Bikes. We’re ecstatic to share that they’ve once again revamped their previous foldable electric bike into what is now known as the RadExpand 5. It features a step-through frame, adjustable BMX-style handlebars, seven speeds, and four levels of pedal assist. The 750-watt hub motor and 14 Ah battery can get you 25-45 miles worth of exploration.
This fifth-generation foldable bike weighs 62.5 lbs and has a rear rack and fenders included in the package. The rear rack is equipped to withstand 55 lbs of weight, with a total payload of 275 lbs. The tires are 20″ x 4″ for ease and comfort when riding and this ebike features an LED display though it can be upgraded to the Rad LCD display.

Fiido D11 Folding Electric Bike for Commuter (1,099)
Where to start on Fiido: This isn’t an ebike company that has a folding ebike model—it’s an ebike company that focuses on the folding variety! start at just 659 for their Fiido D2S and go up to 1,599 for the Fiido X. Fiido folding ebikes are meant to cater to someone looking for a lightweight folding ebike that can be tucked away out of the way or easily transported in a vehicle. Sure, the motors and batteries are smaller than some of the ebikes above, but this isn’t the selling point of a Fiido ebike. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better value than a Fiido when you look at other ebikes in its class.
The D11 has a 36V, 11.6Ah battery that can reach up to 62 miles! It features a 250-watt motor and can reach speeds of 15 MPH. We at Ebike Escape haven’t gotten out hands on one of these yet, but can’t wait until the day we do!
Brompton (3,800)
British bike company Brompton is the original in the realm of folding bikes, so it’s only natural they’d delve into folding ebikes as well. They’re not cheap—a Brompton ebike will set you back around 3,800—but people seek out Brompton for a reason. They’re a solid bike company that has been doing folding bikes forever. We’ve witnessed people become converts watching the folding process. Plus, the Brompton electric is lightweight at just 32 lbs.
There’s something of a classic British bicycle look to the ebike line. Its lowest-priced model reaches speeds of 15 MPH with its 250-watt front hub motor. With six gears and a range of 25-40 miles (300Wh 36V battery), it might not quite stack up to the others in terms of features. But those who want a Brompton know they want a Brompton.
SnapCycle S1 (1,499)
The SnapCycle S1 features a 750 watt (1,200 peak) hub motor and a 48V, 14Ah Samsung Lithium-Ion Battery. It can toggle between Class 2 and Class 3 depending on your use and estimates a range of 30-45 miles. The total payload capacity is 300 lbs and the bike itself weighs 66 lbs. The display is a backlit LCD to show you the five levels of pedal assist available. It also grants fenders and 4-inch tires with the purchase.

The Electric Bike Company’s Model F is currently available for pre-order! While we at Ebike Escape haven’t tried this one out yet, we are excited to see this product launch considering the great quality of their other models. The Model F will be a foldable cruiser that is fully customizable and arrives at your door fully built. You can expect a 750-watt motor and an approximate 50-mile range on the battery. It will also feature an LCD display and a payload of 300 lbs.
The Best Folding Ebike
Simply saying one folding ebike is the best in the category would be tough. There are a number of options. Choosing the best one for you depends on your budget, and what kind of riding you’ll be doing. Some are clearly for those who don’t worry about budgets, such as the Brompton brand. How far can Qualisports bikes go on a single charge?
Distance differs on the terrain, weight of the cyclist, and the power mode you are using (pedal only, full Throttle, or pedal assist).
The typical range on Volador is 20 to 30 miles on a single charge using primarily electric power. If you use the PAS, mileage can increase. Some riders can achieve over 30 miles when cycling in pedal-assist mode.
How to turn on/off the front headlight?Turn on the LCD display, hold the display’s UP button for 2-3 seconds, the headlight/LCD display background light will both be turned on. Hold the power button the same way to turn it off.
Is the bike pre-assembled?95% of the bikes are pre-assembled, with detailed installation videos for the front and rear fenders.

With a unique single-sided frame and carbon fork, the GoCycle G4 delivers a Smart design and smooth ride.
The relatively long wheelbase and relaxed head tube angle mean the G4 is far removed from the twitchiness often associated with small-wheeled folding bikes. Despite the long wheelbase, the bike still folds up small and can fit in the boot of a small car.
GoCycle has its own motor system that monitors speed and cadence to determine how much power assistance you need. However, there’s also a button on the handlebar to override this.
We found the motor and bike to be nippier than some of the best electric bikes and well suited to city rides. But, due to the chunky tyres, suspension and traction control, it can also tackle rougher terrain.
The only thing holding the G4 back is its high price.

With a quick fold via a central hinge, the MiRider One pairs funky looks with a fun, practical ride. Handy features such as a skate wheel to help you push its 18.7kg weight around when folded also help make this a winner.
You only get a singlespeed gear on the MiRider One, but with the added electric assistance, that’s enough to tackle most hills around town.
Hit the ‘boost’ button and you’ll get a turbo charge to help you get away from the lights and up steeper gradients. Cable disc brakes help you stop safely and the keen price is appealing, too.

While the previous MiRider One is still available, MiRider has refined the design and improved the specification to create the One GB3.
The magnesium alloy frame has an air-filled shock absorber for comfort and enough adjustability to fit tall and short riders.
The folding ebike has a rear-hub motor powered by a 7Ah/252Wh battery with a claimed range of 45 miles, which is more than ample for the short distances you’ll likely ride on this bike.
The bike has a maintenance-free belt drive and three gears that, along with the motor, helped our tester get over a 14 per cent climb.
It’s fun to ride and feels stable at speed. The short wheelbase and small wheels make weaving through traffic a breeze.
With an easy-to-fold design, hydraulic disc brakes, comfortable saddle and a kickstand, the bike is well-considered and, ultimately, better value than some of its better-known rivals.

Best ebike conversion kit for Bromptons

This one’s an outlier because it’s an electric folding bike comprised of a standard Brompton and an ebike conversion kit from British company Cytronex.
However, if you’re already a Brompton owner, or want to choose a different model than the foldable ebikes on offer as standard, then this is a Smart choice. It’s worth noting that fitting the kit will invalidate your Brompton’s warranty though.
The kit contains a new front wheel with e-motor hub, battery pack, charger, wiring loom and bottle-cage style mount. The price also covers fitting and, rather than using the strap-on battery mount, Cytronex will add bottle bosses to the frame for a neat and secure fit.
The battery can remain in place when folding and adds only a couple of kilograms to the overall weight.
The result is an efficient system that retains the lightweight handling of a standard Brompton, though you need to take care not to unweight the front wheel on steeper roads.

Brompton Electric H2L 2-Speed

Brompton partnered with Williams Advanced Engineering (of Formula 1 and Formula E fame) to develop a bespoke system for its electric folding bike. It’s made up of a front-hub motor and a Smart-looking battery, housed in a Cordura bag. The total bike weight is 17.43kg, compared to a claimed 11.35kg for a standard Brompton.
The system is operated by two buttons on the battery, but we’d prefer a bar-mounted control, or the ability to use Brompton’s app (and a phone mount) to cycle between settings.
Brompton’s motor provides a punchy ride, but it does feel like overkill in some situations, even if it’s fun to get a head start on other riders at traffic lights. The middle of the three settings provides the best balance of power and range.
You need to remove the battery before folding, but that’s simple enough, and the charger is nice and compact.

The Eelo 1885 Explorer Disc Pro is a decent electric folding bike now with mechanical disc brakes in place of V-brakes.
For nipping on and off a train, the 1885 is ideal because it’s easy to carry in folded form. There’s a rear rack but the wheels are too small to attach panniers.
The Eelo 1885 Explorer Disc Pro falls short of its claimed range and you can’t remove the battery to recharge.
The 1885’s short wheelbase will probably make taller riders will unstable.

For £1,000, the Emu Mini packs a punch above its diminutive size.
It’s light for an ebike at 17.7kg, and its 16in wheels come with chunky tyres, so it can handle more than just city streets. The 3-speed gearing helps you get around fast, and you get disc brakes for reliable stopping.
The range is a bit limited: we got just 13 miles, although there’s a £100 battery upgrade that will improve on that. Otherwise, this is a bike for short commutes.
Still, with the battery located in the seatpost, it’s easy to take away for recharging, and the charger is compact enough to carry with you if you need a top-up at work before turning for home.

Engwe Engine Pro 750W
The Engwe Engine Pro 750W bucks the trend for electric folding bikes, packing a lot of power and weighing 35kg.
In addition to the punchy motor and fairly good range, the Engwe Engine’s brakes, display and control function well.
Although the Engwe Engine Pro 750W is fun to ride, our reviewer thought the front and rear suspension are unnecessary and only add to the bike’s excessive weight.

Tern Vektron

Powered by a mid-mounted Bosch motor, the Tern Vektron has the same three-step fold as Tern’s pedal-powered bikes. Its wheels are a tad larger than a Brompton’s at 20 inches, rather than 16 inches.
The Vektron includes hydraulic disc brakes, providing a step up in power from mechanical disc brakes. Three build options are available in all.

Buyer’s guide: what to look for in a folding electric bike
Folding electric bike motor systems

The most common electric bike motor for powering folding ebikes is a hub motor either in the front or the rear wheel, powered by a battery that’s often built into the frame. That has the advantage of a tidy, weatherproof package, but may limit the battery size and hence range, and add weight.
Another option for the battery is to make it removable. That’s the way Brompton has gone, with a pack that clips to the front of the bike so it can be carried separately. It also means you can take your battery somewhere convenient to charge it, while leaving your bike locked up or in the garage/bike shed.
Some internal batteries are removable too; that’s how the battery works in the GoCycle GX and GXi.
Electric bike laws in the UK and EU stipulate that the motor in a standard electric bike has to provide no more than 250 watts of power output, and most ebike motors, including those in folders, will provide up to this level of assistance.
Folding electric bike gearing
Some folding ebikes will only have a single-gear ratio. With the assistance from the motor to start you off, that may well be enough if you have a shortish, flat commute.
For longer, hillier rides, or for leisure use, you may want some extra gears. Hub gears are popular because they’re out of the way and less likely to get damaged than a derailleur system when carrying or moving the folder.
Our guide to electric bike maintenance has more tips on how to look after electric bikes. You’re unlikely to leave an electric folding bike unattended, but electric bike insurance is still advisable.
Hub gears may range from a simple 2- or 3-speed system, up to eight or more gears. Adding gearing also adds weight, and the cabling for the shifters adds complexity to the design.
Wheel size
A folding ebike will have small wheels, to make for a compact bundle once it’s folded. The classic Brompton has 16in wheels, a size used by many other folders.
Other brands, such as Tern and GoCycle, use 20in wheels. Their larger size helps a bit with rolling resistance and they’ll ride more smoothly over road imperfections, in compensation for increased weight and a larger folded size.
Folded size
Folded size and ease of folding are other things to think about. If you’re planning a commute that also includes public transport, you’ll want a folding ebike that packs up as small as possible, so you can get it onto busy trains or up awkward steps on buses.
That’s where a design with an integrated battery comes in handy because it won’t get in the way of the fold. Brompton’s solution of a separate battery pack also works here. Although there’s a second piece of kit to carry around, the folding mechanism and compact folded size aren’t compromised.
Another option, used by GoCycle and others, is to enable you to part-fold the bike, so you get a package that you can push or pull around using the seat as a handle. It’ll take up more space than a fully folded machine, but has the advantage that you don’t need to fully lug around the bike’s often substantial weight.
MiRider’s clever design, meanwhile, has a skate wheel on the bottom of the bike, to make manoeuvring the folded package much easier.

Internal gearing vs derailleur
Internal hub gearing is common on e-bikes because it requires very little maintenance compared to a derailleur. It has less exposed parts which reduces wear and tear.
These types of hubs usually can’t get as wide a gear range as a derailleur, but this is pretty much irrelevant as you are powered mostly by the motor on an e-bike.

What to think of full suspension folding electric bikes?
Full suspension on a folding e-bike is a little excessive. In general, this type of bike is uses for urban riding, commuting, or light trail rides. To do this well, all you need is fat tires and/or front fork suspension to absorb the bumps you encounter.
Additionally, a folding e-bike usually won’t have the correct geometry to tackle tough mountain descents and singletrack.
What to think of cheap folding electric bikes?
For cyclists who need a bike for light usage and short trips, without the need to go off-road or carry heavy cargo, a cheap folding e-bike should be able to meet those needs.
For heavier usage or more difficult riding conditions like off-roading or tough gradients, a cheap e-bike might not work effectively or be durable enough.
Electric Bike Classifications
Most folding fat tire electric bikes are Class 1, which means the pedal assistance works up to 20mph. However, there are also Class 2 and 3. They are categorized as follows:
- Class 1: Top speed 20mph

- Class 3: Top speed 28mph Throttle 20mph
Hub drive vs mid-drive
Hub drive motors are the cheapest type. They are heavier and are generally found in the rear wheel axle. They power the rear wheel independently of the drivetrain and thus are not as efficient, especially in their power delivery or smoothness.
Mid-drive motors are the premium choice. They are more expensive, lighter, and are found in between the pedals. This location improves the center of gravity. These motors work by powering the drivetrain, delivering a smooth and efficient power output.

Spoke wheels are the premium option. They are more durable and perform better than cast wheels. Cast wheels are found on cheaper models. They require less maintenance and are lightweight, but also less durable.

They are designed to fold and unfold easily without interfering with the ebike cables or components. These small ebikes can even be folded with a rear rack and front basket attached! (Note: Your folded dimensions in this scenario are slightly wider, but still more compact for storage)
Folding Ebike Safety
All of our frames provide a solid, sturdy ride feel, and our folding ebikes are no exception. With multiple safety redundancies, the primary folding hinge prevents accidental unlatching when locked properly. When unfolded and securely latched, these ebikes are designed to be safely ridden across a variety of terrains.
Tires Terrain
All of our folding ebike models feature 20” diameter fat tires capable of handling hills, multiple terrains, and longer rides. Models come with either a 3” wide smoother tire or 4” wide tire with a more rugged tread.
The three-inch wide fat tire provides an efficient and slightly zippier ride. The smaller diameter helps the bike get up to top speed a bit quicker than larger tires. The slightly thinner tire has less rolling resistance and is quieter than a wider tire, while still offering great stability.
The four-inch wide, more rugged tread provides additional stability for off-road riding while offering more of a fat bike-style ride feel. The 4″ width allows for customers to adjust tire pressure to ride different terrain and provides more cushion to a rigid fork ebike setup. Overall, these tires provide a stable and safe ride for first-time riders even when rolling over smaller obstacles.
For heavier off-road and outdoor use, we sometimes see our folding ebike customers with 3″ tires opt to purchase the Kenda Krusade tires as an upgrade with a 4-inch tire width and heavier tread. (bonus: You’ll have the original tires as backups!)
Transporting Storing
Our folding ebikes are designed to be smaller and easily collapsible for transporting in a vehicle or storing in smaller spaces. These ebikes are designed to fold up and fit conveniently in the back of a car, SUV, camper van or an RV without the need for special racks.
They can also transport like a regular ebike on a vehicle with our Hollywood Racks Sport Rider Ebike Hitch Rack and Ebike Adapter Bar add-ons. The Sport Rider Ebike Hitch Rack is not currently available for use with RVs.
