What is the difference in speed?

The classification into 50cc or 125cc depends on the power of the motor and the maximum speed. If the power is between 1000 (1 kW) and 4000 (4 kW) Watts, and the speed does not exceed 45km/h, the electric scooter is a 50 cc equivalent.

What about the driving license?

In most cases, a motorbike license is not required if you drive a 50cc equivalent electric scooter. In France for example, these scooters can be driven by people starting from 14-year-old with only the AM license. A license is not necessarily required for adults.

However, the electric scooters 125cc are faster and a license is usually needed to drive them. In certain cases, you just need a car license and some years of experience.

The following vehicles ARE required to be titled and registered to be operated on roads of this state.

“Motorcycle” per section 320.01(26), Florida Statutes means: Any motor vehicle having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider and designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground. This term includes autocycle, but excludes a tractor or a moped. Per section 322.03(4), Florida Statutes: (4) A person may not operate a motorcycle unless he or she holds a driver license that authorizes such operation, subject to the appropriate restrictions and endorsements.

Autocycle

“Autocycle” per section per section 316.003(2), Florida Statutes means: A three-wheeled motorcycle that has two wheels in the front and one wheel in the back; is equipped with a roll cage or roll hoops, a seat belt for each occupant, antilock brakes, a steering wheel, and seating that does not require the operator to straddle or sit astride it. Per section 322.03(4), Florida Statutes: A person may operate an autocycle, as defined in section 316.003(2), Florida Statutes without a motorcycle endorsement.

Since Chapter 322, Florida Statutes, has no definition for motor scooters, they fall under the definition of a motorcycle. Therefore, the operator must have a valid driver license to operate a motor scooter, or motorcycle. However, if the vehicle is powered by a motor with a displacement of more than 50 cubic centimeters, the operator must have a motorcycle endorsement.

The following vehicles ARE NOT required to be titled nor registered to be operated on roads of this state.

Motorized Scooter

“Motorized Scooter” per section 316.003(48), Florida Statutes means: Any vehicle not having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider, designed to travel on not more that three wheels, and not capable of propelling the vehicle at a speed greater than 30 miles per hour on level ground. Please note: NO seat or saddle. This type of scooter cannot be titled or registered in this state. NOTE: Per section 316.2128 Micromobility devices, motorized scooters, and miniature motorcycles; requirements.— (1) The operator of a motorized scooter or micromobility device has all of the rights and duties applicable to the rider of a bicycle under s. 316.2065, except the duties imposed by s. 316.2065(2), (3)(b), and (3)(c), which by their nature do not apply. However, this section may not be construed to prevent a local government, through the exercise of its powers under s. 316.008, from adopting an ordinance governing the operation of micromobility devices and motorized scooters on streets, highways, sidewalks, and sidewalk areas under the local government’s jurisdiction. (2) A motorized scooter or micromobility device is not required to satisfy the registration and insurance requirements of s. 320.02 or the licensing requirements of s. 316.605. (3) A person is not required to have a driver license to operate a motorized scooter or micromobility device.

“Electric Bicycle” per section 316.003(23), Florida Statutes means: A bicycle or tricycle equipped with fully operable pedals, a seat or saddle for the use of the rider, and an electric motor of less than 750 watts which meets the requirements of one of the following three classifications: (a) “Class 1 electric bicycle” means an electric bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling and that ceases to provide assistance when the electric bicycle reaches the speed of 20 miles per hour. (b) “Class 2 electric bicycle” means an electric bicycle equipped with a motor that may be used exclusively to propel the electric bicycle and that ceases to provide assistance when the electric bicycle reaches the speed of 20 miles per hour. (c) “Class 3 electric bicycle” means an electric bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling and that ceases to provide assistance when the electric bicycle reaches the speed of 28 miles per hour. Persons riding an electric bicycle have all the rights and privileges of a bicyclist. Riders are not required to be licensed to operate one, nor are they subject to title and registration. Note: Per section 316.20655, Florida Statute: The operation of electric bicycles on roads must comply with any more restrictive ordinances enacted by local government and should be verified prior to operating one.

The following vehicles ARE required to be registered but ARE NOT required to be titled to be operated on roads of this state.

Moped

“Moped” per section 320.01(27). Florida Statutes means: Any vehicle with pedals to permit propulsion by human power, having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider and designed to travel on not more than three wheels, with a motor rated not in excess of 2 brake horsepower and not capable of propelling the vehicle at a speed greater than 30 miles per hour on level ground, and with a power-drive system that functions directly or automatically without clutching or shifting gears by the operator after the drive system is engaged. If an internal combustion engine is used, the displacement may not exceed 50 cubic centimeters. Registration is REQUIRED, NO Title is required. This vehicle can be operated on the roadways of this state. Please note: Pedals Section 320.02(1), Florida Statutes Registration Required: Except as otherwise provided in this chapter, every owner or person in charge of a motor vehicle that is operated or driven on the roads of this state shall register the vehicle in this state. The owner or person in charge shall apply to the department or to its authorized agent for registration of each such vehicle on a form prescribed by the department. A registration is not required for any motor vehicle that is not operated on the roads of this state during the registration period.

What size of Scooter should I buy?

S o you’re thinking about getting a scooter bu are not sure which one or what size? One question you need to be able to answer is why do I need a scooter? Once you answer that then the rest will fall into place.

While a scooter is often an economical choice, the more you are aware what you use the scooter for the clearer your choice of vehicles will be. Our stable of reliable quality scooters range from 50cc up to an impressive 550cc, and each size is most suitable to particular ride requirements.

50cc Scooters/Mopeds

50cc Scooters are speed limited (by law). They are best suited for local suburban travel and busy inner city rides on low speed zones. But mind you, this is a crowded market where a lot of cheap imports are on offer where most are designed for speeds up to just 35km/h only. This while some of the 50cc scooters like the Kymco Super 8 also come in a 125ccm version exceeding top speeds of 100km/h. It means those 50cc scooters are equipped with a frame, wheels, braking system etc for higher speeds and they are logically much more sturdy, stable and much safer to ride.

200cc Scooters

125 – 200cc scooters are best suited for more local travel, continuous travel on 80km/h roads and brief commutes on 100km/h speed limited roads and freeways. They are the most popular in crowded centres with high traffic as they provide enough power to keep up with traffic normally but usually are still lightly built and nimble in handling so you can get through traffic easily.

Some 150cc scooters, for example the new Kymco Like 150 R or the People 150 S with its larger wheels deliver power that lets you travel well above metropolitan freeway speeds of 100km/h. However, this class of vehicle is lighter and if you travel on higher speeds more often or ride two up regularly, we definitely recommend looking into the next class up.

Maxi Scooters above 200cc

Maxi Scooters are usually larger framed scooters with engine sizes of 2500cc and larger. Their frame is wider and provides better protection for the rider, larger wheels smoothen out the ride and provide more stability, while generally heavier kerb weight increases comfort and convenience for the rider and a passenger – even in high winds. The extra power of a larger engine provides more relaxed highway riding and overtaking abilities.

The bigger scooters are considered ideal for touring style long trips or longer commuting distances. While they might not be the preferred choice to weave through traffic, they can be luxurious and emit an impressive road presence like for example the new Kymco Xciting S400i.
