Since there are so many models to sift through, we spoke with Ben Foster an e-bike expert at the family owned and operated electric bike store Strictly Ebikes. He gave us the low-down on the different options out there and how to choose the right one for you.

Scoot into summer, and with savings no less.

Best electric scooter design: Segway Ninebot KickScooter Air T15, 800
If you thought Segway was only for tours and mall cops, think again.
This Segway brand electric scooter is a game-changer, winning multiple awards for innovation. The Ninebot KickScooter Air can go as fast at 12.4 mph and about nine miles on a single charge. The whole scooter weighs only 23 pounds and folds up to be 8.7 inches, making it a portable and easy option for both riding and storing when done for the day.

FAQ with the e-bike expert
The different types of electric bike models
Among electronic bikes, Foster says there are two main types you can choose from: step-over and step-through.
“Step-over is the diamond-shaped frame you probably remember from childhood,” he told The Post. “Step-through is missing that top bar, making it a more relaxed style — one that’s also better for shorter people.”
You’ll also want to consider what you plan on mainly using it for as Foster explained models with “fat or knobby tires are better for riding on trails or gravel” whereas “smoother and narrower tires provide a better ride on the street and give you more battery range.”
There’s also the power output to consider, which, according to Foster, will tell you how quick “but not necessarily faster” the bike is. These power levels can range anywhere from 350W to 750W, but it’s also important to remember “a higher power draw means you run down the battery more quickly.”
You’ll also want to determine the speed and whether you’d like a pedal-assist or throttle-assist. This is categorized by “class” as Foster describes with class one e-bikes being “pedal-assist only” with no throttle and “a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph,” a class two e-bike is throttle-assisted with a max assisted speed of 20 mph and a class three e-bike comes with pedal-assist only, no throttle and a max assisted speed of 28 mph.
Other characteristics to consider
For adventure seekers, Foster usually points people to a knobby-tire model with more power to handle both hills and off-road environments. Commuters should lean more towards “an easy-to-live-with model with a solid range,” while “if they’re an urban dweller, they may want a foldable model that can fit into an apartment,” he said.
What he thinks is the most important characteristic though, is “buying from a reputable brand or shop that will support you after the sale.” Make sure you look into the warranty policies of the electric bike you’re looking as as a new e-bike should have one for at least one year.
After narrowing down your selection, Foster suggests reading professional reviews and opinions from real people using sources like eBikes Forum or Electric Bike Review to “get an authentic sense of how different models perform.”
If you still find yourself with unanswered questions, he encourages visiting a shop to ask them.
“Ebikes are new to most people, so it’s totally okay to have questions!” he said.
Beginner e-bikes v. models for more experienced riders
For beginners, Foster says to look for “an e-bike with a lighter chassis, which means a smaller battery, and a less powerful motor.” Step-through frames are usually more popular among new riders, he points out the frame “really comes down to personal preference.”
Cost is also a consideration to take into account as newer riders may prefer to “get their feet wet with a lower-cost model that has fewer bells and whistles.”
Most experienced e-bike users Foster has assisted tend to have a “need for speed” so they are typically interested in models with a higher output level. These are also “often people who are avid bikers and like traveling long distances” that means a bigger battery may be a priority, which will also increase the weight of the bike.
What to avoid in an electronic bike or scooter
Custom or home-built e-bikes and e-scooters should be avoided as some repair shops won’t even service them. Foster says this is due to the fact that “they tend to be jerry-rigged together, and can even be unsafe.”
The emphasis should be on comfort over needs, too. Make sure your try out different models to find the most comfortable design to ensure you’ll ride it.

Schwinn is one of the oldest, most trusted, and best recognized names in biking. It should come as no surprise, then, that they also make some solid electric bikes. For Prime Day 2022, the company has put a few of its e-bikes on sale, making it a little easier to pick up one and start taking some easy, pedal-assisted rides. Make no mistake, even with the deals, these bikes are still a serious investment. That said, if you look at the options on our best electric bikes list, you’ll see that these cost more than a great e-bike normally would.
Schwinn Amalgam hybrid electric bike – 1,120.57 (34 percent off)
Unsurprisingly, the older Amalgam hybrid offers the deepest discount among Schwinn’s electric bikes. With a 250W hub drive motor, the 7-speed Amalgam offers pedal assistance to get you moving at up to 20 miles per hour. Its 375W battery should last up to 45 miles, depending on conditions. Ironically, it looks more like a modern bike than Schwinn’s newer models, which are designed to evoke the brand’s classic style. That may be a good thing or a bad thing: Either way, this bike saves you more money than other Schwinn ebike on Prime Day 2022.
Schwinn Mendocino hybrid electric beach cruiser (no throttle) – 1,119.99 (34 percent off)
Another last-gen model, the Schwinn Mendocino is a long commuter bike for easy trips across town or long leisure rides. This 6-speed step-through model comes with a 250W hub-drive motor and a 313Wh battery that allows up to 45 miles of pedal assistance, topping out at 20 miles per hour.
If you want more than pedal assistance, there’s a second version of the Mendocino with a throttle on sale, as well. At 1,359.99, it’s only 15 percent off, though.
Schwinn Marshall hybrid electric bike – 1,359.99 (15 percent off)
With a modern look not unlike the Amalgam, the Schwinn Marshall is a throttle-equipped 7-speed ebike made for quick commutes. It features a 250W hub drive motor and 288Wh battery, which allows for up to 35 miles of pedal assisted riding. As with the other models, the motor can boost you up to 20 miles per hour. It also comes with an LED headlight, which is to have for both trips home from the office and evening pleasure rides.
Schwinn Kettle Valley hybrid electric bike – 1,189.99 (30 percent off)
Another discontinued model, the Schwinn Kettle Valley is a 7-speed cruiser with a modern look. Schwinn Electric Bikes Review — Surprisingly Good
Schwinn electric bikes are some of the best value and most reliable models available. They come in three types, Mendocino, Marshall, and Coston, with step-through and step-over models available.
range from 1,499 to 1,999 and while the individual models are quite different, the level of components is similar across the range, with the major difference coming in the size of the battery and a few extras like rear racks, lights, and fenders.
The Marshall and Coston models are considered hybrids, while Mendocino is a cruiser-style e-bike.
However, each Schwinn eBike is built with comfort as one of the main characteristics.
About Schwinn bikes
Schwinn is the longest operating and one of the oldest bike manufacturers in North America, established in 1895. For more than a century company has been at the forefront of bicycle engineering helping athletes set records and regular cyclists get around in style.
The company’s most renowned for its Stingray model in the 1950s and for being one of the first to design a BMX style bike and build a team around those bikes.

Schwinn Marshall Electric Bike
Of the Schwinn electric bicycles, the Marshall is the cheapest model they sell. However, the bike doesn’t sacrifice much compared to the other models, it just has a slightly smaller battery and overall range.
For a 1500 hybrid, this bike still has a respectable max range of around 35 miles thanks to the 288W integrated battery. Additionally, this battery charges in just four hours. The motor used is the same one you will see across this Schwinn electric bike review, a 250W rear-hub drive.
Other notable features of this bike include integrated “be seen” LED lights, powerful mechanical disc brakes, a 7-speed Shimano drivetrain, as well as grippy, 650b urban tires.

By using the 7-speed drivetrain you will be able to get the most out of your motor and battery.
A notable feature of this bike is its large storage and carrying capacity. It comes with a rear pannier rack and a stealthy under-seat storage compartment which allows you to store small items that you want to keep close.

I didn’t find assembly as hard as some but it did arrive with the front fork attached in the wrong direction to the handlebar stem, which left me reassembling things more than I expected. Overall the ride is nice, very comfortable bike that is easy to just hop on and go. I bought this bike with the i ntention of using it for commuting to work in an urban setting with a round trip of about 13 miles and 500 ft elevation change. Based on the description, I 100% expected the battery to be more than enough for what I needed in a day, riding ~13 miles/60 minutes. I’m barely making it home with the battery flashing at me on empty. And this is within the first week of riding it. I never use the throttle and keep the assist on the lower end the majority of the ride. Speaking of the throttle, it’s not powerful. It also cannot be used on an incline. If you are going faster than some arbitrary speed and press the throttle, it’ll actually slow you down. I made the mistake of trying to use it on a hill and ended up walking because it kicked my speed down so slow I couldn’t get going again. This is my first e-bike as an experienced road and mountain biker. From that perspective, I am impressed with the level of comfort and the ease of shifting gears. It’s an attractive bike that doesn’t scream electric. I’m disappointed in the battery life and overall power. I hate to spend more money on a longer-life battery but it may just be necessary show more
The welded frame looks solid. All the electric wires and cables are neatly wrapped. I received the bike with the front brake cable routed behind the fork. It took two phone calls before I convinced the Rep that this was abnormal. The rep. sent me a check so the local shop could reroute the cable prop erly. I also received a spare part Incase we damaged anything during the repair. I was anxious about the bicycle fit to my frame but I used the recommended height for the bike : L/X. The bike, which is a step thru, feels comfortable. I recently tore my left meniscus and worried about falling. I can stand while strattling the cross tube. The step thru feels a little high but when I tilt the bike, the top tube is low enough for me to step- thru. I am slightly mechanically minded so I was looking forward to the assembly. The only tools required, an Allen wrench and open ended wrench, are included. The assembly only requires installing and aligning the front wheel, seat, pedals and handle bar with stem. Everything went smoothly. However, I was surprised to see the front brake cable running from left to right behind the fork, over the tire, then up around the head from right to left then connect to the left brake hand lever. The bike still worked, but turning the handle bar over 45° to the left began a strain on the cable. This was easily fixed. Schwinn strongly suggests we take the bike to a local shop and have the brakes and derailer adjusted I decided to watch videos and do the alignments myself. I also adjusted the seat height and level of the handlebar myself. Overall, I am happy with the quality of the bike. The customer service is a phone call away and ready to help. I wish that I had called Schwinn ahead of my purchase to discuss the bike and the fit. But the fit feels right: since an upright hybrid bike is more comfortabe. The ride feels amazing. The power assist feels natural and I love the 5 assist levels. The twist gear selector works great. the lowest gear. is significantly larger than the other gears in the cassette. This is intended to help ease the pedaling up hill. However, after I realized that I can take the hill using assist 5, I didn’t need to use gear 1 anymore to climb hills easily.
